Last week, Michael Bay informed the world that he would be returning to helm the third installment of the Transformers franchise. The film is scheduled for a July 2011 release, and will feature the return of Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox in their respective roles. As for who won’t be returning, co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci have opted against writing duties for the third film.

The first sign of the apocalypse has been revealed with Michael Bay’s announcement that Transformers 3 has begun pre-production. It took a long time for me to get the disturbing taste of Revenge of the Fallen out of my mouth, and now I have to brace myself for its follow up. Over at Bay’s official website, he gave an update of the sequel’s story and the film’s ever pending release date.

Let the award season begin! The 13th annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood awards have announced that Director Kathryn Bigelow will be honored with the “Hollywood Director Award”, Screenwriter Nora Ephron will be presented with the “Hollywood Screenwriter Award”, Disney/Pixar’s UP will get the “Hollywood Animation Award” and Scott Farrar, visual effects supervisor for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will receive the “Hollywood Visual Effects Award” at the festivals Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony.

If you’re like me, the utter idea of watching Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen again makes your stomach turn. The sequel to the 2007 Hasbro hit was a critical dud, but a commercial success at this summer’s box office. Mostly, stemming from the built in audience of it’s predecessor. GI Joe: Rise of Cobra hits theaters today and there is a lot of pressure for the film to deliver. It’s following in the footsteps of fellow Hasbro and Paramount champion Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. A lot of people have been making unfair comparisons between the two films due to their similar roots. They both have action figures, animated series, comic books, and now live action features to their credit. The adaptation of Voltron into a live action feature film has come back to haunt us. After the huge commercial (not critical) success of Transformers Revenge of the Fallen I’m not surprised. According to THR, producers Charles Roven (The Dark Knight), Richard Suckle (The International) and Steve Alexander have bought the rights to the Japanese robot-lion property. A live action film version of Voltron has been development for years, but it looks like it has once again become a hot commodity.

There is no doubt that the Harry Potter franchise has been very successful at the box office. Even when first Harry Potter was debuted in 2001, it was able to pull in more than $300 million. This year, the latest Harry Potter film Half-Blood Prince is expected to do better.
According to Variety, midnight screenings for the Half Blood Prince reached new heights. That’s right, the wizards beat-out Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and The Dark Knight (the previous record holder) for the top grossing midnight screenings of all time – earning $22.2 million.
