Over the weekend, Universal decided to release the first official photos from their upcoming prequel to The Thing. The movie has had many incarnations in the past with the most notable being the 1982 version that starred Kurt Russell. The film will feature a slew of new faces as well as some old ones such as Joel Edgerton, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, and “Lost” alum Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. If we have to endure another remake of the horror/sci-fi classic The Thing at least we get to watch someone talented like Joel Edgerton bring it to life. The native Australian actor plays the lead in the upcoming movie that will have him tackling the mysterious creature from another world.

There’s been some serious movement on the production front of Universal’s remake of The Thing. According to THR, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton have been cast as the two leads. It’s been over 25 years since we’ve seen this property on the big screen, with the last being directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell. Oh, how things have changed…

Sadly, one of my favorite old horror movies The Thing looks like it’s on it’s way into production as early as January of 2010. The writer of the remake, Eric Heisserer, recently spoke with BloodyDisgusting about his current rewrite of Ronald D. Moore’s version of the screenplay, which isn’t even based off of Charles Lederer‘s 1951 version (in my opinion, the best version). It seems that people only remember the 1982 Kurt Russell version(above) of the film and are completely forget about the 50′s take. But oh well.

Remakes, remakes, remakes!! According to Variety, another version of the horror classic The Thing is in the works. There have already been two previous versions of the film, based off of the John W. Campbell short story, “Who Goes There.” In 1951 Howard Hawks directed The Thing From Another World, and in 1982 John Carpenter came out with his version simply entitled, The Thing. This next revamp will have a script written by Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ron Moore, and will be directed by Matthijis Van Heijningen.

In the first Horror 101 post I listed ten films the average horror fan may not have seen but should. In this “lesson” I’ll discuss writer HP Lovecraft.
What does a horror writer from the 20′s and 30′s have to do with horror films today? In the case of Lovecraft, a lot. I have not written much about his life and works here, that’s what Wikipedia is for. He wrote about horrific creatures/gods/aliens which often were insane…. or worse.
His works, primarily short stories with some novellas, have inspired many films. Some are direct adaptations such as “Re-Animator,” “Die, Monster, Die!” and a couple of episodes of the 1970s television show, “Night Gallery.” An interesting low-budget Lovecraft adaptation recently released is “The Call of Cthulhu,” A modern movie, but shot as a silent film, it’s worth watching as an oddball entry. Check out a clip below…
