Voltron Concept Art – Transformers Meets Thundercats

There’s been talk of a live action Voltron movie ever since Transformers hit theaters back in 2007. It reinvigorated the franchise, broke a few box office records, and launched a couple careers (Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox), so it’s only natural that the folks behind Voltron would want to do the same. Over at JoBlo, they’ve posted some concept art that displays the new design of the heroes and surprisingly they don’t look bad. Take a look…

Atlas Entertainment is behind the Voltron revamp and they’ve hired screenwriters Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to pen the story for the film. The duo previously worked on the upcoming Conan reboot and they’re currently developing the Dr. Strange and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune adaptations.

After looking at these photos we can clearly see that they’re toning down the cornball factor and amping up the primal core of the characters. There’s always been a rivalry between Transformers and Voltron, but after Revenge of the Fallen, and our lack of interest in the upcoming sequel, Voltron might have a real shot.

Over the past week, several hilarious news pieces have surfaced online and we’re not just talking about Tom Cruise and his booty dance with JLo (although we’ve covered that thoroughly). We’re referring to the recent developments surrounding the old TV series Voltron, the questionable divinity of Betty White, and the cult world’s fascination with Ray Liotta. It’s all here…

With the unfortunate passing of Rue McClanahan last week, Betty White is now the sole survivor of the “Golden Girls” clan. Cue the inappropriate photoshopped artwork draped in Highlander references like, “There can only be one.” [Unreality Magazine]
There’s still plenty of leftover commentary on Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards regarding the host, Twilight, Sandra Bullock, and Christina Aguilera’s glowing vajayjay. [FunnyCrave]

UTA Picks Up Voltron

Since there have been so many Transformers announcements recently, it only make sense for Voltron to get in on some of that action. According to THR, the United Talent Agency has decided to take on Voltron and its U.S. rights-holder World Events Prods. as clients.

According to the trade, UTA plans on expanding on all the Voltron franchise possibilities, including a reboot of the animated TV show. High on the agency’s list of priorities is closing a deal on an animated cable series, which is expected to be imminent. Video game and toy deals also are on the docket. As for the feature film, UTA will help bring a writer on board to pen the script that’s currently being developed at Charles Roven’s Atlas Entertainment.

Even though the property will obviously get a marketing push from its Transformers similarities, UTA is pitching it as a human based robot alternative. “Unlike other toy brands, Voltron — in which five robot lions piloted by humans become a giant warrior — allows for human-centric stories.”

That used to be a valid difference between the two properties, but Transformers has become a lot more Sam and Mikaela-centric. The film doesn’t center on the robots as much as the senseless human characters that surround them. They may have to find another way to differentiate the two.

Voltron vs. Voltron?

Due to the immense success of Transformers, studio execs decided to fast track the production of a live action Voltron. It sounded like a great idea at first, but then the infighting began. According to THR, the Voltron property has gone through several hands over the years and a conflict of interest has reared its ugly head.

Several different companies own the rights to various Voltron properties. The producers who own the Voltron: Defender of the Universe film rights are suing Kickstart Prod. and the St. Louis-based company World Events, who own the rights to the American television series. Here’s where it gets messy, the film producers claim that World Events were actively seeking outside investors during a period when they had an “exclusive deal.”

“The plaintiffs are suing for breach of contract, fraud and interference with contractual relations, and are seeking various forms of damages.”

So far, no announcement has been made on whether or not this will effect the production of the film. At the moment Voltron is in development at Atlas Entertainment unharmed, but how long with that last? The movie hasn’t even hit theaters, and people are already going for broke.

Dark Knight Producer to Adapt Voltron

The adaptation of Voltron into a live action feature film has come back to haunt us. After the huge commercial (not critical) success of Transformers Revenge of the Fallen I’m not surprised. According to THR, producers Charles Roven (The Dark Knight), Richard Suckle (The International) and Steve Alexander have bought the rights to the Japanese robot-lion property. A live action film version of Voltron has been development for years, but it looks like it has once again become a hot commodity.

Voltron has been in development at New Regency, Relativity Media, and now Atlas Entertainment wants to try their hand at it. Atlas’ Charles Roven acquired the rights from the St. Louis based World Events Prods, who have held on to them for over two decades. Voltron isn’t set up at a studio yet, but Atlas does have an overall film deal with Warner Bros, so it may end up there. Sources are saying that the studio has been looking for a project large enough to rival Transformers over at Paramount.

Is it just me or is it the 1980′s all over again? Didn’t Transformers and Voltron have the same type of rivalry 25 years ago? It looks like this time they’re taking it from the TV, the comics, and toys to the theaters! Ted Loplar, one of the film’s producers said, “unlike other robotic action movies, ‘Voltron’ is the personification of the human spirit, a quality that will set this movie apart.” That sounded like a clear cut Transformers jab, because I know he wasn’t talking about Terminator.

Twilight updates for screenscrave fans!! Rotten Tomatoes has a lot of new juice from the sequel to the hit vampire love drama. They spoke with director Chris Weitz who spilled details from New Moon. Speaking of Twilight, apparently, Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, are going to be making the Twilight Zone movie. According to Variety, they hired Rand Ravich to right the script. More details available. (Variety)

Morgan Freeman is a busy man, not only does he have the Nelson Mendela biopic, Invictus, coming out this December but according to Variety, he is also in talks to star in Summit Entertainments thriller Red. More info in the full article. (Variety)

It was only a matter of time before companies started making money off of Michael Jackson’s last performance tapes. According to ComingSoon.net, Sony Pictures is in the works of buying over 80 hours of rehearsal footage filmed for Jackson’s concerts. More infor available on this film deal. (Comingsoon)
