When the NBC Thursday night line up returns from its holiday hiatus you might notice something different about “30 Rock.” One of the core cast members will be M.I.A. According to EW, Tracy Morgan aka Tracy Jordan will opt out of at least two episodes next year because of a medical emergency that had to be taken care of.
The recently missing in action ”TGS” writing staff is back this week on “30 Rock,” and they provide the laughs you’ve come to expect. A little role reversal occurs as well when Liz feels accepted for once and Jack finally questions his importance at GE. Also, the episode ends with Pete wearing a Mexican poncho and playing Jethro Tull’s Aqualung on acoustic guitar. The episode may have been worth it just for that. “30 Rock” is successful because it mixes clever writing with a larger than life portrayal of our own society. A lot of the time, it’s funny because it is is frighteningly familiar to us. Last night’s was an episode that showcased this particular quality, with a political candidate who is only slightly nuttier than some of the ones we’ve seen lately and a subplot involving Tracy that anyone who paid attention to last year’s Oscar race will recognize.

The beautiful Elizabeth Banks is back this week, and even if her role is minimal, there were plenty of reasons to watch last night’s episode of “30 Rock.” This has always been a show that relies just as much on its good writing as it does its stars – both of which did a phenomenal job this week at bringing the two together and keeping the laughs coming. “30 Rock“ is at its best when it is less focused on Liz or Jack’s relationship struggles and more focused on making audiences laugh. Last night was a great example of this, with funny guest stars and a consistently clever script.
