We watch a lot of movie trailers here at ScreenCrave, and, as we inch closer to summer with its ever-increasing torrent of new films, we’re seeing more and more previews with each passing day. As we do so, we can’t help but notice some similarities, repetitions, and clichés among them. Here at Trailer Park, we’ll be offering a rundown of those clichés, where they come from, and which trailers share them. For our first installment, we’ll be breaking down one of summer’s most ever-present previews: The Chick Flick Movie Trailer.

This is the general reaction after watching chick flick trailers: “Oh no, not another boring formulaic chick flick!”  At this point, women must hate chick flicks as much as men do. Women, no matter how successful, always have to be shown being the biggest dummies about relationships. Chick flicks are loaded with clichés of makeover montages, gay friends, butt jokes, etc. We don’t really need to watch the actual movie at this point because the trailer shows us that we’ve seen this movie before, just with different faces (and sometimes the same faces). Here’s a list of 10 Clichés we see in Chick Flick Movie Trailers.

10. Makeover Montage

Used in: 13 Going On 30 (2004), The Princess Diaries (2001), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), The House Bunny (2008), Clueless (1995), The Clique (2008), Easy A (2010)

The movie makeover montage is still a living and breathing cliché. I’ll admit that’s it’s always fun to see someone go from ugly duckling to beautiful swan, but it’s tired. The makeover montage needs to be reinvented because it’s always done in the same manner and to the same nerdy, dull looking character.

9. Jokes About Being Single

Used In: Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), 27 Dresses (2007), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), The First Wives Club (1996), He’s Just Not That Into You (2010), Bridesmaids (2011), How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)

It doesn’t matter if you own your own business or graduated from law school, if you’re single, the jokes will keep on coming. Take the trailer for Bridesmaids, as good as the movie may be, the trailer exhausts the fact that Kristen Wigg‘s characters is such a loser because she’s single.

8. Supportive Gay Friends

Used in: He’s Just Not That Into You (2010), Mean Girls (2004), Easy A (2010), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1994), Sex and the City 2 (2010)

From Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding to Emma Stone in Easy A, most chick flicks include a gay best friend. What’s unfortunate is that they are usually flat, secondary characters who’ve taken over the role of the sassy or quirky best friend.

7. Butt Jokes

Used in: Sleepless In Seattle (1993), Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen (2004), She’s The Man (2006), Thelma And Louise (2006)

Oh, women and their butt jokes. No, men aren’t the only ones who do it, ladies love to stare right back and chick flick trailers love to showcase a nice round butt with a closeup.

6. Single & Happy

Used in: Happy-Go-Lucky (2000), 27 Dresses (2007), Never Been Kissed (2008), The Holiday (1996)

Most chick flick trailers start out by letting us know that the female protagonist is both single and happy. The Happy-Go-Lucky trailer is a perfect example of this because we see Poppy cheerful at work and very optimistic about life, but then she’s asked about her love life. The idea rapidly starts to build in our heads that Poppy can’t really be happy because she’s a single girl.

5. Sing-Along (And Into Combs)

Used In: My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), The First Wives Club (1996), Riding In Cars With Boys (2001), 13 Going On 30 (2004), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), Stepmom (1998), Mama Mia! (2008)

Sometimes the singing involves random objects like combs and home telephones, but mostly women are just shown singing. A moment like this is immediately a turn off because it’s been used so many times.

4. Pratfalls & Other Clumsy Things

Used In: In Her Shoes (2005), (2003), The First Wives Club (1996), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1996), The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (2005), Twilight (2008), The Princess Diaries (2001), Whip It! (2009)

It wouldn’t be a chick flick without chicks falling, now would it? Everyone knows that chick flicks are formulaic and insanely similar these days, but why doesn’t anyone reinvent the genre or at least the trailer? We always see at least one moment of women falling off a trees, running into windows or falling into a trashcan. I don’t remember Audrey Hepburn falling in Breakfast At Tiffany’s or Sharon Tate getting hit in Valley of the Dolls (and she was a dummy).

3. Elderly Folks Saying Inappropriate Things

Used In: Easy A (2010), 50 First Dates (2004), The Proposal (2009), 27 Dresses (2007)

Old folks are used to fill in those inappropriate remarks that peer friends wouldn’t dare say, like telling you your boobs are too small or your butt is too big. They also love sharing stories about their youth, letting you know that they were once young, wild and free.

2. Getting Drunk

Used In: It’s Complicated (2009), The First Wives Club (1996), 27 Dresses (2007), The Accidental Husband (2008), Labor Pains (2009), 13 Going On 30 (2004)

The misery of being single makes women get drunk and act like fools (because women only get drunk when they’re depressed… not!). In trailers, we’re shown a glimpse of women bonding with their friends over cocktails, acting all crazy and obsessing about their ex-husbands/boyfriends. Once we see the actual movie, we see that these women are a lot more than just drunken dummies, but in the trailer this is what is chosen to be shown.

1. Too Sexy For A Shirt

Used In: She’s The Man (2006), The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005), The Proposal (2009), Twilight: New Moon (2009), Love Wedding Marriage (2011), Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011)

I don’t know about you, but I seldom run into shirtless men (maybe at the gym or the beach). Chick flicks, however, make it seem like women are living in a universe where men are always walking around shirtless, and they’re sort of idiots about it. It’s like their brain stops working because a six pack is in front of them.

Two ends of the spectrum for DVD releases this week. One of the mega-half-assed-hits of the year The Proposal prematurely comes to DVD and the most puzzling bomb of the year (only a “bomb” because it should have made more than Wolverine and Transformers combined, and yet it didn’t make half as much in total as either blockbuster did opening night), Drag Me To Hell, joins it in silver-disked glory.

Also, just a smattering of TV on DVD, a newly packaged Oliver Stone classic and the three worst DVD’s of the week!

The Proposal

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Sandra Bullock

There’s just no stopping Sandy B.  After a two-year hiatus from pretty much anything resembling fame, she stormed back this year to a nearly $200 million megahit that made “surefire box office” fare like Angels & Demons and Terminator look like September releases.

Seems Bullock may be one of the few remaining bankable stars – the female Will Smith perhaps?  How else to explain the unbridled success of a film promoted with a trailer whose best joke was, “It’s the morning”?

Not that they need any more money, but now you can buy this hit on DVD.

Drag Me to Hell

It’s very strange. Every week in the spring there seems to be the same horror movie released in theaters. They always have teens, they always have a bad title, and the trailer always looks horrible. Not only that, they’re always universally panned by reviewers and often by audience who are disappointed more often than not. Despite all this, these movies always make money. Sometimes into the upper realm of eight figures.

Then, in May, a movie comes out with a dynamite trailer and better young pretty actors than we normally see. It’s touted as “From the Director of Spider-Man” and gets universally great reviews. A surefire hit right? After all, all the bad movies make money, so why not the good one?

Of course, like all potentially sure things, it bombs. Which, means you have to buy it on DVD for anybody to make money. So sad.

TV ON DVD

“Futurama” – Complete Series

This could be the most in-retrospect overrated series of all time.  It’s hard to walk fifteen feet on the Internet without happening upon a message board lamenting its cancellation or discussing how it was the most brilliant series ever to series.

Problem is, this was not anywhere close to the talk at the time of its premiere.  Pretty much, the only response to this show was, “It’s okay, but it’s not as good as ‘The Simpsons’.”  Despite that, a few timely Adult Swim reruns, and it’s the gold standard by which we measure all humor in the world.

Needless to say, there’s going to be a huge run on this 18-disc collection.

SPECIAL EDITION OF THE WEEK

Natural Born Killers – Unrated Director’s Cut

After seeing Woody Harrelson as a funny/lovable killer in Zombieland it may just be time to see him as a real/scary killer.  Luckily, Natural Born Killers is on DVD in a new two-disc set for just that purpose.

This is the unrated director’s cut (not sure what more mania could be inflicted, seemed like the film reached its quotient quite nicely) but expect as much gore as you can possibly handle alongside these extras.

Who would have thought that Sandra Bullock still had that much pull at the box office? Maybe it’s Ryan Reynolds charisma that wrangled up the viewers? Whatever the case, The Proposal beat out the competition this weekend and nearly made back it’s entire budget in three days. I hope this doesn’t mean any kind of a sequel (please no!).

Year One on the other hand wasn’t so lucky. Not only did The Proposal kick it’s ass, but The Hangover and Up gave it a little kick while it was down.

Check out Star Trek just hanging out at #7. After ALL the other films have come and gone, it’s still there, proving that you can do all the marketing you want, but it’s quality that keeps a film in the theaters. It may not have had the greatest opening weekend, but it has definitely proved itself by staying on the charts for it’s 7th week in a row.

My guess is that The Proposal and Year One will fall off the charts, and The Hangover and Up will continue their reign of the good and evil must-see-comedy-duo.

• Brakes have been placed on Steven Soderbergh’s new movie about the career of former baseball phenom Billy Beane, titled Moneyball and starring Brad Pitt. According to Variety, Columbia Pictures had a change of heart after company topper Amy Pascal read the final script and didn’t like the new direction the filmmaker was going in. Soderbergh planned to use real former baseball players, Scott Hatteberg and David Justice in the movie. (Variety)

• Ms. Romantic Comedy is back! Sandra Bullock’s new movie, The Proposal opened at number one. It was Bullocks best opening ever with The Proposal grossing an estimated $34.1 million, proving the superstar still has what it takes to pull it off. The movie, produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, cost just $40 million to make. That’s a good investment if you ask me. (comingsoon)

• Talking about Kurtzman and Orci. Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are talking about the sequel. According to /Film, the two are debating which direction to go with the new movie and whether or not there should be a theme/storyline connecting the sequel with the third (yes, there will be more to come) installment. Read the interview with full details.  (/Film)
• Rumor has it that Warner Bros. is in the talks to re-make the 1985 popular movie, Teen Wolf.  The original starring Michael J. Fox was about a guy in high school who discovers the werewolf within. No one is attached the the project as of yet. (firstshowing)
• “Dancing with the Stars” dancer and country singer Julianne Hough has been cast in the lead female role in Paramount’s remake of Footloose. She will be starring opposite Chace Crawford. Sorry all you Zac Efron fans! He’s really not doing the film! (comingsoon)

Sandra Bullock is back to her old winning ways playing the pushy boss Margaret Tate in Anne Fletcher’s romantic comedy, The Proposal, with funny man Ryan Reynolds. Watch at your own risk. The other big movie opening this week is Harold Ramis’ Year One starring Jack Black and Michael Cera. I would hate to be the big comedy movie that opens right after The Hangover but hopefully these two films can pull in some audiences. And if the names Woody Allen and Larry David mean anything to you, you should go see Allen’s new one starring David called Whatever Works. After a two-year hiatus, Sandra Bullock is back in romantic comedy The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson and best of all, forever Golden Girl in my heart, Betty White. Sadly, the tagline “Here Comes the Bribe” is the most clever thing to do with this movie. Aside from a handful of laugh out loud moments and the scenery, The Proposal is chock full of enough clichés that even the romantic comedy aficionado will be screaming “oh come on!”

The Plot:

Margaret (Bullock), a prominent and constantly PMSing New York book editor who forces her assistant Andrew Paxton (Reynolds) into marrying her, lest she face deportation back to her native Canada. He begrudgingly agrees and in an effort to avoid speculation from a nosy INS agent, they set off to Andrew’s hometown of Sitka, Alaska to meet his parents (Steenburgen and Nelson) and his quirky grandmother (White). Soon city girl Margaret, finds herself in all sorts of unfamiliar situations in the backdrop of Andrew’s scenic small town of Sitka, Alaska.

The Good:

• Ryan Reynolds - Though Sandra Bullock portrays snarky Margaret quite well, it’s Ryan Reynolds’ that shines with his stoic looks, great line delivery and interaction with other characters. When Margaret comments on his choice of drink, he replies “It’s like Christmas in a cup!” That line could fall flat for others, but Reynolds’ facial expressions and predicaments make him very believable and entertaining.
• Betty White - If there’s one reason you should go see The Proposal it’s the magnificence that is Betty White. With hilarious lines like “Do you prefer to be called Margaret or Satin’s mistress?”, and her pop culture appeal and antics, this scene stealer will be the cause of most of your laugh out loud moments and she’ll make you miss your grandmother.
• Scenery – The picturesque mountains, trees and lakes will make you want to head out on the first plane to Alaska, until you find out that they actually shot the film in Rockport, Massachusetts. Either way, one look at the wide angle shots of the town, along with the glorious Paxton house that sits on a hill and you’ll be itching for a nature-themed vacation.
• Laugh Out Loud Moments -In one scene Margaret lands on Andrew while she’s trying to make her way out of the bathroom after an encounter with the family puppy – a scene that would have been funny on its own, but brings the laughs more so as both of them are stark naked. In another memorable moment, Margaret improvises the best version of “Get Low” by Lil’ John and the Eastside Boys that has eve been captured on film. What can I say, it’s stupid, but I laughed!

The Bad:

• Lack of Chemistry – Though the genre suggests that The Proposal is a romantic comedy, I frankly found nothing romantic about it. Bullock and Reynolds are great in their roles and their snippy interactions with each other can be appreciated, however even that needed to be counterbalanced with some chemistry and sexual tension. The film needed more awkward romantic interactions that would have broken up the comedy and provided the audience with at least a good make out scene to indulge in.
• Clichés Galore – From the addition of the cute furry puppy to wreak innocent havoc, to Andrew’s tense relationship with his father and Margaret and Andrew’s uncomfortable situation that must be kept secret from family and friends, The Proposal draws material in many ways from its romantic comedy predecessors like Meet the Parents and The Wedding Date. It’s a formula that works and I don’t know why I expected anything more, but it was too hard to get past the overdone plot lines for me to enjoy the film.

Overall:

If you’re looking for an easy laugh, The Proposal is right for you, but don’t expect anything new or original in this 107-minute distraction from reality. If you’re looking for eye candy, this film will also satisfy you – there’s no need to state the appeal Ryan Reynolds holds, but at 45, Sandra Bullock looks amazing whether she’s in New York City or Alaska.

This weekend will again be all laughs; There is not one, but two major comedies hitting the theaters, now the only question left for you to answer is which type of comedy do you prefer? Romance or slap-stick? The Proposal and Year One will be battling it out at the box office this weekend, but who will be the winner?

Let’s take a look at the stats and our pick below…

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds star in Anne Fletcher‘s romantic comedy The Proposal, a film about a pushy boss (Bullock) who forces her assistant (Reynolds) to marry her in order to keep her residency in the US. While romantic comedies seem to flood the theaters nowadays, Year One seems to be more of a one-of-a-kind film.

In Year One, Michael Cera and Jack Black play two cavemen who set out on an adventure after their tribe decides to throw out Black’s character. Aside from The Monty Python, we rarely see filmmakers making comedies set in biblical times, most likely because people are a bit sensitive about the subject. The film seems to mock bible characters such as Cain, Abel, Isaac, and more. Will US (aka Puritan) audiences be okay with that? Hopefully with a director like Harold Ramis he’ll be able to use satire in a positive way.

Ramis‘ last gig as director was his 2005 comedy-drama The Ice Harvest. While the film wasn’t a total success ranking at number 10 and making $3,740,799 on opening weekend and $10,156,968 worldwide, he has a lot more pull on this film. With box office champ, Judd Apatow producing the film, it is in an entirely different league. Both Michael Cera and Jack Black have pulled in big numbers before. Black was part of one of the highest grossing comedies ever, Tropic Thunder which made $188,072,649 worldwide.

That being said, Anne Fletcher‘s last film 27 dresses (another romantic comedy) was incredibly well received by audiences. It ranked at number 2 and made $23,007,725 on opening weekend and $160,259,319 worldwide. If The Proposal is anything like 27 Dresses (presumably about forcing love unto two humans who dislike each other) then we should expect some similar numbers. And leading lady Sandra Bullock is nothing to scoff at. In the past, she’s pulled in mega-numbers, although her last film Premonition wasn’t as hot. It ranked at number 3 on opening weekend making $17,558,689 and grossing at $84,146,832 worldwide. Ryan Reynolds has just come off the Wolverine train, where many people said that he was the best thing in it. In fact, his role was so popular, he got his own Deadpool spin-off.

You have two possible hit comedies this weekend, both by directors with questionable backgrounds, but with strong casts and great backing. So what will it be? Another night down the lane of comedy and romance or a wacky night in the land before cellphones and e-mail? Personally I’ll take the latter. Although all signs point to The Proposal.
