Oscar Winner 2010: Best Original Score – Up

The winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Original Score goes to Michael Giacchino for Up. In his acceptance speech he told a little story about the start of his career and how he never felt discouraged by family or friends. He talked about getting his first camera and shooting movies and how no one ever made him feel like it was a waste of his time. He decided to share the award with those supportive individuals.

Avatar: This film centers around Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) who wakes up in a VA hospital where he is surrounded by wounded war veterans. He then finds himself dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission where he is torn between doing what he is told protecting the world he feels is his home.The Sci-fi adventure also stars Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang.

Fantastic Mr. Fox: Wes Anderson‘s film, Fantastic Mr. Fox is the story of Mr. Fox (George Clooney) who has to put his wild way behind him and become responsible. This change comes as angry farmers, tired of sharing their chickens with a sly fox, look to get rid of their opponent and his family. Big names such as Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and Owen Wilson have their voices used for the film.

The Hurt Locker: Set in Iraq during war time, an elite Army bomb squad unit must come together in a city where everyone is a potential enemy and every object could be a deadly bomb. In this film, Kathryn Bigelow‘s gives audiences an intense portrayal of elite soldiers during the early months of the post-invasion period. Starring in the film are Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, and Ralph Fiennes.

Sherlock Holmes: Directed by Guy Rictchie, this is the tale that everyone knows. It is the story of Sherlock Holmes. Detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England. The film stars actors, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are in the film as is Rachel MaAdams.

Up: Tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen (Edward Asner) sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America in Pete Docter’s heartwarming film Up. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn’t alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip. Also includes the voices of Christopher Plummer and Jordan Nagai.

The winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature goes to Up. The film is also nominated for Best Motion Picture in the live action category, but it didn’t surprise anyone that it took top honors in the animated field. Pete Docter accepted the award for the film and thanked his cast, crew, and his family whom he called his “greatest adventure.”

Coraline: An adventurous 11 year old named Caroline Jones (Dakota Fanning) finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of the frustrating home filled with neglectful parents that she calls reality. She soon learns that her new world has sinister secrets in this Henry Selick’s animated family adventure. Teri Hatcher voices the mother in this new world.

The Princess and the Frog: Set in New Orleans, this romantic fairy tale, written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements is centered on a young girl named Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) and her fateful kiss with a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again. Also “starring” Bruno Campos, Keith David and even Oprah.

The Secret of Kells: To help complete the ancient magical book, a young Brendan Gleeson (Abbot Cellach) has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. Directed by Tomm Moore, this is the animated story of the boy behind the famed Book of Kells. Liam Hourican, Mick Lally and Michael McGrath also lend their voices for the film.

Pixar’s Up Hoping For a Best Picture Oscar

The Best Animated Feature Category is fairly new to the Academy Awards, being introduced only seven years ago back in 2002. Since the development of this distinction, the opportunity for animated films to be considered for the biggest award of the night (Best Picture), have become slim to none. According to Reuters, Pixar’s summer hit Up, may force the Academy to take a second look at their selection process.

For the 2010 Oscars, a dramatic change will take effect for the Best Picture Category. The nominees will expand from 5 to 10, giving more movies the opportunity to fight for the night’s top prize. Up was one of the best critically reviewed and commercially received films of the year, and with 5 extra slots open, it may find itself fighting against some live action fare.

The first and only time an animated film has been nominated for Best Picture was in 1991 for the Disney classic, Beauty and the Beast. Up is looking to follow in those history making steps to surpass the confines of the Animated Feature category. Up director Pete Docter, told Reuters that his film should be judged in the same way as any other, regardless if it’s live action or not.

“We happen to use computers to be telling the story, but it’s first and foremost about the storytelling, just like anything else.” he said. “For the world to look at it that way as well, that would be great.”

With there being so many Best Picture spots available for the taking this year, many are wondering if there will be enough high quality films available to fill the void. Only time will tell what will make it to the Oscar ballot.

New DVD Release: Up, The Ugly Truth, Sesame Street

Two major hits come out on DVD from two different ends of the spectrum. First, there’s the Pixar smash Up (maybe the best in that studio’s canon) and second there’s the crass bit of raunch The Ugly Truth. Meaning: There’s something for everybody!

Plus, there’s more kids classics in tow as “Seasame Street” celebrates its 40th anniversary with a retrospective set of the series’ best bits. All that, plus the three worst DVDs of the week!b Check it all out below…

FEATURE FILMS

Up

Here’s the truth about 3-D: It sucks. It’s terrible. It ruins movies and makes them worse.

That became true upon seeing Up. One of the best benefits to seeing a Pixar film (other than the always excellent stories and humor) is the vivid colors. The moving piece of digital art that shoots off the screen with an unmatched palette.

At least, it used to figuratively. Now it does literally, and you know what happens? The color suffers. The color doesn’t look nearly as vivid, the images not close to crystalline when viewed through the plastic shields of 3-D glasses.

This is supposed to not matter. Because the awe of 3-D is so overwhelming it wouldn’t matter if the movie was in Black and White. But that isn’t true. You get used to the 3-D by the time the second 3-D trailer has been aired, and by the time the feature starts, you just sort of expect it to be 3-D. It’s no longer a novelty or thrill, it just sort of is, and the gorgeous look of the film suffers for it.

So get this movie on DVD and be thankful you don’t have to suffer with the 3-D.

The Ugly Truth

Starring: Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler

This is what makes no sense about this sort of a romantic comedy – everybody who goes to see it knows precisely how it will end.

We know from the moment the trailer starts that Katherine Heigle and Gerard Butler will end up together. Despite their overwhelming differences and all logic saying that they won’t, everyone knows this is only way this film will end.

So why see it? Why go to a movie when you already know the ending? Isn’t the whole point of a movie to not know where it’s going? To be taken on a ride with an uncertain destination? Yet year after year people flock to movies where they already know the outcome.

So if you buy the DVD, pray it has an alternate ending Easter Egg.

Horrible Straight-To-DVD Release of the Week

The Accidental Husband

The Case to Vote for It: Okay, so there’s kind of a reason that this one went to DVD instead of coming out in theaters. It was supposed to come out, but suffered a pair of distributor bankruptcies that saw it holding its premiere at a Blockbuster. So maybe it’s a bit unfair to include the movie among the dregs of the film industry but it does have Uma Thurman, Colin Firth and Jeffrey Dean Morgan and nobody saw fit to try to put it out on the big screen.

It must be awful, correct?

American Virgin

The Case to Vote for It: Here is the plot of this movie: A girl who leads an abstinence group gets drunk one night at college and may or may not have had a little sex in her stupor. Unfortunately for her, denial isn’t an option as a sleazy filmmaker caught the whole thing on tape ‘Girls Gone Wild’-style. So now the girls in the group must go retrieve it. Kind of like Road Trip in that it’s almost a direct rip-off of that plot and probably sucks more. Oh, did I mention the sleazy videographer is played by Rob Schneider? Yikes.

The Christmas Clause

The Case to Vote for It: This week’s installment of the new category – “Terrible Christmas Movie Starring a D-Lister”. Last week it was Tom Arnold, this week it’s Lea Thompson as a busy lawyer whose family is draining her until she visits a mall Santa who grants her wish for a new life.

So it’s kind of like The Family Man in that it’s EXACTLY like the The Family Man.

2009 Hollywood Film Festival Line-Up

It’s time for the 13th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and an official press release was just sent out revealing the film roster for this year’s event. The programming includes features, documentaries, shorts and music videos from around the world, including films from Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Uganda, the United Kingdom and of course, the United States.

Take a look at this year’s films…

This year’s lineup includes The Assistants, a film by Steve Morris about Hollywood assistants trying to make their own movie, starring Joe Mantegna, Jane Seymour, Stacy Keach and Chris Conner; South Korea’s 2009 Academy Award Foreign Language submission Crossing, directed by Kim Tae-kyun and based on true accounts of North Korean defectors; Formosa Betrayed, a film by Adam Kane starring James Van Der Beek, Wendy Crewson, John Heard, Tzi Ma and Will Tiao, based on the murder of a professor at a small Midwestern college; Not Since You, directed by Jeff Stephenson, a romantic drama about a tight-knit group of college friends who graduated from NYU the year of 9/11 and reunite years later for a weekend wedding; and Last Day of Summer by Vlad Yudin and starring Nikki Reed, DJ Qualls and William Sadler, spotlighting a fast-food employee who has reached his breaking point from being harassed and tormented by his boss.

Documentaries include Garbage Dreams by Mai Iskander, a moving story of young Egyptian men searching for ways to eke out a living for their families and facing tough choices as they try to do the right thing for the planet; Neshoba, by Micki Dickoff and Tony Pagano, about a Mississippi town trying to come to terms with its violent racist past; No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo and Vilmos, by James Chressanthis, about the lives of renowned cinematographers Laszlo Kovacs and Vilmos Zsigmond from their escape from Hungary during the 1956 Soviet invasion to the present; and War Dance Returns, by Sean Fine, about the return to Uganda to screen the 2008 film “War Dance” for the members of Patongo, the community documented in the film.

The screenings will take place from October 23rd – 25th at the Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood, and will open with the feature Another Harvest Moon, a sensitive drama about four elderly Americans, directed by Greg W. Swartz.

Also, the festival has announced the nominees for this year’s Hollywood Movie Awards. They include:

Kathryn Bigelow to be Honored at The Hollywood Awards

Let the award season begin! The 13th annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood awards have announced that Director Kathryn Bigelow will be honored with the “Hollywood Director Award”, Screenwriter Nora Ephron will be presented with the “Hollywood Screenwriter Award”, Disney/Pixar’s UP will get the “Hollywood Animation Award” and Scott Farrar, visual effects supervisor for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will receive the “Hollywood Visual Effects Award” at the festivals Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony.

The ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on October 26, 2009.

The Announcement was made by Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival. “It is a great pleasure to recognize the extraordinary talent of Kathryn Bigelow, Nora Ephron, Peter Docter and Scott Farrar,” said Mr. de Abreu, “and to honor their achievements and contributions to filmmaking.”

Kathryn Bigelow recently directed The Hurt Locker, a film that received great acclaim. Bigelow’s remarkable work has alternated between edgy and art-house fare (The Loveless, Near Dark, The Weight of Water) and Hollywood products (Point Break, Strange Days, K-19: The Widowmaker) throughout a highly regarded career spanning more than 25 years.

Nora Ephron is an academy award nominated screen writer, her credits include films Heartburn, Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail and Bewitched.

Peter Docter is the director and writer of The Walt Disney Studios’/Pixar Animation Studios’ animated feature UP. Docter made his debut as a director on Monsters, Inc. for which he received an Academy Award nomination. He earned another for his original story credit on the Oscar-winning WALL-E.

Scott Farrar has been a part of the special effects super champs, Industrial Light & Magic since 1981 as a camera operator on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and was promoted to visual effects supervisor on Who Framed Roger Rabbit. In 1985, he received an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on Cocoon. Since then he has received Oscar nominations for The Chronicles of Narnia, Backdraft, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence and Transformers.

Weekend Box Office: The Hangover or Up?

Depending on who you ask, we have two different films taking the number one spot. According to BoxOfficeMojo Up is this weekends box office winner, but according to Variety, The Hangover managed to sneak past Up by a mere $500,000. Either way, this weeks numbers show that word of mouth will be keeping Up in the theaters for a while, that all you sickos out there heard about Zach Galifianakis‘ antics and had to see the movie this Sunday, and that not many of your care about Will Ferrell being in a Land of the Lost remake, in fact you prefer him on “Men Vs. Wild.”

Box Office Predictions: The Hangover Vs. Land of the Lost

It seems like things will be looking more or less the same this weekend in the box office. There is a chance that Pixar’s Up might be holding unto the number one spot for a second a week. Assuming that’s true, this weekend The Hangover and Land of the Lost are going to be battling it out at the box office to be second best. Who will take home the silver medal?

The Hangover is a comedy about a guy named Doug and his three groomsmen who head to Las Vegas for a bachelor party they will never forget—or remember. And to keep the adventure/comedy streak running, Land of the Lost is about a space-time vortex sucking in a has-been scientist (Will Ferrell) back to the land before time.

So what will it be, a crazy night with the guys or a wacky night through time?

In 2003, Todd Phillips Old School ranked at number two on opening weekend (surprise, surprise) making $17,453,216, and went on to gross $87,055,349 worldwide. Old School is similar to The Hangover, and will probably attract the same rowdy college kids as well as an older audience, but the trio-cast in The Hangover is no-where near as popular as the trio in Old School, even if it was 2003. But if the cast doesn’t persuade people to watch the film, perhaps all the glowing reviews and word of mouth will.

As for our comedy-man, Will Ferrel, his last film Step Brothers opened at $30,940,732 and went on to gross $128,107,564 worldwide. Brad Silberling‘s Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, starring Jim Carrie, (and one of my personal favorite films), topped the charts opening at $30,061,756 and went on to gross $209,073,645 worldwide. Although I doubt Land of the Lost is anything like A Series of Unfortunate Events (cast included Meryl Streep), it may still be able to pull in audiences who are reminiscent of the TV show as well as those who will pay to see Ferrell and McBride watch paint dry (which I think might be kind of fun).

Both films are comedies and include adventure in their own way, but The Hangover might reach a broader audience, and it looks like a great laugh. Although Ferrell’s comedies have ranked rather high in the past, this weekend, it seems like the silver medal will be handed to The Hangover.

Hidden Messages Inside Pixar’s Up

This weekend was dominated by the Pixar animated film, Up. It debuted at number one in theaters beating out Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell, and knocked last week’s champ Night at the Museum 2 down a peg. It turns out that Pixar’s not only good at creating quality family films, they also have a knack for hiding things in plain site. Over at /Film, Peter Sciretta did an amazing job of finding several hidden easter eggs featured in the film. They pay homage to past and future Pixar projects, and you’d be surprised as to what was found.

Here are a few highlights from the post, to see more you can always hop on over to their website.

The letter and number combo A113 makes an appearance in every Pixar film as well as the popular animated series The Simpsons, and Family Guy. It makes reference to the room number for a CalArts animation class that several alumni and Pixar contributers attended, whom include John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter.

Another tidbit caught was the appearance of the infamous Pizza Planet truck. It has made a cameo in several of Pixar’s earlier films, and can be seen in almost every movie the company has produced.

The Pizza Planet truck appears twice in Up, once when Carl’s house lifts off the ground, and then again at the end of the film.

These are just a couple of the MANY hidden items you can find in the movie. It’s easy to miss them at first glance, so the fact that Pixar takes the time to incorporate them into every film is insane. It really makes you want to go back and do a double take at other Disney and Pixar films to see what else you can find.

Weekend Box Office: Up Gets What it Deserves…

…a lot of money! Finally I agree with moviegoers. Although nearly every single film critic agreed that Up is an amazing, must see film, no one ever knows what the people will decide to buy a ticket to. This weekend, greatness prevailed, and Up took in almost $70 million and nearly bumped Obsessed off the list!

Another welcome surprise was the success of Sam Raimi‘s independent horror film Drag Me to Hell which managed to beat out Terminator!

It is a slow week for movie go-er’s who have been spoiled with big blockbusters coming out every week (Terminator Salvation, Angels and Demons, Star Trek, etc). Nevertheless, taking quality over quantity, this week still delivers. Pete Docter‘s Up is a must see for anyone with a heart and a passion for an amazing visual experience. Another movie that has been receiving a lot of hype is Sam Raimi‘s old fashioned horror flick Drag me to Hell. Trust me, this film will not disappoint. And if you are looking for something different, you can turn to Academy Award winner for best foreign language film, Departures.
