For those hoping for scoops, D23 has not offered that much new information. The big news of the day was that The Muppets will have a Toy Story short in front of it. That short is called “Small Fry” and will feature the voice of Jane Lynch. The day was mostly mellow in terms of big guns (which should be unleashed tomorrow), as it was meant more for the fanatics, who wanted to buy as many of the collectables as they could. But there were some neat costume displays in the upstairs showrooms, and one was dedicated to costumes from Disney films and TV shows. Here’s a look at some of the retro outfits and props.

For those in Los Angeles, these resemble the costume displays at the Arclight, which is why the retro titles have the most appeal – and they’re also often the weirdest. It’s hard to get excited about Nicholas Cage‘s costume in National Treasure (a shirt and pants), but the Tron stuff is rather funky and fascinating. There was also a lot of Rocketeer costumes, and the shops had a number of Rocketeer shirts. Perhaps the tide is turning on that film’s reputation.

It was also great to see stuff from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Check it out:

Studios can promise you the end of a franchise, but when a a film makes more than $1.6 billion, they’re going to rethink it. Tom Hanks, the voice of the Toy Story‘s beloved Woody, just told the BBC that Toy Story 4 is happening. During the premiere of his newest movie Larry Crowne, Hanks also told “Showbiz Tonight” that he believes another Woody and Buzz Lightyear movie is underway (via The Marquee Blog).

“I understand it’s happening and if it is, I hope they’ll hire me. They have almost every line I’ve ever said in the hard drive up there at Pixar. So they might not need me! I hope they’ll have some unique grunts they’re going to need from me so I can get in there and do it.”

The Toy Story franchise is one of the most successful franchises out there, both critically and financially. In 1995, Toy Story made $300 million. 1999′s sequel was followed with more success, grossing $495 million, and then in 2010 Toy Story 3 was the highest grossing film of the year. Also, let’s add that the latter won the Oscar for best Animated feature.

While Hanks can think there’s another Toy Story in the works, Pixar has the final say. Director Lee Unkrich told CNN that there would be no more sequels. More than once, he’s compared the last scene where Andy is driving away and looking back, to his own experience when his grandmother died. That’s closure. Why mess with something so great? Oh, that’s right, money.

What do you think? Do you want a Toy Story 4?

Do you remember those rumors we heard about a possible Toy Story short being attached to this year’s Cars 2? Well, those rumors are true, because Disney-Pixar have released the first official teaser for Toy Story Hawaiian Vacation. Are you ready to see the gang again? They’re loud, proud, and after their Oscar winning weekend, ready to relax. Check out the clip…

No official plot synopsis has been released for the feature so we have no idea what it entails. Thus far, the only information we’ve acquired comes from director Gary Rydstrom who spoke about the short in an interview with EW recently. He said,

“We wanted to figure out a story that would include everybody, which is crazy because it is under six minutes. It takes place in Bonnie’s room — Woody, Buzz and Rex and everybody is in on it. Ken wants to take Barbie on a perfect vacation to Hawaii by stowing away in Bonnie’s backpack, but they get left behind in the middle of winter while she goes off without them.”

We guess this is what he was talking about:

Poor Ken. He’s such a disillusioned character. He really doesn’t know when he’s coming or going sometimes. It’s nice to hear all the familiar voices in this clip. Considering the six minute time span, we’re interested in knowing how the director plans on incorporating so many characters into the story.

Hawaiian Vacation will play in front of Cars 2 and another new short will be attached to The Muppets later this year.

As expected, Toy Story 3 walked away with the award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 68th Annual Golden Globes. Sunday evening the honor was accepted by director Lee Unkrich, who made a crack to presenters Justin Bieber and Hailee Steinfeld about them not being born when the first Toy Story came out. This film is pretty much a shoe in to win in the same category at the Oscars.

See who Toy Story 3 beat out…

Best Animated Film
Despicable Me
How to Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Toy Story 3 – Winner

Toy Story 3 also won this honor at this year’s Critics Choice Awards, which were held on Friday in Los Angeles. Unkrich accepted the award, and gave a special thanks to the cast of the film, which he says was anchored by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.

Toy Story 3 has turned into a box office juggernaut. Not only is it the highest grossing Pixar film ever produced, it’s the highest grossing animated film of all time. Now the studio has announced that Toy Story 3 will cross the billion dollar mark by the end of today making it the second Disney film to do so this year (following Alice in Wonderland).

According to the press release, Disney is the only studio to have two films gross a billion dollars in the same calendar year. Their first film to achieve such a feat was 2006′s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which along with Alice is another Johnny Depp film.

Check out the accolades:

As of Thursday (8/26/10), Toy Story 3 tallied more than $592.9 million internationally, Disney’s largest international animated release.

Latin American audiences have contributed $138 million making Toy Story 3 the highest grossing Disney film ever released in the region.

Toy Story 3 is the most successful UK release in Disney history and currently stands as the fourth biggest title in territory history with $102.4 million in box office receipts so far.

In Japan, the film has taken in $111.2 million and spent five consecutive weeks as the #1 movie.

Toy Story 3 currently ranks as the #7 film in global box office history and domestically ranks #9 with $404.6 million in receipts to date.

Disney is the parent company but Pixar did all the hard stuff. Their blood sweat and tears are sprinkled all over the Toy Story franchise and they deserve a pat on the back for their work.

Are you shocked that Toy Story 3 made a billion dollars? Have you seen the film?

According to EW, Buzz and Woody had to take it a step further beyond their studio. Toy Story 3 has annihilated the record books and moved on to world domination. It’s now been named the highest grossing animated film of all time — period!

Toy Story 3 has earned a record breaking $920 million in worldwide box office receipts surpassing the previous animated champ, Shrek 2 from 2004 ($919 million). The film is expected to surpass the $400 million domestic mark this weekend, which will make it the second Disney film to do so. Internally, Toy Story 3 may have the top spot when it comes to Pixar but for their parent company (Disney) it’s only the fourth-most successful film in their history (including live action movies).

In a statement released earlier today, Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, said:

“In 1995, the talented team at Pixar introduced a cowboy, a space ranger and their friends who have gone on to become some of the most beloved characters in the world. The success of Toy Story is due to the tremendously creative and innovative team at Pixar, led by John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, and our incredible marketing and distribution teams around the world. In Toy Story 3, director Lee Unkrich, producer Darla Anderson and the incredible team at Pixar have given audiences a film that continued the rich storytelling and character building that have become synonymous with every Pixar release.”

Due to the positive critical response and the increase in ticket sales (including 3D spikes), I’m not surprised that the movie has found itself on top of the animation heap. It might be a while before we see another movie that has enough appeal to kick it down a notch. Look what happened with Shrek 2? Six years went by before another film came along that was good enough to take its spot and Toy Story 3 might hold on to it even longer.

What do you think of Toy Story 3 being named the highest grossing animated film of all time? Is it well deserved?

It’s true. Most sequels suck. A great franchise is a rare breed. Lucky for us that doesn’t apply to Pixar! Not yet anyway. Toy Story 3 is hitting theaters and if you’re a true Woody/Buzz Lightyear fan (like many have been since 1995), you might have found yourself snooping around for some early buzz on Pixar’s first franchise.

This time around, the playground days are over for Andy. As he packs up for college, Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang are headed to the day-care center, or “prison,” as director Lee Unkrich compared it to in an interview. With just the plot in mind, Toy Story sounds more like a toy nightmare, and there’s nothing wrong with that, as long as it’s one hell of a nightmare.

In a recent interview with Unkrick, he told us a little more about the tone of the film…

Unkrick: I don’t think of it as a dark film, I think of it as a well rounded film that has a lot of experiences for the audience in it. There are some moments of emotional intensity in the film, but in my mind we where trying to be truthful to these characters and the journey that they were on.

Voice actress Jodi Benson, Barbie, found herself a lot more emotional in the last film than in the previous two…

Benson: I could relate to it as a parent, and I was relating to it as a grown adult. I had a lot more going emotionally and I really cried at the end. I didn’t in one or two.”

Now, before you even start to get a déjà-vu of what happened when Where the Wild Things Are (many put the film away as being too dark for children) hit theaters last year, let’s recall the previous two films which dealt with quite a bit of “mature” concepts for children and adults. Not that the characters are older it’s only natural that their situations reflect their circumstances.

During the interview, Unkrick reminds us that the best movies make us feel something, whether it’s joy or fear. As ScreenCrave mentioned in its review for the film…

“In the other movies, you knew everyone would be back in the comfort of Andy’s room after their adventure. From the very beginning of this movie, there is this foreboding feeling and you realize that you don’t know how it’s going to end. Pixar has proven that they know how to tackle the themes of growing up and death quite well. Toy Story 3 is definitely no exception.”

There’s no doubt, this film is different and although it’s “safe” for kids, it’s not a safe film by any means. Another risk the film-makers took was making this film into IMAX 3D and converting the first two. Stereoscopic supervisor, Bob Whitehill, or as he calls himself, “the 3D guy,” was very careful with the whole 3D process:

Whitehill: We worked really hard to not interfere with the movie, to make it a really comfortable experience for our viewers. [The creators] did such an amazing job at creating this great movie that the last thing we want to do in 3D is put a layer on top of that… We concentrated in making it comfortable. We wanted people to feel rewarded by that experience.

It’s been said before, but it does seem like just yesterday when we saw Woody and Buzz Lightyear meet in Andy’s room. Many are wondering if this be the last Toy Story? Jeff Garlin doesn’t seem to think so…

Garlin: [Toy Story 3] is fantastic and moving and great. This is not going to be it. It will come at some point. maybe.”

Listen to the full roundtable interview with the films director Lee Unkrich and and producer Darla K. Anderson below…

For those of you who have seen Toy Story 3, what did you think about the film?

This weekend, the final installment in Pixar’s Toy Story series debuts in theaters but don’t be too sad, it’s not the last time you’ll see Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang. According to MSN, Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich revealed that he’s planning a big follow up that will be attached to the studio’s next animation, Cars 2.

Cars 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on June 24, 2011 in 2D and 3D, and its debut will mark the return of the Toy Story characters.

“…we know that people love the characters, love Woody and Buzz, and would hate to say good-bye to them completely,” Unkrich said. “I don’t know that there would ever be a ‘[Toy Story] 4.’ We don’t have any plans for one — but we are trying to find ways to keep the characters alive. We have announced we’re going to do a short film in front of Cars 2 that uses the ‘Toy Story’ characters. We’re going to keep them alive; they’re not going away forever.”

If you’re one of those people drowning in your tears after the credits roll on Toy Story 3, cheer up! The gang will be back in short form next summer. As for the Toy Story 4 speculation, don’t do it! They need to let this series go out in a blaze of glory on a critical and commercial high. Give it a proper burial and move on.

What do you think of a Toy Story short being attached to Cars 2? Do you think more attention will be put on the short as opposed to the movie?

There are many of us who feel like they’ve grown up with the toys of Toy Story 3. It’s almost as if they’ve been our toys as much as Andy’s. Woody and the gang are back for the third (and final?) installment of the series that skyrocketed Pixar to the top 15 years ago in 1995. Holy crap… I’m old. So, has Pixar done it yet again? Or is the franchise getting moldy and stale (just like me)? Let’s lay it all out, shall we?

The Players:

Director: Lee Unkrich

Writers: Michael Arndt, John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Lee Unkrich

Cast: Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear), Joan Cusack (Jessie), Ned Beatty (Lotso), Don Rickles (Mr. Potato Head), Michael Keaton (Ken)

The Good:

Pixar Does It Again: “How do they do it?” is the only thing that comes to mind? Time and time again they prove that they are the titans of storytelling and refuse to put out something sub-par into the world. Every little detail is there. When a scene is funny, they ask how they can make it funnier. If a scene is heartfelt, they won’t stop until you’re sobbing. The third time around with the same set of characters and they hit it out of the ballpark. Name another franchise that can make three films of a series as close to perfect as possible? We’re waiting!

Comedy: It is back in full force. Little Miss Sunshine scribe Michael Arndt is a perfect fit at Pixar. He had perfect timing and incredible imagination to make us laugh as we remember our own childhood toys. Nothing feels gimmicky or forced. Everything flows naturally, which is surprising after coming back to these characters for the third time. You would think they would be running out of the “toy jokes”. Nope.

El Buzzo/Mr. Tortilla Head: You’ll know it when you see it. And you’ll love it.

New Toys: How do you keep a franchise fresh? Introduce new characters, of course! There is the Pixar way, and then there is the Michael Bay way. I think it’s safe to say Pixar wins. Sorry kids, no racist toys. Pixar took a risk in adding quite a plethora of new characters to this one. The best part is that none of them felt contrived or unwelcome; they all had their part to the story… even if it was just for one laugh. The most memorable ones (and scene stealers) were Ken and Barbie, Chuckles, and Mr. Pricklepants.

The Scope: Holy crap did this feel big. The world just felt very thought out and large with all of the locations introduced.

The (Not Really Bad) Bad:

No One Believes Woody (again): It seems like in all three movies, the one thing that gets everyone in a big mess is the rest of the toys not believing what Woody says. The act of everyone not listening felt a bit repetitive in the moment, but once it passed, you’ve moved on and it’s really not enough to bring you down. You want to see how they’re getting out of this one… again.

Missing Old Characters: I did miss seeing some of Andy’s background toys from the first couple of films. But it made sense for them to not be around as Andy is about to head to college. No one keeps all their old toys… just the important ones. It made complete sense for the story and they had to do it. They were still missed (although, he new ones made up for their lack of presence).

Lots-o-Huggin’ Bear: Definitely a formidable and evil villain. He just reminds me a lot of the Old Proctor from the last movie. Again: It’s not bad, just a bit too familiar.

The Good/Bad:

The Darkness: Not sure if this is necessarily “bad”, but the film is very heavy. I personally enjoyed this darker tone, but some may have it rub them the wrong way. Pixar knows how to get inside of your body and turn on the tear valve. It seems like the only accurate words to describe the feeling that this film is that it didn’t feel “safe.” In the other movies, you knew everyone would be back in the comfort of Andy’s room after their adventure. From the very beginning of this movie, there is this foreboding feeling and you realize that you don’t know how it’s going to end. Pixar has proven that they know how to tackle the themes of growing up and death quite well. Toy Story 3 is definitely no exception.

Overall:

They did it again. The third movie definitely feels a lot different than the first two. It is darker, larger, and plays with heavier themes. You don’t have that worthless laughter you had with the others. Pixar really puts you on the edge of your seat here, and you will truly care about what will become of Andy’s (and our) favorite set of toys when he goes off to college. Again, the mixture of laughter and tears is in full effect. If you don’t have a tear or two rolling down your cheek in the last 30 minutes, then you’re probably a heartless Decepticon.

Rating: 9.5/10 (because nobody’s perfect)

Toy Story 3 hits theaters on June 18th!

Before having his manhood taken by Barbie, Ken was known for being a lion with the ladies. In the latest promo clip for the movie he gives some much needed dating advice in a segment called, ” Ken’s Dating Tips For Today’s Bachelor.” Check out tip number 24…

Ken is so vapid and full of himself but everything he said in this video is true. Sure, it’s a bit over the top but overall he’s right. Taking care of yourself is the first step to having a successful relationship. It’s just hard to accept words of advice from someone whose hair doesn’t move.

The premise of Toy Story 3 surrounds Andy’s move to college and the toys needing to find a new home. Andy’s mother wants to put Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the gang out to pasture but somehow they end up at a daycare center. The joyous event soon turns sour when they realize that toddler’s aren’t that gentle or clean. From that point on, they devise a plan to break out of the daycare by any means necessary.

Toy Story 3 hits theaters on June 18, 2010.

What do you think of Ken’s dating tip? Do you agree with what he said?
