The top award winner at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival was the Oprah Winfrey produced Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. Precious took home the festival’s “People’s Choice Award” that Best Picture Oscar winner Slumdog Millionare earned last year. Critics have praised the movie throughout its run in various festivals and the movie is gaining major Oscar buzz.
The film’s story revolves around an illiterate girl named Precious and her struggles throughout her everyday life. The film is a brutally honest portrayal of the young woman’s perseverance over the most inhumane obstacles.

Over at The Toronto International Film Festival, they just premiered The Informant by director Steven Soderbergh starring Matt Damon and so far the reviews have been mixed. I saw the film a couple of weeks ago and thought that although Matt Damon was absolutely stellar, the film was not without its problems.
In the film, Damon stars as Mark Whiticre, an FBI informant who helped gather incriminating evident against the grain processing company back in the early nineties. We debuted the trailer a while back, and I loved every minute of it, sadly the trailer does represent the movie you will be seeing in theaters, although that’s not to say it’s not any good.

Last week we reported on the huge conflict that’s placing a dark cloud over this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Several actors, producers, and writers are protesting the event due to a spotlight series that will highlight the Israeli city of Tel Aviv. With such a negative response to the festival being put out into the media, event director Piers Handling has decided to break his silence regarding the controversy.

I would like to say that the annual Toronto International Film Festival will go off without a hitch, but I can’t. Whenever a large group of thespians are gathered, drama will surely follow. According to Reuters, several big named stars are protesting the event because of the intentional spotlight the Festival has put on the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.
