A pretty solid week on DVD as nearly half-a-dozen honest-to-goodness features are immortalized in shiny-disced brilliance including, by my math, the first 2010 wide releases to appear on DVD! Congratulations, Leap Year and Tooth Fairy, the dubious honor is yours!

The rest of the releases are led by Nine, that movie that you heard a lot about last year until it actually came out and then seemed non-existent as well as Tetro, Francis Ford Coppola’s new film that you meant to see.

Check it out below…

FEATURE FILMS

Nine

“The musical is back!”

Remember when Hugh Jackman wasted 9 minutes of the Oscars in 2009 with a flat musical number that proclaimed exactly that? Kind of remains to be seen, no?

Nine is another one of those “Garbage Can Films” – where a massive Oscar Campaign is at the ready, yet it all gets tossed once the movie fails with both critics and audiences alike.

But this one had more riding on it than one Oscar campaign. Nine was the torchbearer for the entire musical genre – a film that was set to reignite the fire that’d been smoldering since Mamma Mia! swept up audiences a couple summers ago.

Instead, it fell flat. Dreadfully flat. Flat to the point that the musical genre has been resuscitated on. . .TV.

That’s right! The musical is back in the form of great shows like “Glee” and “Treme“. So, once again, TV outdoes film. It’s an under reported story over the last ten years: TV beats film in just about every way it can. Now, the musical is on that list as well.

But if you prefer the features, you can buy this musical on DVD.

Leap Year

“I just know that there are a lot of people who will say it is the worst film of 2010.”

This isn’t my review, or my opinion. I didn’t even see this movie. You know who spoke that quote? Matthew Goode. The co-star of this film.

Not only did he give us that gem, he also went on to describe the movie as “turgid” and mentioned that he only did the movie because it filmed close to his home.

So, I suppose, in essence he sort of submarined the movie. But I see it completely differently. It would be amazing if Leap Year, rather than distancing itself from these comments, fully embraced them.

Imagine seeing that quote from Matthew Goode on the DVD Box. Then, you see it paired with a dozen bad reviews on the back. You’re in the store thinking, “Wow, not only did critics hate this movie, but the co-star thought it was terrible. I kinda have to see this.”

So rather than hoping that your rom-com catnip is alluring enough to make your DVD stand out from the pack, suddenly everyone who walks into Blockbuster see what may be the worst movie of all time staring them in the face. That morbid curiosity could actually make this a DVD hit.

And if you’re struck by that same sort of desire for punishment, you can buy the DVD here.

Also:

Tetro – Buy Now

Tokyo Sonata – Buy Now

TV ON DVD

Some day again there will be something interesting in the TV on DVD category, but it’s not this week. Though it is a bit surprising to find out that “Dirt” was on the air for two seasons.

Also:

“According To Jim”: Season 2 – Buy Now

Who wants to see a movie? Unfortunately, this week’s not looking too good in terms of new releases. The three major films debuting are Legion, Tooth Fairy, and Extraordinary Measures. Tooth Fairy is the latest Disney movie starring Dwayne Johnson as a badass hockey player. Legion stars Paul Bettany as Micheal the Archangel who decides to save an unborn child, who will in turn save humanity, and Extraordinary Measures stars Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser as a father and a doctor working together to find a cure for a rare genetic disorder. If you’re up for some more eclectic fare, the French film The Girl on the Train with Catherine Deneuve is apparently worthwhile.

Check out the movies coming out on January 22, 2010…

If you told me ten years ago that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would sport a pink tutu, and fairy wings I would have called you insane. But that’s exactly what’s happens in Tooth Fairy, a family comedy that stars Johnson as the fabled creature who takes children’s teeth and leaves them money under their pillow. The film is directed by Michael Lembeck and he literally places Johnson in the land of fairies and forces him to act out every children’s fantasy known to man. It may be a joy for the kids but it turns out to be a nightmare for the adults…

The Players:

Director: Michael Lembeck

Writer: Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel, Joshua Sternin, Jeffrey Ventimilia, Randi Mayem Singer

Actors: Dwayne Johnson, Julie Andrews, Stephen Merchant, Ashley Judd, Ryan Sheckler, Billy Crystal, Seth McFarlane

Music: George S. Clinton

Director of Photography: David Tattersall, BSC

The Plot:

Tooth Fairy centers on Derek Thompson, an intimidating hockey player known for his ability to knock out his opponents teeth with his deadly charge. He has the ego to match his huge persona and makes sure that everyone around him knows who’s boss. One day he unwisely shatters the dreams of a young fan by telling them they can never grow up to be a success. This causes a domino effect that lands him in Lily’s (Andrews) fairy headquarters. He’s sentenced to two weeks hard time as a tooth fairy, and from that point on cliched laughter and slapstick gags ensue.

The Good:

Billy Crystal: The stand up legend was the only actor who had any genuine comedic timing thanks to his background. He only had two scenes in the movie and both of them were the most memorable out of the entire film. He brought the talent, but most importantly he brought the laughs.

Chase Ellison: The young actor stars as the son of Ashley Judd’s character and has some of the most emotional scenes in the film. He holds his own against someone as physically intimidating as Johnson without breaking a sweat. This kid is one to watch.

The Bad:

Screenplay: The underlying premise of keeping the faith regardless of your age was great, but the script was filled with cliched dialogue and unoriginal content. Every important scene in the film that showed any type of character growth was ripped from somewhere else, and they weren’t trying to hide it.

Johnson and Judd’s Chemistry: Watching these two play a couple was truly cringe-worthy. They’re both good looking, and you’d think they’d link up quite nicely but that wasn’t the case. Their intimate scenes appeared forced and unnatural.

Special Effects: The visuals that were used to show the fairy magic looked very low budget. They didn’t come across as polished or professional, which is sad considering this is a major studio film.

Overall:

Tooth Fairy is an unoriginal family film that takes an old school lesson and adds nothing new to it. The film is filled with stale humor, bad effects, and with the exception of a few, mediocre acting. It’s not worth your time or money.

Rating: 4/10

Tooth Fairy will be in theaters on Friday, January 22nd

This Friday, Dwayne Johnson will once again appear in a family friendly film that’s a mix of fantasy and reality. His latest is entitled Tooth Fairy, and it implies everything that’s associated with the name. The uber-masculine Johnson will don that tight spandex suit, with the matching wings, and even the fairy dust. The actor takes on the legacy of the mystical creature with the help of screen legend Julie Andrews, and actor, writer, and director Stephen Merchant.

Tooth Fairy is directed by Michael Lembeck who’s put together an amazing cast to tell a simply story about having faith in spite of life’s harsh realities. On the surface it’s a comedy, but there’s a deeper meaning underneath all the jokes and glitter. We had the opportunity to speak to Johnson about working with not only Andrews, but Billy Crystal, and Seth McFarlane on the film. He also discussed why wearing a tutu didn’t bruise his ego, and how making the Tooth Fairy was a dream come true…

In the film, Johnson plays a professional hockey player, whose arrogant attitude crushes the spirit of a young boy, and as punishment he’s sentenced to work as a tooth fairy. One of the biggest things the average viewer will have to get over is Johnson’s outfit, so if it’s uncomfortable for us to watch we wondered how it felt for him to wear it.

I felt fine. I think anytime you set out to make a comedy, I don’t think you should put parameters on it. If you’re going to make a comedy, if your sole interest is making people laugh and feel good, and entertaining them, you check your ego at the door. For me it was pretty easy.

He took his comedy gig very seriously, and it didn’t hurt that he was acting opposite some of the best comedians in the business. Stephen Merchant, is known for his work on the BBC version of “The Office” and the cable show “Extras,” and this was one of the few times he’s acted with material that wasn’t his own. Therefore, both he and Johnson worked together to come up with funny things that weren’t always in the original script.

Stephen was wonderful, he’s an incredibly talented guy. There were times when we’d come to the set and we would say, “Lem [Michael Lembeck], listen we have this idea. We’re going to have the most ridiculous, ludicrous fight ever and not throw a punch at all.’ And he’s like, ‘OK, let’s see it.’ And of course that’s what you whined up seeing in the movie.

Billy Crystal has a small part in the film, but it’s one of the most hilarious and stand out bits. We learned in the interview that a lot of it was improv and Johnson just followed his lead. He felt honored to be working with one of the great comedic actors that he grew up watching as a kid.

I had grown up admiring Billy, he’s such an iconic comedic actor. That’s why it was such a pleasure and honor to work with both him and Julie [Andrews]. Billy Crystal, Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor, and Robin Williams were all guys who I really admired growing up so to be in a scene with Billy was fantastic.

Another treat you’ll get from watching Tooth Fairy is a cameo by “Family Guy” creator, writer, and actor, Seth McFarlane. Johnson recently made an appearance on the show, so it seemed liked the duo bartered some kind of a deal. McFarlane’s an animation man, and we rarely see him on the big screen, so his cameo in the film made us wonder how he got involved.

I’m such a big fan of the show “Family Guy” and Seth, and of course his home is at Fox, so the executives over at Fox had come to Lem and said, ‘Hey, what do you think about this idea?’ Lem was like ‘Great, we’ve got a great part for him,’ and of course Seth and I became buddies after that. I said anytime I could return the favor, if you’d let me come on to play, I’d love to, and that’s what you saw.

Next on Johnson’s agenda is the action thriller Faster, and the upcoming comedy The Other Guys. With so many movie genres covered on his resume, we wanted to know if he actually watched any of his older films. Not out of arrogance, but as a way to improve on his craft.

I do, sure. And I enjoy them and for me it’s a way to learn. I always want to continue to get better so for me it goes back to the environment I was raised, in terms of athletics, always watching film and going back and watching performances seeing how you can get better.

You can see Johnson on January 22, 2010 when he takes on the lead role in Tooth Fairy.

Prepare yourself for a few painful minutes of video watching. A trailer has been released for Dwayne Johnson‘s upcoming family comedy, The Tooth Fairy. Last week we brought you the poster for the film that scared me and many of our reader sh*tless. It featured Johnson with wings and ice skates, so you can understand the terror factor. Now that the trailer has been released, it adds a whole other level of weirdness thanks to the use of powder blue spandex and fairy dust.

Take a look at the terrifying trailer for The Tooth Fairy…

As you can see, Johnson stars as a premiere hockey player who’s sentenced to work as a tooth fairy after he disrespects a kid at one of his games. Throughout the film we see Derek stumbling through strangers homes, while trying to get accustomed to his new job. Even though he dreads it in the beginning, he starts to notice a moral change in himself due to his new surroundings.

The Tooth Fairy co-stars Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews, Billy Crystal, and I noticed a little cameo by professional skateboarder, Ryan Sheckler. What’s he doing in the movie? This trailer really hurts my eyes. I need Johnson in a badass action movie to follow this diabetically sweet film, pronto. For goodness sake, he’s starring opposite Mary Poppins!

The Tooth Fairy opens in theaters nationwide on January 22, 2010.

What do you think of the first trailer for The Tooth Fairy?

What the hell is going on? Is Dwayne Johnson setting himself up to be a family friendly actor for the rest of his career? There’s nothing wrong with that, but he has potential to be so much more. Imagine my confusion and sadness when I came across a poster for his upcoming film, The Tooth Fairy. It’s another feature that will have the actor starring alongside a group of children, who will magically help better his character in a profound way.

Take a look at closer look at Dwayne Johnson in this ridiculous get up…

The Tooth Fairy centers on a minor league hockey player named Derek who is sentenced to one week hard labor as a tooth fairy after he crushes a youngster’s hopes. Throughout the film we see Derek stumbling through strangers homes, while trying to get accustomed to his new job. Even though he dreads it in the beginning, he starts to notice a moral change in himself due to his new surroundings.

How many times have we seen this format? Johnson has the potential to be a really great film star, but he’s putting himself into a corner. I’m not saying he has to do bad ass action movies for the rest of his life, but there needs to be a mix. We get it, you can do comedy, action, and drama, but you’ve got to keep it balanced. This film reminds me too much of Vin Diesel‘s The Pacifier, and we all knew after that film the end was near.

The Tooth Fairy opens in theaters nationwide on January 22, 2010.
