Computers. As is the case with sentient robots, cinema has warned us repeatedly that the instant we give our Macs, iPads, X-Boxes and missile defense systems the ability to think on their own, that’s pretty much the end of humanity as we know it. Film after film, from sci-fi warnings to horror fantasias to action adventures, self-aware computers have been portrayed as instantly godlike beings who quickly recognize the obsolescence of human beings, and become hell-bent on our destruction (often sending California governors back in time to assassinate our teenage saviors). In fact, there have been so many berserker computers in cinema that we were able to cull together a list of our favorites—in the insane-computer-genre, these baddies rank as the best.

10. The Ultimate Computer (Superman III, 1983)

Ok, usually, in the berserk computer genre, it’s the computer that’s totally insane. There are, however, exceptions—such as the case in Superman III, in which it is the film itself that is, for lack of a better term, nuts. Imagine this: Supes foils new villain Ross Webster’s plans to control the world’s coffee bean supply (seriously, it gets even better). In a rage, Webster hires tech wiz Richard Pryor (really) to generate some Kryptonite, which accidentally splits Superman into two men—a “good” Supes and a bad “Supes.” Pryor then builds the Ultimate Computer, a device which should be able to zap both Supermen with a Kryptonite ray and kill them (deep breath, this is only half the madness). Pryor then changes his mind at the last minute and destroys the Ultimate Computer’s Kryptonite ray, and so the computer does the only logical thing—it eats Ross Webster’s sister and spits her out as a killer cyborg in the film’s most deranged scene. Yes, you read that right—ate her, and digested her as a cyborg. You just can’t top that.

9. ARIA (Eagle Eye,2008)

Let’s be honest—Eagle Eye is pretty overwhelmingly terrible. Its ridiculously convoluted story would take up about half this post, what with it’s tale of ARIA (that’s Autonomous Reconnaissance Intelligence Integration Analyst, to you), a self-aware missile defense system that can control any networked device in the world (from cell phones to automated construction cranes) that decides to wipe out the entire executive branch of the U.S. government because the president willfully bombed civilians in the middle east. What makes ARIA a keeper, then? Her ultimate goal (for reasons too confusing to go into here) includes the murder of Shia Labeouf and his twin brother. Two dead Shias for the price of one movie? Bless you, ARIA, bless you.

8. Queeg 500 (Red Dwarf, 1988)

In the oddball sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, we watch the cast and crew of the Red Dwarf starship get by with their “intelligent computer,” Holly. However, when Holly’s inefficiency (due to “computer senility”) puts the crew in danger, the back-up computer system, Queeg 500, kicks in to bring some efficiency to the RD. However, Queeg’s style leaves a little to be desired—he forces the crew to scrub the ship before any food will become available, and morning workouts become mandatory. After seemingly killing Holly, Queeg disappeares—turns out he was just a prank pulled by Holly, who wanted to teach the Red Dwarf crew a lesson about appreciating a slightly less efficient (but much less insane) computer.

7. Master Control Program (Tron, 1982)

Come on—it’s the original Tron. And it’s the villain, which is also cool. And it’s voiced by David Warner, which is even cooler. And it decides to—of course—take over the world because it can run things “900 to 1,200 times better than any human.” And it’s a giant spinning red face! So, to recap the MCP: Tron, bad guy, David Warner, world domination, big weird spinning head. How awesome is that?

6. Proteus IV (Demon Seed, 1977)

Scientist creates Proteus IV self-aware computer system to cure leukemia. Proteus IV grows and learns at an exponential rate. Proteus IV kidnaps scientist’s wife. Proteus IV (deep breath) impregnates scientist’s wife. Seriously, you just have to see it to believe it. Oh, and you’ll probably want to take about 50 showers afterwards.

5. “The Machines” (The Matrix franchise, 1999 – 2003)

There’s no real name for the collective of self-aware machine baddies who, after a prolonged war with humanity, eventually succeed and begin harvesting humans for the energy our bodies naturally generate. They did give a name for our prison, however—The Matrix, an artificial reality that keeps humans under control by allowing them to believe that they are living out their lives in the late 1990s. We see a few faces of the enemy throughout the franchise—from the evil, insane Agent Smith (who goes from policing the Matrix to attempting to control it) to the arrogant and pompous Architect (the program which designed the Matrix itself). And while the last couple of films in the series were major fumbles, the original Matrix—and the ominous, mysterious artificial intelligence that was behind it—remain high-water marks of sci-fi cinema.

4. WOPR/ Joshua (WarGames, 1983)

In WarGames, early ’80s teen hacker Matthew Broderick hacks into a computer system that he thinks is related to the video game industry, and begins playing several of the games, including one called Global Thermonuclear War. One problem, however: Broderick didn’t hack a gaming company, he contacted a self-aware system belonging to the U.S. military called WOPR (War Operation Plan Response), and WOPR isn’t playing any game—Global Thermonuclear War is a real program, and WOPR thinks that it is now at war with Russia. Broderick must then convince the entire U.S. military, along with the WOPR’s creator (who refers to it as “Joshua”) of what has happened, as well as convince WOPR/Joshua that it kinda sorta isn’t really totally necessary to go and start World War III, and to pretty please not obliterate Russia. An instant 80s classic.

3. V’Ger/ Voyager 6 (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, 1979)

In what is probably the most fascinating back story in this list, V’ger began life as Voyager 6, a 20th century NASA probe. One day, Voyager 6 flew into a massive black hole and ended up on the other side of the universe, where it encountered a planet populated only by “living machines.” Assuming that the primitive probe was some kind of kindred spirit, the machines programmed Voyager 6 (which they called V’ger, as the “oya” in Voyager was obscured by space-dust) to “learn all that was learnable,” and, once that was accomplished, “return to its creator.” So V’ger spends a few hundred years with an infinite storage capacity learning everything there is to know about the universe, becomes self-aware, and generates a forcefield cloud around itself the size of half our solar system. Then it decided to return to Earth to find its creator, which V’ger assumes is God. Instead, V’ger finds William Shatner’s hairpiece and Leonard Nimoy’s fake ears and decides to wipe out the Earth in a rage. All of which is yet another reason why we probably shouldn’t let our PCs get too religious, apparently.

2. SkyNet (The Terminator franchise, 1984 – 2009)

Really, Arnie said it best in Terminator 2:

In three years, Cyberdyne will become the largest supplier of military computer systems. All stealth bombers are upgraded with Cyberdyne computers, becoming fully unmanned. Afterwards, they fly with a perfect operational record. The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes online on August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware 2:14 AM, Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.

After that, SkyNet nukes, well, the whole planet, and deals with pesky resistance leader John Conner by sending cyborgs in the past to murder him as both a fetus and a teenage boy. Then SkyNet decided the best way to torture and destroy humanity would be by releasing some of the most awful sequels to great films ever, Terminator3 : Rise of the Machines, and Terminator: Salvation. Humanity has yet to recover.

1. HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968)

Come on—you knew Hal would be No. 1 on this list. An AI computer onboard a spaceship bound for Jupiter in a mission which may lead to the discovery of extraterrestrial life, Hal runs the day-to-day operations of the vessel. When the crew discover there may be a flaw in Hal’s circuitry, the smooth-talking computer does what any living would try to do—protect itself. However, Hal goes the extreme route, and decides killing the entire crew would be the smart way to go, before he begins to go a bit insane. But hey, when he finally does get shut down, he shuts down in style, singing a showtune as he slowly powers down. Both sympathetic and disturbing, Hal is king of the crazy computers.

What is your favorite out of control computer in cinema?

Jeez—the sixth Fast and Furious film continues to be the speedy little car sequels that keeps destroying the sequels to other franchises that should be long dead. Just as the upcoming Fast and Furious film’s scheduling requirements forced director Justin Lin to bail on production of the upcoming Highlander reboot, it has now also forced Lin to drop out of directing the upcoming fifth and six Terminator films.

I don’t know what is more shocking—the fact that the sixth Fast and Furious film is becoming like a sequel wrecking ball in Hollywood, or that fact that there are not one, but two Terminator sequels coming up—both involving Arnold Schwarzenegger!

According to /Film:

“After a couple years of slow-moving development, progress on Terminator 5 suddenly picked up earlier this year. Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Justin Lin both came aboard, indie financier Megan Ellison grabbed the rights and Lin began talking up what he’d like to see in the next installment of the franchise.

“In fact, the problem now may be that things are moving a little too fast. Lin has been forced to pull out of the project due to scheduling issues. There’s still a chance he could find his way back to the franchise, but only if Ellison and Schwarzenegger are willing to adjust their timeline to account for Lin’s busy schedule.”

As it turns out, Schwarzenegger and Ellison have to get the two sequels made before 2018, as that is when the rights to the Terminator franchise revert back to James Cameron, meaning that the franchise can’t wait for Lin to make room for it.

If I may make a subtle suggestion to resolved these issues, it would be this: DO NOT MAKE ANOTHER FAST AND FURIOUS, HIGHLANDER, OR TERMINATOR FILM. SERIOUSLY. JUST STOP.

What do you think of the Terminator news?

He’s back! Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger, has wrapped his stint as the governor of California, he can focus on more important things — acting. It always comes back to acting doesn’t it? Schwarzenegger officially announced via his Twitter that he’s throwing his hat back into the ring and now accepting job offers. Could one of them be the next Terminator film?

On February 10, Schwarzenegger tweeted, “Exciting news. My friends at CAA have been asking me for 7 years when they can take offers seriously. Gave them the green light today.” Shortly after his announcement was made, news about a new Terminator film appeared on Deadline. It suggested that another film may be in the works with room for Schwarzenegger to reprise the role that made him a star.

The site claims that a 24 page treatment has been written for a sixth Terminator film that’s rumored to be a director’s vehicle for Justin Lin. William Wisher, who collaborated with James Cameron on Terminator 2 penned the treatment and a four-page concept outline. His version continued the post-apocalyptic battleground scenario from Terminator Salvation, but added in the element of time travel.

Time travel is always a great way to bring back characters who died in previous installments. They could revive the original Terminator and even Sarah Connor if they really wanted to.

What do you think? Should Schwarzenegger return to acting? Are you interested in seeing another Terminator film?

The Terminator franchise has been f*cked six ways to Sunday and yet someone still manages to keep the property alive — in some form. According to a press release sent out by Hannover House they’re not done dragging the franchise through the mud. They’re going to take the character into the realm of animation with a big screen, CGI feature, that will of course be in 3D (sigh).

With all the push and pull that’s been surrounding the rights to Terminator, here’s are little background of Hannover’s history with the series.

Hemdale produced and distributed director James Cameron’s original “Terminator” feature, but released the sequel rights in 1990 to Carolco, which later transferred the rights to ultimately end up under the control of Halcyon Media. Santa Barbara based Pacificor, LLC prevailed in the most recent auction and transfer of rights to the franchise in January, and retains approval and licensing authority over the proposed Terminator 3000 project.

The storyline for Terminator 3000 is being kept under lock and key but they say that the violence will be turned down in order to maintain a PG-13 rating. Production is scheduled to begin in January 2011.

The last film installment, Terminator Salvation wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t a real Terminator movie at heart and a lot of that had to do with its PG-13 rating. Here they will continue that watered down tradition, animate it, and add 3D. How is this supposed to help the property?

What do you think of Terminator 3000 the animated movie?

The Terminator bidding war is officially over, and the two front runners, Lionsgate and Sony lost out to Pacificor. Who is Pacificor you ask? Apparently, they’re the new owners of one of the most ground breaking sci-fi film series of all time! Over at Deadline Hollywood, they exclusively broke the news that a final bid had been placed and received on behalf of the company. But, seriously who are these guys and where did they come from?

Lionsgate was the first studio to make their bid public and they had plans to produce “a complete re-boot, back to basics, with real emotional stories, and effects that will be secondary.” Oddly enough the winning bidder Pacificor was the debt holder who pushed former Terminator owners Halcyon Holding Corp into bankruptcy. According to Finke, “this is the same Pacificor whom Halcyon accused in a lawsuit of extortion, bribery, and fraud and demanded $30M in damages.”

Isn’t this an odd twist of fate? Sony and Lionsgate dropped out of the bidding war at just under 29.5 million when it was clear that Pacificor wouldn’t back down. After the ink is try on the contracts, Halcyon will receive $5 million for every Terminator movie made from now on, and they’ll retain the rich revenue streams from the movies Terminator 3 and 4. It sounds like this entire deal has come full circle, but the real question is what does this mean for the fans?

Will we ever see a good old fashioned, R-rated Terminator again?

What do you think of Sony and Lionsgate losing out on the Terminator rights?

The rights for the Terminator franchise are still up in the air as several studios and private production companies are trying to snatch up the property. The rights were taken away from previous owners, The Halcyon Group, when they found themselves in massive debt that they couldn’t repay. Now Terminator is on the auction block with Lionsgate showing interest, and Sony not far behind.

The latest update regarding the bidding war has Sony throwing their hat into the ring against Lionsgate who placed an offer early last month. The studio hasn’t released an official statement regarding their interest, but Variety is reporting that they’re in the game. The official auction will take place on Monday, followed by a bankruptcy hearing two days later.

Lionsgate has been named the “stalking horse,” and any other bidder who wants a chance to take the title will have to up the ante by at least $750,000. If Lionsgate loses out on its bid for the property by Sony or anyone else, they’ll receive that same amount as a breakup fee from the winning bidder.

Whenever they do decide to place the franchise into new hands, as a fan I hope they return it to its former glory. Make another R-rated, dark action drama about death and machines. That’s what made the first two so amazing. Between Lionsgate and Sony, it’s a toss up between who to trust because they’ve both done some shady things in the past when it comes to franchises. Spider-Man anyone?

Who do you think should own the rights to Terminator?

Last year the rights for the Terminator movie franchise that launched over 25 years ago went up for sale. The former owners of the property could no longer afford to hold on to it, and after a lot of Hollywood red tape and multiple lawyers, Termiantor hit the chopping block. And according to the Los Angeles Times, Lionsgate currently has the upper hand in the studio bidding war.

Lionsgate bid 15 million dollars, plus a percentage of future revenue to buy the rights to the troubled Terminator franchise. Currently, they’ve been named the highest bidder in the war for the machines that’s been raging since last fall when the Halcyon Group put the property on the market. More specifically Lionsgate will shell out the 15 million plus 5% of gross receipts from any future Terminator movies with their deal, which is a lot of dough considering the potential it has.

Now that Lionsgate has been named the “stalking horse,” any other bidder who wants a chance to take the title will have to up the ante by at least $750,000. The studio already has home video distribution rights to the original movie and its sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day. If they took over the franchise now, it would be a natural fit for the male targeted studio. These are the same people whose current bread and butter is the ongoing Saw franchise, which they need to move on from asap.

Whoever gains the rights to the property better be prepared to inherit a slew of angry fans who want more from John Connor. Not just a glossed over version of what they think we want, but a decent story and character arc worth our time.

Do you think anyone else could outbid Lionsgate for the Terminator’s rights?

Earlier this year everyone was up in arms over Terminator Salvation and how it didn’t fit in with James Cameron‘s vision. We all wanted to know what Cameron thought about the sequel but he kept pressing that he was too busy to see the movie. But now, with Avatar finished he had no more excuses and finally admitted to watching the movie. So the big question is, what did he think?

MTV recently caught up with Cameron while promoting Avatar and he revealed that he saw Terminator Salvation recently, but it was completely by accident.

“I have seen it, and unfortunately I saw it the wrong way, on cable at the hotel, while I was working, over three nights because I don’t have much time,” Cameron said. “It’s better than I thought it was going to be.”

It sounds like someone’s expectations were pretty low. Maybe the rest of the general population should have followed his lead? He did go on to give McG and company some praise for their efforts, so it wasn’t a complete backhanded compliment to their work. Especially since one of the main stars of TS is Sam Worthington, who’s also featured in Avatar.

“It’s actually quite reverential to the mythos of the ‘Terminator’ world,” he said. “I think McG and the writers tried hard to keep reacquainting you with some of those ideas in the story that they were weaving. So actually I thought it was pretty cool. I did feel that it sort of lacked Je ne sais quoi. Although I love Sam [Worthington] in it. “

In other words, it was OK, but could have been better. Cameron will be up for his own judgment day (pun intended) when Avatar hits theaters on December 18th. That’s when we’ll see if his movie lacks any Je ne sais quoi.

What do you think of Cameron’s response to seeing Terminator Salvation?

In February of 2010, the rights of the Terminator franchise will be up for grabs thanks to the legal problems of current owner Halcyon. Even with the drama over who will own what and when, Terminator Salvation director McG is confident that he’ll still be on board for not only a 5th but a 6th sequel.

If you were one of the lucky people to hear the live Blu-ray DVD commentary that McG gave for the release of Terminator Salvation, you got an earful of movie updates. The director stated that no matter who takes over ownership of the Terminator series he still plans on directing several future films. Here’s a transcript of the blow by blow taken by Jason Chen over at Gizmodo.

7:02: In answering a question about if Robert Patrick (T-1000) would be in a future movie. McG said that he might be, if there was a scientist that wanted to model a Terminator after himself. (Yes, he took that base idea from Terminator 3, in case you were wondering.)

7:13: He just announced that he’s making another Terminator movie. Seriously.

7:16: Oh and for those people who are punching themselves in the face that he’s making another one? He said he’s making one after that.

7:21: And now McG is being coy about making another one? I don’t get it.

7:24: And now he’s talking about a second or third movie again.

7:46: He says Sarah Connor is going to be in the next film, but he’s not sure how he’s going to pull that off.

Terminator Salvation wasn’t a horrible film, but it wasn’t great either. It was mediocre in every since of the word. It didn’t bomb at the box office but performed well below expectations, and now that the DVD has come into play, the studio may be able to recoup a decent amount of money to add to its worldwide gross of 371 million dollars.

It’s very easy to hate McG. He has an arrogance about him that makes you want to punch him the face. He’s not on Michael Bay‘s level of douche-baggery (yes I made that up), but he’s well on his way. To give credit where to where credit is due, the action sequences in TS were great and entertaining. It was the screenplay that was its downfall, as well as the miscasting of Christian Bale as John Connor. If McG is serious about this thing he has a lot of clean up work to do.

Do you think McG should return for another Terminator film, or walk away from the franchise?

There’s a reason why Joss Whedon has such as strong fan base. It’s because he’s talented, honest, and down right funny when he wants to be. Earlier this morning we brought you news that the Terminator franchise rights are being auctioned for sale this month, and several studios are interested in making the purchase. Well, the first official bid is coming from Whedon, who has sent out a letter listing his bid amount, as well as a few ideas he has in mind for the series.

Whedon’s letter is posted in its entirety on Nikki Finke, but here are some of the highlights. First off, check out the introduction, which is supposed to show that he “means business.”

Dear Sirs/Ma’ams,

I am Joss Whedon, the mastermind behind Titan A.E., Parenthood (not the movie) (or the new series) (or the one where ‘hood’ was capitalized ’cause it was a pun), and myriad other legendary tales. I have heard through the ‘grapevine’ that the Terminator franchise is for sale, and I am prepared to make a pre-emptive bid RIGHT NOW to wrap this dealio up. This is not a joke, this is not a scam, this is not available on TV. I will write a check TODAY for $10,000, and viola! Terminator off your hands.

Whedon then went on to what he thinks could help revive the Terminator franchise. He pointed out some of the obvious flaws that many fans have noted including the use of excessive time travel and Christian Bale’s Batman voice.

1) Terminator… of the Rings! Yeah, what if he time-travelled TOO far… back to when there was dragons and wizards? (I think it was the Dark Ages.) Hasta La Vista, Boramir! Cool, huh? “Now you gonna be Gandalf the Red!” RRRRIP! But then he totally helps, because he’s a cyborg and he doesn’t give a s#&% about the ring — it has no power over him! And he can carry it AND Frodo AND Sam AND f@%& up some orcs while he’s doing it. This stuff just comes to me. I mean it. (I will also offer $10,000 for the Lord of the Rings franchise).

2) More Glau. Hey. There’s a reason they’re called “Summer” movies.

3) Can you say… musical? Well don’t. Even I know that’s an awful idea.

4) Christian Bale’s John Connor will get a throat lozenge. This will also help his Batwork (ten grand for that franchise too, btw.)

5) More porn. John Connor never told Kyle Reese this, but his main objective in going to the past was to get some. What if there’s a lot of future-babies that have to be made? Cue wah-wah pedal guitar — and dollar signs!

6) The movies will stop getting less cool.

Out of these recommendations, number 2, 4, and 6 are valid points. Summer Glau is a kick-ass actress who can literally kick ass. She was great in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and in Whedon’s own Firefly. The overall comedic tone of this “serious” letter is right on the money. Terminator is something that has been unable to return to its former glory post T2: Judgment Day. Out of the four films produced, two of them worked, and two of them didn’t, is there anyone out there willing to roll the dice to see where a fifth movie would tip the scale?

What do you think of Joss Whedon’s open letter regarding Terminator?

It’s hard to believe that something as epic as the Terminator mythology could have a price tag, but it does. Over the past few months it’s been no secret that the producers who own the rights to Terminator have been involved in a heated legal battle over the property. According to the Financial Times, the franchise rights will officially be auctioned off this month, so how much is the series worth to Hollywood?

According to FT, many studios are interested in taking on the Terminator property because it’s one of the few film franchises that’s not owned by a major studio. Some of the names of possible buyers include Media Rights Capital, Sony, and those money grubbers over at Summit Entertainment. The rights will give the buyer the ability to make new Terminator films, TV programmes and other spin-offs that build on the popularity of the franchise.

Terminator is being auctioned off by Halcyon, the production company that brought us last summer’s modest hit, Terminator Salvation. Supposedly, the new deal doesn’t cover previous Terminator films, just future projects, therefore the new owners will have no stake in Terminator or T2: Terminator Judgment Day.

Whoever takes on the future of this series will have the opportunity to start anew. The approach McG tried to take with Salvation wasn’t as welcomed as many would have hoped. The new owners might invest in a reboot that sticks closer to the Terminator mythology, while still adding a fresh take on the story. Everyone is keeping pretty quiet on when the sale will specifically take place, but when it does the news will be everywhere. Here’s to hoping Summit doesn’t get it because if they do, the new Terminator may turn out to be a vampire!

What do you think of Terminator being up for sale? Who should take over the franchise?
