X-Men First Class: Movie Review

The X-Men are back with their latest edition X-Men: First Class, a prequel to all of the other X-men films showing us the origins of the gang. Rest assured that walking into this film you can spit out the awful taste of Wolverine and be excited take everything First Class has to offer. The quite film obviously has a much stronger script, they managed to gather a stellar cast of real actors, and did a brilliant job of controlling the chaos that comes with so many story-lines and characters that make the X-Men films so great. Though I’m not quite as keen as some of my fellow critics on this film, there’s not doubt that this is a great summer film and quite possible the best action film you’ll see this year (though I’d love to be disproved). Let’s find out why…

The Good:

Fassbender: As my fellow ScreenCraver Damon Houx said, “Michael Fassbender is officially a movie star now.” He literally just chews up this role and fascinates and intrigues you in every shot he’s in. He looks great on screen, he’s immensely talented and he has the ability to completely captivate a room. Watch out Pitt, Fassbender has officially made it.
All the Acting: The same goes for James McAvoy who gives an equally strong performance – though he isn’t getting as much recognition because he doesn’t get to play the fun bad-y and it’s always harder to play the good guy in a film like this. And supporting the fine lead actors were numerous other grand actors Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and numerous other faces you’ll recognize such as Ray Wise, James Remar and Michael Ironside.
Cameos: Don’t worry! I won’t spoil anything, but I will say that they have some well placed, well timed cameos for fan of the series to enjoy.
Tackling the Characters: There are a LOT of characters and emotional twists in this film, and it’s imperative to the film that you be invested in each individual. Luckily, they did a great job of giving every character their moment and balancing all of the different characters stories.

The So-So:

Kevin Bacon: Now I love me some Bacon as much as the next person, but for some reason he never transcended his own body and became the character. It may have been a better role for someone, who much like the rest of the cast you know, but isn’t quite as “known”.
January Jones: No one can pull off a diamond bikini better than her, but man oh man would it be nice to see her as something different than play the overly simplified, sexy blond. Someone get some dirt on her and make her cry goddammit!

The Bad:

The Camp: Now I love me a campy movie, but this film is not campy, it’s strong, powerful, dramatic, with some comedic moments. When they took the comedy over the edge and added those cliched campy moments it somewhat cheapened the rest of the film.

Overall:

This is most likely one of the better if not best action films you’ll see this summer (I will see Super 8 soon and see if I have to take this back). It’s not completely perfect and loses some steam (though I’m getting picky with that) in the last act, but it has a hell of a set up and ending, the acting in it would win awards if they were in an emotional drama and not a summer blockbuster, and there is plenty of razzle dazzle to keep everyone entertained. There’s plenty for both the boys and the girls of all ages in the film — it’s really an amazingly fun, accessible piece of cinema.

Tim Miller Signed On to Direct Deadpool

In Gavin Hood‘s Wolverine film, a number of additional X-Men characters were introduced. The two most high profile were Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) and Gambit (played by Taylor Kitsch). At the time Kitsch was a TV star, while Reynolds was a movie star, albeit mostly in comedies. It seemed odd casting, until right around release rumors circulated that Deadpool would get his own spin-off movie. Deadline Hollywood is reporting it now has a director: Visual Effects Supervisor Tim Miller.

Reynolds was talking at WonderCon about how he sees Deadpool as an R-rated film. That would be a nice change of pace, as it’s been a while since there’s been an R-rated comic book hero. But where Blade proved that it could work, The Punisher hasn’t played well in its multiple adapations to the big screen.

Reynolds is working on turning The Green Lantern into a franchise (audience willing), so he’d be pulling double duty, though Chris Evans has set the precedent for that. That said, with different studios (Warner Brothers vs. 20th Century Fox) and different comic book companies (DC vs. Marvel), this could get sticky. But I don’t think they can make the movie without Reynolds if it’s to be a big budget affair.

That said, Reynolds was all but assuredly signed to a contract for a Deadpool spin-off when he agreed to do Wolverine. At the time his stock was much lower, but between The Proposal’s box office success and him being Green Lantern and all, Fox may want to make that movie whether he wants to or not. I believe something similar happened to Jennifer Garner with Elektra. That they’ve hired a visual effects person to be the director doesn’t inspire as much confidence as hiring – say – Darren Aronofsky might.

1-1 Interview: James Marsden on Making Kids Movies For His Kids

This week in theaters James Marsden stars in Hop, the story of how a man became an Easter Bunny. James Marsden stars as the would-be bunny, who becomes friends with E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand), who is supposed to become the new Easter Bunny, but wants to be a drummer instead. Marsden has had a number of careers, as a TV star, as Cyclops in the hit franchise X-Men, and more recently he’s been an ace comic performer wtih a number of supporting turns in films like Enchanted and Hairspray. We talked about Hop, and some of his possible future and past projects, along with how his children have influenced his career. We also talk about his rumored involvement in the upcoming Three Stooges movie.

Did you always see yourself as a comic leading man? It seems a change from James Marsden, Superhero (or Superhero support).

James Marsden: What’s really nice is how my comic career has gone. For a while there after X-Men no one would see me for a comedy. People who knew me knew that I was capable of doing “character work” – I guess that’s how you’d put it – so there was this slow education where my agents got me together with a number of comedic writers and producers and went after the auditioning process to prove I wasn’t just the guy in the red glasses who could fire lasers out of his eyes. The last five years have been great, and the fans seem to like it. Now I find myself reminding people that I can do the other stuff too. Now it’s “Oh James, he’s the comedic actor.” I don’t want to come off like I’m complaining, but they really only remember you from your last movie. Hop was one specifically for my kids. I just finished Straw Dogs – which was about as dark as I’ve ever gone – and my thought was “wouldn’t it be nice to go do a family movie for my kids?” I was hesitant, though – I didn’t want it to be too soft. But Illumination (Entertainment, the animation production company who also did Despicable Me) bring a level of sophistication to the humor, and knowing Russell Brand was on board… I thought it was a pretty subversive – but still family friendly – take on the Easter Bunny. Illumination is good at gearing it so the adults will be entertained as well.

With a film like this it’s obviously effects heavy, as your co-star is a cartoon rabbit. What did you have to perform against? Did they give you a puppet or a green ball?

JM: I knew I’d be pretty much alone on set. It’s one thing to be on a set with green-screen and you’re reacting to claws coming out, it’s another thing to have your co-star in a buddy comedy not be there. So I got together with Russell beforehand in the recording studio and we figured out our dynamic and improvised a lot, so I got a taste of what he was going to do with the character, downloaded as much of that as I could to my brain and on set I’d try to remember. Every day I had to remind myself “just pretend like you’re acting opposite Russell Brand. That you’re not talking to a rabbit, or something that’s not there. Just imagine Russell.” To look at, there were little pieces of green tape that would represent his eye-line, which would sometimes move so I’d have to remember on what line the rabbit moved. And then there were takes where there was a stuffed animal. If you can imagine all the life and charisma that comes from a stuffed animal. It was an exercise in imagination.

Does that get easier?

JM: No, it was always hard. I never went home thinking a scene really worked. It’s like singing a duet without hearing your own voice. But I knew that was going to be the process on this, so I had to put my brain in a specific gear and I knew we were creating a puzzle and I was just a piece of the puzzle. But we’re just there for my stuff, so you really get the attention of (director) Tim (Hill) and the creative team. Creatively the focus was on me while shooting. And the Illumination guys were open, so I got to fool around and they’re always open to being different. You’ve got to be flexible. I know, I’ve watched a lot of these movies because I have two kids, and when I’ve seen movies that mix live action and animation, sometimes I feel a disconnect. How they’re looking at the characters, or the separation. So I was always asking to hold the rabbit, because I felt that it brings the two together more. I got into the technical part of it, but you have to remember to be a good actor too. It was a technical process, but I knew that it was going to be. It was probably my most challenging film to date. Here you go piece by piece by piece, without the other actor there to help you bring it to life.

I really appreciated your enthusiasm in the musical number.

JM: That was one of the funnier moments in the script when I read it. My character being dragged into these situations by a rabbit, and being forced to cope. Fred (his character) is a bit of a straight man – Russell’s got the more outrageous character.

What was your favorite part shooting the film, or your favorite completed scene?

JM: Well, when the film is finished, you’re getting to see another movie, because what I imagined the animation looking like finally comes together. I love the opening sequence in the chocolate and candy factory, because I loved Willy Wonka growing up – I could taste the screen, it was so engaging. You want to dive into a chocolate river. It’s a unique experience because are a cog in the wheel of this massive production, and when you see the film you feel like you’re seeing something you weren’t really a part of, so it’s great that it all came together the right way.

Are you signed on for sequels?

JM: I don’t know. That sort of stuff I don’t pay attention to – I should – but I just think about my contribution as a character and let my agents take care of that.

Films for (His) Kids

You felt with Hop your kids were picking the role?

JM: That was one of the main reasons. Doing a film I could take my kids to the premiere and share. I have a ten year old and a five year old and these are the types of movies I get to see. I have to set aside time once a month with my wife to see an Oscar movie. I know Illumination, I know Pixar, I know DreamWorks, I’ve seen these movies over and over and over again, and I think there’s few people doing them well, but they’re revolutionizing animated films. They’re real films, with Toy Story nominated for best picture this year, that’s a huge statement. Illumination is doing the same thing with their animation. I got to be a part of something I get to share with my kids.

What did they think of the premiere?

JM: They loved it. They weren’t too happy about kids surrounding me for photos and autographs – they got a little protective – but they loved the movie. When they were younger it was harder for them to see me on the big screen. In a five year old’s brain, when they see a movie it’s very real to them, and when my son was younger he struggled with that concept of seeing me on screen and then me sitting next to him on the couch. My daughter, same thing, she’d fast forward through my parts in Enchanted. She didn’t like seeing her dad on TV.

So she’s not up for watching The Box just yet.

JM: No, if there’s anything bad that happens to my character, that’s definitely not a good thing.

On Future and Stalled Projects, and Superhero Movies

Can you say anything about The Three Stooges?

JM: No, not really. All I can say is it’s interesting the power of the internet. How things can spread so quickly. I can’t comment other than it would be a fun transformation, and I would enjoy it. It’s one of those things where you don’t want to say something that can come back to bite you on the ass.

Can you say anything about Nailed?

JM: I can’t say what the future is, we haven’t finished the movie, and it’s been so long I should have made myself forget about it. It was so disappointing because it was a brilliantly written script by David (O. Russell) and Kristen Gore, and I had a blat with, it was another comedic role. I was very inspired, and now I look at it as a personal experience for me, and not putting any expectations for the movie to be finished. It could happen.

It’s all about getting the band back together at this point?

JM: It’s even more complicated than that. The movie was plagued with financial issues. I heard it tested on the internet. That’s where actors get their information. It doesn’t make it fun to talk about it, but I’m not much for looking backwards. I don’t wait for things to come together, I think about going forward.

Like with X: Men: First Class or the new Superman?

JM: I know so little about First Class. I’m still happy they’re making the X-Men movies, and Fox is smart they can keep making these movies with the wealth of back story – you could do a spin-off of every character. The challenge of the first was having ten to fifteen characters and having enough time to establish who they are, especially with the years of back story. But I don’t look back and feel any disappointment. I’d love to come back and do a new one with the original group, but they’re busy. As for Superman, I’m glad they’re doing it. And I just read that Amy Adams was cast as Lois Lane (his co-star in Enchanted), which is perfect. I look at every movie as its own thing, and they’re going for a totally different tone. I can only look at it as a fan’s perspective, which is why I wanted to be a part of it the one I was in. Now I look at it as a fan of the character, and I’m excited there’s a new one.

On Sex Drive

Let’s talk about Sex Drive, which I think is really underrated.

JM: That was a really selfish choice for me, it was a coming of age script, and I was 34-35, why should I do this? But the character just leapt off the page for me. I knew guys like that growing up.

Can you tell if that film has a cult following yet?

JM: It feels like it does, I have more people come up and talk to me about that then I would suspect for a movie I assumed nobody saw. I get more responses about that movie now then when it came out. To me it feels like more people are discovering it now. There’s people I’m meeting now, directors, where I ask “what do you think makes me right for this movie?” And on comedies, most often they reference Sex Drive. The people who have seen it, they’re really responsive – it’s been a help. And it’s turned into a real asset in terms of getting work in similar types of roles.

Darren Aronofsky Drops Out Of ‘Wolverine’ Sequel

Today has been a tumultuous day of news for comic book fans—in addition to finding out that Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot will ignore the cinematic mythos and aesthetic of the Richard Donner version, Darren Aronofsky announced that he has backed out of directing The Wolverine, the sequel to 2009’s X-men Origins: Wolverine.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aronofsky said that it all came down to family:

“As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of The Wolverine would keep me out of the country for almost a year… I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again.”

Well, that’s a pretty good reason—dude’s got to be there for his family. But one must also wonder if he backed out of directing the sequel to X-men Origins: Wolverine… because it’s the freaking sequel to X-men Origins: Wolverine. After directing Black Swan and The Wrestler, I’m willing to wager Aronofsky can aim a little higher (for instance, my script for Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper: A TGIF Movie! is still out there, Darren!).

Fox has also released a comment on the matter:

“While we are of course disappointed that Darren can’t do The Wolverine, we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both The Wrestler and Black Swan with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making The Wolverine. We will regroup and move forward aggressively.”

New Footage in Russian X-Men: First Class Trailer

After Wolverine, there was some hope that 20th Century Fox was going to steer their X-Men franchise into better hands when writer/director Mathew Vaughn took the helm for X-Men: First Class. With a cast including Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, January Jones, and academy award nominee Jennifer Lawrence, if nothing else, First Class seemed a step in the right direction. But then word leaked of late-in-the-game reshoots, and – for a film that’s due out in less than three months – there’s only recently been a teaser trailer and some posters that were strictly amateur hour. The first trailer offered a long prologue and some quick cut footage, but now’s there’s a Russian trailer with even more footage, a different focus and absolutely no English dialogue. Take a look…

Perhaps the Cuban Missile crisis was not a way to sell the film to the former Soviet Union. Such may explain why the focus of this trailer is slightly different, though it may also be that with a couple more weeks of finished footage after the first teaser, there’s just more to work with. And so here Fassbender’s Magneto gets more attention, and so does Nicholas Hoult’s Beast. Fassbender’s star and sex appeal has definitely gone up recently, so it’s not a bad idea to put him front and center.

It’s hard to know what to make of this project still. Each new bit of footage suggests that this could be a pretty good movie, but with the film’s January reshoots (which were rumored to go on as long as six weeks – as long as some film’s shooting schedule) and those recent terrible posters, there’s no guarantee this will be any better than Wolverine.

New X-Men First Class Photo Shows Havok

Earlier today we posted two horrible posters from X-Men First Class. They featured Charles and Erik aka Professor X and Magneto, and they were some of the worst one sheets we’ve ever seen. We think the folks over at 20th Century Fox picked up on the scathing response of fans and quickly decided to make up for it. Over on the official X-Men Movie Facebook Page, they’ve released a production still from the film that features Lucas Till as Alex Summers aka Havok.

We’ve been pretty straight forward about how we feel towards Havok and his involvement in this movie. It’s just strange that he would be a member of the first class of X-Men, when we all know his older brother Cyclops (Scott Summers) originally was. If this was a reboot, we’d understand the lack of consistency but isn’t this supposed to be a prequel? Doesn’t this film take place 37 years prior to X-Men (2000)?

Is Havok standing in an early incarnation of the Danger Room? Or is he trying to escape from some place? Do you remember when a sentinel popped up in the trailer for X-Men The Last Stand and it turned out to be a simulation from the Danger Room? Maybe this is one of those scenarios?

X-Men First Class is set to hit theaters on June 3, 2011.

Photo: X-Men First Class Inside the Hellfire Club

A new photo has been released from X-Men First Class, and it features two members of the villainous Hellfire Club. The heads of this elite group are Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost, as played by Kevin Bacon and January Jones. This image debuted over on Empire, and it has an interesting tone to say the least. Check out the full photo…

In the comics and the cartoons, the Hellfire Club is a group of snobby mutants who think they’re superior not only to humans but also their own kind. They typically live in a decadent mansion sprawled with Victorian era furnishings and books. Whatever it takes to make them look like they’re above it all is in their arsenal but judging from this photo they’ve switched it up a bit.

Director Matthew Vaughn obviously puts a new spin on the Hellfire lair. Instead of it looking like a study, it looks like Shaw and Frost are hanging out at a rave. The bright blue lights and all the mirrors make us want to whip out some glow sticks and dance.

X-Men First Class will open in theaters nationwide on June 3, 2011.

International X-Men First Class Posters: Charles and Erik

Two posters have been released for X-Men First Class and they highlight the leaders of the team, Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. The characters are portrayed by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender respectively and they look great in the roles. The following posters come courtesy of Film Z, and they pay homage to both the past and future. Check out the images below…

Do you notice the reflections in the bottom of the posters? With Charles, there’s an image of future Professor X sitting in his famous wheelchair and bald. In the poster with Erik, there’s a reflecting image of Magneto draped in his cape and helmet. The same helmet that we’ve seen appear in the trailer and other photos from the film.

Each poster begins with the tagline, “Before he was…” We’re really excited to see all the other members of the team. We’re not sure how they’d pull off this type of marketing with some of the other characters on the team i.e. Havok. It’s no secret that he’s a fill in for Cyclops in this movie.

X-Men First Class is scheduled to hit theaters on June 3rd.

X-Men First Class: Trailer Screencaps

After a ridiculously long wait, 20th Century Fox finally released a trailer for X-Men First Class and there was a lot to take in. Even though the franchise has been given a facelift with newer, younger actors, the action is still there and the trouble is still brewing. If the trailer moved a little too fast for you, we’ve got plenty of screencaps that will give you a better idea of what was going on. Take a look…

Still not a fan of Emma Frost’s diamond effect on screen. It was horrible in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and it’s horrible here. And we’re not even going to talk about how that movie took place in the 1970s where she was a teenager, but First Class is set in the 60s and she’s a 30 year old. Reboot or prequel? Choose one please.

As for Kevin Bacon and his interpretation of Sebastian Shaw, we’re going to let him slide because it looks like he’s putting his own spin on the character. We’d rather they try something different and succeed than try to make a carbon copy of the comic version and fail miserably. Plus, who wants to see him in that infamous ponytail?

Whenever they showed a shot of Havok aka Alex Summers in the trailer, Cyclops popped into our heads. His younger brother is in the First Class but he’s not? Really? And we’re still trying to figure out why Angel Salvadore is in the movie but the real Angel, Warren Worthington III isn’t? A lot of the casting doesn’t make sense and it’s hard to ignore.

We don’t want to come off as Debbie Downers or Bitter Bettys because there are some things we like about the trailer and Michael Fassbender is one of them. Talk about great casting! That guy looks just how we imagined Erik Lensherr would during his younger days. He knows how to illustrate controlled anger, and he’ll need that for Magneto.

Watch This: X-Men First Class Movie Trailer!!

After a long and tedious wait, 20th Century Fox has released the trailer for their comic adaptation, X-Men: First Class. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn, who was previously hired to helm X-Men: The Last Stand but had to back out for personal reasons. Five years after that travesty, he’s making it up to us by tackling the X-Men prequel, which focuses on the origins of the superhero team and their school. Check out the trailer…

We like how the beginning of the trailer ties into the original X-Men trilogy by showing footage from Bryan Singer’s first film. Beyond that, we still have concerns regarding the inclusion of mutants such Mystique, Havok, and Azazel in the First Class story. Kevin Bacon looks surprisingly better than we suspected as Sebastian Shaw. He’s not a carbon copy of his comic book counterpart but he makes the role work for him.

It’s great to see the original Blackbird and the early blue and yellow X-Men costumes. It’s good that they left one thing untarnished.

Matthew Vaughn ‘Freaked Out’ Over Leaked First Class Photo, Debuts Two More

Earlier this week, the internet was buzzing over a photo from director Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men First Class. The image featured the main characters, including the villains, wearing vintage costumes from the comic. This would have been a badass image to present to the public if executed correctly. The photo was a victim of bad airbrushing and photoshop, and Vaughn had no intention of releasing it. He recently spoke to the folks over at /Film, about the incident because he wants fans to know that he was just as surprised as us.

To make it up to you, he released two more photos from the film, which include a psychic Xavier and a magnetic Magneto. Take a look…

Vaughn’s reaction to the photo:

“I freaked out on them yesterday. I don’t know where the hell that came from. I don’t think it’s a Fox image. It’s not a pre-approved image. He assured us that he doesn’t plan to destroy what’s left of the X-Men film series. Vaughn said, “I’m a fan of X-Men. We’re not bastardizing X-Men, I’m trying to get them back to being whole again.” He also went on to discuss the costumes that the characters wear in the movie. He claims that they’re not a prominent part of the story but they do make an appearance.

The costumes are blue and yellow as well, because fuck it, lets take it back it the original. Also, by the way, those costumes are hardly in the movie. The main costumes are like these cool 60’s James Bond…”

For those of you who are still into the X-Men movies this should ease some of your fears. We jumped ship a long time ago, but that doesn’t mean you should give up hope. Here’s another new photo for you to drool over.

Twentieth Century Fox has begun obsessively marketing their upcoming comic adaptation, X-Men First Class. Yesterday they released a high quality cast photo, followed by several images from the film. Today, the first teaser poster for First Class has been released and it looks a little familiar. Take a look…

If you remember the teaser poster for the first X-Men movie back in 2000, this image might look familiar. They both center on the X symbol, the only difference is First Class represents the school and not the superhero team. The story takes place before the X-Men were formed. It centers on the children/teenagers who are trying to learn how to control their powers.

Official Plot Synopsis:

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

X-Men First Class will open in theaters nationwide on June 3, 2011.
