Colin Firth To Star In Park Chan-wook’s ‘Stoker’

Well, Colin Firth has selected his first post-Best Actor Oscar role, and it’s something of a surprise—he will star in Stoker, the first English-language film directed by South Korean director Park Chan-wook (the man beyond the wild brilliance of the Vengeance Trilogy—Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance). And, because it’s 2011 and all films must now be comprised of at least 23% undead material, it looks like Firth is playing a vampire.

According to /Film:

“Firth will star alongside fellow Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman and Alice in Wonderland herself, Mia Waskiowska, in the story of a girl and her mother who, after the death of the father, reunite with his mysterious brother. Kidman is the mother, Waskiowska is the girl and Firth would be the mysterious uncle, who is rumored to be a vampire. Hence the Bram Stoker-influenced title.”

While one’s initial reaction to yet another vampire flick may be one of disdain or cynicism, that’s not a bad cast, and anyone who has seen his work knows that Park Chan-wook is behind some of the most visually inventive and complex films in recent memory. And the fact that the script, “written by Prison Break star Wentworth Miller, showed up on the 2010 Black List,” doesn’t exactly hurt its chances, either. Cautiously optimistic about this one.

Comic-Con 2010: Resident Evil: Afterlife 3-D First Look

Well, I guess they’re still making these movies. Director Paul W.S. Anderson, Milla Jovovich, and Ali Larter came out at Comic-Con to plug the new Resident Evil movie, which is in….get ready….3-D! We’re still excited by that, right? Listen, if you saw the 3rd, or even 2nd Resident Evil film, then nothing I can say will persuade you to avoid this one, so you might as well come on in and find out what they shared with us…

On top of the theatrical trailer that’s already been released, they unveiled a scene in which “The Executioner,” a bad guy from the Resident Evil 5 video game, battles the two leading ladies in what looks like a prison shower. Once the fighting starts the film starts moving in super slow motion. The giant axe wielding, nail faced bad guy starts blindly swinging his weapon, slicing pipes in half, sending water gushing everywhere. They jump around, slide through puddles, and send little droplets of water flying in all three dimensions. It looks so real! Just like water does in real life! Did you hear me? WATER! WOAH!

I’m sure the slow motion is intended to show off the glorious image of 3-D, but the scene drags on so slowly, and the fighting style is so plodding, that it gets extremely boring VERY quickly.

To its credit though, the film was shot on James Cameron’s Phantom 3-D camera system, so the effect was not simply a digital afterthought. When the president of Hollywood demanded more 3-D movies so they could charge 20% more for a crappy picture, Paul W.S. Anderson clearly had the vision to jump forward and say, “you know what would look great in 3-D? Brains!”

New Resident Evil Afterlife Theatrical Trailer

A new trailer has been released for Paul WS Anderson’s latest zombie sequel, Resident Evil Afterlife. Unlike the teaser, this version actually gives us some insight into the story. Alice (Milla Jovovich) has learned a few new tricks and gained few new friends since the last time we saw her. Check out the trailer…

The trailer claims that the film was made with the best and latest 3D technology, yet the special effects look horrible. If the CGI looks bad, how can we trust the 3D? In terms of the story, Alice can clone herself now? There were a couple shots of her and one or two others who look like her in the middle of battle. That’s an interesting addition.

In Resident Evil Afterlife, Alice continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead takes them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of zombies and Alice and her friends are about to step into a deadly trap.

Last week a few photos were released from Paul WS Anderson’s latest venture, Resident Evil: Afterlife. Alice (Jovovich) continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead takes them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead – and Alice and her comrades are about to step into a deadly trap.

If the film’s plot doesn’t peak your interest, here’s something that will: Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) will be back! That’s right, the original (and real) female hero of the Resident Evil franchise will appear in the fourth film following her brief stint in Resident Evil: Apocalypse. This means we’ll get to see both of the original characters (Chris and Jill) from the video game in the same film at the same time. It’s about damn time!

Resident Evil Afterlife debuts in theaters on September 10, 2010.

New Resident Evil Afterlife With Chris, Claire, and Alice

Three new photos have been released for the upcoming sequel Resident Evil Afterlife that features Milla Jovovich returning as the franchise hero, Alice. This time she’s once again joined by Claire Redfield who brings along her older brother Chris. Chris’ presence in the fourth film is interesting because he appears in the very first Resident Evil video game. What took him so long to join the party? Check out the photos below…

The official plot synopsis for the film has yet to be released but it will probably center on Alice and her buddies taking down the infamous company responsible for the zombie epidemic once and for all.

Is it just us, or are these some of the most well dressed vigilante fighters you’ve ever seen? Their outfits look more fashion than military but since this is a movie, we’ll let it slide. As for the addition of Chris Redfield, we’re happy to see him but we’re not sure if Wentworth Miller will be able to live up to our expectations. Chris is the original badass in the video game along with Jill Valentine (can we get her back please?). Do you think he can pull this off?

First Resident Evil Afterlife Trailer

It’s here!!! The first trailer for the fourth film in Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil franchise is online. Earlier this week we debuted a few photos from Afterlife, which featured the return of its star Milla Jovovich as the reluctant hero Alice, alongside Ali Larter as Claire Redfield. In this installment, they want you to know it’s all about the action and of course the 3D. Check out the trailer…

Not to burst your bubble or put a damper on your expectations, but this trailer looks horrible. There’s never been anything good to come out this franchise and this promo solidifies that. The movie will be in 3D and they mention it more than once in the trailer with words like “revolutionary” and “James Cameron’s technology”, which doesn’t help because the special effects look like crap.

As for the use of the actual 3D, a lot of projectiles will be thrown at the camera giving the audience that in your face feeling. This trailer disappoints on so many levels because as a viewer you have no idea what’s going on. Yes, it’s a only a teaser but tease us with something else besides bad special effects, action, and Ali Larter running in the rain.

Resident Evil: Afterlife Photos With Alice, Claire, Chris

A few high quality photos have been released for Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest film, Resident Evil: Afterlife. It’s the fourth installment of the long running videogame based franchise that will once again have Milla Jovovich returning as Alice, the chemically engineered heroine fighting her way through a zombie infested world. Check her out in action…

The first images from the film debuted via MySpace and feature Jovovich’s Alice, Ali Later’s return as Claire, and Wentworth Miller as her brother Chris. After looking over these photos the one thing I have to say is, it looks like someone’s been playing the Resident Evil 5 videogame. There are definitely some characters that show up in the movie that also apparear in the game here.

In a world ravaged by a virus infection, turning its victims into the undead, Alive (Milla Jovovich), continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead leads them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead and Alice and her comrades are about to step into a deadly trap.

I stopped having hope for the RE franchise a long time ago, but some fans are still keeping the faith. I have to admit that the dynamic of having both Claire and Chris will be a great homage to the game since they completely nixed Jill Valentine after the second movie. If these photos aren’t enough for you, the film’s first trailer is expected to drop this Saturday at 2:15pm PST on MySpace Horror. Keep an eye out.

First Resident Evil: Afterlife Set Photo

The cast for the upcoming fourth installment of the Resident Evil franchise were caught filming recently in Toronto, Cananda, and we’ve got the first look at the actors on set. The new movie is entitled Afterlife and will have Milla Jovovich reprising her role as Alice, the superhuman heroine of the film series. In the following photo we to get to see her as well as cast mates Wentworth Miller and Ali Larter in costume.

Jovovich recently tweeted some updates on the film where she discussed the amount of fire power she’ll get to use this time around. According to the actress, she’ll have her hands full with “2 smith&wesson 460 revolvers, 2 sawed off double barrel shotguns, 1MPSK submachine gun,2MP9 submachine guns and 1 M4 assault rifle.” It sounds like plenty of zombies will be getting their heads blown off in this one.

In the above photo it features Miller, Jovovich, and Larter on what appears to be a huge boat. They don’t look too happy with the paps snapping pictures of them, but that’s the nature of the beast. From the character descriptions Miller will be playing Chris Redfield, and Larter will return as Claire Redfield.

As a fan of Miller, it’s good to see him in another feature film, and the fact that he has a blade on his back makes him look extra bad ass in this shot. The biggest question a lot of people want an answer to is, where is Jill Valentine? Seriously where did she go? Why does it take Chris eight years before he makes a movie appearance even though he was in the original video game? This only shows you have far the movie and the game are apart in terms of characters and storylines.

Resident Evil: Afterlife is scheduled to hit theaters on August 27, 2010.

Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller Join Resident Evil

Last week, we told you that actor Boris Kodjoe had recently joined the cast of the upcoming sequel Resident Evil: Afterlife alongside Milla Jovovich. According to Empire, two more actors have signed on to co-star, and one of them is already familiar with the franchise. Ali Larter will reprise her role from Resident Evil: Extinction, while Prison Break alum Wentworth Miller has also been cast in the film.

Larter will return as Claire Redfield, the supporting character she played in the third film, while Miller’s role isn’t as easy to describe. There’s no name, no nothing on this guy, not even a vague character description. Nothing has been confirmed beyond the fact that the actor has officially signed on, so we’ll have to leave it at that until the studio decides to spill the beans.

Even though they’re being tight-lipped about the film’s premise, co-star Kodjoe gave us a small dose of what we can expect in Afterlife.

“I play the leader of the survivors in LA,” says Kodjoe. “Milla Jovovich’s character, Alice, is roaming the world looking for survivors and… she comes across an LA jail… and she lands on top of the roof and partners up with me to fight the guys that are coming after them. We’re trying to get all of the survivors out of the jail to safety.”

I wonder if their going to overlook the fact that Alice went all supernatural in Extinction? If you haven’t seen the film, spoilers ahead. Remember in the third film, she had developed those creepy powers from her stay at the Umbrella lab? It was a weird addition to the nonexistent story that film had to offer. I hope they get rid of that.
