After her directorial debut with Whip It in 2009, it was hard to tell if Drew Barrymore would continue to work behind the camera, or if the film was just a one-off. Some actors merely dabble. It’s official, people are so obsessed with “Valentine’s Day” that they’ll buy cheap chocolate for a loved one that’s marked up %600 and they’ll go and see ANY movie with the title just because… IT’S VALENTINE’S DAY!!! It’s great that people want a day to celebrate their love, all I ask is that you eat some quality candy and watch a good movie! There are plenty of heart wrenchingly amazing romantic films out there, go for a classic! And if you like the 10 stories at once style, you really can’t get better than Love Actually – it may have a Christmas theme, but it’s really the best of its genre.
Not surprisingly, all the last minute hype for The Wolfman couldn’t save it from itself. How much more obvious can you get than by having a movie called Valentine’s Day come out on Valentine’s weekend? The movie that stars every actor you can possibly think of, from A-list talents such as Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway to Grey Anatomy Dr’s Eric Dane and Patrick Dempsey to the two Jessica’s (Alba and Biel). The star power alone will make the movie number one this week; it doesn’t really matter what the storyline is. But the biggest star of the movie is the film’s director, Gary Marshall, the man can do no wrong.
If you are like me and avoiding anything lovey-dovey this weekend, you should check out Joe Johnston’s film, The Wolfman starring Anthony Hopkins, Benicio del Toro and Emily Blunt. This horror/thriller follows a man as he ends up hunting a werewolf while looking for his missing brother.
Although the selection this week is not big, the quality and diversity is good. Check out more info on the films coming out this week including reviews and showtimes after the jump…
