Based on the recently published, national bestseller by the troublesome Dr. Gonzo (Hunter S. Thompson) Bruce Robinson presents a disappointing adaptation of The Rum Diary starring Johnny Depp, Richard Jenkins and Aaron Eckhart. I would’ve included Amber Heard in the line-up but her performance is so abominable that I’ve deemed her unworthy of sharing a sentence with the aforementioned actors.

The biggest question of the weekend is this: why did Paramount, which won last weekend with Paranormal Activity 3, bump up Puss in Boots to the first week of October when the first week of November has become the official start of the fall season? It should handily win the weekend over some lesser competitors – like Anonymous, The Rum Diary, and In Time – but are they following the formula of Fast Five and getting an early jump on the competition, or do they think they have a weak sister?

By now you know that Johnny Depp is starring in The Rum Diary as Paul Kemp, a Hunter S. Thompson-esque character. Depp is no stranger to the Gonzo journalist. In 1998, he played Thompson in Terry Gilliam‘s adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The Rum Diary also features Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Richard Jerkins and Giovanni Ribisi, but, of course, the big draw is Depp. Shockingly enough, the big star has been left off the movie poster. Risky. You can check out the poster below, and see for yourself. I’m totally digging the bottles of rum.

Johnny Depp played Dr. Hunter S. Thompson for Terry Gilliam, and has become the custodian for the good doctor’s cinematic estate. So when The Rum Diary came into being, Depp playing another ur-Thompson in Paul Kemp was likely the only way the film could be made. And here’s a trailer for the film, which is set to open October 28, and also features Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart and Giovanni Ribisi. Check it out.

Is it just me or has Johnny Depp been looking the same since 1990? Whatever he’s using to keep his youthful glow needs to be passed on to a few other actors because this man knows how to age. This revelation came to me when the first photos from his upcoming film The Rum Diary surfaced online. They both feature Depp, and even though he recently turned 47 he looks better than ever!

Fox may have pulled the plug on the TV series Prison Break, but that’s not stopping co-star Amaury Nolasco from getting more work. According to THR, the actor just landed a role alongside Johnny Depp in the drama The Rum Diary. The film started production over a week ago, and apparently they’re still casting. That always throws me for a loop. You’d think they’d be done with this pre-production stuff once the cameras start rolling.
Learn more about Nolasco’s role after the jump.

Two more stars will participate in the big screen adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s Rum Diary. As we already reported Johnny Depp (Paul Kemp)and Amber Heard have signed on to co-star in the film, and now an Oscar nominee and Batman villain will soon follow. According to THR, Richard Jenkins has signed on to star in Diary as Lotterman,”the man who oversees the rundown newspaper where Kemp works.” On the other hand, Aaron Eckhart is close to finalizing a deal to star opposite Depp as the competition for Heard’s affection.

Apparently, Johnny Depp has a monopoly on Hollywood’s Hunter S. Thompson projects. With Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas long under his belt, it was recently announced that Depp would be cast again as a Thompson-based character, Paul Kemp, in Bruce Robinson’s film rendition of the famous journalist’s novel, The Rum Diary.
A casting report that was made public last month indicated that filmmakers were still searching for a leading lady to play Kemp’s romantic interest, Chenault, but word was just confirmed that Amber Heard (you know, the almost-always-naked girl from The Informers) will fill the role.
