Earlier this week it was announced that Zack Snyder would direct Warner Bros’ Superman reboot Man of Steel, which left fellow candidate Darren Aronofsky in the dust. He was said to be the front runner for the gig, but the studio obviously decided to go in another direction. Their loss is 20th Century Fox’s gain, because there’s been movement on the Wolverine 2 front and it has Aronofsky written all over it.

It’s been well documented that Darren Aronofsky has no problem taking on campy or oddball material. He was attached to the reboot of RoboCop for over a year before MGM decided to pull the plug on it. Now we’re hearing his name in the same sentence with an upcoming comic book sequel — Wolverine 2.

Earlier this week we reported that Hugh Jackman had dropped out of the upcoming film Avon Man (which he’ll also produce) to begin training for Wolverine 2. The film should begin production pretty soon but it still doesn’t have a director. The first installment of the X-Men Origins series was directed Gavin Hood, but he won’t be returning for the sequel. For the love of film! I mean I support you Hugh on almost anything. Want to go ride a horse across a desolate land for 3 hours and I’m with ya, but when I hear the words “script” and “Wolverine” I get a little nervous. At least we have a different crew on board for this film and only one writer to boot! As we’ve known for some time, writer Christopher McQuarrie has decided to tackle to un-tacklable and has completed a Wolverine 2 script. He himself has turned in great work (The Usual Suspects) and not so great work (Valkyrie), so it’s still up the air as to what we can expect from this film.

Earlier this year, 20th Century Fox received a major blow when their upcoming release X-Men: Origins: Wolverine leaked onto the internet. Not only was there a copy out there for everyone to see, but it was an unfinished version that lacked major special effects. According to CNET, the FBI has finally made an arrest in the longstanding case.

How is this possible? I thought we all agreed that X-Men Origins: Wolverine belonged in a poo pile along with several other Fox comic based movies? The newly released DVD did monumentally well when it hit store shelves this past week. The title came in at number one on both the sales and rental charts for the week ending in September 20th.
