A few months ago we told you that Spy Kids director Robert Rodriguez would be taking The Jetsons to the big screen. One of our concerns was if he would actually be able to deliver such a project with so many others (Machete, Predators) on his plate — the answer is no.

According to Cinema Blend, Warner Bros is bringing in a replacement and it comes with a slight hint of cheese. Anger Management and Get Smart director Peter Segal will be directing the live action adaptation of The Jetsons. It does seem like they’ve done from one extreme to another. There is no doubt that Rodriguez and Segal will have two very different interpretations of the same film.

Whether you like the trade or not, the good thing about having Segal as director is that he’ll be able to get the job done, and perhaps he’ll throw in some good comedy.  In a way, I think he actually makes more sense in the Jetsons world than Roriguez. I’m not a huge fan of Segal, but 50 First Dates worked for me.

The project will start fresh; Warner Bros. has thrown away Rodriguez original script (which rumor has it, did attract Jim Carrey to join the project). The search for new writers will begin once Segal signs the contract.

There’s no word on when the film is scheduled to come out, but we’ll keep you updated.

According to filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, the live action adaptation of the famous cartoon series The Jetsons will begin shooting next year. Rodriguez, known for his work on kids movies (Spy Kids 3-D) and sci-fi flicks (Nerveracker), has four other project lined up before he makes The Jetsons. Those include Machete, sci-fi action film Nerveracker, a reboot of the Predator series called Predators, and Sin City 2.

The family sitcom, set in a futuristic utopia in the year 2062 (doesn’t seem that far away anymore, does it?) follows the lives of George and Jane Jetson and their teenage daughter Judy and genius son Elroy. Life—especially the work load for George—is shown as comically leisurely because of the incredible sophistication and all the technology invented. Even the wife, Jane, has a robot as a maid to do her work for her.

There are two concerns following the announcement of The Jetsons being filmed next year:

  • Will it be a good remake like Batman and The Transformers or a bad remake like Wild Wild West and Alvin and the Chipmunks.
  • Will Robert Rodriguez be able to complete everything he has on his plate by next year in order to make The Jetsons?

More Predator news has come our way, and it’s pretty juicy! We all knew that Robert Rodriguez was producing the reboot of the popular sci-fi franchise. But, what we didn’t know is that he will also direct the feature. There has been confirmation that he will helm the updated film, which he plans on calling Predators. According to IESB, Rodriguez spoke about Predators, and several of other upcoming films at a press conference he gave at his Troublemaker Studios.

The press conference was held with several Texas law makers in attendance to sign the HB 873, which greatly improves the film incentive program for the state. While there, he dropped a line regarding several features on his upcoming slate.

“I’m going to be able to shoot my upcoming Machete here, a sci-fi action film called Nervewrackers, a re-boot of the Predator series called Predators, and a couple of smaller movies called Sin City 2 and The Jetsons.”

What a roster?! Once again, Sin City 2 keeps rearing it’s head. No matter the drama circling that project he and Frank Miller will not let it go. That’s one of the reasons I love Rodriguez. He is all over the place but in a good way. Amongst his list of properties, I have to admit the Jetsons movie is what I really want to see. I know he’s done his share of family films with the Spy Kids, franchise but the Jetsons is a part of America’s cinematic fabric. Those are childhood memories he’s stepping on.
