Weekend Box Office: The American Takes Down Takers

Take that! Take that! Take that! George Clooney and his lone rifle took down Idris Elba and Paul Walker’s entire crew over the Labor Day weekend. They’ve still got Monday to rake in more dough but so far The American has topped the charts earning over 12 million dollars from Friday to Sunday. It’s a weak start but it was strong enough to hold off both Takers and Machete’s $11 million.

Note the above image: with eyebrows raised, George Clooney and his gun dart to the rescue, while the Catholics stand by in sheer terror! I applaud those responsible for the array of deceiving advertisements that feature this exact photo. I, too, was enticed by this gripping shot – though know now, this image captures one of the only exciting moments in the entire film. Based on Martin Booth’s A Very Private Gentlemen, Focus Features presents their latest “suspense thriller”: The American.

The Plot:

Jack (Clooney), a seasoned assassin, is constantly on the move/under attack. After a job in Sweden ends in unexpected disaster (including a bullet to his girlfriend’s skull) Jack retreats to the Italian countryside to work on a more low-key assignment: constructing a weapon for a mysterious contact, Mathilde. Happy to finally reside in a danger-free zone, Jack befriends a local priest and falls in love with a local prostitute (very New Testament!). All seems relatively peaceful at surface level, but is it really possible for Jack to put his precarious existence as an international assassin on hold? Of course not!

The Bad:

Pacing: Two words… snooze cruise. The writing confirms that the story should have peaked in multiple places, but the film felt painfully uneventful. The material is there, but was both poorly executed and edited. The whereabouts of Jack’s mission were a little ambiguous (hence, the attempted suspense), but ultimately his objectives were too clandestine to be enjoyed. This coupled with the dragged out shots and slow, awkward cuts reduced any sense of flow – and with “suspense thrillers,” pacing is everything. The movie feels more like a collection of aimless, disjointed scenes than a feature film.
Jack: The character of Jack (whom the story is centered around) has very little dialogue, which isn’t always bad – sometimes having a character show us who they are and what they’re up to is far more engaging than having them choke us with declarative statements of self. But this character and Clooney’s performance offers no sense of identity. He barely emotes at all, which one could argue as a character choice – I’ll instead argue it’s a total lack of arc.
Boring: Few things actually occur in this film other than weapon construction, sex with a prostitute, and serious espresso drinking.
Tone: The dismal color palettes, boring location, and dry score just enhance the overall mundaneness of the film.

The Good:

Timeless Hotness: Sexiness doesn’t age for Mr. Clooney – the man is 49 and still making women squeal. Impressive.

Overall:

The American is one of the worst films of the year. You’d be a fool to waste your money.

Rating: 1/10

George Clooney in The American Featurette

Do you want to watch George Clooney prepare to murder someone? He’s always had looks that could kill, but it turns out his weapon of choice is a gun and not his face. For his upcoming film The American, he plays one of the best of the best in the world of assassins and over at Yahoo, they’ve released a new featurette that delves into his twisted character and this twisted story…

If you sift through all the compliments that everyone is giving Clooney, you can see Grant Heslov who serves as one of the film’s producers. Heslov not only produces films but he’s a veteran actor and he also directs. As a matter of fact he co-starred with Clooney in Leatherheads and directed him in last year’s The Men Who Stare at Goats. He has a very impressive resume, that many people don’t know about.

As the video states, The American’s director Anton Corbijn comes from a background in photography so we’re anxious to see the photo book that goes along with the film. The shots look amazing with their color and composition and tone. The film takes on a dirty and gritty subject like murder and illustrates it in a very polished and pristine way. The magic of cinematography always amazes us.

The American is scheduled to hit theaters on September 1st.

Most George Clooney fans are used to the Oscar winning actor’s killer smile and his brooding eyes but in his latest film his weapon of choice is a rifle. The first trailer has been released for The American where he plays a professional assassin who takes lives for money. Check out George and his deadly aim below…

In The American Clooney plays Jack, a master craftsman who takes on his last assignment before resigning for good. He holds up on the Italian countryside while awaiting the details of his new job but ends up falling in love with a native woman and forming an unconventional friendship with a priest.

How much do you want to bet that Jack’s new lady will be the cause of his downfall? Isn’t that how these things always play out. A man with a heart of stone gets soft when a woman catches his eye and it opens him up to all kinds of strife. It’s the same sad song.

The American is directed by Anton Corbijn and scheduled for release on September 1, 2010.

Focus Features Announces Release Dates

Several movies that were on the pending release slate for Focus Features have been given the go ahead. According to Variety, the fate of six films have been made public so we now know when to expect The Eagle of the Ninth, The American, Babies, Somewhere, Greenberg, and It’s Kind of a Funny Story.

The first quarter of the year will start out with Noah Baumbach’s film Greenberg, which is headlined by Ben Stiller on March 12th in a limited run. That will be followed by Thomas Balmes’ Babies, which opens in select theaters on April 16th. The American, which has George Clooney playing a highly killed assassin will hit theaters nationwide on September 1st, while Kevin Macdonald’s Roman epic The Eagle of the Ninth will open in the third quarter.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s It’s Kind of a Funny Story is slated for sometime in November and last but not least, Sofia Coppola’s drama Somewhere has yet to be placed in a specific quarter, so at the moment it’s in limbo.

Out of all of these films the most anticipated would probably be The American or Eagle of the Ninth. It’s odd that something of that caliber hasn’t been given a specific date yet. Granted Channing Tatum‘s acting isn’t the best in the world but the subject matter of the film and his fan base should be enough to make it a hit.

A few photos and story details have been released for some of the most highly anticipated films of 2010. Over at Collider, they’ve premiered images from The Fighter, Eagle of the Ninth, The American, and Somewhere. We’ve also got a couple of shots of Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel in their upcoming fantasy film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, there’s so much to take in!

Here’s the rundown on each film:

The American

George Clooney plays Jack, an assassin held up in Europe awaiting his next big gig. Instead of staying put and following orders, he seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto and pursues a romance with local woman Clara. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

The Fighter

The Fighter is a boxing film that stars Christian Bale as Dicky Eklund, the brother of Mark Wahlberg’s ”Irish” Mickey Ward. After kicking a bad drug habit, Eklund turns his life around and helps his brother train and win the world lightweight boxing championship.

Eagle of the Ninth

The Eagle of the Ninth is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain. In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth.

Somewhere

Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is a bad-boy A-List actor stumbling through a life of excess while living at Hollywood’s legendary Chateau Marmont Hotel. His days are a haze of drinks, girls, fast cars and fawning fans. Cocooned in this celebrity-induced artificial world, Johnny has lost all sense of his true self. Until, that is, his 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) unexpectedly shows up and unwittingly begins to anchor him. Johnny’s fragile connection to real life slowly revives in her presence.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Even though the film is loosely based on the Disney classic Fantasia, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice takes place in present day Manhattan. In the film Nicolas Cage plays a contemporary sorcerer who leaves everything in the hands of his apprentice (Jay Barachel) when he goes on a trip. The novice is given several chores and tasks to perform in his absence but uses magic to get a broomstick to do them for him. Things go from good to bad when the inanimate object begins to develop a mind of it’s own.

A few photos have been found of George Clooney on the set of his latest film, The American. Last week, we filled you in on the actor’s casting in the Anton Corbijn feature, and he’s already on the job. After looking at these images, you can tell this isn’t the George we all know and love. He’s much rougher, and has an old school badass mentality.

Alone among assassins, Jack (played by Clooney) is a master craftsman. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry (Bruce Altman of this fall’s Peter and Vandy) that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten of Focus’ award-winning In Bruges), is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Italian screen and stage veteran Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues romance with local woman Clara (Italian leading lady Violante Placido). But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

For this to be a film about death and murder, it sure does have a beautiful setting. If I was an assassin I’d want to work on the country side too!

George Clooney Cast and On His Way to Shoot The American

George Clooney has just been cast in the lead role of director Anton Corbijn’s upcoming film, The American. I wonder how this will fit in with Clooney’s work on Hamdan V Rumsfeld? According to Focus, the suspense thriller based on Martin Booth’s novel, “A Very Private Gentleman” will be starting production this week in Italy (sounds like someone needed a trip to their Lake Como house).

Focus Features just sent over the following press release about the film…

The screenplay by Rowan Joffe is adapted from Martin Booth’s novel A Very Private Gentleman, published in 2005. The film’s producers are This is that’s Anne Carey, who most recently produced Adventureland and The Savages; Smokehouse’s Grant Heslov, an Academy Award nominee as producer and co-writer of Good Night, and Good Luck, and producer/director of this fall’s The Men Who Stare at Goats; Smokehouse’s Mr. Clooney; Ann Wingate, who most recently produced Into the Storm, starring Emmy Award winner Brendan Gleeson; and Jill Green, executive producer of the long-running U.K. television series Foyle’s War. Enzo Sisti, co-producer of the upcoming When in Rome, is executive producer of The American.
