Pick of the Week: The Blind Side

The film that finally got Sandra Bullock her Oscar and all the horrible media attention that folllowed. The Blind Side director, John Lee Hancock tells the story of a homeless boy, Michael Oher, who is a great football player. With the help of a loving family he ends up a first round NFL draft pick. Quintin Aaron stars as Michael. It’s nice to see Bullock get the recognition that she deserves.

Funny, sexual, and full of good looking people. Forgetting Sarah Marshall, directed by Nicholas Stoller, is not the best movie in the world when it comes to plot but it sure is entertaining. The romantic comedy stars funnyman Jason Segel, Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis.

If you’re a George Clooney fan (and really, who isn’t?) this week equals DVD nirvana as two of his films from last year will debut to join recent release Up In The Air in DVD bins everywhere. There’s also a little movie starring an actress you might have heard of named Sandra Bullock. It’s not like she’s been in the news that much this year, but chances are you may remember her from Speed and want to check her out in Best Picture nominee The Blind Side on DVD. Plus there’s another classic AMC series, a not-so-classic AMC series, and a special edition DVD worth mentioning!

The Blind Side

This year Sandra Bullock rose from the ashes of bad romantic comedies and action films to become a bonified A-Lister.

With two massive hits (this film and The Proposal) and a notable amount of critical acceptance, ultimately resulting in an Oscar. You can now buy her $200MM Oscar winning smash on DVD and watch the performance that changed her career.

Then there’s George Clooney. Hard to argue with the year he’s had. Oscar nomination, continuing success, a girlfriend who can’t speak English, the guy has it all!

Most underrated on that list; however, was this film, which not only gave Up a run for its Best Animated Feature money, but also returned Wes Anderson to his status as a top filmmaker after The Darjeeling Limited threw that off the rails, literally.

But back to Clooney. Clearly we don’t need a poll asking whether or not you’d like to be him, but here’s a question that may inspire even more debate. Well, at least among the first two choices:

TV ON DVD

“Mad Men”: Season 3

Last week, AMC gave us the second season of its superb “Breaking Bad.” Now it completes a one-two punch by offering up the third season of its sterling “Mad Men,” which begs the question – can a network with only two series be the best network on television?

This is kind of the Ringo Starr corollary: Ringo only wrote two songs as a member of The Beatles – “Octopus’s Garden” and “Don’t Pass Me By” – and both of them were good. He never had a “Revolution 9″ or a “Wild Honey Pie” or an “Only a Northern Song” to blot his resume. That means, batting average wise, he was the best Beatle. Two songs, both good, no strikeouts.

That’s sort of what AMC has become – the Ringo Starr of television networks. Sure it doesn’t have the long list of shows like cable top dogs FX, HBO, and Showtime, but it also never made anything as horrendous as the last season of “Entourage” or “Testees” or “The Tudors”

So when you buy your “Mad Men” Season 3 DVD and begin to wonder if AMC is in fact the best television channel, ask yourself this – Was Ringo Starr the best Beatle?

The African Queen - Commemorative Box Set

This is one of those movies that you see on so many “Best Of” lists that you get ready to watch and log on to Netflix, only to discover that it isn’t available on DVD. Now, the wait is finally over, as Paramount has found a print worthy enough to transfer onto the DVD format, and they’ve done it in a handsome collection with all the Hepburn and Bogart bells & whistles including many special features.

This film is essentially a must-buy for fans of classic cinema. And since it comes in a two-disc collector set, it really is a no-brainer.

ABC Family Grabs Alice in Wonderland TV Rights

Walt Disney Pictures has made a TV deal with ABC Family regarding the television rights to Tim Burton’s 3D Fantasy, Alice in Wonderland. The movie debuted this past weekend with a ridiculous three day total of $116.3 million domestically. With that type of success it’s no surprise that ABC wanted to get it while it’s hot.

The cable network is owned by Disney so it’s not that surprising that they’ve secured the TV rights to the film. The one piece of uncertainty overshadowing this purchase is the the 3D aspect of the movie. ABC Family hasn’t decided whether or not the film will be telecast in 3D or 2D.

Also on the horizon for ABC, who’s small slate of acquired features includes the Harry Potter franchise, are the TV rights to John Lee Hancock‘s The Blind Side for which Sandra Bullock won Best Actress at the Oscars.

Both features are set to debut on the small screen in 2012. We’re not sure how much was paid out for the rights but we’re hearing that properties of this magnitude cost around $24 million. A small price to pay for two films that have grossed over 200 million dollars worldwide.

Oscar Winner 2010: Best Actress – Sandra Bullock

The winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Actress goes to Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side. The actress was the front runner in the category this year and previously won the Golden Globe for this role. She thanked her mother and her fellow nominees, especially her “lover” Meryl Streep. It was emotional and humorous at the same time and for the rest of her life she’ll be cited as Academy Award winner, Sandra Bullock.

The nominees for Best Actress were:

Sandra Bullock – The Blind Side – Based on the humble beginnings of Michael Oher, an abandoned inner city kid who’s mother is a drug addict and father is no where to be found. A family friend finds a way to enter him into an upscale private school due to his size and athletic ability. While there he struggles with his grades, sleeps in the gym, and wears the same outfit on a daily basis. During a rainy walk from school, he’s discovered by the Tuohy family and slowly becomes a permanent staple in their lives. Throughout his stay, he’s given a tutor to help with his studies, a shot a college education, and a chance to play professional football in the NFL.

Helen Mirren – The Last Station - A historical drama that illustrates Russian author Leo Tolstoy’s struggle to balance fame and wealth with his commitment to a life devoid of material things.

Carey Mulligan – An Education – A coming-of-age story set in the 1960’s about a teenage girl who lives in the suburbs of London. Her life is turned into a dream when a charming playboy nearly twice her age shows up and changes her life forever.

Gabourey Sibide – Precious – (Based on the novel Push by Sapphire) Precious is set in Harlem. The story centers around an overweight, illiterate teen who is pregnant with her second child, who is invited to enroll in an alternative school in hopes that her life can head in a new direction.

Meryl Streep – Julie & Julia – Based on the bestselling memoirs of Julia Child (Meryl Streep) and Julie Powell (Amy Adams), two characters, separated by time are brought together through the love of cooking. Julie, in her time of need decides to use Julia’s cookbook and life story as her inspiration to start a blog that eventually would lead to her own success.

Looks like A Christmas Carol will slowly but surely make it’s money back and then some, especially if it has enough hold to make it to Christmas (which I’m guessing it will).

I’m also guessing (hoping) that Everybody’s Fine will begin to creep up the charts when it gets a wider release considering the fact that it stars Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, and Sam Rockwell. Those four names that alone should be enough to pull in viewers even if it’s a smaller film.

If you’re a movie coming out this weekend that doesn’t have a vampire or a werewolf as its central character, you’re screwed. No one stands a chance against the Goliath that is New Moon, but here are a list of today’s opening releases that will more than likely be overshadowed by drawn on abs and red contacts.

If you’re looking for a heart-warming drama, check out Sandra Bullock‘s new film, The Blind Side, and for a more kid-friendly vibe there’s the animated alien feature, Planet 51. In 2006 Michael Lewis released a book entitled, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game that told the tough story of professional football player Michael Oher and his journey to the NFL. The book was adapted into a feature, and centers on a young and homeless Oher (Quinton Aaron) who is taken in by the affluent Tuohy family in Memphis, Tennessee. He isn’t so much a delinquent as he is misguided, and the film highlights how they gave him the direction to reach his full potential in sports and in life.

The Players:

The Plot:

The Blind Side is based on the humble beginnings of Michael Oher, an abandoned inner city kid who’s mother is a drug addict and father is no where to be found. While there he struggles with his grades, sleeps in the gym, and wears the same outfit on a daily basis. Throughout his stay, he’s given a tutor to help with his studies, a shot a college education, and a chance to play professional football in the NFL.

The Good:

Ray McKinnon: This Oscar winner (Best Short Film, The Accountant) stars as Coach Cotton, one of the driving forces behind Michael’s football success. McKinnon pulls off the right balance of sincerity and selfishness in his role. Initially, Cotton sees Oher as an amazing career opportunity, but he eventually sheds that desire to put the player’s future in front of his own.
Humor: This movie is a lot more lighthearted than one would expect. Going off the trailer, you get the impression that this will be a tear jerker along the lines of Rudy or even Friday Night Lights, but it’s not. There are a lot of comedic moments especially between the family that make this film refreshing but not depressing.
Closing Credit Sequence: This may seem like an odd thing to point out, but after the film comes to an end, the closing credit sequence is the cherry on top. It features photos of the real life Tuohy clan, along with Michael throughout the years. There’s even footage from Oher’s drafting ceremony into the NFL, which is beyond priceless.

The Bad:

The Screenplay: There’s nothing about this story that makes it stand out amongst other films that have similar premises. It follows a formula that we’ve seen time and time again in not only the sports genre, but drama, comedy and everywhere in between.
The Supporting Actors: For the most part, the main cast did decent work, but everyone around them appeared to be phoning in their performances. In particular, the group of “street thugs” from Oher’s old neighborhood were cast very badly. You could tell that these were professionally trained actors trying to do their best thug impressions. Their dialogue was stereotypical, and you could actually see the disbelief on their faces as they delivered each line.

Overall:

The Blind Side is not your typical, sappy drama. It has plenty of lighthearted moments to keep you on the up and up, in an otherwise generic sports tale. The story isn’t terrible, but leaves much room for improvement. Don’t go into this movie thinking that you’ll see a lot of football action, because you won’t. This film concentrates more on Oher’s family and school life than the actual sport. This may be something that appeals to those who aren’t fans of the game, but may turn off those who are.

Rating: 6/10

Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side Interview

This weekend, Sandra Bullock will be stepping into the world of films that are “based on a true story,” with her latest work, The Blind Side. The Rookie director John Lee Hancock takes on the book of the same name about an impoverished kid, who found personal and professional success through the compassion of a well off suburban family.

Bullock stars as Leigh Anne Tuohy, a woman who makes her own rules and expects everyone else to play by them. Through the film, the actress wears expensive clothes, gaudy jewelry, and sports a bright blond dye job from root to tip. We spoke to Bullock about the pressure of playing a real person as opposed to a fictional character, what she looks for in a movie role, and why she’s decided to take it slow at this point in her career.

Earlier this year you had a huge hit with The Proposal, these days what do you look for in a movie for a role?

Proposal, um aside from all the right people and right elements I think nudity had a great deal to do with that [laughs]. Had I known that, I would have done it a long time ago. In picking roles, my way of choosing is vastly different now than it was a long time ago, but I can only be that way because of what I learned from the past. I’m choosing now, not to choose any work because when you’ve had such a nice ride, unexpected ride, fulfilling ride you really don’t want to take a step backwards. So, it’s really made me satisfied in a way that I wasn’t really looking for, but I was blessed with it and now I feel really full in a good way where I don’t need to rush out and go find something. I don’t want to.

When did the selection process change for you?

Well, the fact that I’m staring at a stack of scripts and I can’t bear to open them. I don’t want to step into that world right now. I want to enjoy where I am. I think it was over time just having good life experiences, that I was actually cognisant of my work and was very satisfied with it and I just want to enjoy the ride instead of blasting forward and trying to fill a void that doesn’t exist in the workplace.

How did you prepare to play someone who is a real person but isn’t famous?

That’s a tough one because I do think I tried to get as close – I mean you don’t meet an energy like Leigh Anne’s ever. She might not be famous here, but she’s known in other places and I think I felt a great sense of fear in trying to tackle that person she is, but also a great sense of obligation to be true to this wonderful dynamic, because John [Lee Hancock] couldn’t explain Leigh Anne to save his life. When I met Leigh Anne I said ‘Now I know why you can’t because she’s original.’ But there’s such a dynamic that exists between those people and their children that you wanted to pay homage to them. I wanted to as closely as I could so I did my best.

What was it about the character of Leigh Anne that appealed to you as an actress, before you actually met her?

Initially, when I was approached with the film it was a beautifully written story, you could see it play out. I didn’t know how to play Leigh Anne. I didn’t know how to approach it, or what I could bring to it so I just kept saying ‘No this is not going to work for me.’ John said in one of our meetings ‘why don’t you come meet Leigh Anne.’ I met Leigh Anne for the whole day and I left there completely exhausted because of the energy she had, but in love with this human being.

Earlier you spoke about slowing down your acting career, but what about your role as a producer?

To me, the producing falls into the same category as acting, it requires so much time out of your life and I take it very personally I realize. So if I do something, it just has to be something I love and I don’t want anybody else to do. When I open projects maybe something will appeal to me, I think I’m not opening them because I don’t want anything to appeal to me right now. I’m so happy where I’m at right now.

What was it about the story that really resonated with you the most?

First of all, it was a beautifully executed book especially for someone who’s been around football players her whole life and still knew nothing or cared anything about the game. I was in such awe of what it takes to be an athlete, and what the coaches contribute to these children’s lives and how they support and push and inspire. I had a real sense of jealousy that they got to experience that and I never did as an athlete or someone who was able to be brought to that point. But even though I didn’t think I could make this movie, the inspiring part is here’s this family that does this, didn’t do it because someone was writing an article, or a book, or making a movie. They did it because that’s where the instinct said this is what we’re going to do.

Do you think that’s a testament to the human spirit and how much good we can do?

We don’t trust anyone who does anything nice, that’s just the sad world we live in, but they didn’t care. They kept going and it makes you feel like you need to step up your game. Whatever wonderful actress was going to play Leigh Anne Tuohy it was going to be an inspirational story, a true life story that we’re capable of so much more than we think we are because we don’t really live in a world that supports the good that we can do. They all want us to do something bad so it sells some papers or a news report.

After playing this character, did it change your view on certain things?

One of my biggest questions was how people use their faith and their religion as a banner and then they don’t do the right thing, and then they go ‘I’m a good Christian and I go to church and this is the way you should live your life’ and I told Leigh Anne and I said it in a live interview we had I said, one of largest concerns at the end of this was that whole banner holding. I said, it scared me because I’ve had experiences that haven’t been great, I don’t buy a lot of people who use that as their shield, and she was open and honest and forthright and I said wow I’ve finally met someone who practices but doesn’t preach.

So meeting Leigh Anne has had a positive impact on your life personally?

We’re so quick to tell people how to live their lives and I’m so lucky that I’ve been able to stay on my path even though I’ve deviated some times but I’ve never felt like I was OK by it, 100%, it didn’t really matter but then you meet someone who blazes trails and they do it as a family and you feel validated for taking your trip rather than someone elses. She has no idea the path she’s begun in terms of adoption and fostering, it’s not been on the forefront of people’s minds. It is on the forefront of my mind everyday now when I get up. When I look around I go is he, is she, what is their situation? It’s because of this family and I think what their going to do for our country in terms of being aware of that, I don’t think they realize the profound effect that their going to have.

Can we talk about the fashion in this film? Were any of the clothes and jewelry exaggerated?

Hello! Everything I wore was what Leigh Anne wears. Every designer label was what Leigh Anne wears, every make up from her palette, her watch was her watch, her nightgown was her nightgown. I remember sending an email going John you gotta email Leigh Anne and ask her what nightgown she wears and John was like ‘eh’ because he knew what the reply was going to be, so all he gets back from Leigh Anne is [in Southern accent] ‘Ya”ll need to get a life’ [laughs].

This weekend vampires won’t be the only ones tackling the box office. Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw will both star in The Blind Side, an inspirational sports story about professional football player Michael Oher. The film is based on the book of the same name, which was penned by Michael Lewis, and adapted for the screen by writer- director John Lee Hancock. A featurette has just been released that includes interviews from the cast as well as the real Michael Oher who is portrayed by Quinton Aaron in the film.

As previously stated, The Blind Side is based on a true story about a well off family who took in an impoverished youth off the streets of Memphis. That youth became a football sensation at his high school, and ended up playing at a collegiate level, which kicked off his NFL career. Bullock stars as Leigh Anne Tuohy, the woman who single handedly made it her business to get Oher off the streets and into her home. Not that many people would give such a helping hand to a perfect stranger, but the Tuohy family did just that.

The Blind Side hits theaters on Friday, November 20, 2009.

New Trailer For The Blind Side

Sandra Bullock is trading in romantic comedy for a full-blown sports drama (great!). From The Rookie director, John Lee Hancock comes The Blind Side, a true story based on the real life events of All-American football star Michael Oher. The film is scheduled for release on November 20th, and we have the official poster and a new trailer which is just as good as the first one, if not better.

This second trailer starts on a much lighter note than the previous one, by showing off Bullock’s sassy character as a woman who refuses to be pushed around. This time we actually see a glimpse of Michael Oher’s (Quinton Aaron) harsh childhood, and I’ll admit I got a little teary eyed.

The Blind Side also stars Tim McGraw (Friday Night Lights) and Oscar-winner Kathy Bates. The good thing about this film is that the director knows what he’s doing when it comes to these types of dramas. Not only did Hancock helm The Rookie, but he also wrote the screenplay for this film, which was based on the book The Blind Side: Evolution of the Game.

While Bullock’s latest trade of love for sport might not come as a shock to many of us (especially after her last film bombed), we can all agree that Aaron’s portrayal of Michael Oher is a performance worth seeing.

I will admit, I rag on Sandra Bullock a lot for starring in lack luster romantic comedies, but her upcoming film The Blind Side is going for the uber dramatic. The film’s trailer was recently released, and it takes advantage of every opportunity to make you cry. The Blind Side is based on a true story about a mother and a wife who helps a young, impoverished teenager better his life. Tim McGraw co-stars in the film, which obviously takes place in the South due to the strong accents being displayed.

The film is set for release on November 20th. I’m assuming the studio is trying to gain some momentum off of the holiday season. Is it just me or did this trailer lay it on pretty thick? I mean it was really, really melodramatic. They even had The Fray’s song, “How to Save a Life” playing in the beginning. The only thing that could have made this sadder, is if Coldplay‘s Chris Martin came in with some vocals.
