Benicio del Toro Unleases His Rage In The Wolfman

Oscar winner Benicio del Toro will appear on the big screen starting tomorrow in his latest flick, The Wolfman. It’s directed by Joe Johnston and is a remake of the classic 1941 original from Universal. The film sticks with the same story of a nobleman who’s bitten by a beast, which causes him to inadvertently become one himself. Del Toro had to channel a ton of emotions while in character, and the actor recently discussed how he was able to pull it off.

Rage is the one major component that has been present in every incarnation of the Wolfman mythology. When the man transforms, his mind and body are no longer his own, but belong to this animal. In the film, del Toro takes that to another level when he unknowingly begins to terrorize an English village while the full moon is out. According to Yahoo, the actor used a life changing event from his childhood to fuel his character.

When del Toro was nine years old his mother died from Hepatitis, and unable to understand his loss he became angry and withdrawn.

“Anger is not a hard emotion to get to as a male actor. Where does it come from? Life, I guess. I remember the anger I felt when my mother died of hepatitis when I was nine. It was a terrible time in my life and I still feel it. I guess it helped make me something of a rebel when I was in school. And I did get into some trouble. I didn’t get good grades, and a lot of teachers turned their backs on me.”

A loss of any relative is a painful thing to go through, but losing a parent is ten times worse. The aftermath of his mother’s death had a profound effect on him, but he was able to channel it and use it for something positive when he got older. The Wolfman is very conflicted and even though he’s a monster on the surface, he’s still a man on the inside.

The Wolfman hits theaters tomorrow on February 12, 2010.

The Wolfman: Movie Review

The Wolfman is a remake of the popular horror classic that was produced by Universal over 60 years ago. Instead of capitalizing on a more contemporary adaptation of the character the studio decided to stick with the old plot and feel of the original. This includes the overseas location and time period, accompanied by plenty of blood and gore. This film could have been an amazing revamp of its predecessor but the excessive violence and unnecessary bloodshed ruins it all.

The Plot:

Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman, returns to his family estate after his brother’s fiancee informs him of his death. It turns out that his sibling was murdered in the woods by a mysterious creature, who inflicted fatal wounds that weren’t of human origin. Against the advice of others he delves deep into his search, which sets a life changing event in motion. Throughout the film we try to figure out if it was destiny, a curse, or bad luck that leads him to his fate of becoming the Wolfman.

The Good:

Anthony Hopkins: The Oscar winning actor was the epitome of evil as Lawrence’s father. He was so emotionally detached that everytime his character appeared on screen you always wondered what was going on behind his eyes.
The Horror: This film was genuinely scary. There are a lot of jump scares, but they actually work and make you want to check your surroundings ever so often.
Editing: The editing here helped with building up tension and fear within the film. There were certain scenes that could only work with the right cuts at the right time, and they were able to pull that off.

The Bad:

The Direction: The cast of this film was great, but it didn’t seem like their talent shined through. It takes a good director to bring out the best in their actors, and that didn’t happen here. Joe Johnston had two Oscar winners, and a Golden Globe nominee, yet they all gave mediocre performances. It makes you wonder what type of direction he was giving them.
The Accents: The location of the film is supposed to be near London, yet everyone’s accents are completely different. Del Toro’s is American, which they explain in the film, but Blunt and Hopkins are another story. Both actors are British in real life, yet Blunt sounded like an American doing her best British impersonation.
The Gore: There are some extremely graphic scenes that didn’t need to be shown. Every time the Wolfman appears expect to see exposed intestines, stomachs, and plenty of heads being clawed off during your viewing.

Overall:

There are certain elements from the original Wolfman that do appear in the remake, the only problem is those similarities are overshadowed by unnecessary blood. This is not a movie for the weak at heart or those with sensitive eyes. The Wolfman is a mixture of old school Gothic horror mixed with the Saw franchise. Does that sound like a pleasant combination to you? If so, you should definitely give it a shot this weekend.

This weekend Benicio Del Toro will follow in the footsteps of a long line of actors by portraying a werewolf in a movie. The Oscar winner will star in a remake of the 1941 Universal classic, The Wolfman, a role that was originally portrayed by the legendary Lon Chaney Jr. Del Toro looks as if he was born to play the hairy creature, but he’s not the first to tackle the tortured beast. In honor of its recent popularity (thanks a lot New Moon), we want to know who you think makes the best wolfman?

Joe Johnston‘s take on the character is a throw back to the 1940′s version while the other candidates in our poll embody different versions of the wolf mythology. We’ve included the John Landis classic, An American Werewolf in London, Mike Nichols‘ Wolf, and of course, Chris Weitz‘ The Twilight Saga: New Moon. You’ll have five actors to choose from including del Toro, Chaney, David Naughton, Jack Nicholson, and Taylor Lautner. It seems weird putting Lautner in the same category with these guys, but we have to be fair.

Poll: Should Danny Elfman’s Score Be Used in The Wolfman?

The drama surrounding the Universal remake of The Wolfman refuses to go away. If it’s not the release date, it’s the director, or in this case the musical score. Over the past year, the movie has hit several stumbling blocks including the loss of its composer. Originally, Danny Elfman was on board to tackle The Wolfman‘s music, but left the project back in November. He was then replaced by Paul Haslinger, whose previous works include the Underworld series and Death Race.

Now, we’re hearing that Elfman’s score might be used in the film after all, which adds a lot of confusion considering the nearing release date. The composer is currently busy with other projects most notably Alice in Wonderland, so how will Universal pull this off? According to Cinemusic, “Haslinger is out and additional composers have been brought back in to stitch it all together using ideas from Elfman’s material.” This will be hard to accomplish since the final cut for the film could be drastically different from the one Elfman was inspired by.

Elfman’s sound is unique and like no one elses. If anyone knows how to score a Gothic-horror movie it’s him. The Wolfman hits theaters on February 12th, so the studio and director Joe Johnston don’t have much time to get this together. What do you think should happen?

The Wolfman Will Be Rated R

There has to be a conspiracy against Joe Johnston‘s The Wolfman, because everywhere you turn there’s a snag in its production. The release date, the score, and now the rating have all been tampered with. This just in, The Wolfman has officially been slapped with an R rating!

Any intention Universal had of making a decent profit with this movie has gone out the window. It was bad enough that the release date got pushed back so many times that the general population forgot it, but now an R rating will scare away any serious chance it has at being a success. The R is due to “bloody horror, violence and gore,” which means that it won’t be the film of choice when it’s released on Valentine’s weekend on February 12, 2010.

The Wolfman has been at a disadvantage since day one, and these recent developments aren’t helping. When was the last time a horror movie thrived on Valentine’s Day? Its hard to remember but even My Bloody Valentine: 3-D came out a month before the big day. That’s the problem here, Wolf Man was supposed to drop around Halloween, but instead it’s going up against an ensemble comedy actually called Valentine’s Day, that stars every actor under the sun. This movie was never given a fair shot.

International Wolfman Posters

For some odd reason Universal has decided to step up the marketing for their upcoming remake of The Wolfman. Posters have been dropping left and right out of the blue, and we have a couple more to add to the collection. Two new international one sheets have surfaced online and one of them gives us an up close and personal look at the title character.

The Wolfman is a remake of the classic horror story that’s been done over time and time again. The only thing that may give this film a little more clout is the studio behind it. Back in the 30′s and ’40′s Universal was known for producing these old school horror flicks that went on to become cult classics within the genre. For the most part, they’ve been trying to market this film in the spirit of the original 1941 production that starred Lon Chaney Jr.

On these two new posters it has the release date set as December 2, 2010 which is when the film will hit theaters overseas. The Wolfman will drop in U.S. theaters on February 10, 2010. Does that make any sense? No, it doesn’t but the date was shifted around so many times we should be thankful that it didn’t get shelved all together.

Benicio del Toro’s Wolf Man Poster

Earlier today we brought you the lovely Emily Blunt in a teaser poster for the upcoming Universal feature, The Wolf Man, now we’ve got another one courtesy of AICN. This time we stare into the eye of the beast himself, (Benicio del Toro) and it’s not pretty. If you think he looks hairy here, take a look at the rest of it.

Even though this poster is a blatant close up of the wolf himself, there’s still a lot left up to the imagination. Logically we know that Benicio del Toro is behind those eyes and underneath the make up, yet they choose to keep half of his face in shadow. Perhaps, the grand reveal is yet to come or maybe their saving it for the actual movie. That would be a throw back to old school marketing, a studio actually keeping the biggest plot point a secret until the film’s release.

It’s obvious that a film noir aesthetic is being used here, which is a great sign. Director Joe Johnston might be going for the old school look of the original movie with his interpretation of the story. The film itself will be in color but the story will be stark with many shades of gray.

The Wolf Man hits theaters early next year on February 12, 2010.

Emily Blunt Wolf Man Poster

A new poster has debuted for Universal’s remake of the classic horror film, The Wolf Man. For the most part this poor movie has been getting the raw end of the stick thanks to the constant shuffle of its release date. It looks like the studio is trying to give it some decent marketing due to the recently released trailer and photos, and now here’s another poster. It features co-star Emily Blunt and she looks terrified!

The Wolf Man is scheduled to hit theaters on February 12, 2010, and stars Benicio del Toro as the title character. Emily Blunt plays his love interest and unsuspecting object of his obsession. The film is directed by Joe Johnston and once again centers on a man cursed with the ability to turn into a werewolf when caught underneath a full moon.

In the new poster it looks as if Blunt’s character is in the wrong place at the wrong time. You don’t see too much of del Toro’s wolf version here, but you know what she’s hiding from and it’s not pretty. This would have been a great Halloween release, but unfortunately it will have to combat itself against the Valentine’s Day rush of next year. Does that make any real sense? I think not!

New Action Packed Wolf Man Trailer and Pictures

Oh Wolf Man, what will your fate be? At the moment it seems to be undetermined. People don’t know whether to love you or loath you. I guess that’s why Universal decided it’s time for a new, action-packed, sexy, trailer for Joe Johnston‘s upcoming action thriller The Wolf Man starring Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving, and Art Malik. They’ve definitely cut out the haunting, subtle feel that the first trailer had and went for a much more in your face action trailer. I’m guessing this one is aimed at all the teens out their they’re hoping to rope in.

The film was yet again pushed and will be in theaters February 12, 2010.

The Wolfman Trailer Premiere and New Photos

What a morning for trailers! The Wolfman is now online, just after the first Avatar was released. We’ve all been waiting for the first look at Joe Johnston’s film starring Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving and now it’s finally here.

A little something to take with you into the trailer…

Even a man who is pure of heart
And says his prayers by night
May become a wolf
When the wolfsbane blooms
And the autumn moon is bright.

Apparently, it’s an Old Gypsy poem that quite obviously goes with the film. Watch the trailer and check out three new pictures from the film below…

What’s so great about this trailer is the feeling that it’s old fashioned horror film mixed with modern day special effects added to it. That along side the outstanding cast gives me high hopes for the film.

New Wolf Man Photos

Even though its release date has been pushed back several times, the updated Wolf Man film continues to put out promotional material. Over at Bloody Disgusting, a few new photos have been released and they feature stars Benicio del Toro and Emily Blunt in action. They mostly show del Toro in his “man state” as opposed to his werewolf counterpart, but it’s better than nothing.

This doesn’t look that bad, why is Universal treating it like an unwanted stepchild? When I initially heard they were remaking the film, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical. But when the cast came up, there was no doubt in my mind that this could turn out decent. Wolf Man will be released next year on February 12th, and is directed by Joe Johnston. Will they move the date again, I hope not.

Wolf Man Release Date Pushed Back Again!

Is the modern day remake of the Wolf Man horror classic cursed? How much can this poor film take? According to several media outlets including Variety, the film has been pushed back for not the second, not the third, but the fourth time! It won’t be released this year at all, and has been bumped to 2010 instead. Universal Pictures have shifted it’s release from later this fall to early next year, where it will compete with films of a more romantic caliber.

Wolf Man was originally planned for a release on Feb. 13 , then it changed to April 3, which morphed to Nov. 6, and now it’s been kicked out of 2010 all together. Similar to it’s original release date the film will hit theaters on February 12 of next year. It will be competing against the likes of New Line’s romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, the Summit drama Remember Me, with Robert Pattinson (no surprise there) toplining, and Disney’s 3-D re-release of Beauty and the Beast. One of the marketing execs over at Universal stresses that this was a strategic move on the studios part.

“We have seen just how enormous first quarter movies can be,” said Adam Fogelson, president of marketing and distribution for U, citing the $215 million that studios generated on the February weekend this year, versus the $136 million that pics earned on the November date last year.

I would have totally bought that if it wasn’t for the fact that Wolf Man’s very first release date was in the first quarter! Why did they move it four times, only to have it end up in the same place over a year later? I actually want to see this movie, but the suspicious maneuvers Universal have been pulling is making me doubt it’s quality. I’m sorry to say, even though I’m a fan of old school horror, I’m an even bigger fan of my childhood so during that weekend I will be checking out Beauty and the Beast. Sorry, guys.
