The 69th annual Golden Globes nominees have been announced, and this year they’re big on definite articles. The Help, The Artist and The Descendents lead the pack of nominees. Which is interesting because – if the Globes have a weakness – it’s that they chase the famous names, and these noms aren’t that celeb-heavy. Then again, George Clooney has received three nominations directly (for actor, writing and directing) between The Ides of March and Descendents, and surely a fourth for producing March. Real Steel easily topped the box office this weekend. The Hugh Jackman robot-boxing film grossed $27.3 million, knocking down last week’s winner Dolphin Tale. Ryan Gosling and George Clooney‘s The Ides of March came in at No. 2 with a solid gross of $10.4 million, we predicted $13.7 million. The family film Dolphin Tale took the third place with $9.2 million, bringing its total to $49 million. Brad Pitt‘s Moneyball followed with $7.5 million, raising its total to $49.3 million in three weekends. And finally, rounding off the top five is 50/50. The cancer comedy beat out movies like The Lion King and Dream House with $5.5 million.

And that’s not a spoiler (or is it?) After a couple of weekends of older pictures, either in days (Dolphin Tale took the #1 slot a week after release) or years (the reissue of The Lion King), the first week of October promises to deliver new movies can top the box office. Shawn Levy‘s Real Steel is a genuine crowd pleaser, while George Clooney‘s The Ides of March is a smart political thriller. Both use star power (Hugh Jackman, Ryan Gosling) to their advantage. But both also have strikes against them.

And like everything he’s directed it’s good, but falls short of greatness. Ryan Gosling stars as Stephens Myers, a wunderkind political analyst who’s one of the most important men behind Governor Morris (Clooney), but as the campaign comes it’s most contested primary, political and personal drama shows what these men are made of.

The Social Network’s Max Minghella has joined the film along with the talented Jeffrey Wright. The duo will join the current roster that includes Ryan Gosling, who’ll play one of the leads in the feature formerly known as Farrugut North.

George Clooney is in the news again because of his next directorial feature. A couple months ago we reported on his big screen adaptation of the play Farragut North and he’s accumulated a dream team of actors to bring the story to life including Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling.
