The Tourist: Movie Review

It’s time for some pretty people blowing up pretty places in The Tourist! Luckily for us, the film is actually a bit better than the average run of the mill sexy, action adventure and is entertaining enough to keep you interested the whole way through despite it not being in any way, shape, or form original or surprising. But it is fun and easy for the whole family to go and see if you’re too afraid to see one of the best films of the year also coming out this weekend, The Fighter. But hey, some people like photo shoots with acting…

The Plot:

An American tourist (Depp) visits Italy to mend a broken heart, but crosses paths with a female Interpol agent (Jolie) who plans to use him as her pawn. Soon the tourist finds himself in a whirlwind of intrigue and danger.

The Good:

It’s Pretty: Beautiful shots, beautiful locations, beautiful people… it’s a whole lot a pretty going on everywhere you look. It’s not exactly a challenge to make Venice, Italy and two of the best looking people in the world look good, but they still deserve some mention for doing so.
Self-Aware: The last line in the film (don’t worry I won’t spoil anything) about Depp’s face not only wraps up the movie but is very much said with a wink to the audience. I thought it was rather accurate that when Jolie enters ANY room, all the men around her ogle her with their eyes. The film seemed to know what it was and who the people in it were, which made it a little bit easier to swallow.
Supporting Cast: The way they used Rufus Sewell was brilliant. He’s the one good surprise that I didn’t see coming and was well cast and used in the movie. Paul Bettany and Timothy Dalton both put in great performances and as predicted raised the bar on the level of acting in the film.
The Pace: Often times film’s like these lose their pacing about half-way through, but despite my pessimistic behavior walking into the theater the film managed to keep me interested throughout.

The Bad:

Cliche Upon Cliche: From the English baddy to the convenient romance to the random dance sequence — think of every espionage thriller cliche over the past 50 years and it’s in this film. There’s literally nothing original about it and the twist is good, but predictable.
Time for a Music Number: There are two places in the film where the music really fails. One is the random song choice used instead of keeping with the score and the second is the dance number which goes with my cliche comment.
Predictable: It’s so incredibly easy to see where this film is going from 20 minutes in. Though there are a few decent twists there aren’t nearly enough surprises or suspense for a film like this.

Overall:

This is a pretty film and not entirely disappointing, but there are far better espionage movies out there and far better ones with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. It’s an easy flick to watch and is entertaining enough to keep your attention, but that’s about the highest praise I can give it.

The story of the film centers on an American Tourist (Depp) visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. Elise (Jolie) is an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path. Against the breathtaking backdrop of Venice, Frank pursues a potential romance but soon finds himself the pursued as he and Elise are caught in a whirlwind of intrigue and danger.

Of course, none of the leads would be able to get caught up in the choas if it wasn’t for our find supporting actors!

Timothy Dalton, Linda Hamilton Get Roughed Up on Chuck

Watch out everybody! Linda Hamilton’s wearing a pant suit, and Timothy Dalton’s wearing a cardigan in the latest episode of “Chuck.” If that’s not two actor’s reversing their roles we don’t know what is. Sarah Connor and James Bond will appear alongside each other this week in the episode entitled, “Chuck vs. the First Fight.” Find out what will happen and check out a few photos below…

The last time we checked, Hamilton appeared on the show as Mary Bartowski, Chuck’s less than trustworthy mother. This week, Dalton will guest star as someone from her past who could possibly clear up all the holes in her story. He’ll play Bartowski’s handler and according to her portrayer the situation will get a lot worse before it gets better.

“I’m in handcuffs because they think I’m a mole, or no longer with the CIA,” Hamilton says. “So they think I’m the bad girl, and I’m trying to get information to prove I’m not the bad girl. Then the Russians come,” says Hamilton.

So much drama, not enough time! “Chuck” airs tonight at 8 PM on NBC.

Timothy Dalton to Appear on NBC’s Chuck

Earlier today we learned that NBC’s “Chuck” plans on creating its own version of The A-Team with Eric Roberts, Dave Batista, and Joel David Moore. Now according to a report from Coming Soon, James Bond is also getting thrown into the mix. NBC has confirmed that Timothy Dalton will appear on the upcoming season of the show for a multi-episode story arc!

Dalton will be playing a mysterious stranger who has a history with Chuck’s (series star Zachary Levi) mom, played by Linda Hamilton (Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day). This marks Dalton’s first series appearance on American television since he guest-starred on “Charlie’s Angels” in 1979.

Who knew that Sarah Connor got it on with Bond back in the day? We wonder what his character will be up to?” He’s signed on for more than one episode, so maybe he has a score to settle that’s going to take some elaborate prep time to pull off?

Dalton’s been keeping himself busy lately. He recently appeared in this summer’s Toy Story 3 as Mr. Pricklepants and will co-star alongside Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in The Tourist later this year.

“Chuck” returns for its fourth season on Monday, September 20 (8-9 p.m. ET).

Timothy Dalton Joins Toy Story 3

One of the most underrated James Bonds to ever play the role, has been cast in the upcoming sequel, Toy Story 3. According to Empire, Timothy Dalton will lend his voice to a character in the CGI animated feature from Disney-Pixar. Disney president John Lasseter announced the news today at the London-based Disney Animation Showcase. What could Bond, James Bond possibly have to offer Toy Story staples like Woody and Buzz Lightyear?

According to Lasseter, Dalton will voice Mr. Pricklepants, a hedgehog toy with thespian tendencies. I literally laughed when I read that description, because in my mind you can already tell where they’re going with this character. They wouldn’t specify on whether or not Mr. Pricklepants will serve as the film’s villain, but with a name like that how could he not?

After this announcement, the audience was treated to a special viewing of a scene from the movie, which centered on the Toys and a now college age Andy.

The clip showed Andy packing from college, and emptying all his toys into a black bin bag for storage in the attic. He hesitates over Woody and Buzz, finally putting Woody in the box of things to take for college. But all the toys are panicked – especially Woody, who’s worried for his friends. When Andy is distracted by his little sister and leaves the garbage bag on the landing instead of upstairs in the attic, his mother takes it out to the kerb – and a frantic Woody has to save his friends from a rapidly approaching bin lorry.

Just reading that description made me feel old. Andy is a young adult now, and it makes us realize that 1995 really was a long time ago. That’s the thing about Disney films, they always make you remember a specific time and place from your life. For me, Toy Story represents 5th grade, and Capri Sun fruit drinks. I know it sounds weird, but it was a staple during my youth. What about yours?

Economic Downturn? Invest in Bonds!

More dependable than your 401k, this coming Friday, James Bond returns for his 23rd adventure in “Quantum of Solace”. It’s been well reviewed so far with a positive tomatometer, should lead the box office this weekend and has already broken box office records in the UK. Initially most were skeptical that Daniel Craig would prove a fitting heir to the Bond throne, but the popularity and boffo revenues from “Casino Royale” has put that skepticism to rest. However, how does Craig’s reboot of the venerable series compare to the others on an economic basis? Or to put it another way, which Bond gives more bang for the buck?

Now, everyone has their favorite Bond. Some prefer the original Connery, some the tongue in cheek Moore and many these days (my wife included) the chiseled, hard ass, Craig. But acting and looks is one thing and money another. To compare them economically I first updated the US grosses of all their films to 2008 dollars and then averaged for Connery films, Moore films, etc… Looking at things that way, the very respectable $167 MM ($179 MM in 2008 dollars) of “Casino Royale” only comes in seventh on the list behind such classics as “Goldfinger” and “Thuderball” but also such dogs as “Moonraker”. Doing the math, Connery is the champ with a per film average of $244 MM followed by Craig with $179 MM, granted for only one film. To beat Connery, QofS will have to gross $310 MM which seems highly unlikely. Check out the chart for all the Bonds’ returns.

If you are a Timothy Dalton fan, I’m very sorry.
