The number one movie in America for two straight weeks has been the David Fincher-Aaron Sorkin collaboration The Social Network. The film chronicles the rise of the biggest social networking site in the world (Facebook) and the drama surrounding its founders, Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin. The film consists of a largely male cast and features a few supporting female roles but other than that it’s mostly a boys club. This is an issue that stuck a chord with many people, who have labeled the film misogynistic. Well, screenwriter Sorkin has heard your cries and he’s decided to respond to one comment in particular…

Weekend Box Office: Mark Zuckerberg Beats Stone, Heigel, Secretariat

Well well well, it looks like the nerd is the big boy on campus, well his movie anyway. The Social Network is at the top of the charts for the second week in a row, and with good reason (it’s so good). Katherine Heigl‘s new romantic comedy couldn’t even top it! Everything else seems just about right except for — oh, Oliver Stone‘s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps which plummeted down to number seven after being at the top of the list last two weeks. That’s going to hurt.

There are a bunch of newbies on the list that are all doing just fine for themselves. Secretariat and My Soul to Take, both attract a very specific crowd, managed to come up in the top five spots, along with Ben Affleck‘s The Town which finally got a wider release.

Weekend Box Office: Fincher Tops the Charts with The Social Network!

The Social Network The Gangs All Here 29 9 10 kc Weekend Box Office: Fincher Tops the Charts with The Social Network!

The Social Network for the win! I guess it’s not really a surprise that making a film about one of the most popular things on the internet (which is saying a lot) makes for a popular movie. That coupled with the fact that you have David Fincher behind it who, although not always a box office champ, has continued to make one solid film after another.

Other new comers like Case 39, the long awaited Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper horror basically tanked and Let Me In, Matt Reeves (read interview) remake of Let the Right One In seems to only be coming in slightly above that. Hopefully with a wider release we’ll see Let Me In take off – it deserves to! And hell the bothered with the whole remake for everyone who was scared of subtitles, you might as well go and see it now that you don’t have to read!

Jesse Eisenberg The Social Network 31 8 10 kc Interview: Jesse Eisenberg for The Social Network

Playing the lead character in The Social Network may be the role of a lifetime for Jesse Eisenberg. He portrays Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of the biggest website on the planet, Facebook. He created it in his dorm room at Harvard University back in 2003 and within 7 years it’s amassed a value of 25 billion dollars. But like the tag line for the film says, you don’t make 500 million friends without making a few enemies.

Even though Eisenberg never had the opportunity to speak to the real Zuckerberg about his experiences (he says the film is fiction and refused to cooperate) surrounding the site’s creation, he did his homework. He researched him and throughout the film’s production, he developed a deep affection for the man. At the New York press day for The Social Network, he revealed what he would say to Zuckerberg if given the opportunity, and he cleared up any rumors regarding David Fincher’s meticulous directing style (25, 45, 99 takes for scenes?!). The Social Network Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg 29 9 10 kc Interview: Justin Timberlake for The Social Network

Over the past few years singer-turned-actor Justin Timberlake has been trying to make a name for himself in front of the camera. He hasn’t sang or danced in a while because he’s been too busy perfecting his craft as a thespian. Who better to learn from than the notoriously meticulous director David Fincher? This month Timberlake appears in his biopic The Social Network, which covers the controversial inception of Facebook.

In the film, Timberlake plays Sean Parker, the notorious founder of Napster, who has a substance abuse problem and a habit of hanging around impressionable teens. The actor has charisma and presence but he needed more to carry a role as specific as Parker. When Timberlake attended the New York Press Day for The Social Network he spoke about the differences between his singing career and acting, his working relationship with Fincher, and he revealed whether or not he actually uses the infamous Facebook himself…

David Fincher Dissects Society: The Social Network, Fight Club, Zodiac…

fincherjcosep27 David Fincher Dissects Society: The Social Network, Fight Club, Zodiac...

On Friday, October 1st, The Social Network, David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin’s take on the invention of Facebook, will be released to audiences across the country. Take a look at that title. There’s a reason why this film isn’t called Facebook, and it’s not simply to avoid lawsuits from the site’s creator, Mark Zuckerberg.

Then again, why not go with The Accidental Billionaires, the title of the non-fiction book from which the screenplay was adapted? No, if we know David Fincher, he’s getting at something here. Some says he’s the best director of his generation, others write him off as someone who replaces substance with style, but there’s no denying that his best films are dulled by a strong vision. He’s not content to just tell the story that is on the surface; he needs to dig down and see how he can find out how he can relate his material to our society today.

Let’s take a look at some of his more noteworthy accomplishments and try to see what he’s had to say.

aaron sorkin 28 9 10 kc Interview: Aaron Sorkin for The Social Network

Acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin just tackled his most contemporary project to date with David Fincher’s The Social Network. It’s an adaptation of the book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal that exposes the behind the scenes drama that surrounds the site’s creation. Once the story was brought to Sorkin’s attention, he met up with producer Scott Rudin, and Fincher and the rest is Social Network history.

Over the weekend, Sorkin and several members of the cast attended the film’s press day in New York City. The writer was very open about his interpretation of the story, and the heavy research that went into it. This isn’t a film of fiction, it’s based on concrete material that was revealed via anonymous sources. Sorkin discussed the fast shooting process for the film, and his working relationship with Fincher. Most importantly, he spoke about the film’s intent, which is not to paint the picture of a bad guy or a good guy, it’s to tell a story from every point of view…
