Oliver Stone returns to the big screen with the long awaited sequel to his 1980s hit Wall Street. Money Never Sleeps takes place during the 2008 recession and follows a new and younger group of Wall Street traders. The film doesn’t try to copy the original as much as you might think. Yes, there’s the mentoring of an up and comer by a devious veteran but it also tackles the politics and corruption present in the new millennium. Money Never Sleeps opens a whole new bag of worms.

The Plot:

Money Never Sleeps is set 20 years after the first film and centers on a young Wall Street trader named Jacob Moore (Labeouf), who gets taught some hard lessons in the business. After emerging from his stint in prison, Gordon Gekko has become a popular author and media expert on all things financial. He’s also Jacob’s future father-in-law who helps him take down the corrupt bank CEO, Bretton James (Brolin). In exchange for his services, Moore has to help Gekko repair his estranged relationship with his daughter Winnie (Mulligan). He soon discovers that playing with money is like playing with greed and greed isn’t good, it’s evil.

The Good:

• The Cast: Money Never Sleeps is filled with a cast of Oscar winners and nominees led by the cool and collected Michael Douglas. Every actor elevates the other’s performance, which makes the film more watchable and more entertaining. LaBeouf may seem like an odd choice for such a dramatic role but he really brings it and proves that he can hang with the big dogs.
• The Cinematography: New York City is shown in the way that would make any outsider jealous. It’s shot beautifully with the architecture being somewhat of a secondary character in the film.
• The Wardrobe: All of the characters have money and we can tell. Their dressed from head to toe in the most expensive and tailored clothes. You will walk out of the theater with a sudden desire to hit the mall. The film makes you not only want to look good, but powerful as well.
• The Set Design: Everything from the Wall Street offices, to the lofts, to the mansions are crafted with such detail. The set designers make sure that every nook and cranny tells a story about the characters and they do!
• Carey Mulligan: Earlier I noted the cast but Mulligan’s performance deserves to be called out. Her portrayal as the long suffering daughter of Gekko and fiancee of Jacob is the heart and soul of the film. She’s the glue that holds both men together whether they realize it or not, and when she breaks the viewer does as well. That’s how good she is.

The Bad:

• The Length: The only bad thing about the film is its length. The last 15 minutes could have been cut out. The story seems to have a natural resolve at a certain point but then it throws you a curve ball that then has to be played out. Unfortunately, by that time you’re ready for everything to wrap up.

Overall:

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps is a pleasant surprise. It’s not better than the original but it’s a solid stand alone film.

Rating: 8/10

Carey Mulligan is on a roll. Over the past two years, the actress has landed one meaty part after another, with one of them resulting in a prestigious Oscar nomination (An Education). This fall she has two films opening within a week of each other, Never Let Me Go and the highly anticipated sequel Wall Street Money Never Sleeps. The actress has worked with some heavy hitters in her day but Michael Douglas‘ Gordon Gekko is a different kind of monster.

In Money Never Sleeps, Mulligan plays his estranged daughter Winnie Gekko, a young journalist who runs an alternative website that focuses on exposing corruption in politics and big business — she’s the antithesis of her dad in every sense of the word. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Mulligan in a one-on-one interview, where we discussed her experience working alongside Douglas and being under the direction of Oliver Stone. She also spoke about her future goals and whether or not she’d ever tackle a comedy (paging Russell Brand).

How do you go from An Education to playing the daughter of Satan in a suit?

Carey Mulligan: Good question! I don’t know. It was completely mental. You know I got a phone call from Oliver Stone asking me to come to LA and read the script. He had seen An Education so for some reason he equated that with Wall Street. Very strange, but lucky for me. That was the first time I hadn’t had to audition for a job, which is rare. So I went out and met him and read the scenes and said yes pretty much right away. But it was sort of out of nowhere and it’s the first time that could have happened. I’ve never even been called up by a director before.

Did you meet Michael shortly after or did you guys do the method thing where you didn’t speak because you’re estranged in the movie?

CM: Well, we did that to an extent, but we rehearsed together. We did rehearse because we had to figure out so much stuff. When he was invented, she wasn’t in the first film, so we had to make up her whole life really. So me and Michael and Oliver sat down with three weeks of rehearsal and we used a lot of that time to figure out their relationship and how much time they spent apart. And then when we were shooting, we did keep a distance. We weren’t sort of hanging out off set. And we kind of both knew that’s what we had to do. It wasn’t deliberate, like “I’m not going to talk to you for three months.” It was just sort of staying away. It helped scenes. If we had been very fond of each other off set, those scenes would have been much harder to play, so we just sort of kept a discreet distance.

If your character Winnie dislikes her father and what he does so much, why is she dating someone in the exact same field?

CM: I know. Well, there’s kind of a Freudian thing going on where it’s like you date your father and all that insanity. There’s also, you know, the fact that you can’t really help who you fall in love with.  In the beginning of the film, he is the best version of a Wall Street trader. He’s ambitious and he’s in that world, but he’s using his skills and he’s using that world to make this great energy thing happen. He’s trying to use it for good. It doesn’t sit easily with her and she doesn’t enjoy the company of the people who are in that world. Especially that ball that she goes to, she’s sitting with him and Bretton. He’s the devil to her. And she’s irritated because he’s sort of charming and she doesn’t want to be charmed by him. So that whole world is kind of not something that she’s comfortable with. But if anything Jake is the best version of a Wall Street trader. He’s trying to do something positive, so I think that’s how she kind of reconciles it with herself.

I don’t think she hates her father because whenever there’s an emotional scene, and you guys are going at it I see more hurt than anger. How does she, from your perspective feel about her father?

CM: Just completely abandoned, you know. I think she just wishes that things could have been different. It’s more of the pain of like life could have been so much better and so different had he been there. I think she’s convinced herself, whether it’s true or not, that if he had been around and he hadn’t been in prison, her brother wouldn’t have killed himself. That if he had been around, he wouldn’t have gone off the tracks and started taking drugs and fucking around with other people. He would have been there. And that’s the pain of it. It’s more that she felt like she just lost her father. And it’s less to do with the crimes that he committed and all that stuff. I mean that’s painful, but that’s forgivable. The fact that he wasn’t there was sort of the ultimate pain for her. Her whole life was altered by him going to prison and losing her brother, which is something she’ll never recover from.

How was it to be directed by Oliver Stone?

CM: It’s great. You know, I heard all the crazy Oliver Stone stories before I signed on. And I was nervous, but I never saw a negative side to Oliver. He’s kind of awesome. He’s just the most unique person I have ever met. And also one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. He’s so, so clever and so knowledgeable about everything: politics and finance and current events. He really knows everything. And he was really supportive. He treated me kind of like one of the boys. He didn’t really coddle me and treat me like a girl particularly. He was really focused on the work. He was insightful and he knew the script back to the front. He also knew our backstory that we invented and so every time I had a struggle with anything, he would just bring me back to the story. And that’s kind of how I like to work. I like somebody who lets me basically do what I want, but keeps me on the right track and doesn’t let me go off into completely terrible territory.

What do you think Stone is trying to say with Money Never Sleeps that he didn’t touch on in the original Wall Street?

CM: I think he never would have made it unless there’s something to say. There were two things. I think he wanted to articulate what happened in 2008 in an accessible way, and the way of doing that is to make a family drama and surrounding it with the crash. And also, I understand it better than I did before, and that’s sort of one of the key things about it. It is about greed and the same things that got us into trouble last time are the things that cause the crash this time. But it’s sort of imbued with a little bit of hope this time. It’s sort of trying to say that there has to be another way, that capitalism or just accruing wealth… It will constantly come back to this problem if we continue like that, so we need to find ways to get out of that system or make things better.

Were you on set the day that Charlie Sheen did his cameo?

CM: Yes. Everybody came in that day early to watch that happen. I mean everybody was behind the monitors like: “What? This is crazy!” Yeah so everyone was there. We were so excited. It took like two hours to shoot. I just wanted to watch him. I couldn’t believe he was in the room. It’s an awesome reveal.

I know that you’re British but you play an American in the film and you did a great job with your accent. Who was your dialect coach?

CM: Tim Monich was my accent coach. He’s sort of one of the best in the country, I mean if not the best, basically. And he made me tapes and he wrote out my script in phonetics and we had coaching sessions together throughout the filming and he was on set everyday listening in and kind of nudging me in the right direction here and there. You know, I didn’t want it to sort of dominate. If it was distracting, if I started thinking more about the accent than the scene, then I would just forget the accent and just fix it afterward. Especially in sort of big dramatic scenes, I would say to Oliver like, “If I go into English, just let me and I’ll fix it when they dub it later.” Which didn’t happen that much, I think we fixed like one or two lines in the edit. Most of the time, I kind of felt all right. It’s difficult. It’s like wearing a veil. You feel like you can’t quite see people properly. I didn’t want it to detract. And I think the truth of the character was more important and if the accent suffered a little bit then it wasn’t a huge problem.

You’ve been very busy over the past few years. Never Let Me Go was released on the 15^th and Wall Street will open on the 24^th and then when you’re done promoting, you’re going to shoot Drive. After that what’s your plan?

CM: Holiday [laughs]. No I’m doing a play next year on Broadway, which is an Ingmar Bergman film that’s been adapted for the stage called Through the Glass Darkly, which is sort of a weird play set in Sweden.

When did that come out?

CM: Oh, decades ago, I think, its an old old film. A 70s film. They did it in London just recently and then its just sort of transferring to Broadway and they’re recasting it, so hopefully do that, we don’t have a director yet but that’s the plan.

You’ve done stage work prior to films, is that where your career began?

CM: Yeah, mainly in London but I did a play on Broadway as well.

You’ve done a lot of drama thus far, could you see yourself in a comedy?

CM: Yeah, maybe I’ll give it a go, I don’t know. If I was going to do it, it would be something that had a heart to it.

When was the last time you laughed at something and was like, “Oh, this is hilarious!?”

CM: I actually thought Get Him To The Greek was really funny, I don’t think many people saw it. I thought it was hysterical. I thought Russell Brand and Jonah Hill were really funny.

You and Russell Brand should do a movie together.

CM: I’ll do it.

Your accents would kind of clash though. You’re both British but from different areas right?

CM: I’m posh British and he’s Cockney British. He’s got a London accent and I’ve got a boring middle class accent.

Today we have another scene from the movie that features Gordon Gekko trading insults with his younger and richer nemesis, Bretton James who’s played by Josh Brolin. When Gekko was at the top of his game James was an up and comer and as you can see there’s some animosity between the two. Now that Gekko is no longer top dog, he has some resentment towards James. Don’t you love the insults he throws his way? ” You know what they say? Fools make money, bears make money, pigs get slaughtered.” Classic.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps was originally scheduled to hit theaters in April but has been pushed back to September 24th.

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps was originally scheduled to hit theaters next month but according to a recent report from THR, it’s not happening. The film was slated to debut on April 23rd, and now it won’t appear during the spring at all. It won’t even make the cut during the summer blockbuster season, instead it will premiere this fall in September.

There hasn’t been a definite reason given why 20th Century Fox decided to bump the movie back two seasons, but it will pop up in theaters on September 24th and not a day sooner. The competition opening that week includes Kevin McDonald’s Eagle of the Ninth and Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians, which could spell disaster for the film on the box office front. Legend of the Guardians could tap into that golden family demographic and walk away with the top spot that weekend.

I’ll admit, the trailer does make it look a lot better than I thought it would but this delay worries me. Either the studio is trying to get in on some awards season action, or the movie isn’t all that great. Hopefully, it’s not the latter but these days you never know.

Why do you think Fox pushed the release date for Wall Street 2 back? Do you think this a bad sign?

An international trailer has been released for Oliver Stone’s long awaited sequel, Wall Street Money Never Sleeps. It’s a worthy follow up to the teaser trailer that showed less footage but still built up the anticipation. With this trailer you get to see more of the story and the characters led by Michael Douglas‘ Gordon Gekko.

After watching this version of the trailer, I have to admit it shows a LOT of important footage. They pretty much give away what happens in the final act of the film, as well as the relationship between Shia Labeouf and Carey Mulligan’s characters. After emerging from his stint in prison Gordon Gekko has become a popular author and media expert on all things financial. Labeouf’s character Jake is completely enamored by his charisma and his knowledge, and like most young brokers falls under his spell.

Mulligan plays Gekko’s daughter and Jake’s fiancee and throughout the entire trailer she constantly warns Jake to stay away from her father. There’s also an appearance by Frank Langella who looks insane in ever shot he’s in, and Josh Brolin who attempts to kill Jake with his motorcycle. Thanks trailer people for telling us all the good plot points in the film.

Yesterday, the teaser trailer for Oliver Stone‘s long awaited sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps finally arrived and it unveiled a new Gordon Gekko. He’s fresh from prison and ready to take on the world that he once dominated, the only problem is things have changed, and not for the better. The first official poster has been released for the movie and it looks really familiar.

Money Never Sleeps will mimic a lot of the original story from the first Wall Street movie. Labeouf’s character is an up and coming trader on Wall Street who gets taught some hard lessons in the business. In the midst of it, he unites with the infamous Gordon Gekko to save the financial community from the oncoming economic collapse. If that’s not enough for you, he also gets involved with Gekko’s daughter and tries to find out who’s responsible for the death of his former mentor.

The first poster for the film looks eerily familiar to the poster for 1997′s The Devil’s Advocate with Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. It looks like Labeouf’s character is making a deal with the devil, which may be another reason why I can see the correlation. Even though Shia cleaned up from head to toe for this film, it’s hard to buy him in this role. He’s 23 years old and still has a baby face. He looks like he just got out of his economics class not off the Wall Street trading floor.

To be fair when Charlie Sheen starred in the original film, he was only 22, but a lot more believable. Here’s the poster for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

We’ve been seeing a lot of photos from the upcoming Oliver Stone sequel, Wall Street:Money Never Sleeps, and now we’ve finally got a trailer. The film will debut this year and takes place over 20 years after the original first hit screens. It marks not only the return of Stone as the director, but Michael Douglas in his Oscar winning role of Gordon Gekko. Throw in Shia Labeouf, Carey Mulligan, Josh Brolin, and Frank Langella and you’ve got a party.

The trailer shows Gekko emerging from prison and realizing how much everything as changed since the last time he was out. Something that is heavily noted by his large, blocky cell phone. Several characters are introduced including a motorcycle riding trader (Labeouf), and a slick banking executive (Brolin). Labeouf sticks out like a sore thumb in this video, and I’m having a hard time taking him seriously in this role.

This year we’ll see the long gestating sequel to the Oliver Stone eighties flick, Wall Street emerge from the ashes. The new film is called Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and it stars Shia Labeouf as a young trader who bites off more than he can chew in the dog eat dog world of the stock market. Over at USA Today, they debuted some high quality photos from the film that feature the young actor trading in his t-shirt and jeans for a few custom suits and some hair gel.

The film takes a page out of the original’s script, with the only difference being the time. It’s set 20 years after the first film and centers on an up and coming Wall Street trader who gets taught some hard lessons in the business. In the midst of it he unites with the infamous Gordon Gekko to save the financial community from the oncoming economic collapse.

If that’s not enough for you, he also gets involved with Gekko’s daughter and tries to find out who’s responsible for the death of his former mentor. And we can’t forget that Gekko has been recently released from prison for all the devious stuff he did in the first movie. In his case, greed wasn’t always so good.

In the following photos we get a glimpse of co-star Josh Brolin who is described as the new villain, which will be entertaining to see. He’s filling the bad boy shoes that Douglas left open and he’s more than talented enough to take on the challenge.

Our first official look at the cast of the upcoming Wall Street sequel Money Never Sleeps has appeared online and it’s thanks to the folks at Vanity Fair. The magazine that’s known for its breathtaking photos under the creative direction of photographer Annie Leibovitz. The whole cast showed up for the shoot, including Satan’s spawn Gordon Gekko aka Michael Douglas…

The cast of Money Never Sleeps is led by Shia Labeouf, and the film’s story will mimic some of the original content from the first movie. I was wondering when we’d get to see some photos of Michael Douglas on the set of Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. We previously brought you some shots of Shia Labeouf, Frank Langella, and director Oliver Stone filming in New York, but Douglas was nowhere to be found. Thanks to the people over at Splash News, we’ve discovered some images of the original bad boy broker over 20 years later.

Take a look at Gordon Gekko in action…

After going through these photos I noticed two major things. Michael Douglas looks like Don Johnson from his Miami Vice days, and Shia looks like he’s playing dress up in adult clothes. I understand the guy is a 23 year old man, but I can’t get Even Stevens out of my head here. In the film, Gekko will be coming off of a lengthy prison stint due to his years of dirty dealings in the stock market.

Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps is scheduled to hit theaters April 23, 2010 via Twentieth Century Fox.

Last week we brought you some behind the scenes photos of Shia Labeouf, Frank Langella, and director Oliver Stone on the set of Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. As an obvious observation, Michael Douglas was nowhere in sight. The actor is set to reprise his Oscar winning role of Gordon Gekko in the film, which has been over 20 years in the making. We haven’t heard much from Douglas since his initial attachment to the sequel, but the actor has finally broken his silence and is filling us in on what his character’s been up to for the past two decades.

In an exclusive interview with Empire, Douglas opened up about Gordon Gekko and gave a good “where are they now” synopsis of the character.

It’s 22 years later,” Douglas explains. “Gordon has done about eight years in jail and got out in about 2001. The picture predominantly focuses on these last couple of years on Wall Street, which nobody anticipated. We shot the first one in 1986 and it was a wild, wild colorful time. And here we have both a train crash and a larger-than-life period leading up to that train crash. It’s an exciting time to make a picture about Wall Street.”

With Gekko back on the scene, where does that leave the newly appointed bad guy Josh Brolin? According to Douglas, Brolin will definitely be the villain of the piece, and describes his role as having a bit of “Terence Stamp, from the first one in there.” If Gekko will be hitting the streets after being a jail bird for the better part of the last decade, does that mean he’ll be a changed man?

“Is this a softer Gekko? Eh, I can’t say that. I think he’s got some amends to make. (Laughs) We’ll see what he’s up to.”

It will be interesting to see Douglas’ integration into the film that already has so many strong actors involved. Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps opens in theaters on April 23, 2010. I really wish they would cut the title down to simply, Money Never Sleeps. It could be similar to The Hustler and The Color of Money, same main character, similar story, but set in a different time.
