‘The Great Gatsby’ Trailer Features The Great American Novel In 3D, With Auto-Tune

When you think of the Great American Novel set in the roaring 1920s, you think of 3D films with an Auto-Tuned soundtrack, right? Well, if so, you’ll dig the trailer for Baz Luhrman’s over the top take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. If not, well… you may wish to look away for the next two minutes and 30 seconds.

Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio’s two facial expressions (Eyebrow-cocked and smirking! Brow-furrowed and frowning!) in a stunning three dimensions, the trailer at least appears to capture excesses of the Jazz Age by running them through the filter of Luhrman’s own natural tendency to avoid subtlety at all costs. That said, Luhrman and DiCaprio seem to be firmly in their William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet mode, recasting a classic bit of literature in an opulent, quasi-modern light. How blasphemous you find that to be probably depends on how much you love the original novel, and how willing you are to view the rise of fall of Jay Gatsby as punctuated by Auto-Tune.

Dig the trailer below, courtesy of Warner Bros., in which writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maquire) narrates the tale of his falling under the sway of the mysterious and self-made Jay Gatsby as 1922 roars around them. The Great Gatsby also stars Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, and Elizabeth Debicki, and is set for a December 25 release.

Tobey Maguire Cast In Ang Lee’s ‘Life Of Pie’ Adaptation

After being cast in Baz Luhrman’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby in 3D (sweet, sweet Jesus), it looks like Tobey Maguire is set to star in another cinematic adaptation of great literature—according to Deadline, the former Spider-Man has been cast in Ang Lee’s take on Life of Pi, the adaptation of Yann Martel’s bestselling novel.

Maguire will play a writer interviewing an Indian man who, when he was a child, escaped “a shipwreck but is stranded on a life raft with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a tiger.”

Tobey Maguire is no stranger to Ang Lee films, having previously starred in Lee’s films The Ice Storm and Ride With The Devil.

As we previously reported, Lee has snagged newcomer Suraj Sharma to play the title role in the film, who “literally beat out thousands of young actors to land the part.”

The film is set for a 2012 release, and the entire production is set to be filmed in 3D, to which I would roll my eyes but seriously, at this point, I’m just too tired of making fun of 3D to do any better than lightly cross my eyes at the news.

Bourne Legacy Shortlist: Gyllenhaal, Hedlund, Fassbender and More

We’ve known for a while that Universal is planning a prequel/spin-off to their highly successful Jason Bourne franchise, but they’ve yet to find an actor to play the lead. According to several sources, director and screenwriter Tony Gilroy has cast a very wide net on potential candidates for the primary role in The Bourne Legacy. They include everyone from 20 year old Alex Pettyfer to Australian actor Joel Edgerton. Check out the complete shortlist below…

The Bourne Legacy will focus on a new character, which will leave it open for the possibility of Matt Damon returning to the franchise down the line. Legacy doesn’t center on Jason Bourne but a new assassin with a similar background as him.

According to Variety and Deadline, these are the actors who’ve been mentioned as Bourne possibilities.

This is truly an interesting bunch of actors. At first glance, we’re not sure what type of look they’re going for. Dano doesn’t exactly strike us as an action star but then again, Damon didn’t seem like the best bet for the series and look how he turned out. The trade claims that no one is currently in the lead for the role, but they’re all being looked at.

Sundance 2011: The Details Movie Review

Infidelity, charity, blackmail, raccoons, and a bow & arrow. These are a few of the details in Jacob Aaron Estes’ The Details, and the devil is in them. The film, which stars Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Banks, and Ray Liotta, Laura Linney, and Dennis Haysbert, is a chaotic dark comedy, dripping with the offbeat indie sensibility which is characteristic of Sundance dramedys. The Details is the story of Jeff (Maguire), a successful doctor with a young family, whose life takes a turn for the crazy when his recently sodded back yard becomes a buffet for a group of invasive raccoons. His obsession over beautifying his idyllic home becomes yet another point of contention between him and his wife (Banks). When the rockiness of their marriage drives Jeff into the arms of an old med-school friend, who happens to be married (Washington & Liotta), and his nosy neighbor (Linney) discovers his secrets, things take a turn for the weird. The only way Jeff can hope find redemption for himself is by imposing himself in the life of a terminally ill basketball partner (Haysbert), and hope that his good deeds will be enough to make things right, karmically. But, as can be expected from a silly, dark comedy, nothing works out as planned.

The Players:

The Good:

The Cast – Every one of these actors is playing against the type they are typically known for. The effervescent Elizabeth Banks plays a cranky, difficult housewife. Laura Linney plays a whacked-out, paranoid neighbor with the kind of crazy abandon that would otherwise be a role given to Catherine O’Hara. Ray Liotta brings a sensitivity to his tough-guy persona which is unexpected and welcome. Dennis Haysbert, complete with a salt and pepper beard and a set of false, cracked teeth, steps down from the eloquent, dignified kinds of characters we’ve become accustomed to seeing him in. And this could mark the first time Tobey Maguire has actually seemed like an adult, rather than a boy playing one.
Editing/Pacing - A lot happens in this movie. Significant plot points come like rapid fire, but with stylized montages combined with even pacing during scenes, they never seem especially rushed or disjointed. The story follows a logical progression, with Murphy’s law in full effect. On paper, the occurrences of this film seem extremely silly, but as it goes on and finds its footing, everything in it seems to make perfect sense.

The Bad:

The Characters – With the exception of Dennis Haysbert’s Lincoln, and possibly Ray Liotta’s Peter, there is not one sympathetic character among the cast. They are all shallow, manipulative, and generally despicable. Why should we care about any of these characters, when none of them exhibit qualities worth the effort? Jeff’s quest for redemption may be a genuine one, but he’s only got himself to blame for putting himself in the position he finds himself in.
Trifling – At the end of the day, this movie carries little weight. Considering its placement among such strong and significant films at the Sundance Film Festival, it really doesn’t compare to the emotional experiences of just about any other film screened.

Overall:

The Details is an enjoyable enough film in which its cast get to stretch their muscles in new directions, but ultimately falls short of being a truly engaging film. Laura Linney’s performance is exceptional, and includes one of the funniest sex scenes of recent memory, and Dennis Haysbert could make reading the ingredients off of a soup can sound impressive, but the story and its consequences don’t end up leading to an especially satisfying place.

Tobey Maguire Rumored As The Hobbit Again

Isn’t it convenient that once Tobey Maguire‘s connection to Spider-Man was severed, old casting rumors began to resurface? According to multiple sources, Maguire is once again in the running for the role of Bilbo Baggins in the Guillermo del Toro adaptation of The Hobbit. This isn’t the fist time this story has reared its head, months ago the actor was seen as a possible candidate but Spider-Man 4 kept getting in the way.

There have been two recent reports regarding Maguire’s casting as Baggins, one came from the non reputable Sun, and the other was from John Campea’s (AMC Entertainment) Twitter. Apparently, the actor signed on ASAP after Spider-Man was given the shaft. The Sun continued to say that del Toro and producer Peter Jackson have been after him for months to star in the film but to no avail. According to Campea, he’s been told by a close source to the Hobbit camp that Maguire’s casting is a done deal.

He stated, “I have been personally told by a source very close to Guillermo del Toro that it’s true… Tobey Maguire IS The Hobbit.”

We don’t know who to believe. Of course Maguire would be a perfect fit for the role, because he’s naturally short and shaggy without the help of makeup. Also it would make logical sense, now that he’s currently unemployed. No official statement has been released from the actor or the studio so this is still strong speculation. We’ll let you know when the deal is sealed.

Spider-Man 4 Over, Sony Reboots With New Cast

Are we surprised that the latest Spider-Man movie has been pushed back an entire year? Are we shocked that it will no longer be Spider-Man 4, but some reboot that includes new actors and a new premise? If this announcement throws you for a loop, you haven’t been following the play by play of drama that has surrounded the film since its inception. According to Comingsoon, Sony has decided to start from scratch with the Spider-Man franchise, which means no Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, or Sam Raimi.

The last time we heard about the development of the film, Sony and Raimi were both having issues with the script. They couldn’t settle on a story that they both liked, so the studio has released a statement revealing their solo plans for the web slinging series. Instead of going Raimi’s route, they will produce the James Vanderbilt screenplay that focuses on “a teenage Peter Parker grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.”

Even though Tobey Maguire still has a youthful face he can’t pull off a teenager anymore, which means he’s no longer in the picture. This also means that a new director will take over the project, and Raimi is no longer attached. He released an official statement regarding his feelings about Sony’s decision to move along without him or his cast.

“Working on the ‘Spider-Man’ movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job.”

Apparently, Raimi didn’t feel as if he could make the deadline needed to complete the film so he pulled out of Spider-Man 4, before the studio made their final decision to scrap the whole thing. There’s some speculation that the reboot may be in 3-D, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. The new film is slated for a 2012 release, one year after the pitched 2011 date that Sony set for Spidey 4.

My opinion on this is hot and cold. I would have loved to see Raimi redeem himself in the eyes of comic book fans everywhere, but unfortunately it’s not going to happen. I’m more than happy that we won’t have to see Kirsten Dunst in the role of Mary Jane. That was some of the worst casting ever, and if anything or anyone needed to be scrapped it was her. In the coming weeks after the announcement settles, Sony will have more info on the Spider-Man reboot, so until then stay tuned!

Tobey Maguire Says Spider-Man 4 is Evolving

While the future of Spider-Man 4 is up in the air, Tobey Maguire assures us that everything is going according to plan. Just yesterday, we received news that Paramount was shifting Thor‘s release date to May 6, 2011, the same day Spidey is set to hit theaters. The date could change, but the idea that Spider-Man 4 is going to be a complete and utter mess remains the same.

According to the Associated Press, Maguire said the film’s preproduction snags aren’t dampening his mood, but the more reassurance we get that Spider-Man 4 is doing okay, the more it seems like it isn’t.

“Like anything, it’s a process. We’re just in the midst of the process. We have a lot of great stuff in terms of story and script. We’re just trying to dial it in and get it ready as quickly as possible. Of course, these movies are a very big undertaking and take a lot more time than a drama or something more straightforward,” said Maguire on Thursday.

He says the film is developing right now, and he’s excited about the future of Peter Parker’s story.

“Not only do I have specific ideas, but the ideas are evolving on the page. It’s all happening right now. It’s all sort of coming together. It’s very exciting to me. I think the evolution of the character is really exciting, to be rooted in the history of what we’ve done already and to have a continuity, yet have a progression or evolution,” he said.

If only Spider-Man 3 had been as amazing as the first two, then maybe Sam Raimi and Sony wouldn’t be having this kind of problem. The franchise could have ended with a bang, but instead they have to try and clean up the mess they made.

Tobey Maguire to Star in Prisoners of Trebek

Hollywood has been running wild with board game adaptations, and now their jumping on the TV game show wagon. Over at Pajiba, they’ve posted some interesting news on a developing film that will center on the Alex Trebek series, Jeopardy. Oddly enough, the man attached to star in the project is none other than Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire.

The premise for the film centers on a man who tries to master the game of Jeopardy but ends up finding himself and falling in love instead. If that wasn’t diabetically sweet enough, the movie’s actually based on a true story. There hasn’t been much info released on the specifics of the plot, but we do know that William Wheeler wrote the script. The film is entitled Prisoners of Trebek and will be produced by both Maguire and Mark Gordon who is on the look out for directors.

Maguire can currently be seen in the Jim Sheridan war drama Brothers, and is gearing up to reprise his role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man 4. The actor has that nerdy appeal to him so he can definitely pull off a character who’s obsessed with the game of Jeopardy. The screenplay must be really interesting to get him to take it on with such a premise. For goodness sake it has Alex Trebek’s name in the title.

Brothers: Movie Review

Master story teller Jim Sheridan has brought us an English language adaptation of the 2004 Danish film Brødre. In Brothers, the director who’s known for his work on My Left Foot and In America, decides to tackle the effects of war on the relationships of a tight knit family. Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, and Jake Gyllenhaal lead the cast in this eye opening tale about death, love, and betrayal.

The Plot:

Brothers centers on a military family led by Sam and Grace Cahill (Maguire and Portman), high school sweethearts who are the parents of two young daughters. Sam is the older brother of Tommy, an ex-con who’s been recently released from prison. When Sam’s shipped out for another tour in Afghanistan his helicopter is shot down while on duty. The family is notified of his death, causing Grace and Tommy to pick up the pieces in the aftermath. While trying to heal, the unlikely pair develop a close relationship, which causes a rift when Sam unexpectedly returns. He’s a changed man, suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and unable to communicate the horror he saw overseas.

The Good:

Tobey Maguire: It’s hard to think of Maguire as a threatening force, but his portrayal of Sam Cahill was terrifying and unnerving. His reenactment of a soldier suffering from post traumatic stress disorder was very honest and real.
The Love Triangle: Unlike most films that have this type of underlying love story, it doesn’t lay it on thick. There is a brewing connection between Grace and Tommy but it’s not the main focus of the film.
Cinematography: A lot of the war scenes, especially the parts that took place in captivity were shot in a documentary style. They had a raw, edginess to them that made you feel as if you were watching the footage on CNN and not in a theater.
Bailee Madison: Both young actresses were on their game, but the youngest daughter in particular is talented beyond her years. Madison showed a range of emotion from a child that you wouldn’t expect someone of her age to understand let alone project.

The Bad:

Screenplay: The script for Brothers makes you think while you’re in the theater, but once the film is over it leaves you. There’s no lasting effect from the events that take place within the story. It’s not generic, but it’s not overtly unique either.
Clifton Collins Jr: Collins played Sam’s superior officer and his part was very cut and dry. His character is used to progress the military aspect of the story, but whenever he’s onscreen he doesn’t capture your attention. His part is very one dimensional and could have been played by anybody.

Overall:

Brothers is an honest look at a family dealing with the after effects of war. It highlights the strain it puts on relationships and how it severs connections that were once strong. It will definitely make you think, but it’s not a life altering film.

Brothers hits theaters everywhere on December 4, 2009.

Crazy New Brothers Trailer

Tobey Maguire goes coo-coo for Coco Puffs in the second trailer for Brothers, the upcoming drama from director Jim Sheridan. It’s a disturbing tale of love, lies, and betrayal with Maguire, Natalie Portman, and Jake Gyllenhaal at the center of it. There are a lot of people who have been waiting for a movie that would feature these three young actors starring opposite one another and finally it’s here.

This is hard for me to say, but Tobey Maguire looks like a scary badass in this movie! He must have once again gone on his Seabiscuit diet to get that frail, AWOL soldier look. The film centers on a young wife and mother (Portman) trying to put her life back together after her husband (Maguire) goes missing in Afghanistan. With the help of his younger brother (Gyllenhaal) things begin to fall back in place, that is until her husband makes a surprise return from the presumed dead.

Tobey doesn’t exactly strike fear into the hearts of audiences often, but he looks like he may be able to pull it off here. Perhaps if they gave him a haircut instead of eye liner and bangs in Spider-Man 3, his evil portrayal might have been just as believable?

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire Remaking The Third Man?

Rumor alert! Rumor alert! There’s word spreading across the web that Leonardo DiCaprio and fellow actor and childhood friend Tobey Maguire are remaking, The Third Man. Over at Chud, they’re regarding it as a rumor but an interesting one none the less. They believe that the Hollywood duo will star in a revamp of the 1949 original that was directed by Carol Reed.

According to their source, DiCaprio and Maguire will star in the film with a screenplay written by Steven Knight. Knight wrote the story for the acclaimed feature Eastern Promises, the 2007 crime drama that starred Viggo Mortensen. The package has supposedly been sent out to bidders and is in waiting. No director is attached at the moment, just the three talents previously mentioned.

I love Leo and Tobey, and I’d love to see them in a big budget film together. The last time I saw them co-star in a movie it was in the mid-nineties and they both still looked like children. Then again, Leo didn’t start looking like an adult until 2006, and Tobey still looks like a kid, but hey whatever works. The original Third Man starred Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles as the male leads, so that’s going to be a tough combination to beat.

New Moon, True Blood, Battlestar Galactica Take Over Scream Awards

Quite possibly the three most talked about (and over-rated) films and TV shows of the year, New Moon, “True Blood,” and “Battlestar Galactica” will be taking over the 2009 Scream Awards! Vampires seem to be ruling everything these days, so why not dedicate an event to them!

SCREAM will celebrate the year of the vampire craze with the cast of New Moon introducing yet ANOTHER world premiere of more, never-been-seen-before footage from the film. Although they have not given the names of which cast members will be present, I’m sure we can expect to see the usual trio of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.

Next up on the vampire attendees, will be the cast and creators of the hit series “True Blood.” Alan Ball, Stephen Moyer, Anna Paquin, Alexander Skarsgård, Sam Trammell and apparently “more” will all be in attendance. We’re not quite sure who the more will be yet, but as long as Skarsgard is there I’m set. What they’ll be doing? Not exactly sure. Hopefully not biting people.

(Sidenote: I wonder if we could get Pattinson to battle Moyer and we can settle once and for all which vampire series is better)

Finally, steering away from the vampires and more into the sci-fi realm is the “Battlestar Galactica” cast! Edward James Olmos, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, James Callis, Kate Vernon, Katee Sackhoff, Michael Trucco Tahmoh Penikett and executive producer David Eick will be reuniting for a final farewell and a special tribute to horror legend George Romero.

In addition, Spike TV will also be partnering up with Comic-Con once again and honoring the greatest comic-book hero of all, Stan Lee. Tobey Maguire will be leading the tribute to one of the most beloved and influential comic book legends of all time, for his legendary work on characters such as Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, Iron Man and The Hulk.

Abrams’ sci-fi action-adventure “Star Trek” tops the “SCREAM 2009” list with 17 nominations including the categories of The Ultimate Scream, Best Science Fiction Movie, Best Director, Best Ensemble, Holy Sh*t Scene-of-the-Year and a nod in the all-new Fight Scene-of-the-Year category. Comic book-inspired blockbusters “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “Watchmen” each nabbed 13 nominations, big screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best selling novel “Twilight” received 10 nominations, while HBO’s vampire-themed television series “True Blood” garnered nine nominations. Fans can log onto scream.spike.com until Saturday, October 17 to vote for their favorites.

“SCREAM 2009” will tape on Saturday, October 17 in Los Angeles, CA. The two-hour extravaganza will premiere on Spike TV on Tuesday, October 27 (10:00 PM-Midnight, ET/PT).
