Whoa! Forget the bald bad asses and comic-book heroes, this weekend the pirates have shown who’s truly boss. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides arrived with a bang. The much anticipated Disney sequel is now the film with the highest grossing opening weekend of 2011 (a title that previously belonged to Fast Five). To our surprise, Bridesmaids came in at No. 2, and not Thor. Despite Pirates’ super box office win, Bridesmaids made a solid amount (over $20 million). Thor on the other hand, not so much. Check out the numbers in their entirety below…

After last weekend’s strong second weekend win by Thor, comes the release of the 4th Pirates Of The Caribbean film sans Kiera Knightley and Orlando Bloom. Movie studios have steered clear of opening any new releases this weekend against The Johnny Depp action adventure, while the top ten will be filled out with left overs ranging from Fast Five, Thor, and newly minted summer hit, Bridesmaids.

Based on last weekend’s success, it was obvious that Thor would, once again, be No. 1 at the box office. This weekend saw the release of two polar opposite films — Bridesmaids and Priest. Well known-funny man Judd Apatow was a part of the Bridesmaids’ crew, which stars a handful of the most popular comedic women, like its leading lady Kristen Wiig. The Universal comedy came in after Thor, grossing more than we predicted. The sci-fic action film Priest didn’t do as well as Bridesmaids – coming in at No. 4 (grossing $14.5 million). Fast Five managed to stay above Priest, and is still bringing in solid money, week after week. Check out the actual numbers below…

After last weekend solid debut, Thor will attempt to hold strong at number one while facing competition from what many are describing as the female Hangover with Bridesmaids, the horror thriller Priest, and box office hit Fast Five.

The opening weekend of Thor‘s box office performance wasn’t bad, it wasn’t super great either. Fast Five still holds the highest opening weekend of 2011. Our predictions were right on the money — Thor managed to make a $66 million debut with the help of 3-D and IMAX sales. Fast Five dropped to $32.5 million, and managed to surpass its $125 million budget (it’s total gross now is $139.8 million). Newbies Jumping the Broom and Something Borrowed came in after the big blockbusters.

Thor may be the trickiest of the big Marvel characters to adapt. Both a Norse God, and an extra-terrestrial being, Thor doesn’t have the “normal person thrust into superpowers” hook – which is both good and bad. And to that end Thor is not really an origin tale, so much as a learning experience for the main character. There’s a lot to do here, on top of director Kenneth Branagh putting a big budget fantasy movie on the shoulders of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, both actors who – at best – had some notable supporting performances previous to this. Did they succeed?

After last weekends scorching debut from Fast Five, Thor will look to capture box office glory this weekend and attempt to prove it self as a solid box office contender. Meanwhile new comedic releases such as Something Borrowed and Jumping The Broom will battle it out to round out the top 5.
The biggest question this weekend is just how big will Thor open? Or will it be another big budgeted may movie flop ala Speed Racer, Kingdom Of Heaven, and Robin Hood. Thor has garnered solid reviews which could generate a much needed jolt in terms of buzz, throw in the ever likable Natalie Portman, and moviegoers need for a summer blockbuster and Thor should be able to open solidly in the number #1 slot.

Previous to Thor, Tom Hiddleston was mostly known for his TV work, but post-Thor, he’s been working like crazy and has three more picture due out this year – all with great directors. And then there’s The Avengers, which is also on his plate. And though Chris Hemsworth may be a star in training, it’s Hiddleston who walks away with the most interesting performance in Thor – no mean feat when your surrounded with Oscar winners like Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman. We got a chance to sit with Hiddleston and talk about this film and his impressive year. Check it out… Continue Reading

Bringing the God of Thunder to the big screen was a challenging experience, and the film – which hits theaters May 6 – went through years of development. And though director Kenneth Branagh might seem an odd fit, the film’s power struggles between gods are not dissimilar from the struggles of Henry V – an adaptation that made Branagh’s directorial career. For the press conference Branagh was joined by Marvel‘s Kevin Fiege, and screenwriters Don Payne, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. Check it out…
