Wow, it is a very weak week here in the DVD release land. You have your pick of Anthony Hopkins as a priest fighting the devil, Jason Statham in an action movie that isn’t a Transporter or Crank sequel or Minka Kelly having to fend off Leighton Meester.
Not sure which movies those are? I don’t blame you, I forgot they’d all been released too. These films are The Rite, The Mechanic and The Roommate, respectively.
Yeah. Still a blank. Luckily, TV on DVD is coming up big with the second box set of an acclaimed documentary series. All that, plus a movie that actually seems worse than the three features.

With the final results in, this weekend’s top box office winner was the Anthony Hopkins horror/thriller The Rite which came in at #1, while the Ashton Kutcher/Natalie Portman romantic comedy No String’s Attached held strong at#2 as both films came in right along with our predictions.
The rest of the top five saw a neck-to neck race as Jason Statham’s The Mechanic opened with double digit grosses ,Seth Rogan’s The Green Hornet held strong as both films entered at the # 3/4 spot respectively coming in a bit above our own predictions, while The King’s Speech surged past last weekend gross due to a theater expansion, but entered at the #5 spot coming a bit behind our own predictions.

Yet another slow January weekend at the box office — even for a religious thrilled. The Rite [review] took the top spot this weekend, making a weak debut of $15 million. Though the film was never a big budget project, when compared to The Last Exorcism [review] (another movie about religious characters and a devil-possessed woman) which opened at No. 2 in August of 2010 and to the amount of $20.3 million — one can be sure that studios were hoping for more. Another new movie this weekend was The Mechanic, the CBS production starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster – odd combo, odd time of year for a thriller, and it seems like some people were in the mood for it, but not many. The movie made the top three, following No Strings Attached [movie review].
Hopefully movie-lovers will return to the movies, once the awards season overdrive is over. Check out the weekend box office below…

The duo are cast as an unlikely pair: the believer and the doubter, and as viewers we watch them fight a battle of spiritual warfare, while dealing with their own personal demons.

Two of the scariest things in life have come together, Anthony Hopkins and the Catholic church… performing exorcisms on the devil. Warner Brothers has just released the latest poster for The Rite, a film that is supposedly based off true events about the devil making his way back to earth. Fun times!
The film follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak, played by first time feature actor Colin O’Donoghue, who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the number one place in the world to learn about the devil — the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith.

Anthony Hopkins has signed on for a new gig and it’s a supernatural thriller called The Rite. The film is based on a novel by American author Matt Baglio, which drew from real life events.
