Staying in the same spirit as the Academy Awards, The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation announced their winners for the worst films of 2010. The top honor went to M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, which was critically panned and hated by fanboys alike. The story was horrible, the acting was terrible, and the 3D was horrendous. New DVD Releases: A Christmas Carol, The Kids Are All Right, The Last Airbender

Here’s the bad news: There is absolutely no TV on DVD being released this week. None whatsoever. Well, at least none of note (something tells me Season 5 of Perry Mason doesn’t really resonate with the Internet crowd) so there will be no section on the small screen for maybe the first time in the history of this column.

The good news: There is a TON of new feature films being released this week. Everything you could want from indie critical darling of The Kids Are All Right to the disappointing “3-D” blockbuster attempt of The Last Airbender and all points in between.

So we’re blowing up the format this week with a blurb about the eight feature films being released this week. And, don’t worry, we didn’t forget about informing you of that one little nugget of DVD badness either.

A Christmas Carol

I want my Robert Zemeckis back! I want the return of the filmmaker who gave us Contact, Forrest Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and the Back to the Future films. Heck, I’ll even take the guy who gave us Cast Away. Anything but this graphic-over-live action nonsense that makes cold movies devoid of a connection.

And it’s so incredibly frustrating that he was seduced by this. Zemeckis was able to churn out film after film that captured the imagination in the way that his CGI stuff tries to do but can’t. It’s like he created that world with real people to extent he had to show what was inside his mind and didn’t realize it was there all along.

So please, Roger. Tell me that your Yellow Submarine remake is just a Wikipedia lie and you’ll return to your brilliant filmmaking within the year.

The Last Airbender

I feel a personal betrayal with this film because I’ve always been an M. Night Shyamalan apologist. More than that – probably his most rampant supporter.

In fact, if you’ve had the misfortune of being within earshot of me over the last decade you’ve probably heard this escape my lips:

“He’s the next Alfred Hitchcock!”
“He’s the best storyteller, he just doesn’t tell the best stories.”
“I’m serious. He’s the best director alive. If he stops writing movies for himself the quality of his films would prove that.”

Then The Last Airbender happened, and, well, I’ve kind of stopped apologizing for Mr. Shyamalan now.

The Kids Are All Right

For the first time in maybe the history of film, the Best Actress Oscar race is absolutely loaded. Normally, it’s the easiest category to predict as we struggle to scrape up five good roles for women. Let alone performances.

This year, it won’t be the case and that happy glut is encapsulated in this film: It has two likely nominees. Two! How exciting that we’re finally getting so many good roles that we may actually see vote splitting happen in this category and super-buzzed-about performances like Gwyneth Paltrow in Country Strong and Anne Hathaway in Love and Other Drugs may find themselves without room.

Yes the Kids, and the roles for women, finally appear to be all right.

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

I was at a Dodger’s game this summer and they have a deal with Warner Brothers where they put a trailer up on the jumbotron in-between one of the innings.

Sitting in front of us was a father of three who was kind enough to bring his three young children for a day at the ballpark. He seemed to be enjoying himself until, before the fifth inning, this trailer came on the Jumbotron.

His children shouted in delight, “Cats and Dogs! Cats and Dogs!” He had a look failure and resignation. Failure in that it seemed he’d been trying to hide the fact that this movie existed and resignation that he’d soon have to waste about 50 bucks and two hours watching talking felines and canines.

Best Worst Movie

Here’s my problem with a certain type of people. I don’t know exactly how to described them, but I’m sure after this paragraph a light will go off in your head.

This is a person who has never seen an episode of “Breaking Bad”, denounces television for all its evils, yet never misses an episode of “The Real Housewives of Wherever” because it’s just such a train-wreck. This is the person who is an insufferable music snob yet blasts the most disgustingly rudimentary hip-hop whenever you get in the car. And as it relates to this, this is the person who insists on having a DVD collection filled with films like Bubble Boy and Troll 2 because somehow, in their mind, it makes them more of a connoisseur to enjoy crap rather than seek quality.

And that’s my issue – it’s not a badge of honor to avoid most of one medium and just watch the crappy portion. It’s stupid and it’s ignorant and documentaries like this only contribute to that philosophy that allows the selectively crappy consumer to feel entitled.

The Extra Man

All right, I’ve run out of blurb steam. All I know is that I see just about everything with Kevin Kline (I still consider his work in A Fish Called Wanda as the finest film performance of all time) and when I saw this on the list of releases this week I had to think long and hard as to whether or not it was a straight-to-DVD release.

Scott Pilgrim vs Avatar: The Last Airbender

It’s no secret that M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender was horrendous. The film didn’t exactly catch the essence of the series from which it was based, an issue that Scott Pilgrim vs The World definitely didn’t have. Therefore, let’s erase Shyamalan’s version and start from scratch. As a matter of fact, what would happen if Airbdender was combined with Scott Pilgrim?! Find out in the video below…

Earlier this week, we posted a fake trailer that featured the audio from Scott Pilgrim with the footage of The Matrix Trilogy. We thought it was pretty well done until this came along. The one thing that makes this one slightly superior is how well the lips match the words. Not only that but certain situations that appeared in Pilgrim, sync up so well with the Airbender scenes.

If only the real Last Airbender could have been as good as this two minute trailer. All of our favorite characters are featured, the footage has the right tone, and there are some awesome action sequences.

The 4th of July weekend is officially here and it’s already gone to the wolves…and vampires. The highly anticipated The Twilight Saga Eclipse opened in theaters on Wednesday to record breaking numbers. The third installment in the popular franchise has been described as the best film in the series and features a grief-stricken Victoria out for blood, Bella’s blood! There’s also the M. Night Shyamalan adaptation of the Nickelodeon series The Last Airbender about a young boy with the power to control the elements (water, air, fire, and earth).

On an indie note, director Taylor Hackford’s new film Love Ranch starring Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci is also hitting theaters and centers on a married couple who opens the first legal brothel in Nevada. Doesn’t that sound like an interesting way to spend the holiday?

The Last Airbender – How it All Went Wrong

This weekend, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film will have to fight off toys, vampires and werewolves to earn some decent change over the holiday. Unfortunately Twilight and Toy Story 3 are the least of The Last Airbender’s problems. The film is an adaptation of a popular Nickelodeon animated series created by Americans who were inspired by anime and Asian culture. The show was ten times more entertaining than anything this film has to offer and despite its splashy special effects and action sequences this might be another dud for the once hot director.

There are two major flaws that force The Last Airbender into “craptastic” territory, casting and its script. Over the past year Shyamalan received a lot of flack for not hiring more ethnic actors in the main roles of Aang, Sokka, and Katara. The director has responded to such criticism by saying the characters have ,”culturally ambiguous features… [you're] meant to see yourself in it.”

From /Film:

For the Water Tribe, I wanted to go Anglo/European/Russian, that sort of feeling. Nicola [Peltz] felt that way to me, and Jackson [Rathbone] looks so much like Sokka to me. Really, the only ones I don’t represent in the movie, and it’s intentional, is the blond people of the world. So there, I apologize to them. (Laughs)

I don’t think he understands the big picture when it comes to this issue. He claims that the Water tribe was meant to look European yet he completely ignores that fact that their broken up into two tribes The Southern and the Northern and the Southern look more Inuit with the exception of Rathbone and Peltz.

The idea that these characters are ambiguous also seems strange to me since the creators of the series (Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko,) have said time and time again that they were inspired by Asians and various ethnic cultures (that sounds pretty specific to me).

Shyamalan not only directed the film but he also wrote the screenplay, which was a horrible mess. It was dry, boring, and stagnant. And the uninspired delivery of its actors didn’t help. The performances from the 3 main stars was so stiff it gave Hayden Christensen (circa Star Wars Episodes II and III) a run for his money.

[Spoiler Alert] The film has been set up as a trilogy just like the show. It’s broken up into books and has an abrupt ending that leaves it wide open for the next movie. Shyamalan should have made the finale a little more conclusive because I don’t think this movie will earn enough to warrant a sequel. How many tentpole films have been set up as franchises and failed? Have we forgotten about The Golden Compass?

In closing, if you’re not a fan of the show and don’t have any background on the characters you won’t be interested in what this movie has to offer. It’s unfortunate because the series is really amazing and deserves its accolades yet Shyamalan’s film does it a huge disservice.

M.Night Shyamalan: Past, Present, and Future – Will The Last Airbender Make It?

M. Night Shyamalan with a camera is like a kid in a grown-up’s body. He’s megalomaniacal, but in a sincerely nice way. He’s made a notorious habit out of making films with twist endings because that’s the way he keeps you on a leash – he throws one final curveball that knocks you off your lid. You might like it (The Sixth Sense), and you might not (The Village). But either way, your forced to admit when all is said and done that you just drank his psychological Kool-Aid.

M. Night Shyamalan—third to first: his resume, in order of both first to last, and best to worst…

1. The Sixth Sense – Splendid debut. Well, technically he did do two other, lesser-known films, but this was his first commercial one, and a dandy at that. The twist? Bruce was dead the whole time.

2. Unbreakable—Alright. Hard to stomach the sight of the almighty Jules Winfield being dominated by a subway entrance stairs. The twist? Jules is secretly a badass supervillain.

3. Signs—Ending too dumb to overcome previous 90 minutes of masterful buildup. Kudos to Shyamalan for getting one last great performance out of Mel Gibson before he went nuts. The twist? Aliens hate water. Not only that, but they suck at doing their pre-invasion homework, invading a planet that is 3/4 stuff that can kill them.

4. The Village—Same lame ending as signs, except buildup was equally lame. Great performance from Bryce Dallas Howard before she started ruining sequels (Spider-Man 3, Terminator Salvation…be afraid Eclipse, be very afraid). The twist? It’s the present-day, the whole time.

5. Lady in the Water— No twist here, except that maybe – shocker! – making a movie about a bedtime story should be left to Disney (to which he actually tried to sell the script, but they wisely didn’t bite).

6. The Happening— Again, no twist ending here. But he made a huge mistake making something R-rated so preachy and eco-friendly, and casting Mark Wahlberg as something other than somebody who could kick your ass.

7. The Last Airbender– Fingers crossed.

Right now, Shyamalan is stuck—he wants to keep making movies born straight out if his id, but studios probably won’t keep letting him do it because we, the audience, have come to know exactly what to expect when we see the words ‘written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan’. We know to expect the unexpected…except after a while, the unexpected gets old. The five movies he’s written and directed since The Sixth Sense have each been a little worse then the one that came before it because Shyamalan just assumed we wouldn’t wise up to his game.

My guess is that Shyamalan will have to start doing more movies like The Last Airbender—already established franchises with an embedded style & vision. His own shtick—low-humming, supernatural suspense always building up to a denouement that redefines the logic of everything that’s previously happened—expired after The Village, except either nobody told him so, or he just didn’t get the hint. His movies all had been written and directed by him—conceived from his imagination. So it’s no wonder that they all unfold surrealistically, like dreams, with the inevitable ‘wake-up!’ moment meant to bring everybody back to their senses.

Shyamalan earned himself a lot of leeway and creative freedom with The Sixth Sense—he’s like the latest in a long line of directors who hit a home run in their first at bat and either got to do whatever they wanted for the rest of their careers (Quentin Tarantino), or ended up being relegated when the studio heads figured out they couldn’t live up to the hype (Michael Cimino).

In one way, Airbender is perfect for Shyamalan: it’s mostly kids doing cool, supernatural stuff in a mythological universe. It’s not set in the real word, so Shyamalan doesn’t have to worry about being constrained by real-world logic that’s failed him in the past. He can really take the story and only decorate the blank spots with his well-suited imagination, like falling into someone else’s acid trip and not having to worry about the hangover. If Airbender does serious box-office damage, don’t be surprised. Airbender unburdens Shyamalan with a story and a built-in appeal to the younger demographic.

Call me crazy (or retarded, or fat, or racist…it’s the internet—the world’s your oyster), but I think casting mostly white actors to uphold an Asian-influenced world is a subversive attempt by Shyamalan to force the viewer that knows anything about the original franchise to suspend disbelief in a more real world sense. It’s like he’s getting his twist out of his system right away and putting his stamp of ‘what-the-fuck?’ approval on it so everybody can hedge their bets before they sit down in the theater.

Will The Last Airbender break Shyamalan out of his slump, or send him further on his downward spiral?

The Last Airbender: Movie Review

After months of bad press and racebending rants M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film The Last Airbender is about to hit theaters. It’s based on the popular Nickelodeon animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” that was created by Americans who were inspired by anime. The show was popular with both critics and fans alike but unfortunately the live-action adaptation doesn’t deserve such praise. Not only did Shyamalan direct but he also wrote the screenplay for the film that suffers from many problems that go beyond its questionable casting.

The Plot:

The Last Airbender centers on Aang, the young successor to a line of Avatars who have the ability to control the four elements (earth, fire, water, air). In the past there was peace between the four nations that represented each element, but it changed when the last Avatar disappeared and the Fire Nation attacked, forcing a war on the other three nations. Now 100 years later, the Avatar has returned and has the Fire Nation’s disgraced Prince Zuko, Fire Lord Ozai, and their Army General after him.

The Good:

The Action: The battle scenes in this film were pretty well done. The mixing of martial arts and the elements was an amazing sight to see. Whenever the Fire, Earth, or Water benders go toe to toe with each other you can’t take your eyes off of it.
The Special Effects: The effects used for the element scenes were semi-believable and a lot sharper than you’d expect. Also, Aang’s Flying Bison surprisingly translated well from the animated series to the live action version.

The Bad:

The Acting: Horrible! The acting in this film is horrendous. This is Noah Ringer’s first starring role so his lack of delivery is understandable but everyone else must be held 100% accountable. The performances were terrifying to watch because they were so stiff, uneasy, and forced.
The Script: This screenplay had some of the blockiest dialogue I’ve ever heard. It gives Twilight and Star Wars Episode II a run for their money. If you’ve never seen the TV show, from which the movie is based, you won’t have any connection to the characters or their journey. The bad script plus the bad acting is a recipe for disaster.
The Set-up: The animated series was broken up into three books (Book One: Water, Book Two: Earth, Book Three: Fire). The film replicates that set up (spoiler) by beginning with a chapter and ending with a major cliff-hanger that will go over into the next film. This was a bad move to make because the film might not do well enough to earn sequel money therefore leaving those who did enjoy the movie without a conclusion or pay-off.

The RaceBending:

The biggest issue people have with this film is its casting. Three of the main characters are played by White actors when on the show they’re shown significantly darker. In the movie, Ringer actually looks like his animated character and his tribe of Airbenders is filled with people from various ethnic backgrounds. The Fire Nation is mostly Middle Eastern or East Indian, and the Northern Water Tribe is predominantly White. They all shared similar features for their region and it made sense.

The issue comes in with the Southern Water Tribe where Rathbone and Peltz’ characters Sokka and Katara come from. Those two along with their grandmother seem to be the only people who aren’t of Inuit descent in their tribe. They stick out like 3 sore thumbs! They look like they belong in the Northern Water Tribe instead.

Overall:

The Last Airbender has decent action but the pacing, the acting, and the screenplay are terrible. If you really want to see Aang’s story watch the TV series because this movie doesn’t do it justice.

Rating: 3/10

The Last Airbender Clip – Fire Nation is Here

Paramount has finally decided to release a clip from next month’s The Last Airbender and it features none other than Jackson Rathbone. He plays Sokka in the film and conveniently stars in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which opens next week. Are they trying to keep his visibility up so they can leech off some of those vampire profits? The clip is entitled “Fire Nation is Here,” and it’s pretty self-explanatory. Take a look…

This has to be the most anti-climactic clip they could have chosen. It literally gives us nothing except mediocre acting and a lot of green screen effects. The film has been under a lot of scrutiny and instead of using this clip to show how amazing it will be they highlighted some weak teaser footage that doesn’t show any action (rolls eyes).

The Last Airbender To Open A Day Earlier – July 1st

In random movie news, Paramount has decided to move up the release date for The Last Airbender. Instead of hitting theaters on July 2nd it will debut on July 1st, which makes us wonder. What difference will a day make? The news comes via Twitter courtesy of Frank Marshall who’s a producer on the film.

Marshall didn’t reveal any specifics regarding why the move was made he just stated the following:

LAST AIRBENDER release date moves up to July 1st…

He posted this announcement after revealing that the film’s first exhibitor screening went very well. Therefore the quality of Airbender shouldn’t be an issue, unless he’s blowing smoke. This is just one of many films that have decided to shift their release dates this summer. Dinner for Schmucks was recently pushed back to get some breathing room from Christopher Nolan’s Inception and Angelina Jolie’s latest flick, Salt.

The Last Airbender is the only major film opening the July 2nd weekend, and it won’t get any real competition until Despicable Me and Predators come out on the 9th. On another note, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opens on June 30th and they might try to skim some of its viewers because Jackson Rathbone appears in both movies. Maybe he can steal some of its fans. The possibilities are endless.

Last Airbender Clips From MTV Movie Awards

As we all know the Twilight Movie Awards… Oops… sorry… The MTV Movie Awards are all about promotion, promotion, promotion! And we love it because we get to see a ton of new clips from many of the most anticipated films of the summer. Aside from the other clips we posted from Eclipse (it is an award ceremony for them after all), Lucas’ Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and an awesome Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sneak peek, they also released a kick-ass, action-packed, Roland Emmerich-style wave crashing clip of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender.

There is no way that I could be more skeptical about an M. Night film, BUT even I have to admit that this latest clip and the recent international trailer look pretty awesome. Check it out below…

New International Trailer for The Last Airbender

Over the holiday weekend Paramount decided to release a new trailer for The Last Airbender. It’s an international version with Japanese subtitles, and features a few quick shots of unseen footage. This version actually looks a lot better than the domestic trailer that came out a couple of months ago. Take a look and tell us what you think…

In the past there was peace between the four nations that represented each element, but it changed when the Avatars disappeared and the Fire Nation attacked, forcing a war on the other three nations. Now it’s up to 12 year old Aang to defeat their army and bring balance and peace back to all four nations.

Is it just us or does the Japanese narration make everything sound better? The footage itself is great but there’s something about the voice over that takes it to the next level. Everything else looks good but the actress who plays Katara comes off as a little annoying. In the cartoon the character didn’t bother us that much but here her voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

A new international poster has been released for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender and it’s all about Aang. The one sheet gets up close and personal with the film’s lead actor Noah Ringer, his shaved head, and his mystical tattoo. The film will hit U.S. theaters on July 2nd and co-stars Dev Patel and that creepy vampire guy from Twilight, Jackson Rathbone. Take a look…

The Last Airbender centers on Aang, the young successor to a line of Avatars who have the ability to control the four elements (earth, fire, water, air). In the past there was peace between the four nations that represented each element, but it changed when the Avatars disappeared and the Fire Nation attacked, forcing a war on the other three nations. Now it’s up to 12 year old Aang to defeat their army and bring balance and peace back to all four nations.

Earlier this year when the promotion for The Last Airbender kicked into high gear we were excited to see what Shyamalan had done with this cult favorite. Then a few weeks ago news broke that the film would be converted into 3D and now our interest has turned into disdain. Have we learned nothing from Clash of the Titans and Alice in Wonderland? Fast 3D upgrades look like crap!
