Review Roundup: ‘Colombiana’ Starring Zoe Saldana

Well, it’s Friday in August, which means it’s time for all the movies that the studios were afraid to release during the high days of summer are now getting dumped into the cinematic elephant’s graveyard that is the eighth month of our calendar year. One such film is Colombiana starring Zoe Saldana, which is the kind of movie Angelina Jolie would have made about two years ago, when she was heavy into the woman-who-weighs-72-pounds-is-still-somehow-a-kill-machine-badass genre.

So, is it worth your time? We’ve gathered up an array of critical reviews to help you decide whether or not to plunk down $20 to see a film about a lady assassin who launches a rampage of revenge against those who have wronged her (let’s just pretend like you haven’t already seen Kill Bill Vols. 1-2, ok?).

The Good:

L.A. Times: “…the filmmakers never forget their main agenda is action and elimination, piling up the bodies in increasingly exotic and unbelievably complex ways, all very cleverly and cleanly shot by director of photography Romain Lacourbas, who worked with Megaton on “Transporter 3.” Keeping the style at Maxim levels is production designer Patrick Durand with costume designer Olivier Bériot making the most of the sartorial possibilities afforded by Saldana’s lean, leggy frame.”

Variety: “…Saldana’s contribution is key. Despite being a ruthless killer with a killer bod and a predilection for skimpy, tight-fitting apparel (costume designer Olivier Beriot seems to have taken a cue from the “Avatar” thesp’s motion-capture body suit), she not only exudes sexiness but also generates a certain amount of sympathy.”

The Meh:

MSNBC: “Lt. Uhura wants to kill Bill — or something like that. Zoe Saldana (“Star Trek,” “Avatar”) plays a sexy contract killer who puts her parents’ murderers in her vengeful crosshairs. A slick actioner from assassin-genre godfather Luc Besson, “Colombiana” is often preposterous but never boring.”

Box Office Magazine: “While most action films fall apart because they succumb to stupidity, Colombiana suffers most because it tries to be too smart.”

The Ugly:

New York Times: “The overall effect is distancing; there are some early comic moments that have you laughing along with the movie, but eventually the clashing tones and preposterousness just have you laughing.”

New York Post: “The action scenes, though ridiculous and building up to a grand finale in which Cataleya beats a guy senseless with a hand towel and then stabs him with a toothbrush, aren’t as painful as the clunky “romantic” interludes.”

So there you have it. Translation? Sounds like you might as well just wait until it comes out on Blu-Ray to rent it, or stream it when it hits Netflix, just to check out Saldana’s winning performance. In the meantime, you’re better off revisiting stuff like La Femme Nikita or Kill Bill.

Box Office Predictions: Don’t Be Afraid of the New Releases

It’s bad the battle for least embarassing, as three new releases are going to try (and most likely fail) to take the top spot from The Hel p, which won last weekend. This week brings Our Idiot Brother, Colombiana, and Don’t Be Afraid of the Darkto wide release, and – as it’s the end of the summer – they are all hoping that low competition and low expectations will help them to make modest profits. Columbiana stars Zoe Saldana and with it, she has the largest role for a female person of color this summer. Check out our predictions…

Colombiana screened mostly for junket press – which is a sign of low confidence – but when it comes to Luc Besson-produced action films, after Taken I wouldn’t count this picture dead. But it’s not going to open that strong either. The advertising on this has been low, and it’s coming during the end of summer, which – as I’ve said – is a dead season. If it finds its audience – which it might – it could do really solid numbers, something along the lines of last year’s Takers. As it has the exact same release date, a $60 Million cume would be the win for this picture.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark had a tumultuous post-production as the film was set up at Miramax, but then the company was sold three times before Film District finally got hold of the film. The MPAA rogered it by giving it an R rating when it’s got little on screen violence, and no profanity, but I guess the mood is so pervasive they’re worried about little kids being scared. That said, pretty much every Disney animated classic involves a parent dying or being mistreated, while the G-rated Beneath the Planet of the Apes features people being shot in the head, and the world blowing up. The main things they’ve had to sell is Guillermo del Toro‘s good will, and Katie Holmes - Mrs. Tom Cruise – who has never been much of a box office draw, and has never opened a picture. Dark is 2-D, which may give it an advantage over Final Destination 5 and Fright Night, but it is the third horror movie in as many weeks, and the reviews are mixed.

Our Idiot Brother feels like a dump (a “dump” is not a number 2, but a term for a film that is contractually obligated to be released, but is done so without any enthusiasm), or maybe it just doesn’t have the right mixture of things to get it some heat. But people seem to like Paul Rudd, and the supporting cast (including Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer). Maybe it’s that The Weinstein Company – who are releasing the film – are still fiscally crippled even after the worldwide success of The King’s Speech, or maybe the movie didn’t come together. But – while the other pictures might do business abroad – this is the sort of picture that doesn’t play internationally. Even if it did $20 Million for the weekend, it’s unlikely that the film will make money. But Paul Rudd is still something of a movie star, and had this come out in a March, perhaps it wouldn’t feel so secondhand.

Also this weekend Transformers 3 returns to Imax screens for a two week engagement. Studios used to reissue hit films after a successful run in the old days, and they did something similar with Spider-Man in 2002, but because there have been a number of pictures that haven’t done as well as hoped (Cowboys and Aliens, etc.), Paramount likely just sees an opening for a couple more bucks. The film is a little shy of $350 Million domestic, so perhaps that’s also a motivator – though the film has earned nearly $1.1 Billion worldwide. It will be interesting to see if this does drum up some business for the picture, as a reheated and somewhat tepidly received blockbuster didn’t seem to have audiences going crazy for it so much as it was the event film for that weekend.

Here’s my top five predictions:

The Help - $14.7 Million
Columbiana – $13 Million
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - $9.6 Million
Don’t Be Afraid fo the Dark – $9 Million
Our Idiot Brother – $7.3 Million

The Help is a big old word of mouth hit, and so is Rise of the Planet of the Apes. They are benefiting from weak competition, while the flood of new titles means that films like Cowboys and Aliens and Harry Potter are losing screens to films like Conan the Barbarian, which is doubly good for Apes as the last of the big summer event films. Not only is it facing weak competition from the new films, it’s the best “older” movie in a ten screen or less market.

Takers: Movie Review

Takers is what happens when half of Danny Ocean’s crew is combined with the team from The Italian Job, and the assassins from 1998′s The Big Hit. These are professional thieves, who dress nice, drive fast cars (and bikes), and aren’t afraid to kill someone when it comes to their money. Takers isn’t a particularly special heist movie but the actors try their best to make it one (and they look pretty good while doing it).

Here’s our review…

The Plot:

A group of career criminals are coaxed into performing an elaborate heist at the insistence of one of their former crew members. Not only is the job difficult but they only have a few days to plan (compared to the usual year) and their “inside” contacts are less than trustworthy. Hot on their tale is an overworked cop, who won’t rest until he brings the thieves to justice. Throughout his investigation and their preparation for the gig, the lines of good and bad become blurred.

The Good:

The Action: The trailer doesn’t do this film justice when it comes to the action. There are some slow-motion John Woo style shoot outs in this movie, along with a great Parkour sequence featuring Chris Brown pummeling through downtown Los Angeles. The sequences look so good because they’re all practical. The gun shots, the car crashes, the fight scenes, they’re all solid and appear real.
Idris Elba: The British actor plays the leader and co-founder of the crew (along with T.I.’s character) and he’s the center of it all. No move is made without his consent and he’s believable as a patriarchal figure amongst this group of grown men. He has the screen presence to pull it off.

The Bad:

Dialogue: There’s a lot of repetitive dialogue. “Goddammit” was used more times than I can count, even in situations when it didn’t need to be. Also, there were several corny lines used such as “It’s Showtime!” and “Let’s get paid!” They were forced attempts to sound hip.
ADR: The dubbing used was terrible especially towards the end during the actual heist. There are a lot of wide shots used and the director probably wasn’t able to pick up good audio so he had the actors go back and do ADR. Unfortunately, the words don’t match their mouths and instead of sounding as if it was happening in the moment, it sounds like an out of place narration.
Cliches: Several stereotypical situations that we always see in action movies rear their ugly head. Three of them play a huge part in the story so I won’t spoil it for you, but their easy to spot. The light bulb will go off and you’ll say to yourself, “I’ve seen this before!”
T.I. Harris: He’s one of the main characters in the film and it’s hard to watch his scenes because his acting is so bad. He over exaggerates all of his lines, and half the time you can’t understand him because of his thick Southern accent. How is it that Elba uses his British accent yet recites his dialogue clearly, and T.I. doesn’t?

Overall:

Takers is surprisingly entertaining. The acting and the story isn’t much but there are several sequences that are worth a second look.

Rating: 7/10

New Takers Trailer Looks Really Familiar

Do you have a craving for some really bad acting, stagnant fight choreography, and unnecessary and misused explosions? Lucky for you a new trailer for Takers has been released and it satisfies all those requirements. It’s an over the top action film with a premise that’s been used so many times it should be in public domain at this point. Takers stars Idris Elba, Paul Walker, Hayden Christensen, Chris Brown, Michael Ealy, Zoe Saldana, and Matt Dillon. Watch the latest trailer, if you dare…

The basic premise of Takers surrounds a group of professional thieves who join forces with an unlikely ally for one big heist. Elba’s character is the leader of the group, while Walker is his second in command. It looks like Chris Brown does all the leg work and Hayden Christensen is some type of bad boy with a flare for beatnik fashion.

The first Takers trailer was filled with cliched action but this one is ten times worse. The only difference between the two is the amount of coverage they give Dillon, who plays the stereotypical cop who’s always one step behind his targets. Haven’t we seen this movie before? It all looks so familiar.

Zoe Saldana to Star in Colombiana

Over the past two years the beautiful and talented Zoe Saldana has become somewhat of an action superstar with roles in Avatar, Star Trek, and most recently The Losers. The actress is currently in negotiations to star in another hard-hitting film entitled Colombiana that will be produced by The Fifth Element director, Luc Besson.

Besson also co-wrote the script for the film, which will be directed by Oliver Megaton. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Saldana will play a native of Bogota, who as a child witnessed her parents’ murder. She grows up to be a stone-cold assassin with the aid of her employer who happens to be her uncle. She’s a professional hit woman by day, but spends her personal time engaging in vigilante murders that she hopes will lead her to her ultimate target: the mobster responsible for her parents’ death.

Colombiana is set in both Latin and North America and is expected to begin production sometime late this summer. Assuming the film wraps during the fall, maybe that will leave a few months open for the actress to work on the Star Trek sequel?

Zoe Saldana on Spock Romance in Star Trek Sequel

Zoe Saldana will be hitting the big screen this weekend with the comic adaptation The Losers, after quietly appearing in last week’s Death at a Funeral. Over the past year she’s appeared in two major blockbusters Avatar and Star Trek and even though everyone loved the romance between Jake Sully and Neytiri we’re eager to find out if Uhura and Spock will eventually get it on. Saldana seems to think something might happen…

Saldana spoke with MTV about Star Trek 2, (she expects to shoot sometime later this year) and her hopes to see more of a Spock/Uhura romance the second time around. The actress wants the story to expand on the relationship they established in the first film but she’s not 100% sure if their characters can mate according to Star Trek lore.

“It would be interesting to see what they are going to do with it,” continued Saldana. “I really hope they keep [the relationship] and continue to explore it. But at the same time too — this is coming from my mother, who is a Trekkie — I could be wrong, but I thought that Vulcans only mate every seven years. So now that the planet [Vulcan] has been extinguished, it’s kind of interesting. Can Spock mate with a non-Vulcan?”

Someone out there needs to answer her question stat! For a lot of people the Spock/Uhura pairing was one of the few problems they had with JJ Abrams reboot and they thought it was played up a little too much. Personally, it was nice to see Spock getting the girl for once in his life. On the TV show, didn’t Kirk get a new lady almost every other episode? It didn’t matter is she was white, black, green, or covered with slim he got a piece. It’s Spock’s turn.

The Losers: Movie Review

At a press conference for The Losers, Jeffrey Dean Morgan said “Let the A-Team worry about us” and he may have a good point! It looks like the A-Team has got themselves some competition! After much discrepancy over the release date between the two film The Losers, which is another film about a rogue military group who perform a bunch of interesting hijacks and blow up a lot of stuff between humorous lines, hits theaters this weekend with a bang!

It’s hard not to let “The Losers” win you over! Find out why below…

The Plot:

The Losers are a special black-ops team whose members originated from several different branches of the military. In their own units, each one of them at some point or another lost a soldier under their command, hence they dubbed themselves “The Losers.” In the midst if a mission, the government decides they want them dead, for no real good reason, and they have to go underground to find out how to save their reputations and destroy “Max”.

The Good:

Chris Evans: I always thought of him as another one for those good-looking, extremely buff, cliched male actors… until this film. Who knew that he had a nerdy, over the top, humorous side to him? Evans’ was probably the only actor (although the rest of them all put in solid performances) that really brought a character to the big screen. He had amazing energy at all times and had amazing comedic timing. His lines very easily could have been cheesy but due to his performance, they were the highlight of the movie. Especially “That’s right bitches, I got a cross bow.” Hell yes!
Fun to Watch: With so many comedic/graphic novel/action films coming out one can easily get bored and/or feel like they’re watching a film they’ve seen before. Not everything in this film was unique but it was a fun and entertaining the whole way through.
The Humor: Thankfully the filmmakers seemed to realize that the film is ridiculous and they needed to just have fun with it. They don’t try to exist in reality, the go for fantasy and it’s pure fun.
Run Time: Finally! An action film that keeps it to the point! I’m so sick of sitting in theaters for 120 minutes. 98 minutes is all you need to have a good time. Everything was to the point, the pace was fast, and you didn’t feel like there was any unnecessary baggage.
The Ending: As I’ll talk about below, the film didn’t start out with a bang for me, but it sure did finish with one!

The Bad:

The Start: The first ten minutes, which try so hard to be fast paced and action-packed don’t really suck you into the world… in fact they do the opposite. It may have been the subject matter which they had to have because of the graphic novel, but it really distanced the audience from the story. Luckily it quickly recovered and pulled the audience in with all of the unique and charming characters.

Overall:

Buy yourself some popcorn, sit back and enjoy the ride! If you’re looking for a fun time in the theaters, this is the perfect film and would make for a great double-hitter with Kick-Ass.

Rating: 8.75/10

Zoe Saldana: Bad-Ass Chick Talks Losers and Avatar 2

Not too long ago we attended a press conference for The Losers where the lovely Zoe Saldana talked about what her life has been like with three huge action packed films back to back and what she would need in order to come back to Avatar 2. There’s no doubt that she has earned the title “bad-ass chick” between all of her amazing and aggressive performances that she’s put in with spaceships, a bow and arrow, and now a bazooka.

Below she talks about what her year (with a few small comments from Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has been like and why she loves being the only girl in an all male cast…

I wonder what kind of training did you do to own the title of “Bad-ass chick”?

Zoe Saldana: The stunt coordinator that worked on The Losers, was the stunt coordinator on Avatar so I’ve known Garrett Warren for three or four years. He trained me so he’s the one that has beaten me up and knows exactly what my body can do at times when I didn’t even know that I can do it myself. So, by the time we got to Puerto Rico, we basically just changed a couple things because I had to substitute the bow and the arrow for the guns and the knives and things like that.

Throughout the entire summer while we were shooting I was still training with Garrett especially ‘cause we really wanted to get that fight scene to be amazing ‘cause Sylvain wanted it to be violent but he always said it to us, he’s like “well, they’re beating the crap out of each other but they’re also getting to know each other” so it’s sort of like a conversation, a very violent conversation and Jeffrey and I really wanted to capture that.

How much fun was it kicking Jeffrey’s ass and being the only female in this ensemble?

Zoe: It feels good.

Jeffrey Morgan: She didn’t kick my ass. (laughter) It was even-Steven.

Zoe: You know, when you’re the only girl in the cast there’s a level of, I almost feel like you have twice as much work to do because you don’t want to be singled out, you’re already the only girl. So if you’re the one who says “I can’t do this” or it’s going to be like “Oh, my God she’s wimping out ’cause she’s a girl whatever,” so I toughed it out, I really wanted to impress the guys and I liked being around them. I’ve always feel like I can hold my own and Jeffrey was absolutely amazing in the fight scene. There were couple of moments there where you know where I had to immediately look at him like “Oh, my God, did I really hit you hard on your head?” Or he would look at me like “Did I slam you really hard?” But it was fun, I liked it.

You tend to play really strong female characters, have you ever considered doing something completely opposite of that?

Zoe: Like a “damsel in distress“? Of course. You know, you want to play great characters but right now I feel like Hollywood has made a riffing out of portraying women to be such canker sores. We just have to be rescued all the time ‘cause we are so incompetent but in reality, you know, sometimes art needs to reflect what’s going on in real life. In today’s society especially in American society, women are doing so much. I grew up in Queens in the 80’s when women were care-takers and they were the soldiers and I’m in that phase right now and until I burn that, then I’ll be the “damsel in distress” but right now I like holding a gun, I like participating in saving of the day. I think it’s really sexy and it’s kind of like my mom so that’s it.

Jeffrey and Zoe, you guys both has big actions movies come out one by one in the last year, do you feel like this is “your year?”

Jeffrey: I thought my year was coming until Zoe’s year came. (laughter) Now I’m just riding her coattails.

Zoe: I know I don’t only speak for myself when I saw as an artist you can only ask for one thing, is to be able to pay the bills, living off of your art enough to pay the bills so when you get to do that and also you’re recognized by amazing producers and directors for all the work that you put in.

We all imagine that there is going to be a sequel to Avatar so when James Cameron is ready to do that, will you have that down or are there different things you want to do with that performance?

Zoe: It’s whatever the boss says and as long as, he already how I like to approach, you know, I need at least six to seven months to get into my tier again of training and stuff and whatever is going to happen is going to happen. The good thing that we all know about Jim is that, I mean it’s not so good sometimes, sometimes we have to wait like ten years for it but by the time he does come around, he gives you something that sort of changes your life, you know, or at least touches it in such a way. So I at least know Avatar 2 is going to be as great as the first one because Jim is the S-H-I-T. (laughter)

You don’t feel like you have that down ‘cause you did learn it for four years?

Zoe: You know, it does take training. It’s not something that I can just like turn on or off, everything is a learned skill. The same way it took me two-three months to channel Aisha, you know, Neytiri is going to take her time as well. I mean there are people that are incarnating and it takes a little bit of preparation.

Zoe, didn’t wear high-heels in this film, which is great because it is hard to do what you did in high heels. Was it your idea to keep the boots flatter? What did you put into your costume?

Zoe: Magali Guidasci who’s an amazing costume designer and Sylvain had sketched out a very specific flavor or tone of each of the characters but they left enough space for each of us to come and incorporate just our, you know, our essence of how we were visualizing incarnating these characters. I have to say, I had to lose that battle and very much so to Sylvain because that hotel room honestly and I’m just telling you, I could have done it in black Gucci boots too but they wanted no heels. And I just though heels or no heels, a women can still kick a man’s ass, could if she proposes herself to with Louboutin’s or flats.

Earlier today we brought you five TV spots for the upcoming Sylvain White film The Losers, the live action adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic of the same name. If you thought the high octane action in those clips was too hot to handle we’re about to pour salt in your wound by posting 28 HQ photos from the movie. In their own units, each one of them at some point or another lost a soldier under their command, hence they dubbed themselves “The Losers.” After a mishap, The Losers are framed and sentenced to be taken out. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays Sargent Clay, Idris Elba is Roque, Chris Evans is Jensen, Columbus Short is Pooch, Zoe Saldana is Aisha, and Oscar Jaenada is Cougar.

In the following photos we get to see each character in their element. The majority of them are holding some type of weapon whether it be a gun, a missile launcher, or a suped up crossbow. It looks like the director pulls off a lot of outlandish stuff in this film and we’re not just talking about the stunts. We’re referring to the casting of Chris Evans as a tech nerd who’s supposed to be the least attractive guy out of the bunch (rolls eyes). Come on guys? Really?

Zoe Saldana Plans for Star Trek Sequel Before Avatar

Avatar and Star Trek are two high profile films that debuted to plenty of fanfare in 2009. They made a boatload of money and now have highly anticipated sequels set for release in the near future. Besides commercial and critical success another thing both films share is actress Zoe Saldana. She played Lt. Uhura in Star Trek and Neyteri in Avatar, and when asked which sequel she thinks will come first she admitted that Star Trek’s in the lead.

Saldana was out promoting her latest film, The Losers this weekend at WonderCon when she was asked about her next big project. Her main priority is to reprise her roles in both Star Trek and Avatar before embarking on any new material. Here’s what she had to say when asked which movie we’re likely to see first:

“I think ‘Star Trek,’” she replied. “Because that one’s already going into pre-production soon….” She paused. “From what I hear,” she corrected, playfully drawing out each word. “Unless J.J., who’s always full of surprises….”

I’m not surprised by this response at all because James Cameron likes to take his time with his material. We all know how long it took him to direct the first Avatar, and a film of that stature doesn’t need to be rushed. Even if fans are dying for more Pandora action I’d rather wait and see something good than not and be highly disappointed. As for Star Trek, it’s nice to hear that the film is nearing some kind of production. There have been a lot of possible storylines floating around and I’m interested in seeing which one JJ Abrams chooses.

The Losers Character Banners

The Losers will blast their way into theaters this spring and Warner Bros has just released six character banners featuring each of the film’s main characters. We’re talking Jeffery Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Columbus Short, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, and Oscar Jaenada. The film is directed by Sylvain White and is scheduled to hit theaters on April 23, 2010.

In their own units, each one of them at some point or another lost a soldier under their command, hence they dubbed themselves “The Losers.” Morgan plays Sargent Clay, Elba is Roque, Evans is Jensen, Short is Pooch, Saldana is Aisha, and Oscar Jaenada is Cougar.

Is it just me or do these banners look like they were taken straight from the comic? This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Saldana looks like she’s kicking ass and taking names. The direct comic book approach seems to be the trend with adaptations this year like with Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World where the trailer actually features words like “Kapow” flashing across the screen. I’m sure The Losers will take itself a little more serious but it could still work.

New Photos of The Losers

Six new photos have been released for the upcoming Warner Bros film, The Losers. It’s a live action adaptation of The DC/Vertigo comic of the same name and features an all star cast of badasses. As you can tell from the above photo, they’re not just pissed at the world, they’re also pissed at each other. The Losers is directed by Sylvain White, and stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the leader of a rag tag crew of military trained vigilanties.

The Losers are a special black-ops team whose members originated from several different branches of the military. In their own units, each one of them at some point or another lost a soldier under their command, hence they dubbed themselves “The Losers.” Morgan plays Sargent Clay, Idris Elba is Roque, Chris Evans is Jensen, Columbus Short is Pooch, Zoe Saldana is Aisha, and Oscar Jaenada is Cougar.

In the latest photos from the film, we see Morgan and Saldana getting too close for comfort, while Clay struggles to stay alive in the presence of Elba. Evans tries his hand at using a crossbow, while Saldana’s Aisha uses a heavy automatic gun as her weapon of choice. The Losers is scheduled to hit theaters on April 23, 2010.
