Steven Soderbergh‘s plague thriller Contagion brought down The Help this weekend, as we predicted. The Warner Brothers picture made $23.1 million during its opening weekend, conquering other new releases like Warrior and Bucky Larson: Born to Be A Star. Contagion hit strong, winning over both audiences and critics – so far, the film holds an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an even better rating from our critic Damon Houx who also interviewed the stars and director. Following its three-week streak at the top of the box office, The Help came in at No. 2, making $8.7 million (bringing its total to $137 million). Warrior, another hit with the critics, landed quietly at No. 3, earning $5.6 million. As for Adam Sandler‘s new project Bucky Larson, well, the film didn’t make it to the top ten. During its weekend debut, the porn comedy landed thirteenth, making only $1.45 million.

After a couple of weeks of super weak titles, Contagion is the first A-lister vehicle in quite some time. He’s paired with Joel Edgerton, another of the class of 2010 who made a big impression in Animal Kingdom. Both are playing the children of Nick Nolte, in what looks to be a inspiration movie about fighting mixed martial arts. Take a look at the trailer…

If you’ve been wondering where Tom Hardy has been hiding, he’s probably somewhere pumping iron for his role as Bane in Christopher Nolan’s sequel The Dark Knight Rises. But prior to that, he got in shape for the indie fighting flick Warrior, which co-stars Australian Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte. You might be asking yourself, when, where, and what is Warrior?! Allow us to introduce you to the film. Check out the poster…

If there’s was one person in Hollywood you could choose to train you in a technique of martial arts who would it be? I’d go for Jet Li, Jackie Chan, or Jason Statham, but director Gavin O’Connor prefers his mentors more on the weathered side. According to FirstShowing, O’Connor has cast Nick Nolte as the lead in his MMA centered film, Warrior. Nolte will play “an ex-Vietnam vet boxer-turned-steel mill worker whose family was torn apart by his alcoholism.” Sounds like a role he was born to play.
