Johnny Depp and Rob Marshall are serious about remaking The Thin Man, and it appears nothing will stop them. After hiring Jerry Stahl to pen the script, Variety says they’ve now turned to David Koepp to finish it. Koepp – having penned Steven Spielberg‘s Jurassic Park and Brian De Palma’s Carlito’s Way – has been been working as a go-to “closer” for a while, polishing or finishing drafts of recent Spielberg films like War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and recently did work on the troubled Men in Black III.

The Thin Man series, created by Dashiell Hammett, is best known from the six films starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. The duo star as detectives Nick and Nora Charles, who spend as much time fighting crime as fighting hangovers. They are very wet movies, and the charm of the series is that their relationship is strong, but they drink to excess. Such may have been more charming in the 1930′s, but Johnny Depp has been shepherding a remake for his current Pirates of the Carribbean director Rob Marshall, and now (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter) the script is being worked on by Jerry Stahl.

Johnny Depp’s schedule keeps growing, growing, and growing. According to Vulture, the actor has his eye on a remake of The Thin Man, the first of many films adapted from the Dashiell Hammett novel on the same name. Depp must be having a ball working with Rob Marshall on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides, because he wants him to direct The Thin Man as well.
