With this Tuesday’s Blu-ray and DVD releases, there’s a number of the most anticipated films of fall 2011′s slate available for home video consumption. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Muppets are coming out in multiple disc special editions. But for those who’ve followed it’s Japanese release, the big prize this week is an official domestic release of Battle Royale, which was too controversial to be released in America.

It’s New Year’s Eve on Saturday, which means 2012 starts Sunday and we’ll be getting a non-stop stream of Mayan apocalypse jokes about everything. For the cinemas there are two movies opening: Pariah (12/28) on four screens and The Iron Lady (12/30) on another four screens. These are qualifying runs, and it’s likely that Meryl Streep will get a nomination for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher. Shame about the movie, though. Let’s talk numbers, shall we?

Though the holiday season tends to bring out some blockbusters, Christmas itself is a terrible day for movies. And this year, with Christmas Eve on a Saturday and Christmas on a Sunday, we’re not going to see strong weekend numbers from anyone. Something that’s going to repeat next weekend with New Year’s. Then again, it’s been a weak year, and last weekend proved it. This weekend we get The Adventures of Tintin, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in it’s non-Imax run, We Bought a Zoo, The Darkest Hour and War Horse going wide. 2011 was the year of the indie. The majority of adaptations and blockbusters all fell completely flat, and numerous big studio dramas were missing that something special. Though the movie is due out momentarily, the press conference for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo just happened, and David Fincher was asked about his likelihood of doing the second two books in the Stieg Larson Millennium trilogy. His response was that if this film is successful, they’ll make the two sequels back-to-back.

It’s a big day for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo news. Today the embargo broke, and non-David Denby types can review the picture willy-nilly. We’ll have our review closer to release, but along with that, Sony has announced that David Fincher‘s latest opus will be hitting screens Tuesday, December 20 at 7 pm, instead of its scheduled December 21 opening.

This Fall has been modest in comparison to many other recent years, in terms of major film releases. On paper there were a number of films that could have been $100 Million plus titles, but only Breaking Dawn has done blockbuster business, and has remained on top of the box office for three weeks. That’s going to change with the release of New Year’s Eve. Still, it’s been a slow, slow Fall.

David Fincher now believes in viral marketing! The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which will be hitting theaters just in time for Christmas, first had a bootleg trailer that sold Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in the film with the sort of fast cutting one expects of Fincher. Now they’ve released an extended trailer (not intended for theaters) that sets up the entire film. Check it out.
