New DVD Releases: Paul Blart, Valkyrie, True Blood

This week we have the year’s second surprise blockbuster (after last week’s Taken) when Paul Blart: Mall Cop hits shelves. We also get a bomb that wasn’t with another surprise hit in Tom Cruise’s Valkyrie.

Plus there’s “True Blood,” Land of the Lost movie cash and a brand new Steven Seagal movie in our section detailing the worst DVDs of the week…

Ah, Paul Blart. Silly little Paul Blart. You invaded our commercial breaks during every single NFL Playoff game, you gave us a great go-to bad movie for jokes, and you managed to outgross every single 2008 Best Picture nominee. You’re as lowbrow as lowbrow gets and as middle-of-the-road as a freeway barrier.

So why should we all love you? Because just like Taken you were a tremendous hit despite not being based on anything, a sequel to anything, or a remake of anything. It’s scary to type this, but we need more Paul Blarts.

So swallow your pride and buy the DVD.

What’s the perfect recipe for a bomb?

You take Tom Cruise, stick him in an eye patch during World War II in Germany and have him not do an accent. Make the movie right when the anti-Cruise sentiment is at its highest. Put Hitler in the film. Release the whole thing at Christmas. Seems like a surefire flop right?

Yet it didn’t happen. It actually broke even at the U.S. Box Office and made an additional $100MM plus overseas. This might have been the biggest pop culture upset of the year.

“True Blood” – Season One

In a few short weeks, “True Blood” once again rips through HBO with new episodes. If you’re a “Blood” virgin, you luckily have a chance to catch up with the DVDs.

The Case to Vote for It: It’s got the ridiculous tagline – “It was always about the money. . .Until somebody made it personal”. It also has the crazy plot – a group of women who want money decide to simply start drugging rich people and steal their money while they’re out. So this is pretty much run-of-the-mill awful, but there’s something about that DVD cover that just makes it seem even worse.

Driven to Kill

The Case to Vote for It: We’ve been listing awful DVDs for months and we’ve yet to list a single one starring Steven Seagal. How did this happen!? Worst of all, his latest movie has him playing a former Russian criminal who is now a crime novelist. That means we get Seagal doing an accent and pretending he knows how to write.

Amazing!

Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts

The Case to Vote for It: No summary of this movie exists anywhere. Anywhere. Not even on the IMDB page. So there’s no plot to make fun of. But it does star Judge Reinhold. And its DVD cover does feature what are ostensibly talking dogs. Plus, it’s the tried and true sequel that nobody asked for. A HSTDROTW candidate if there ever was one.

The remarkable yet seldom told true story of the German Resistance’s attempted coup and assassination of Adolf Hitler reveals itself when Valkyrie is released on Blu-ray Disc and Special Edition DVD with Digital Copy on May 19th from MGM Home Entertainment. Set in Nazi Germany, Valkyrie chronicles the daring and ingenious “July 20 plot” to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Oscar-nominee Tom Cruise* (Mission Impossible, Minority Report) stars as the loyal German nationalist Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the mastermind behind the plot to kill Hitler and overthrow his fascist regime. The film is directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects).

Charlize Theron might be teaming up with Tom Cruise for the Anthony Zimmer remake The Tourist directed by Bharat Nalluri. Apparently the script is simply getting another layer of polish by Valkyrie writer Christopher McQuarrie and shooting should start in March. [LatinoReview]
Bruckheimer talks Pirates, National Treasure, and more: “We’re doing another ‘National Treasure’ so we’re working on that, we’re preparing ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ right now… we have another picture that’s in post-production that we’re finishing called ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ with Isla Fischer and Hugh Dancy.” As for Pirates and National Treasure: “We’ve sat with the writers and we’re working up the story and plotlines right now. They’re in the process of finishing ‘The Lone Ranger’ so they’re working on both of those simultaneously.” [ComingSoon]

Jenna Fischer is starring in the new indie dramedy A Little Help, by first time film director Michael J. Weithorn (“King of Queens” creator). [Variety]
Smokin’ Aces prequel greenlit according to writer/director Joe Carnahan: He wrote on his official website: “Finally, some actual ‘Smokin Aces’ news. Universal has officially greenlit the prequel and we are underway. Cameos will abound. Trust me.” [ComingSoon]

The New Valkyrie trailer has just been released and the BEST part about it is…. EDDIE IZZARD! That’s right. He made it into the trailer… two times! As does Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Kenneth Branagh. But all those were expected. We get to watch Izzard scream into Tom Cruise’s face. HOW EXCITING! From Executive Transvestite to German officer! I just got even more excited about this film.

I mean honestly. Having Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Kenneth Branagh as your supporting cast is amazing. Then you have Cruise to lay down the stunts. And you top it off with Eddie Izzard! I’m there! And the story doesn’t look half bad either. German’s trying to kill Hitler during WWII (I think we know how it ends), what a great story to tell!

Synopsis: At the height of WW2, a group of high-ranking German officers hatched a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and seize power of the military command in order to end the war. The operation was codenamed “Valkyrie”, for the emergency plan that was meant to be used in case of a revolt against the Nazi government. This plan had been modified by the conspirators to ensure their success, but for various reasons the plot failed when finally carried out on 20 July 1944. The conspirators of the inner circle were shot after a kangaroo trial or sentenced to death soon after.

In theaters December 26th 2008.

Let’s face it. These films are both selling the same things. Big stars. Big directors. Nazi Germany. One is about Jews rebelling against the Nazis, the other is about a German rebelling against the Nazis. The two films come out within two weeks of one another. It’s obvious that these two films are competing for the same audience.
