Universal and Tom Hanks‘s production company Playtone have optioned the book In The Garden of Beasts, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hanks is also supposedly eyeing a lead role in the film. Based on the Erik Larson novel, the non-fiction novel tells the story of William Dodd, an American Embassador in 1930′s Germany who grows to see the rising evil around him.

This wouldn’t be the star’s first turn around World War II period filmmaking, as Hanks has appeared in Steven Spielberg‘s Saving Private Ryan, and was a producer and narrator for the HBO miniseries The Pacific, and producer and director on Band of Brothers. There’s also his (usually forgotten) turn in 1986′s Every Time We Say Goodbye, where he plays an injured pilot in World War II.

This though sounds like a role tailor-made for the actor. It has an old school Hollywood flavor: he would play a man who grows to become indignant and self-righteous, while also probably trying to stop as much as he can from a position that would allow little traction. The book also details Dodd’s daughter, who was a socialite that carried out affairs with a Gestapo and Russian spy. Father issues, ahoy. You get a good director, and it seems Hanks would have a lock on a best actor nominee whenever the film comes out.

Can you think of anyone else who could be better for the role?

Is Tom Hanks Old Yeller in Stephen Daldry’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close? It seems likely. Honestly, it’s surprising that it’s taken ten years for Hollywood to make a film that uses (and perhaps exploits) the tragedy of September 11, 2001 to make a movie about death (and perhaps a chance to feel good about being alive). Hanks stars with newcomer Thomas Horn, and vets like Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis, and James Gandolfini. Take a look at the trailer…

If this trailer says anything it’s that the film is Oscar bait, and since Extremely Loud is coming out in limited release on Christmas day, that’s no surprise. This film was made to be “in contention” – as has everything that Stephen Daldry has directed. The question is if it’s shameless emotional manipulation or effective emotional manipulation. Regardless, you can’t make a movie about a dead dad and 9/11 and not be the cinematic equivalent of chopping onions.

And frankly this trailer makes this look like bad phony uplift. Maybe it’s the appearance of Max Von Sydow as the likely holy fool/old man character, maybe it’s the use of U2 and the Bono baggage that comes with it, maybe it’s the plot device of finding a home for the key, or maybe it’s every frame of this trailer. Hard to say. But how a movie is sold is not always a reflection of its qualities. We’ll know more come 12/25/11.

Am I being too harsh to this trailer?

Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are movie stars in a world that no longer respects stardom. Studios are more interested these days in titles that have name brand recognition (it requires less work) and so the two appearing together in a film in 2011 means that it’s met with a curious indifference. Shouldn’t Larry Crowne be a bigger deal? Well, like the film itself, the appeal is mellow and surprisingly unassuming, and it’s pleasures are more in what it’s not (loud and dumb) than what it is (a formulaic romantic comedy). Find out more below…

The Players:

Director: Tom Hanks

Screenplay: Tom Hanks, Nia Vardalos

Actors: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wilmer Valderrama

Original Music by: James Newton Howard

Cinematography by: Philippe Rousselot

The Story:

Larry Crowne (Hanks) thinks his life is pretty perfect until he gets fired from his job for not having a college education. Looking for work, he finds few opportunities, so he heads back to school, where he meets Mercedes Tainot (Roberts) his speech teacher. Talia (Mbatha-Raw) is a free spirit who sees that Larry also rides a scooter, and so she decides to help fix up his life, while his interest in Miss Tainot – whose marriage is crumbling, and who drinks to excess – simmers.

The Good:

The Ensemble: As the film was written by actors, there’s a sense that every performer has an internal life and there own story. As such – for a film that ambles along – the sense of community enlivens the picture. And since the film, like its star, aims for likeability, that’s enough to make this a pleasant enough sit-through.

Julia Roberts: Written to her strengths, she gets to play bitchy and bubbly. Both suit her well, and it’s fun to watch her play either giddy or hungover. It’s also nice to see her in a part where she’s playing her age, but not in an awkward or demeaning way.

The Message: Crowne is about someone dealing with life after it goes off the course they thought it would be on. It’s a film of minor triumphs, and though that low-key vibe may be so low that it feels vacuous, Hanks as a director respects his characters enough to not go for over the top theatrics.

The Bad:

The Manic Pixie Dream Girl: The innovation – such as it is – with this film is that like so many romantic comedies, there’s a woman who enters a depressed man’s life and turns it around, but here that’s not the romantic interest. Still, it’s the same sort of thing, and it’s a silly cliche that needs working over.

Slight: Crowne works on its own terms, but it’s the sort of film that leaves your memory shortly after watching it, and little happens that isn’t predicable based on the genre and having seen the trailer. Most movies are predictable, but there’s nothing about the film that makes it something to rush to theaters to see, unless you watch enough movies that the thought of seeing one starring two adults is enough of a motivator.

The End Credits: Few films have done as good a job at sending people out of the theater one the film ends.

Overall:

As a film of modest pleasures, the film succeeds, but like it’s main character, the film’s goals are small and manageable. It works on those terms, but only just.

Rating: 7/10

Larry Crowne hits theaters July 1.

It’s strange that two of the biggest stars in the world are making a low key romantic comedy, but such is the industry. When Julia Roberts rocketed to the A-list, it was because of her role in the hundred million dollar hit Pretty Woman, while Tom Hanks cemented his leading man status with a film like Sleepless in Seattle. Hanks and Roberts partnered together for Larry Crowne – Hanks’s second directorial effort – and their chemistry together is as palpable in the film as it is in this interview. Check it out…

Tell us a little bit about how you met each other and the origin of spectacular.

Tom Hanks: We’ve known each other, I’m guessing 10 years? We met, I figured this out…

Julia Roberts: We can’t really remember when we met, but we figured out when we became friends,

TH: Pals

JR: it was when we did that photo shoot, an explicable photo shoot.

TH: For Premiere magazine, so Premiere Magazine had to be in existence, so that’s how long ago, or how recently it was. And we laughed our heads off.

JR: We did.

TH: And from there it became a pleasant thing. Charlie Wilson’s War, then we wrote this. Spectacular comes from the Apollo 16 astronauts, who were jumping around on the moon and said: this is spectacular! I tell you I’ve never seen anything so spectacular in my life. So Spectacular.

What does the scene of the movie say to college kids out there?

TH: You’re talking to a guy who left college after his third year because I began work in the field that I was studying for. Someone offered me a job as an actor and I was studying theatre at the time, and that’s what happens to Talia in this. College isn’t necessary for everybody and it’s only from what you put into it what you go there for and I think Talia was actually going to college to hang out with cool people. I think that’s the only reason she was going to college – in which case mission accomplished. She got that job, she got that offer and she moved on. That’s in time bravo to her. She took a bigger risk by leaving college and opening up that store than she would be in college taking classes that she didn’t really understand.

The casting was very diverse, was that a conscious effort?

TH: It was a conscious thing because that’s the college that I went to. When I wet to Junior Community College it was loaded with every conceivable type of, it was greatly diverse in an individual, and every single sort of race that was represented. We shot at Cal State Domingus Hills, which is down in Orange County, and has the most diverse student body of any four-year university west of the Mississippi. So we wanted to reflect the world as it actually kind of looks, particularly in a community college.

What are some of the behaviors that you would call a deal-breaker in a relationship?

JR: well, you know, I’m happily married to a person I admire and enjoy, it’s not really far to say or conjure some kind of bad scenario that I wouldn’t tolerate. I mean people have their different ideas of what’s good and what’s happy in this particular scenario that Tom drew for me, it was you know fun to play and Bryan (Cranston) is hilarious. But it’s sad for both of them in the situation they’ve gotten themselves into in that house.

I believe you also didn’t go to college.

JR: I didn’t.

How do you feel like you got the education that you may not have formally received?

TH: It’s the school of hard knocks.

JR: I have very smart parents, I feel I learned a lot from both of my parents, and life experience. Two of my three siblings are older so I suppose I learned from them and became very avid reader at an early age. And enough cannot be said for what you can discover through literature. So I think that was probably my most valued characteristic as a teenager.

I remember while you making an appearance on the David Letterman Show and mentioned you were casing Peter Scolari in the film. I don’t remember seeing him in the movie.

JR: He cut him out.

TH: No, no. He was in the movie but he had a conflict that we could not work out. He was doing an off-Broadway play I can’t remember the name of it, forgive me, that it was actually opening the week that we would have shot his stuff, so alas it didn’t work out. He was doing it, along came the conflict, and such is show business. It actually would have been Frank, the owner of Frank’s, but we were lucky to have Ian Gomez, who we worked with before in the past as well, so, it’s just one the things that happens in big time professional, show business. But Peter was in From Earth to the Moon, Peter was in That Thing You Do, and I always want to work with Peter.

JR: They’re bosom buddies.

TH: There you go. That’s how close we are.

Because directing is a lot more involving than just acting, what about this story drew you to commit to that challenge? And in a summer of huge movies, how do you get people to come see this movie with a potential downer subject?

TH: The six years of talking about this with Nia [Vardalos] really started off when I examined the theme of reinvention, and not just reinvention by way of fate dictating it, but in a really proactive place and how you move on to the next chapter of your life. It really began, I lose my job, go to college and my teacher is Julia Roberts – what would happen? And you just go back and continuously fill up the reasons he would go to college in the first place, and what those issues are. I think it’s fascinating any time you’re going to talk about an individual’s adventure, and in this case it’s the adventure of what he’s going to do for the rest of his life. It’s not a midlife crisis, it’s a midlife disaster. A mid-life crisis is when you wake up and you go, “I have everything but I’m still unhappy.” That doesn’t happen to Larry, Larry thinks it’s the greatest day in the world and he gets fired and he loses all of his community, as well as, he possibly loses his house. That to me is something that we just started off and we just built on it, and it was an idea that just never left and I thought if we could just do it in a very authentic manner, meaning we show it as truly possible. The logic of it all makes sense, as opposed to the usual contrivances of a movie like this – an evil father in law who doesn’t want his daughter to marry him, a boss who is trying to blah blah blah blah, or whatever is going on. It’s a type of move that I, myself, am attracted to as an audience going guy, and I think it’s a delicate balance to make a movie about it.

How do we compete in the marketplace? Forgive me, I haven’t the slightest fucking idea. It’s going to be interesting because you say, here we are in the summer, a big time, it’s not the summer, it’s year-round! The nature of the movies is different than it was five years ago, and they’re all driven by the possibilities of CGI, which means you can make anything happen on screen that you can possibly desire. That’s a great brand of freedom that is given over the filmmaker. When you’re going to try to have people talk in a room and actually reflect as we know it and have people recognize themselves and their own street and their house, then you’re aiming for the high country, and it’s a much bigger gamble. You can interview all the marketing gurus and the people in charge, and the people you have to fight with in order to get your seats here, and we all talk about release dates an counter programming blah blah blah. But at the end of the day it’s got to be a good movie, a funny movie and it’s got to make people think, hey, I couldn’t have spent my time any better. And by the way, the thing about the guy who wore a suit and the planet exploded and he still got the girl by traveling through time, that movie sucked! I’m not saying any movies suck, but you know what I’m talking about.

When the recession happened, the movie took on a whole new meaning.

TH: Yeah, and it’s still going on. You can make a movie about that (the recession) and the first best version of that would be a documentary where you could really see what’s going on. The second best version of that, I think, would be a movie that is at the end of the day extremely depressing and/or serious or so hard hitting that it offers up no hope. But we are competing in a marketplace in which the thing we might have going for us is the true battle against cynicism. That’s what Larry Crowne is about more than anything else. It’s funny – at the end of this film, Larry Crowne lives in a crappy apartment, he still has a lousy job that he can’t even afford to pay his gas in his big car, and he’s going to school with no real set future of what’s going to happen. But he’s got this amazing new forceful presence in his life and he can honestly say “the best thing that ever happened to me was getting fired from my job.” Now that actually does happen in the real world and oddly enough it’s a glamorous beat in order to create a motion picture. That’s what we’re going for and if you do that well enough, enough people will respond to it.

What is it like to have a significant other in the film?

JR: I would just like to say this about all the married people working together on set, it was a joy and that is te great joy – the go to work with people that you love or people you’re in love with, or people that you just love, and be creative and artistic and make things that you want to send out into the world and make people feel good. It was a great environment to work in, leaving my family behind and coming to work with this people. It was a dream. So, we do what we want to do and we appreciate that.

TH: Yeah, my wife and I – we met making a movie it’s not just our job, it’s our life. It’s what we do naturally whether we’re working together or not, I gave the script to Rita (Wilson) and asked who do you want to be? So she picked it out her part and she went to town on it. It’s just a blast, it’s fun. It’s what we do for, you it’s amazing we get paid to do it.

JR: And she was hot blonde.

TH: I said “baby, is there any way at all we could take that wig home at the end of the work day? Can you just keep it on? Let me take it off later on tonight.” No, we get to play at work.

In Larry Crowne, it seems like your life is over, but you make the best out of it and have you two been in a situation when this isn’t going the right way, something came along and changed it for you? And the second part of the question is, you both have Oscars. Where are they, do you still look at them?

JR: well, the darkest day for me would be the fifth day of shooting.

TH: yeah, that was a bad day. I called you the C word, it was horrible. I’m joking, sheez.

JR: My Oscar’s at Tom’s house because I have all of his. We switch.

TH: Mine are up on the shelf with all the kids’ trophies and horse ribbons and soccer plaques, shiny bits. All the bling, the family bling, celebrating all that. But what was the first question. Now, quite frankly our careers have been pretty well-chronicled, but there is a time I’m going to guess for both of us when we’re living in a house in the Valley that we cannot afford, we have been fired from the job that we had and it’s been 13 months since you’ve worked in the city and the phone is still not ringing, and you wonder if in fact you’re going to take the job at the Der Wienerschnitzel. When you have that moment it never quite goes away.

JR: I had the Manhattan version of that.

TH: what, The Brewburger?? Instead of the Der Wienerschnitzel?

JR: I sold shoes

TH: that’s right, she sold shoes. There you go. Thank you very much everybody.

You’re not going to wait another 10 years to direct a film, are you?

TH: I tell you, it takes it out of you. Both of these, they take a long time to develop and it percolates in your head until you want to get this off, it’s like a very personal mission.

Now this one must have been a little harder since you were going to star in the movie

TH: In all honesty, I’ve made a bunch of movies like Cast Away where I’m the only guy in the movie and the only place to be is right next to the camera, in costume and ready to go, and the years and more specifically the four month prior to beginning shooting, is where the big preparation as the director goes. Because I knew we were going ot get on the set and the best way to go about this is relatively seamlessly, jump in as Larry, come back and go back forth and just play. Because the good news is, if you’re the boss, if it ain’t good you don’t use it. You just cut it out.

Larry Crowne opens July 1. Check it out.

Studios can promise you the end of a franchise, but when a a film makes more than $1.6 billion, they’re going to rethink it. Tom Hanks, the voice of the Toy Story‘s beloved Woody, just told the BBC that Toy Story 4 is happening. During the premiere of his newest movie Larry Crowne, Hanks also told “Showbiz Tonight” that he believes another Woody and Buzz Lightyear movie is underway (via The Marquee Blog).

“I understand it’s happening and if it is, I hope they’ll hire me. They have almost every line I’ve ever said in the hard drive up there at Pixar. So they might not need me! I hope they’ll have some unique grunts they’re going to need from me so I can get in there and do it.”

The Toy Story franchise is one of the most successful franchises out there, both critically and financially. In 1995, Toy Story made $300 million. 1999′s sequel was followed with more success, grossing $495 million, and then in 2010 Toy Story 3 was the highest grossing film of the year. Also, let’s add that the latter won the Oscar for best Animated feature.

While Hanks can think there’s another Toy Story in the works, Pixar has the final say. Director Lee Unkrich told CNN that there would be no more sequels. More than once, he’s compared the last scene where Andy is driving away and looking back, to his own experience when his grandmother died. That’s closure. Why mess with something so great? Oh, that’s right, money.

What do you think? Do you want a Toy Story 4?

“Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, together at last!” That’s the marketing hook for Hanks’s film Larry Crowne, which he co-wrote and directed – or at least what’s supposed to be appealing about this. Then again, they were in Charlie Wilson’s War together, and that disappeared. The first trailer played up the idea of a man (Hanks) starting his life over after being laid off, this new trailer goes less with the melancholy, and more the yuks by playing up the presence of George Takei and Cedric the Entertainer. Check it out…

This is a slightly more charming version of the original trailer, but it’s weird to think that these two coming together isn’t an event film. The industry has changed so much since the 90′s (when both were in their heyday), that it will be interesting to see if this bit of counter-programming works.

But if the first trailer captured the tone more honestly, two things have happened: one is that they have rejiggered the marketing campaign (probably out of fear), and two they may be afraid of selling the despair that comes with unemployment and starting over to a nation that is dealing with high unemployment rates. Interestingly, Bridesmaids was able to have a character suffering a terrible financial crisis, but that film has now made over a hundred million dollars. This looks like a word of mouth hit, but it would have been a sure thing fifteen years ago.

Are Roberts and Hanks the new Hanks and Ryan?

Well, for anyone that isn’t totally sick of Green Day or American Idiot (hello to all three of you), this will come as great news: the pop-punk band’s concept record turned Broadway musical has been sold to Universal Studios and will now be adapted into a film, allowing its dark dominion over pop culture and all of our minds to be complete (kind of like Videodrome, but without James Woods going nuts and killing everyone).

According to Billboard, “Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, who optioned the rights before Idiot began its Broadway run, will produce via their Playtone banner along with the band, Pat Magnarella and Tom Hulce.” The film is set to be directed by Michael Mayer, who also directed the stage version of American Idiot.

While no screenplay has been written, Milk writer Dustin Lance Black is in talks to take on the job of morphing a “concept album tackling the ideas of love vs. rage” that followed three characters, “the aimless Jesus of Suburbia, punk rock freedom fighter St. Jimmy and Whatsername,” into a cohesive musical film that doesn’t, you know, suck (I’m looking at you Across the Universe, and I’m glaring hard). No word yet on whether the Broadway cast—which includes Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong—will be coming onboard the film.

What do you think of an American Idiot film?

When we last heard from the Wachowskis they were smarting from the failure of 2008′s Speed Racer, and still known in the public for failing to deliver with the Matrix sequels. They will now be returning with a collaboration with Tom Tykwer to co-write and direct Cloud Atlas, which has signed Tom Hanks as one of its stars, and will be distributed stateside by Warner Brothers.

Focus features will handle the international distribution, and the film will be sold to different international territories at Cannes. The film is based on the David Mitchell novel of the same name that tells six interconnected stories about how actions like murder and kindness reverberate through time. It sounds like heady stuff.

Hanks has been attached to or circling a number of projects of late, so it’s unknown how large his role in this production would be. It’s more than likely he’s attached himself to the film to help it get financing.

And from all press reports it is officially no longer the Wachowski brothers but Andy and Lana Wachowski. How the three directors plan on working with each other has not been essayed. Likely the film will be broken into sections, though it’s unknown how. The Wachowski’s haven’t done many interviews since The Matrix came out, and with the news of Lana’s change in gender, their shyness seems deserved. Terrence Malick has been able to pull off a similar feat, but it is rare. Likely Tykwer will be on point for interviews on this one.

We’ll be keeping an eye on this film’s development.

Are you excited for more Wachowski films?

Universal is releasing Larry Crowne - which was co-written, directed and stars Tom Hanks - on July 1. In the film he appears alongside Julia Roberts with a murderer’s row of support, including Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston, Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson, Blaxploitation legend Pam Grier, and comedians Cedric the Entertainer and Rob Riggle. The film is about a middle aged man reinventing himself after he gets laid off, and – maybe, just maybe – finding love. At once it’s obvious that this is a movie starring two of the biggest A-listers on the planet, but it’s also strange to see a character-driven dramedy released in the action-packed summer months. Take a look at the trailer…

The main element that’s going to make or break this movie is tone. Larry Crowne comes across a little broad in the trailer, and the baggage put on the main character – like the moped – could turn the audience against the loveable loser. Films like these are always balancing acts. The other problem the film might face is that for many getting laid off or being worried about being laid off is too real for the start of a romantic comedy.

Hanks wrote the script with My Big Fat Greek Wedding‘s Nia Vardalos. Post-Wedding, Vardalos has struggled to recapture the success of that runaway hit. Perhaps working with Hanks will put her back into the mainstream. Vardalos also appears in the film.

Larry Crowne stars two adults looking to figure out their lives, and that seems refreshing with so much of cinema geared toward a much younger audience. At the same time it also makes the film seem like a risk, or something from another era. The last time Hanks and Roberts paired up, they made Charlie Wilson’s War, which was both an awards and box office disappointment. That though was political, this is not.

Are Hanks and Roberts the new Tracy and Hepburn?

Tom Hanks is nothing but smart about what projects he takes, and he’s been very good at managing his career as both a star and an actor. That – according to Deadline Hollywood – he’s circling Sony’s adaptation of A Captain’s Duty makes sense as he’s a perfect fit for the role. Based on the true story of Richard Phillips, the film is being produced by Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti and Kevin Spacey. Billy Ray – director of Shattered Glass and Breach, and the current writer on The Hunger Games - has submitted the draft that got Hanks’ attention.

When the story of Phillips allowing himself to be taken hostage by Somali pirates instead of his crew, and then his subsequent rescue by Navy SEALs was made public in 2009, Hollywood was already clamoring for the story, and book publishers immediately courted Phillips to sell his story. The book A Captain’s Duty was published in April of 2010.The film was put in development shortly thereafter.

The story has everything one can see Hanks handling readily: nobility in the face of great danger, and the struggle to maintain hope in the face of capture. And if Ray was able to make that cinematic, it comes across as a strong Oscar contender on its face.

The only question is Hanks’s plate: He’s currently developing Jungle Cruise with Tim Allen, and he’s now shooting director Stephen Daldry’s adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close with Sandra Bullock and Max Von Sydow, which is also being produced by Scott Rudin. If Hanks jumps into this project – and his working relationship with Rudin was good – it will surely come together quickly.

Tom Hanks versus pirates, an easy sell or the easiest sell?

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen want to turn their big screen partnership into a live action feature. The duo have worked “together” on all three Toy Story films as Buzz Lightyear and the Cowboy Woody and now they’re ready for a new collaboration. According to Deadline, Hanks and Allen are looking to star in a family film called Jungle Cruise for, you guessed it, Disney.

Staying in the same spirit as Pirates of the Caribbean, Disney wants to adapt their Magic Kingdom theme park ride Jungle Cruise for the big screen. They’re making moves to nab Hanks and Allen to headline the project, which they’ve been trying to produce for years. They’ve hired Roger S.H. Schulman to write the script but a director has yet to be found.

Jungle Cruise will be a great segue for Allen who’s set to return to television next year in a new pilot for ABC. This will be his first regular TV gig since “Home Improvement.”

The actual Jungle Cruise attraction, features a boat ride throughout various rivers where different animatronic jungle animals pop up during the journey. We think we have an idea of how they can work that into a story. It reminds us of Allen’s 1997 film Jungle 2 Jungle.

Can Jungle Cruise be turned into a movie?

We love Tom Hanks. We really love that man! After last night’s snore-fest aka The Oscars wrapped up, we were in need of some real comedy. Thank God for Jimmy Kimmel and two-time Academy Award winner Hanks. Despite the dramatic and prestigious roles he’s played in the past, the actor always returns to his comedic roots. Hanks appeared on Kimmel’s post-Oscar special last night, where he debuted a sketch called “Toddlers & Tiaras.” Comedy ensued. Check out the video…

In the sketch his daughter Sophie Hanks participated in The Miss Ultimate Sexy Baby Nevada Pagent. That name alone strikes fear into our hearts. There are several words in the title that shouldn’t be together, specifically sexy and baby. We love the fact that Sophie’s T-shirt says “Bosum Baby,” which references Hanks classic TV show. He also called her Hooch, referencing the dog from the film Turner and Hooch, and we can’t ignore his license plate, which said Gump_1.

Oh Tom, what does Sophie know about the 1990s let alone the 1980s? Her dance to Poison was so inappropriate but still hilarious. Also, the Ron Howard cameo at the end was classic! “Hanks has a problem!”

What did you think of Hanks’ Kimmel skit?
