ABC Is Set To Make ‘The Hulk’ A TV Show In 2013

Despite writer-director Joss Whedon’s gift for florid and witty wordplay for powerful actors, ironically, the breakout star of Whedon’s Avengers was a CGI Hulk who utters exactly two words (amidst some grunting and yelling) throughout the film’s two and a half hour running time. Positive fan reaction to the Hulk has been so strong that Marvel has announced they may repeal their “No More Hulk Movies” policy, and now, ABC is pushing to make the Hulk the star of his own TV show.

There has been a long-discussed plan for ABC to broadcast its own Hulk show for some time now, with Guillermo del Toro producing. However that plan appears to have laid dormant for some time. Until now, it seems.

During the ABC upfront presentations today, ABC entertainment president Paul Lee stated that he wants “some Marvel projects come to television,” which, given Marvel’s current dominion over the box office, audiences, and pop culture itself, makes sense.

As for the big green guy, Lee stated that Hulk wasn’t quite ready for the 2012 season—but that he should be shirt and pants a-ripping by 2013. “Hulk is in development,” he continued. “It wasn’t going to be ready this season but we hope it’s going to be ready for next season.”

Very little is known in terms of what the Hulk show would consist of—will it take place in the Marvel films continuity? Will it be set in its own serialized world, a la the original show? Would Mark Ruffalo be willing to star? Looks like we’ll have to wait until 2013 to find out.

The Hulk To Get His Own Movie (Again) After ‘The Avengers’?

The Hulk—while one of the wilder, more interesting characters in the Marvel Universe, he’s also one that has never properly translated onto film. Sure, he’s had a soap opera-y TV show and a handful of cheesy TV movies, a flawed but deeply interesting Ang Lee film, and then a blander than bland reboot with Edward Norton, but he’s never had something truly great. Now, thanks to the overwhelmingly popular reaction to the character in The Avengers, we may be getting a third cinematic attempt at a solo Hulk film.

Originally, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stated that the Hulk would not be getting his own reboot, and that “this was the other shot. Right? I mean, this was the third appearance of Hulk and everything that we had and were going for, we put in to Hulk’s appearance in Avengers.”

Which makes sense—the Hulk has defied a Spider-man, Iron Man, or The Dark Knight-quality film for years, so perhaps it would be better to allow the character to flourish in an ensemble film, rather than let him flounder with his own movie.

Not so fast, though, according to Marvel’s President of Consumer Products, Paul Gitter, who states that thanks to The Avengers, Hulks’ “sales are up in a major way. We repositioned him from where he was always misunderstood to now depicting him in a more heroic and aspirational manner.” Even further, Gitter wants to spin “him off to a stand-alone program next year,” i.e., a full length film in 2015.

Might this mean we finally get an all-around awesome Hulk film, finally? Or will it just be another tent-pole securing, franchise-building two-hour commercial for The Avengers films, like Thor and Captain America?

Is ‘Iron Man’ Wearing Out His Welcome?

Since exploding onto the screen in 2008, Marvel’s Iron Man has imbedded himself into the pop culture. In addition to headlining two Hollywood blockbusters, the character made a scene stealing cameo appearance in 2008′s The Incredible Hulk and will be featured prominently in The Avengers, which hits theaters Friday. But with Iron Man 3 well in the works, it begs the question – “Is the character wearing out his welcome?”

Looking back at the first Iron Man, it’s a minor miracle that the character became so big – it seemed poised to fail. Iron Man was a second tier superhero that lacked the mythic nature and pathos of a Superman, Batman, or Spider-Man. And Robert Downey Jr. – while being an enormously talented actor – never had to shoulder this sort of big-budget motion picture before, and a lot was riding on his metal outfit.

Behind the camera, you had Jon Favreau, who was known to bring an independent sensibility – including lots of improvisation – to any project he worked on. Arming him with a $140 million budget was a gamble for studio bosses. In the end, Favreau and Downey had the last laugh, crafting a well-rounded and occasionally riveting film. Iron Man had arrived and fans rejoiced.

But this has proven to be a blessing and a curse for both the character and star. Landing the role of Tony Stark gave Robert Downey Jr. a huge outlet to showcase his talents. and his Stark is one of the most debonair superheroes to ever grace the screen. Downey rocketed to the top of the A-list, becoming one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. However, his performance as Tony Stark is so iconic that Downey has become imprisoned by it. With the exception of Tropic Thunder (which was filmed before Iron Man was released), Downey has played a series of characters much in the same vein as Stark – his Sherlock Holmes is Stark with a British accent Though he can sell a one-liner with the best of them, Downey is capable of so much more.

As for Iron Man, Marvel has certainly done their job in saturating the market with toys, video games, and film appearances of the character in recent years. While Downey’s cameo in The Incredible Hulk provided a much needed jolt to an otherwise tame motion picture, cracks in the franchise began to show with the release of Iron Man 2. Though it had all the effects and action money could buy, the memorable characters got lost in the mix, including Tony Stark. Iron Man did a wonderful job of laying the groundwork for Stark as a three dimensional character and the sequel failed to build on that. It failed, period.

It looks as though the character’s appearance in the upcoming Avengers film will offer more of the same. Sure, Downey will deliver his characteristic rock-solid performance and The Avengers should go on to become one of the highest grossing films of the year, but is it a sin to ask for a little more substance? There is no question that Iron Man is still at his zenith commercially., but there could be a backlash if the films don’t become more artistically ambitious.

In December 2010, it was announced that Jon Favreau passed on directing Iron Man 3 and writer/director Shane Black would be stepping in. Having only helmed the action-comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (though famous for his scripts for Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout) it is hard to get a read on where Black will take the franchise. Last week at CinemaCon, he dropped a few subtle hints saying the film will be a thriller and incorporate elements of war and terrorism. More intriguing was that Black said the Tony Stark character will be seriously tested by these elements. Hopefully, Shane Black remains true to his word and gets back to the kind of deep-rooted character development featured in the first Iron Man. The last thing we want is Iron Man becoming the next Pirates of the Caribbean, another once-innovative franchise that was drowned in a sea of greed and repetition.

New ‘Avengers’ Clip Features Black Widow Hiring The Hulk

We’re just under two weeks until the official release of The Avengers, one of the most anticipated films of 2012. The Joss Whedon-directed superhero film features such Marvel hotshots as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye teaming up to defend Earth from the threat posed by Thor’s villainous brother, Loki. And in a new clip from the film, you can see how Black Widow draws a cranky Bruce Banner/Hulk into the Avengers.

The clip finds Black Widow being sent by Nick Fury (Sam Jackson) to recruit scientist Bruce Banner into the Avengers in order to use his expertise on Gamma radiation to track an item leaking minute traces of Gamma rays. She makes it clear that the group is not looking to use Banner’s Hulk abilities, something that Banner wants to put to the test.

It’s an interesting clip for two reasons—as we’ve seen from the trailers, the Hulk definitely makes a violent appearance or two in the film, meaning that either Banner accidentally loses his temper, or that Black Widow and Fury were manipulating him to use his Hulk abilities after all. The other reason: perhaps it’s just us, but Scarlett Johansson’s acting is so wooden in the scene, it’s almost as if Mark Ruffalo himself isn’t even there, and is as CGI’d as the Hulk itself.

The Avengers is set for official release on May 4.

Japanese ‘Avengers’ Trailer Reveals New Footage, New Villains, And New Base

Back in February, we received a new Avengers trailer that featured a bevy of new footage containing the Hulk, Loki, and a ton of action, and it was, quite frankly, pretty exciting. But then Japan went and received a trailer with even more new footage, stealing all of our thunder with new shots of the film’s otherworldy villains, the SHIELD mobile base, and the Avengers’ jet.

While the trailer seems extraordinarily light on Hulk footage (something the February trailer had in abundance) you do get more of the villains in this trailer—it appears Loki is leading some kind of alien army against Earth. And while that seems a little bland for a group of villains, remember, this film is more about its heroes rather than its villains (think the first Iron Man film).

So, what did you think? Not bad, right? While the film still looks as if it could slip into Fantastic Four cheesiness, I’m growing more and more optimistic with each new peak at the film. We’ll all find out how well the film does when it’s released on May 4^th.

A Picture Of The Incredible Hulk From ‘The Avengers’ Is Finally Released

Curious as to what, exactly, the Incredible Hulk would look like in the upcoming Avengers film? Well, in case you didn’t comb through the Super Bowl trailer for the superhero film frame by frame, you may have missed the detail in the one shot of the big green guy who has yet to be as featured in the media as the rest of his teammates. And, after the jump, you can take a look at the new Incredible Hulk for yourself.

Easily putting to shame the last two CGI Hulks that always looked a little plastic and wonky on the big screen, this new Hulk appears to be taking advantage of the best and latest that CGI has to offer, looking far more “real” than previous incarnations of the not so jolly green giant (ugh, forgive me). While he doesn’t quite resemble Mark Ruffalo as much as one would expect (Ruffalo is portraying the Hulk’s alter ego, Bruce Banner), it’s still a marked improvement, and better than we expected to see.

As for you—what do you think? The Hulk has yet to avoid looking cartoonish and silly on the big screen. Do you think he’ll finally get his due in The Avengers?

Two New ‘Avengers’ Pictures Are Released; Captain America’s Suit Isn’t Getting Any Cooler

Last month, we showed you five new pictures from The Avengers, featuring stars Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, and Scarlet Johansson looking at things very, very dramatically. They didn’t really indicate much in the way of plot (beyond the fact that the Avengers are going to, you know, assemble at some point), but hey, we at least got to see that Bruce Banner is going to dress in his classic purple and Downey Jr. still has that weirdly sculpted goatee. Now we have two new pics featuring the heroes—you guessed it—staring fixedly at things.

The first shot is above, featuring Captain America still in a suit that just does not translate onto film well at all (Chris Evans still looks like a little kid in an Evel Knievel suit, but what can you do? It’s the classic suit), flanked by Hawkeye and Black Widow as the trio walk and look generally ready for some kind of badassery.

The second picture (below), features Thor being all flexed and tense while looking at a screen with Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulsen.

Again, not much in the way of plot, but enough to keep the fans excited until Joss Whedon’s film is released on May 4^th.

‘The Avengers’ Full Trailer Has Been Released

Well, it’s finally here—the trailer for the Marvel Films juggernaut in which they mash together the Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America films into a gargantuan, two-hour plus sandwich of explosions, Robert Downey Jr. quips, unconvincing Hulk CGI, and Scarlett Johansson doing things in tights: The Avengers. Toss in some Nine Inch Nails music, the bad guy with the slick mullet from Thor, and some Sam Jackson action in which Sam Jackson acts all Sam Jackson with that Sam Jackson style (did I mention Sam Jackson is in this? Sam Jackson is in this), and you’ve got just about every single Marvel movie trailer you’ve ever seen, all rolled into one convenient mush for you to slurp up.

So, what do you think? The film is directed by Joss Whedon, the man behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Serenity, so there’s a sliver of hope that this won’t simply be a directed-by-committee film which is essentially a checklist of studio-mandated moments that just barely hang together and exist solely to generate ad revenue via action figures, video games, fast food tie-ins, and overseas markets. Oh, who am I kidding—there’s loud rock music, Scarlett Johansson is kicking things, and stuff goes boom real loud. I’ll see you there on opening day.

First Look At ‘The Avengers’ Leaks, And It’s Horrible

Well, after months of breathless rumors and conjecture about the film, the first bit of Avengers artwork was released today. The film, set for release on May 4, 2012 and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, features a supergroup of superheroes saving the earth and learning to work together despite their differences and blah blah blah. What’s more amazing is the horribly cheesy leaked poster, which looks like something you’d find painted on the side of a van in circa 1983 east L.A.

According to Coming Soon, “a promo poster for Marvel’s The Avengers was spotted at the Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas and photographed by ESQ.” And guess what? It looks awful; that said, it’s better and more entertaining than Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Elektra, and Wolverine combined, so it’s not totally without merit, despite the fact that it resembles the front cover of a bargain bin coloring book. But hey, it’s got lightening and a cool hammer and Scarlett Johansson in tights, so I guess that’s kind of cool, too.

Five TV Reboots We Didn’t Ask For

In the world of film, reboots and remakes are a dime a dozen but when it comes to television it’s a rarity. This is because audiences get more attached to characters they see on a weekly (sometimes daily) bases for several years. They automatically have an idea of what the show is in their heads, and it’s a hard thing to shake. But with the success of CBS’ revamp of “Hawaii Five-O” networks are developing reboots of some of their biggest properties from the seventies and eighties hoping for the same result.

Do we really need all these reboots? Here are five shows that are returning to the small screen and there’s absolutely nothing we can do to stop them…

Charlie’s Angels: (1976 – 1981)

The Original: “Charlie’s Angels” was an action series that followed a trio of abnormally beautiful women who worked as private investigators. The show launched the careers of Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd, and most notably Farrah Fawcett.
The Reboot: ABC is currently fast tracking a new “Charlie’s Angels” starring Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh, and Rachael Taylor. The premise will be the same, but each woman’s background will be slightly different. One’s a martial arts expert, one’s a weapon’s expert, and the other’s a con artist.
The Dilemma: “Charlie’s Angels” was previously adapted as two films in 2000 and 2003. With this latest incarnation, the Angels will be back on the small screen, and on their original TV network. This time not only will they have to separate themselves from the cast of the first show, but the cast of the films as well. In other words, I smell an identity crisis.

The New Adventures of Wonder Woman: (1975 – 1979)

The Original: “The New Adventures of Wonder Woman” was a live action TV adaptation of the DC comic of the same name. The series starred Lynda Carter as the title character, an Amazonian princess living a double life. Half of her was Diana Prince, a working woman, and the other was a superhero complete with an invisible jet, a golden lasso, and bullet deflecting bracelets.
The Reboot: David E. Kelley is producing the pilot, which will feature Adrianne Palicki as Wonder Woman. No plot details have been revealed as of yet so we don’t know how the comic mythology will fit in with Kelley’s vision.
The Dilemma: Kelley is known for writing independent female characters, who always have issues balancing work and their personal life (“Alley McBeal”). Diana Prince isn’t that type of character. She was created to be a feminist entity that represented equality in all aspects of life. The original series touched on that but for the most part it was campy fun, and we accepted it for what it was. I’m not sure if Kelley can deliver that type of strength or if audiences are open to seeing a powerful woman who doesn’t have to resort to sex to get ahead.

The Incredible Hulk: (1978 – 1982)

With Thor is post-production, and Captain America almost in the can, there’s only one Marvel movie that fans have their eyes on: The Avengers. The film is scheduled to begin shooting next year and it will be an unprecedented superhero event. The Avengers will feature two new actors playing two familiar characters in the form of Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo. Ruffalo recently spoke to the folks over at IGN, and revealed what he’s doing to prepare for his big Hulk debut…

When he was hired to replace Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Ruffalo’s first order of business was to re-familiarize himself with the material.

I think you go right back to the beginning and dust off your first issue of Avengers and I’ve been doing that. I’ve been watching the 100 hours of Bill Bixby’s Hulk. And I’ve been really thinking about the inception, the original motivation of that character and why they came up with that character.

He’s a cross between Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein. I’m finding a lot of stuff there. And I’m actually going to be physically playing the Hulk. No other actor’s ever done that. So I’ve been getting into Tai Chi and Pilates and doing a lot of movement stuff. I don’t know what I want to do with it exactly, but I’ve been working physically to bring the leviathan alive.

So he’s going to be “physically” playing the Hulk? All the other incarnations of the character have been CGI, and we can’t imagine them doing the Ben Grimm/The Thing technique from Fantastic Four on him. He’s too big. Maybe he’s referring to something else?

He also went on to say that he starts shooting The Avengers in April, which will have him coming in two months after cameras begin rolling. We were told by his co-star Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) that production officially begins in February.

The Incredible Hulk Headed Back to TV

Marvel has joined forces with ABC to bring The Incredible Hulk back to the small screen. The character hasn’t appeared in a feature film since 2008, and is slated to make his debut with Mark Ruffalo in 2012′s The Avengers, but while we’re waiting on that the studio is working on his segue back into television. This shouldn’t come as a surprise because ABC is owned by Disney, who also happens to own Marvel. Yep, coincidence? We think not.

The last time the character appeared in a regular live action television series was in 1978, when CBS made body builder Lou Ferrigno a star for playing the bulky, green monster. Do you know what we smell? We smell every one and their mother trying to fill that void that’s going to be left when “Smallville” ends in May. There will be a superhero slot open and if The Hulk doesn’t fill it we’re sure the new “Wonder Woman” reboot will. The network is currently in the early stages of development and are on the look out for a writer.

“The Hulk is the giant, green, bulked-up and raging alter ego of quiet physicist Bruce Banner that was the result of Banner’s exposure to radiation in a gamma bomb explosion. Unlike other superheroes, Banner has no control over his alter ego and involuntarily transforms into the Hulk every time he gets angry.”
