Pick of the Week: The Cove

Director Louie Psihoyos brings us an eye opening documentary about animal abuse in a lagoon off the coast of Japan. Using state-of-the-art equipment, a group of activists led by renowned dolphin trainer Ric O’Barry infiltrate a cove near Taijii, Japan to expose both a shocking instance of animal abuse and a serious threat to human health. The Cove won a well deserved Oscar this year. Check it out if you haven’t already.

$10 and Up

Pick of the week: Terminator Salvation

Director McG had big shoes to fill when he decided to take on the next sequel in the long running Terminator franchise. The film centered on an adult John Connor (Christian Bale) and his fight to rid his futuristic world of machines with the aid of a cyborg named Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington). Even though the film was mediocre in every sense of the word it was responsible for giving American audiences their first look at Worthington.

Blu-ray

Old School | $11.49

Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride | $ 12.49

Cast Away | $11.49

Big Trouble, Little China | $13.99

The Phantom | $8.99

Pick of the week: Old School

Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, and Jeremy Piven star in this hilarious farce about four guys who relive their college days when one of them accidentally buys a house on campus property. They form their own fraternity and invite every misfit male student to join. Old School is like the grandfather to Todd Phillips‘ The Hangover.

Which film will you pick up this week?

Based on the classic short story, “Button, Button” by Richard Matheson, writer/director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) brings us The Box, which asks the question, what would you be willing to sacrifice for a million dollars? Between this and The Fourth Kind, this weekend’s box office should empty the pockets of sci-fi fans nation wide.

Check out the review below…

The Players

Director/Writer: Richard Kelly

Cast: Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella

Producers: Richard Kelly, Dan Lin

Synopsis:

The year is 1976, and life in the suburbs is about as anti-climactic as feeding a fish. Norma Lewis (Diaz) a teacher at a private high school and her husband Arthur (Marsden) a NASA engineer live an average life with their son, until a lube-job with a hole in his face (Langella) shows up at their doorstep with an intriguing proposition: The Box. Press the button on the box, and you are immediately presented with 1 million dollars – at the expense of 1 human life. The burning question: press it and spend the rest of your life as a guilt-ridden degenerate? This is America, money talks, baby.

The Good:

Concept: “At the heart of ‘The Box’ is moral dilemma” says Richard Kelly. Concurred. The decision at hand for the Lewis family is a tough one – Arthur has been demoted, Norma needs surgery, etc. How often is one million dollars sitting on your kitchen table? A random, unrelated person will die, but your problems are solved. It’s optimistic to assume that the inhabitants of a universe driven by materialism wouldn’t at least mull over the proposition.

Temptation: Norma presses the button only to instantly regret her move. Humans have an indispensable desire for immediate satisfaction that oftentimes breeds impulsive behavior. Sadly, we don’t spend enough time considering the ramifications. The Box is a heightened, but well projected demonstration of this reality – challenging both the film’s characters and the audience with questions of self-sacrifice and redemption.

Structure: The story unravels itself quite inventively. While initially there are a lot of vague scenes and random cutting around, gradually, everything becomes accounted for. Every bit of tape presents a needed piece of information about this mysterious box. Once the story takes off, the rush of suspense and the desire to put the pieces together captures the audience until the credits roll.

Message: If we can’t prioritize the good of mankind before our individual needs, the demise of the human race is right around the corner. Enough said.

The Bad:

Cameron Diaz: I’m constantly asking myself how it is that Diaz tricks casting directors into giving her roles. She barely demonstrated a morsel of honesty in her performance. And her massively exaggerated Southern dialect (while no one else in the cast had more than a subtle twang) deflected all believability. The tears, the quizzical brow, the scowls of horror (!), were all hilarious – so hilarious, in fact, it was easy to forget how many people were dying and how high the steaks actually were. Not good.

Overall:

The Box was not bad, not bad at all. Even for those of us who aren’t sci-fi fans, this movie provokes much thought and definitely had me in a bit of a mental zone for a solid hour after seeing it.

Rating: 8/10

Check out The Box in theaters November 6th!

Hello ScreenCrave readers! It has been a while since we’ve rounded up the movies that will be released this week, so here you go! This week, the latest version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale, A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey, Colin Firth, and Gary Oldman will hit theaters. The animation in this movie is incredible, haunting, and a little creepy all at the same time. Unfortunately, the reviews for it have been a little mixed. On another note, The Men Who Stare at Goats is based on the Jon Ronson novel about a top-secret, psychic unit in the U.S. military, and stars George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, and Ewan McGregor. For all you horror movie-lovers out there, the latest film by Milla Jovovich entitled The Fourth Kind, will be released and it’s about alien abductions in Alaska. It isn’t going to be an Oscar-worthy film, but it might still be entertaining.

Over at Empire they’ve premiered the international teaser poster for Richard Kelly‘s upcoming thriller, The Box. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on November 9th in the U.S., and December 4th in the U.K. The Box stars Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, and Oscar nominee Frank Langella as the man without a face. Just kidding, that’s not his character’s name, even though it would be fitting.

Take a look at the latest poster…

This new poster is severely creepy and makes the infamous “box” look even more daunting than usual. Even though I was initially interested in this film, The Box somewhat slipped my mind over the past month or so. I enjoyed Kelly’s work on Donnie Darko, but my excitement for this film has decreased significantly. Maybe I need to see another trailer?

The premise for The Box centers on a couple named Norma (Diaz) and Arthur (James Marsden), who are delivered a mysterious box to their door. In the box is a button. If you press the button you get $1 million. Also, someone in the world dies, which totally sucks.

What do you think about the new poster for The Box?

I recently sat down with the stars of Richard Kelly‘s upcoming thriller, The Box. Cameron Diaz and James Marsden made the trip down to San Diego’s Comic-Con to give the fans and the press some info about their latest film. I learned a lot about their characters, the story, but most importantly I tried to get some dirt on Diaz starring in the Green Hornet! You can see if I was successful when you read my interview after the jump.

Can you talk a little about the story and your character?

JM: Well, life is sort of pretty simple at the beginning of this. They’re just sort of your average American couple and this strange guy shows up and says, ‘Hi, half of my face is gone, but here’s this box. If you press this button someone you don’t know will die and you’ll get a million dollars.’ They’re in a place financially where they could use a million dollars. He’s sort of a scientist and doesn’t believe that this is real but they hypothetically go down and have these discussions, like, ‘Could we do this, in good conscious take out someone else’s life?’ I saw the clip out there. That’s about as far as we can go.

Do you guys go back and forth on the issue?

JM: Yeah, definitely. For Norma, she saw Arlington herself. So she already knows that what she saw was real, that this man had half a face. So at this point it’s already unbelievable if you hear it, but since she’s seen it she knows that it’s real. So it makes her feel that this is a possibility, that what he’s saying is really true. She saw the money herself and he gave her a $100 and he wants to make sure the money is real. He didn’t see him. He doesn’t know how real this is.

What is this box? What is it that happens?

CD: Yeah, and he takes it apart and sees there’s nothing inside of it. He says there’s no way that this box can do what he says it can do. It’s just a box. It’s just a button. There’s nothing inside of it, there’s no transmitter. So they do go back and forth on it a lot but for the sake of moving through you see that there’s a moment where it’s just a button and they don’t really feel, it’s funny because when I think the decision is made in a way I think that Norma just expects it to not be real. It’s like, ‘Okay, maybe nothing will happen and if it happens it’ll all be okay because it’ll be someone we don’t know and someone who probably deserves it. It could be a murderer on death row.’ She’s really just hoping, they’re hoping for the best.

You’ve done a lot of romantic comedy work and straight comedy work before. Is the thriller aspect of this film what attracted you?

CD: Yeah. I think overall, funnily enough, I saw a beautiful love story in this movie. I did like the sort of existential part of this, why people do what they do, where are we coming from, is there a hand that sort of rests over us? Is there somebody judging us? What is it that sort of defines human beings? Can a decision like this really sort of be able – I think it does, but a decision like this because of the whole Arlington thing and his employers, basically it infers that there’s this bigger power that overlooks humanity and says, ‘We’re going to put you through this test and if you fail it we’re going to see if you’re willing to be here, if we’re willing to let you stay here, if you’re worthy of it –it’s the word that I’m looking for – ‘if you’re worthy of staying here.’ It’s sort of like on a day to day basis we make decisions, everyone does, that have repercussions. This decision, in particular, being a moral one is one of those really deep human questions, like, ‘What would I do? Would I really take another humans life? What would I take it for, a million dollars?’ Everyday we push a button. We push a button every single day in some way or another with the decisions that we make on every level, from the food that we eat, to the car that we drive. Every decision we make is pushing a button, and overall, are those decision ultimately going to lead to our demise? Yes. Can they also lead to us flourishing? Yes. It’s a matter of whether we question ourselves on a day to day basis, like, ‘What does this mean? What does this decision really mean?’ That’s what I saw in this film when I first read it.

JM: No more questions like that. She said it all.

What scares you guys? What gives you a really good fright?

CD: I don’t know. Oh, you know what terrifies me? Trailers to horror movies. I just can’t watch them. I hate horror movies. I’m always afraid. I kind of want to look but I’m always afraid that I’m going to look too long and see the one image that I’m not going to be able to get out of my head for at least a week every night before I’m going to bed. That’s the one I just don’t like.

JM: I’ll say that to Richard’s [Kelly] credit, what I love about this film is that it feels like to me a classic Kubrick, Hitchcock, suspenseful get into your head, get under your skin kind of thriller that are few and far between nowadays. That’s what terrifies me. I don’t know if you remember the original ‘Haunting’ but you don’t see anything and what you don’t see is what’s killing you. It’s what’s driving you crazy and is scary. In this day and age I know it’s very popular to show the blood, show the knives and tie people up but to me it’s more the psychological elements that terrify me. I was listening to NPR the other day and they were talking about Raymond Chandler and they said what was scary about some of these great crime dramas wasn’t that someone was bleeding to death on the floor but that he was trying to pick up a paperclip off a table that had a polish to it, as he’s dying, trying to pick this paperclip up and that it was this awful, real moment. That makes no sense, I don’t know. But the point is that it’s the psychological element that terrifies me and that’s what I think really exists strongly in this movie. To me it feels nostalgic to some of those great Hitchcock films. It definitely gives a nod to many of those. So I’m happy to be a part of that.

Cameron, what are you looking forward to doing on ‘The Green Hornet’?

CD: A lot of things. I’m very excited to work with Michel Gondry and with Seth Rogen. I’m just really excited about it.

Do you get to be funny in that, too?

CD: I’ll tell you when it happens.

What kind of charge do you get, Cameron, from being around the fans down here?

CD: Oh, it’s great. My favorite part so far has been the signing of all the posters for the fans that came through. It was so great. Everyone is so kind and so generous. They’re so happy to see us and they’re excited about the film. So it’s nice to be around people who are really positive and excited about the filmmaking process.

Has anyone given you any cool memorabilia?

CD: No, not yet. I’d like to.

12:43: Did you pull from the books for the movie?: “The setting is from the books, but the actual narrative is unique to the movie. Lionel came up with it to sell it to the studios. The idea comes from the books and there is stuff he referred to in the books.”

12:40: What did you find the most challenging about your roles?: Downey: “This is how sick I am, I don’t think anything can be too challenging. I have an illness of too much confidence. The challenging thing was the controlled chaos of the set. It was British so it was a very civilized chaos.”

12:38: How much did you use from the books as reference for the movie and how you played the roles?: McAdams: “I combed over the ten pages Irene was in over and over again.”

12:33: What was it like working with Jude Law’s mustache?” “This is the question we have all been waiting for. We didn’t really get along. Actually, he has the best ‘stache ever! That guy knows how to rock a ‘tache!”

12:29: Q&A begins: “What was it like to be involved in such a period piece. How did you do the role of Sherlock justice?” Downey Jr. “Lionel had been trying to garnish some interest in Sherlock. When people started to see it in a different light, they got excited about it. We knew it had to be done in the period and roll up our sleeves to do Sherlock justice. We worked our asses off. We took it really, really seriously and that’s why we are so proud of it.”

12:25: Silver: “Downey is really genius in his role, he’s genius is every role, and Jude and Rachel were amazing, and we hope you love it.” RDJ jokes about being a method actor and then says who he was misrepresented in earlier versions of him, most likely because of the times and budgets. Sounds like he has to play another role where he’s getting high, drunk, or worse. McAdam’s says about her character is great because “she’s different than other women of her time…she beats Sherlock at his own game and it’s the first time a woman has ever done that and they develop a unique love affair in which they outdo one another all the time.”

12:22: Just saw the scene, more like the trailer we’ve already seen on steroids. Lots of nearly falling off bridges, explosions and the lot. There is a really cool fight scene which explains the scene and then does it. The producers Joel Silver and Susan Downey just walked on stage, Rachel McAdams and back on stage RDJ who adds “I guess that played alright.”

12:13: Time for Sherlock Holmes! Robert Downey Jr. takes the stage before ANYONE else. No intro needed! As RDJ keeps scratching his ear he as he talks about how he’s amazed they let him play Holmes and calls him the first “western martial artist.” Why was there such a delay for this getting off the ground, “casting.” So glad we have you! And McAdams and the fabulous Jude Law….

12:09: Creepy guy is asking a question again, “What was the chemistry like?” Brolin “You’re so sweet, I want to make a joke but I can’t. Want to come back on the plane with us? (he then starts to blow kisses at him and make faces). Want to go get a tattoo? Are you walking up here because I have a wife. Uh-Oh.”

12:05: Megan Fox “This is really bad-ass. Josh you were the man in this movie (then remembers) oh yeah Jennifer’s Body comes out first, go see that too.” Someone has taught her (cough…Bay) well. FirstShowing guy is back “If you could pretend to be that attracted to Jonah Hex with that make-up, could you be attracted to me?” Fox: “Yes.”

12:02: Director confirms that there are some super-natural elements but no army of zombies or anything. When asked what was the most difficult part of this film. Brolin responded that “New Orleans. Hard to get the crew on set… It looks like a 70 million film and yet we had less than half of that… This wasn’t a big paycheck by any means, it was truly for the love of insanity.” Fox keeps pursing her lips, driving me mad.

12:00: Megan Fox talks about who she plays in the film, “I don’t know why they chose me.” Brolin “Really?” She then goes on to say that she plays “Lyla” which she thinks is the final name and then adds that she and Jonah Hex “they have a push and pull, fucked up relationship.” And then Brolin goes back to “The Goonies…” Fassbender, definitely sounds like he’s the most excited about the film “I almost got to kill Megan, I think I really should have, but they wouldn’t let me.” Sadly, the audience didn’t laugh, but they SHOULD HAVE.

11:56: The clip is extremely graphic and really intense. Michael Fassbender, Megan Fox, and Josh Brolin all just joined the stage. Someone yelled out “Goonies forever” and Brolin responded with “Really?” He says that he “likes that the studios were nervous about it… and I’m really happy the way it came out. Fuckin’ eh right?… Wow there’s a lot of people, that’s gnarly.”

11:50: Time for some Jonah Hex! The director Jimmy Hayward just came out on stage and he’s SWEATY and very excited. He’s introducing the scene. Just finished shooting 48 hours ago. First time ANYTHING has been seen. Be back soon.

11:49: Someone just found a poster under their seat and was given a “the box” signed by Kelly, and guess what people…. she pushed the button.

11:46: Kelly is asked what it’s like to work with such a big studio on this one: “I’m just grateful to still be working. Cameron signing onto this film saved my life. I got to do a big studio film and have a film that grosses more than $1 million at US box offices.”

11:44: Marsden adds: “I like to be able to play Cyclops and then turn around and do Hairspray.” What about starring in another Superman? “You probably know more than I do!” Then FirstShowing dude yet again gets up and hits on Diaz with silly-puddy in his ear.

11:35: Marsden talks about why he took the role, “someone dies every minute, someone just died right now.” Wow, way to depress us. Diaz adds “the film talks about who are we as a person, a society, that my head kind of went (motions to being blown away)”. Great! And then she hits of they scary stalker dude who creamed himself when he saw her in the The Mask. Where the hell is Langella?

11:32: Just saw the trailer, really insane! I can’t tell if it’s genius or completely stupid. Director Richard Kelly, Cameron Diaz, and James Marsden have all just stepped out on stage. Based off a short story “Button Button” which was originally published in Playboy (even thought the director claims to have read it somewhere else.) triggered something in Kelly and he optioned it 6 years ago and finally figured out how to crack the story. They had to set it in 1976.

11:27: Up now. THE BOX! Director Richard Kelly is here to introduce a 4 and half minute sequence with a score for the film from band Arcade Fire.

11:24: Fuller: “The movie we’ve made is horrifying. It’s terrifying and different from all of our other movies.” If you do say so yourself. Someones got some confidence.

11:23: Who would win in a fight? Rorschach, Freddy or the guy from Little Children? The audience thinks Rorschach.

11:19: Haley, why do you always play either someone who is either a tortured child or torturing children: “That’s one way to look at it. I feel like I’m doing things that are very diverse. I used to play the tortured soul and now I’m playing to torturing soul.”

11:11: Elm Street up next! Producers on their way out. Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, and Samuel Bayer to be joined soon by Jackie Earle Haley. They just screened the new trailer. REALLY freaky! Some definite big jumps and yelps from the audience. Hayley just walked out and says “I can’t tell you how thrilled I was that you guys wanted me to play Freddy. One of the most iconic figures AFTER playing Rorschach.” (Big cheers from this crowd) Apparently “it’s scary, a little darker and this guy right here (Hayley) was amazing.” Fuller adds “This isn’t an origins story, we’re basing our own mythology based off Wes Craven’s story.

11:10: Gary is asked about always playing the bad guy and responds with: “I guess those are the ones they remember you by. It really is what comes through the letterbox. If I see I can do something with it, then I’m in. ” When is the next Batman?” “We start shooting next year so we’re at least 2 years away.”

11:08: Denzel talks about how he worked on the film for a long time. He put in six months of training into the film and did ALL his own fights. Who says he’s too old for stunts!

11:05: When asked what the chemistry was like on set they started talking about accents and Oldman responded by saying: “Sometimes when I’m doing scenes, sometimes I do it in an English accent, African-American slang, or as a Thespian. You know like good sex!”

11:00: According to Allen the film “takes place 30 years in the future, there’s been a major war. Denzel’s character Eli is on a mission. Gary wants something that he has.” Gary chimes in,”And I want it badly.” Denzel says, “Hence the problem.” Denzel adds ” We shot the movie in New Mexico.” Guy in the audience yelled out “You’re the man Denzel” and he responded “My nigga!” Gary Oldman was asked about why he took the role and he said: “I read the script, met with Allen and Albert, and I’m a fan of Denzel.”

10:56: We just saw the official teaser trailer for the film, and it looks amazing! The Book of Eli cast; Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis and Denzel Washington are now on stage.

10:53: Allen and Albert Hughes have just come the stage after they showed a video intro to the graphic novel Billy, which ended with a live action shot of Gary Oldman laughing maniacally like only he can.

10:47: They just showed five scenes including an intro to the character Carol (voiced by James Gandolfini), the character KW and a lot of the amazing special effects, ranging from the dessert to the oceans and the amazing fort that they built.

10:33: Max Records just came out! He’s the young star of the film, and his reaction is “Wow, these are a lot of people.”

10:29: It’s Warner Bros time! First thing up is Where the Wild Things Are! Here’s a short video with author Maurice Sendak (author) and Spike Jonze. In the clip, Sendak said, “He’s impressed me very much.” He’s done it like me. The movie takes nothing but enhances my book. Jonze is not afraid of himself as an artist.”

10:27: They are going to give out tickets to audience members that will allow them to get free items from the Warner Bros booth! Nice marketing! Give out free stuff!

10:25: The director of programming has just stepped on to the floor to make some general announcements. Yay (sarcasm)!

10:23: They must have heard me! Some random guy just came on the stage and said, “Hey guys, we’re going to start in a few minutes.”He must have known I was getting restless.

10:23: We’re still waiting for the panel to start, what’s the deal people?

10:17 am: We’re here at day two of Comic-Con 2009! Once again we’re sitting in Hall H at the Convention Center waiting for the Warner Bros panel to start. They just flashed the WB logo on the screen and the crowd cheered. Woo hoo!

A couple of new posters have been released for the upcoming thriller The Box, and the comic based Kick-Ass. The Box stars Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Oscar nominee Frank Langella. The story centers on a married couple who receive a mysterious wooden box that can change their lives for the better while ending the life of someone else. Kick-Ass is a comic book adaptation about a teenage boy who goes from a student by day to vigilante at night. It stars Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Check out the full length posters for both films after the jump.

I really like both of these posters. The dash of color in the center of The Box, speaks volumes in terms of the film’s subject matter. The Box hits theaters this fall on October 30, while Kick-Ass‘ release date is still TBA. Perhaps they will reveal that at this year’s Comic Con?

Are you ready for THE BOX! It might not sound scary at first, but don’t worry, it is. From Richard Kelly, the writer and director of Donnie Darko, comes another eerie film about a couple put in an extraordinary circumstance. The film stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as a normal suburban husband and wife who get a visit from a man (Frank Langella) who gives them a wooden box.

Check out the trailer below…

Synopsis: A mysterious stranger, delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world; someone they don’t know. With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the cross-hairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity.

Normally I would toss this aside as another run-of-the-mill horror film, but Kelly has been able to deliver great things in the past, so I’m eager to see what he’s come up with. What about you?

Does this film look like a one of a kind film like Donnie Darko? Or another cliched horror film?

The Box hits theatres on October 30th.

I’m sure we’d all like to know upfront who’s going to be present at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, but unfortunately it doesn’t happen that way. Usually details roll out little by little months before the annual event takes place. So far the biggest news came from the announcement a while back that New Moon would have a panel, and now over at /Film they’ve found some more exhibition goodies to share.

Richard Kelly, the man who brought you Donnie Darko revealed that he would make an appearance at this year’s convention to promote his upcoming film, The Box. It stars Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, and Frank Langella and is described as a sci-fi thriller. The three actors and director will be on hand for the film’s panel on Friday, July 24th at the Warner Bros presentation.

Speaking of the WB, there are rumors circulating that there may be a secret preview screening of James McTeigue’s Ninja Assassin (I hope so, I need this film in my life)!

On the indie film front, Derrick Comedy’s movie Mystery Team will have a booth on the convention floor, as well as a screening, and a panel presentation. Writers/stars Dominic Dierkes, Donald Glover, and DC Pierson, producer Meggie McFadden, and director/editor Dan Eckman will all be present to interact with the fans.

So far so good! I’m the most excited for any and everything that has to do with Ninja Assasin. I hope the speculation about a secret screening is more fact than fiction.

What are you looking forward to at this year’s Comic Con? Who do you want to hold a panel presentation?
