Many thought Little Fockers (movie review) would be a huge mistake, and that it may have been for the critics but not the piggy bank. The third movie in the Meet the Parents franchise brought in over $34 million this Christmas weekend. The Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro movie was followed by the new Coen’s western True Grit (movie review). Unfortunately Tron Legacy wasn’t intriguing enough to keep up it’s number one spot even before it made back half its money, people must be a bit disappointed.

Twenty years later, the world gets Tron: Legacy (read review). The much anticipated film opened this weekend and it topped the box office charts with $43.6 million. The Warner Bros. animated film Yogi Bear (read review) came in at No. 2, but didn’t make anything close to the Sci-fi film which stars Jeff Bridges, Garret Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde.

Today Tron Legacy finally debuts in theaters after 3 years of heavy campaigning from Disney Studios. The follow up to their 1982 feature Tron is expected to introduce a new generation to the mythology surrounding Kevin Flynn and his son Sam. According to Deadline, the movie is off to a good start by earning $3.5 million at midnight screenings on Thursday night.

Disney has spent a ridiculous amount of money promoting their upcoming 3D flick, Tron Legacy. The film has been at San Diego Comic-Con three years in a row, and billboards started popping up this summer even though the movie doesn’t open until mid-December. Add an over the top viral campaign and multiple preview screenings and you’ve got one of the most expensive marketing campaigns ever. Unfortunately, that still might not be enough according to some box office tracking reports.
