In case you haven’t already run out to see Piranhna 3D or have recently thought about going to see it because you know there will be a sequel and you want to be able to say “no I saw this original, this is a masterpiece compared to that!” Or are just impressed to see Elizabeth Shue back on the big screen with no less than Ving Rhames, than FunnyOrDie has a little treat for you.

Whether or not you have seen the film, you don’t want to miss Shue handing Rhames his long over-do Oscar and then sucking face with him. Oh yeah. Check it out below…

The most anticipated B-movie of the summer is finally here! Piranha 3D, is what happens when you put Jaws, Joe Dante’s Piranha, and every semi-pornographic spring break film you can find into one movie. There are a lot of grotesque deaths, lots of unnecessary nudity, and plenty of corny dialogue that’s beyond ridiculous. In other words, it’s everything you’d expect. Check out our review…

The Plot:

Piranha 3D centers on a small town whose population multiples tenfold every year during the 4th of July weekend (thanks to rambunctious college kids). This year something big is going down and it has nothing to do with drugs or alcohol. The town is sitting on a crater that unleashes thousands of mutated and deadly piranhas whose sole purpose is to feed on every man, woman, and child treading the waters.

The Good:

The Humor: This movie doesn’t take itself seriously at all. The premise is pretty much a rip-off of Jaws, there’s plenty of nudity that serves no purpose (watch out for a special underwater scene with Kelly Brook), and several random cameos from actors who show up in scenes for no reason.
Steven R. McQueen: This young man was the only person putting in a real performance. It’s almost as if someone forgot to tell him that this was a satire. He was likable, funny, and easy to follow as the protagonist.
Christopher Lloyd: Emmett “Doc” Brown re-emerged in this film with Lloyd’s character Mr. Goodman, a crackpot who’s an expert on fish and other underwater creatures. He once again plays a scientist type who has all the answers but is slightly insane. It was great!

The Bad:

The Special Effects: The actual piranhas looked bad, and the killing sequences that featured them nipping away at people’s bodies looked even worse. It’s obvious that the majority of the budget didn’t go towards the CGI.
The Gore: This is a horror-thriller, so death scenes are expected but some of them were a bit unnerving. Mild Spoiler Alert: Faces get ripped off, bodies are taken a part (literally), and a certain male reproductive organ gets chewed up and spit out (right into the viewing audience’s face).
Where’s The Adam Scott We Know and Love?: Adam Scott has a supporting role as a scientist who’s more of a straight man than the comedic characters we’ve seen him play in the past. Why would he take on a role in a movie like this if he didn’t want to play it up? If you’re expecting him to delivery hilarity, it’s not going to happen.

Overall:

If you’re into satires and lots of nudity, you’ll love Piranha 3D. It’s definitely not family friendly and it lets you know that within the first 10 minutes. Be prepared.

Rating: 6/10

Ving Rhames Returning for Mission Impossible 4

Earlier today we reported on Tom Cruise’s impending pay-cut for Paramount’s upcoming Mission Impossible 4. That’s just one of many changes the studio plans on making with the follow up, but one thing that will remain the same is Ethan Hunt’s fashionable and tech-savvy sidekick Luther. Ving Rhames recently confirmed that he will return for the sequel when he appeared on the talk show “Lopez Tonight.” Watch his interview…

A couple of weeks ago when we spoke to MI:3 alum Maggie Q at the press junket for Priest, she stated that she wouldn’t be returning for the fourth film because the producers are bringing on an entirely new crew. Obviously she wasn’t referring to Luther, the oldie but goodie.

Here’s the video clip where Rhames discusses his return as well as a few other interesting tidbits about his character.

We’re not surprised that Rhames will be back for more spy-action because it’s hard to imagine Ethan without Luther. It wouldn’t be the same without his awesome clothes or his bad luck when it comes to exploding cars, trucks, and helicopters.

Surrogates: Movie Review

Ready for some fun sci-fi action with a good ol’ fashioned moral at the end? Check out Bruce Willis‘ new action-thriller by Jonathan Mostow, Surrogates. You’ve seen the sexy/creepy posters of the perfect beings taking off their clothing to reveal their inner robots, now it’s time to see what’s behind all the mystery.

The Players:

The Plot:

Set in present day, people have found a new way to live their lives to the fullest — with surrogate robots. The robots are a sexy, physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. Basically you’re you, only hotter and better at everything that you do. With everyone safe in their homes, free of pain, fear and consequences, the world is a utopia, that is until the first murder occurs and FBI agent Greer (Willis) will have to leave his surrogate behind and risk his life to unravel the mystery.

The Good:

The Idea Behind the Action: If people really had surrogates it would change the world as we know it, and the movie did attempt to take that all on board in an interesting way. Violence would change, health would change (although I only saw it going the one way- more on this later), war, infidelity (it wasn’t ME!) and more. For an action film, they took a number of these ideas to heart and did a decent job at presenting them in a fun way.
Old Fashioned Effects: A number of extras doing one thing in unison is more effective than someone flying through thin air. In a world where everything is CGI it’s nice to see a couple simple shots that still blow your hair back. Although there are a few scenes which were definitely shot on a green screen and a tennis ball, they used them spraingly and had enough story to keep you entertained and interested between action sequences.

The Bad:

The Sub-Plot: Without spoiling anything, Bruce Willis’ character is given a “dramatic sub-plot” which is completely unnecessary to the story and far to heavy handed to be enjoyed or believed. Which is made worse by…
The Score: Talk about trying to ham up the little stuff. Every time there’s an emotional plot point that they’re trying to hit you over the head with you’re bombarded with violins and over the top sympathetic music. A good score should but heard but not noticed, this was not that.
Their Health: Back to what I was saying before… Yes, by having a surrogate you would be less likely to catch a cold from someone sitting next to you, STDs wouldn’t be a problem, and day to day injuries would drop, but if all you did all day long was sit in a chair, your body would atrophy, depression would run rampant, and I’m sure our life lines would go down. Going to the gym, hiking, swimming is not just about being sexy, it’s also about well being and piece of mind. Pharmaceutical companies would have a field day if this were to ever happen and I would have loved to have seen them touch on that.
Wealth: How can everyone afford amazing apartments with nice cars and a surrogate system that I imagine is extremely expensive? Just because you have a pretty person running around as you doesn’t mean you have more money. Where was the wealth coming from?
The Surrogates Movement: They can fly through the air, jump from bus to bus, and crush you if necessary, but for some reason they don’t know how to dance. Well at least not all of them. Is the message supposed to be that dancing can only be done by a real human? If so, that’s fine, but I needed a line and someone to tell all the extras in the shot what the deal was, because half of them were dancing like robots and the other half like people.

Overall:

Although this is an action film, it does have a bit more to it. Is it a great film? No. Is it great for what it is? Yes. It’s got a touch of a cool idea mixed in with a bunch of pretty people running around while getting blown up. In fact, I think they could have dropped the whole sub-plot and just dealt a little bit more with the main plot, which was quite rich. And to wrap it all up, it does have a important albeit sappy moral at the end to boot.

The Tournament Movie Photos

Remember when we posted the international trailer for the upcoming assassin flick, The Tournament? The film is directed by Scott Mann and is a bonafide rip off of too many action films to mention. It stars Robert Carlyle, Kelly Hu, Ving Rhames, and Ian Somerhalder as a group of assassins caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse. The following photos show us that Somerhalder is a mediocre actor, gratuitous violence will never die, and Ving Rhames will continue to play the same character for the rest of his career.

I’m going to need Ian Somerhalder to turn it down a notch in this movie. I understand his character is supposed to be an over the top hick, but I don’t know if I can take it for an entire film. Hopefully he’ll die early (spoiler alert!) like he did on the first season of ABC’s Lost.

The more I see of Robert Carlyle’s “priest” character, the more suspicious I get. Something about him doesn’t sit right with me. After watching the trailer a few times, I’ve realized that he may not be as innocent as he looks. We’ll be able to find out the truth behind his collar when The Tournament hits theaters sometime in the uncertain future. The film has a 2009 release date set for the U.K., but not for the U.S. What’s up with that?!

What in the Smokin’ Aces hell is going on here? A trailer has been released for the upcoming action flick, The Tournament. If you’ve never heard of it, don’t feel bad, neither had I. The cast is filled with recognizable faces like Robert Carlyle, Ving Rhames, and Kelly Hu, yet this is my first time seeing or hearing anything about it. Find out more on The Tournament and see why it’s a rip off of every assassin movie produced in the past 10 years.

What ever happened to Ving Rhames in good acting roles? I miss his talent. I know he has it in him. The same goes for Ian Somerhalder. Is this what happens when you leave Lost? How many times have we seen the “dumb hick” assassin that always gets killed in the end? Isn’t his character a combination of Chris Pine and Kevin Durand in Smokin Aces? I’m happy to see Kelly Hu on the big screen again. She doesn’t get enough feature film work for my taste. I like seeing powerful women in strong roles that involve more than just being a pretty face.

Am I the only person who thinks this movie is a mix of Smokin Aces, Gamer, and The Condemned?

First Official Surrogates Trailer

The first trailer for the graphic novel adaptation Surrogates has been released. The film stars Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, and Radha Mitchell. The story focuses on a man as he investigates several mysterious deaths that he believes are connected to a government program. The program is extremely high tech and allows people to buy flawless surrogate (robot) versions of themselves. They vicariously live through them and have the ability to live out any and all their outlandish fantasies. This all sounds like a great idea until someone ends up dead and you can’t tell who’s who when trying to catch the culprit.

Creepy concept, but not as creepy as Ving Rhames and Bruce Willis’ wigs. Those things were very distracting. The film kind of reminds me of a sleeker Total Recall mixed with Demolition Man. The idea of having another version of yourself and living in a controlled, futuristic environment without crime. Surrogates will hit theaters this fall on September 25.
