Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is an odd title for a film that gives you nothing but good reason to be afraid of the dark, but I guess that’s all part of the fun of it! There is a lot about this film that makes it a cliched horror film, the only difference is that there are some impressive A-list actors, interesting new monsters and a splash of Guillermo del Toro (interview) from time to time. The problem is, that this film asks you to suspend your beliefs in the wrong ways. Believing that monsters exists in basement and are after your teeth — awesome! Buying that human beings act the way they do in this move — failed movie magic. There were a lot of good things about this movie, but it loses its way about halfway in, making it a horror film that will likely not be remember. Find out why…

Guillermo del Toro came out of hiding from those angry Hobbit fans to support Troy Nixey, the director of his upcoming feature, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. Del Toro went back to his horror roots and wrote and produced the film. He was on hand at the Comic-Con press conference to discuss his remake of the 1973 made for TV movie of the same name.
The film’s about a girl who moves in with her dad and his girlfriend, only to discover that they’re sharing their home with some “devilish creatures.” It’s no surprise that while the the topic of fear was at hand and del Toro, being the amazing storyteller that he is, had a rather humorous tale to tell about his own fears and how he’s faced them.

Writer Guillermo Del Toro and Director Troy Nixey came out to talk about their upcoming remake of the 1970s made for TV film, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. Del Toro is the most enthusiastic and well versed director in the horror genre, and a champion of new filmmakers with vision. While you were out getting your laugh on at theaters watching Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, here’s is what else was going on this weekend in the movie world:
- It has been 15 years since the movie True Lies came out and now the film’s three stars, including the two Arnolds (Tom Arnold and Mr. Schwarzenegger), and director James Cameron are coming together for a new project, possibly a sequel. - Steven Spielberg is set to direct a contemporary adaptation of Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize winning play “Harvey.” Harvey is the story of an amiable eccentric, Elwood P. Dowd, and his friendship with a six and a half feet tall invisible rabbit. The story shows how their friendship effects every member of his family and his community. - Troy Nixey‘s set to direct a new film called Simple Machines. It’s a family fantasy, with a story that centers on a reclusive young inventor who must save his beloved creation from an evil industrialist before he uses it to corrupt the world. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen actress Katie Holmes in a big budget or just decent film. Her last movie was the 2008 unseen comedy Mad Money, which came and went and up until recently she’s been missing in action. The actress is taking a darker turn in the new film entitled Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. According to Variety, the feature has been written by Guillermo del Toro for Miramax Films and will be directed by his protege Troy Nixey.
