Michael Bay Forced To Defend ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Reboot Once Again

One week ago, we reported to you that Michael Bay will be producing a reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in which the half-shelled heroes are aliens instead of mutated turtles, and aren’t actually teenagers. Fan reaction to Twenty-Something Ninja Aliens (which doesn’t sound half bad, actually, especially compared to the bland real title, Ninja Turtles) exploded online, prompting Bay to respond with all the subtlety and aplomb that a man who directs films about walking trucks from space having fistfights can muster. And now, Bay has spoken out again.

In response to fan furor over the simplification of the franchise’s name to Ninja Turtles, Bay released another official statement, this time assuring fans that he and director Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) will handle the TMNT reboot with all the deftness, wit and dedication to the craft that they bestowed upon such films as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, The Island, Pearl Harbor, and Bad Boys II:

“Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple. The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers. Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE’S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.

MICHAEL”

So there you have it, Turtle fans. You have absolutely nothing to worry about (assuming you never saw Battle: Los Angeles or any of the Transformers films, that is), so you can now rest easy. Also, can someone help me secure the copyright to Twenty-Something Ninja Aliens? I smell a franchise.

Michael Bay Tells Angry Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fans To ‘Take A Breath And Chill’

On Monday, we reported on a story noting that Michael Bay and bottom of the barrel production company Platinum Dunes (behind such wonderful remakes as A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) were rebooting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise in 2013. We also noted that Bay announced the Turtles wouldn’t be Turtles as much as they’d be, well aliens. The internet freaked, fans balked, and so Michael Bay responded.

Following an almost immediate backlash against the news that “when you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable,” fans immediately took to the internet to express their revulsion at Bay’s rejiggering of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ origin. And Bay, with all of the subtlety, dignity, and aplomb that he lends his nuanced films, responded.

“Fans need to take a breath, and chill,” Bay wrote in a statement to fans. “They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world.”

And by richer world, he means a film about Teenage Mutant Ninja Aliens Who Strongly Resemble Turtles That Walk On Two Legs. And hey, it can’t be any dumber than a series of films about trucks from space that punch each other a lot, can it?

Michael Bay To Reboot The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, And Will Make Them Aliens

Platinum Dunes is a production company that has given us such lustrous movie reboots/remakes as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, The Hitcher, Friday the 13^th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, so you know that their Michael Bay-produced reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot is going to be just great. Especially because the titular Ninja Turtles are going to be—wait for it—aliens.

That’s right. Not content to drive the Transformers franchise into the ground (not that it really had far to go), Bay announced over the weekend at the Nickelodeon Upfront in New York that origin story for everyone’s favorite heroes in a half shell is going to be modified somewhat. And by “modified somewhat,” I mean changed entirely because it popped into Bay’s head one day and so why not? Trucks from space punching each other somehow made sense to film viewers, so why not turtles that know martial arts?

Bay stated that “when you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable.”

So there you go. Ninja Turtles, or How Michael Bay Destroyed Your Childhood Memories, is set for a Christmas 2013 release.

Jonathan Liebsman to Reboot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Again)

Jonathan Liebsman, hot off the upcoming Wrath of the Titans and last year’s Battle Los Angeles, has already lined up his next project. According to Variety, he’ll be bringing back the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the big screen, from a script by Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol‘s Andre Memec and Josh Applebaum. The project was set up by Michael Bay‘s company Platinum Dunes, so it’s hard not to speculate the reboot will be done in the style of The Dark Knight (aka gritty and hard edged).

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stared as a comic book, then became a animated kids show in 1987, and in 1990 became a highly successful live action movie, which spawned two theatrical sequels. The animated show ran until 1996, spawning a short-lived spinoff the next year, only to return to television in 2003 for another animated show that ran seven years. And then in 2007 there was a CG animated movie. In that sense the characters haven’t left us.

The silliness of the premise was always one of its great charms, so it will be interesting to see where they take it. Liebsman has yet to reveal much of a personality on screen, though he’s obviously ascended to the B-list, which as a working director isn’t a bad place to be. People still have an obvious affection for the characters, but it seems hard to make this into something that isn’t kid-friendly. We shall see.

Over the past few weeks, everyone have been following the promotional frenzy for Cartoon Network’s revamp of “ThunderCats“. We’ve all but forgotten that another eighties favorite is once again hitting the small screen, “The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles“! The Nickelodeon Network has gotten their claws into the property and are preparing to air a revised version of the characters we all know and love. One of the first pieces of artwork from the show has appeared on Flickr [via /Film] and you can check it out below.

The Wall Street Journal did a piece on the new “Turtles” series and got some choice words from executive producer Ciro Nieli. Back in the day, the one thing that separated each turtle from the other were their colored masks and their weapons. Nieli says this time around they’ll have “more individual attributes.” We’re not sure what that means but here they are…

The new character design is OK. We’ve seen worse. We wonder what the producer means by individual attributes? Is he speaking in terms of physicality or personality because we always thought they each had their own. Raphael was the hot head, Leonardo was the leader, Donatello was smart, and Michelangelo was the youngest and a free spirit. What’s so hard to differentiate?

The new series is slated to air in 2012.

Iron Man Scribes to Pen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Reboot

Michael Bay and Paramount Pictures are one step closer to bringing their live action reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the big screen. According to THR, they’ve hired Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who previously worked on the first Iron Man movie to pen the script. Since their installment in the Iron Man franchise was the better of the two, perhaps their addition to the Ninja Turtles series is a good sign.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been around for over 25 years and were at the height of their popularity in the early nineties (before Power Rangers came in and stole their thunder). They’ve already had three live action films, and a CGI animated feature that was released in 2007, now it’s time for a face-lift.

Bay and his production company Platinum Dunes are on board as producers, Marcum and Holloway are their writers, but they’ve yet to find a director. That job will be based on the strength or weakness of the script. Rebooting such a beloved series is going to be a daunting task and they need someone who’s willing to step out on a limb. Who should they get for the job?

Michael Bay Producing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Reboot

Nooooo!!! Michael Bay and his partners from his production company Platinum Dunes have been brought on board by Nickelodeon and Paramount to produce the live action reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Is nothing from our childhood sacred anymore?

The original film series launched 20 years ago in 1990 and spawned two more films including our personal favorite, The Secret of the Ooze. Bay along with Brad Fuller and Andrew Form will sink their teeth into this new venture that will expose the Turtles to an entirely new generation. Platinum Dunes has become known for rebooting old horror films (Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street) and now it looks like their moving into new territory.

The company already has a first look deal with Paramount for genre specific movies but they’re also looking to expand their horizons. Besides TMNT they’ll be working with Rob Cohen on the upcoming Fright Night remake starring Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell.

To be completely honest, we’re not sure if we want Bay near the Turtles. The first Transformers film was great but he got too cocky and defecated on the sequel, and who knows what the third will be like now that he’s replaced a bad actress (Megan Fox) with a non-actress (Rosie Huntington-Whitely). WTF?

Last year The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles turned 25 and in celebration of their monumental B-day it was announced that Legendary Pictures would be rebooting the live action film series. Let us preface this by saying the original Ninja Turtles movies were awesome (Part 3 was meh) and they spark up instant nostalgia for any kid born or raised during the eighties. With that being said the folks over at Latino Review may have found the first photo of the newly redesigned heroes. Love it or hate it, take a look and let us know what you think…

Be warned: for all we know this could be something that an aspiring makeup artist created but the site states that their source knows someone inside the TMNT fold who supplied them with the image so here we go! Are you ready to see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.0?

At first glance it’s scary. It looks nowhere near as welcoming as the Jim Henson versions we saw in the original trilogy. The nose/mouth combination is filled with hard lines and it makes you wonder how the actors will perform through it. CGI will more than likely be used for both the masks and suits not just for dialogue but also for the action sequences. They need to be able to do all those back flips and high kicks without any kind of restraint.

Ninja Turtles Movie Set for 2012

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans rejoice, there’s been some movement on the revival for the franchise. A while back we reported that a writer had been found to pen the screenplay for the new film, and a casting announcement was even sent out for members of the infamous Foot Clan. That was months ago, and since then we haven’t heard much, until now. According to Variety, Nickelodeon has acquired the global rights to the property for 60 million bucks.

The Ninja Turtles were originally owned by Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment, and has been a pop culture phenomenon since its comic debut back in 1984. With this new deal, Nickelodeon will start working on a TV series for the characters that will coincide with the release of the rebooted live action film. The show will be CG animated and is scheduled to air in 2012. As for the film, sister studio Paramount will produce the feature which will be released that same year.

I don’t know how I feel about a CG TV series, considering I have the original show on DVD. I prefer to see my turtle power in 2-D thank you very much. I will say that I did enjoy the 2006 TMNT film, even though it wasn’t in my traditional format. I couldn’t watch that type of animation everyday, once in a while is good enough.

Early-year comedies are out in full force this week as I Love You Man and 17 Again hit the shelves alongside a nominee for Best Foreign Language Film in The Class.

Plus, there’s some TV on DVD entries, a collection of every Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and the three worst DVD’s of the week. What more could we expect!?

I Love You Man

Starring: Jason Segel and Paul Rudd

It’s rare for this to happen in a film – but this one was too short. In fact, it was way too short.

Why? Because the characters were so pleasant, the movie so funny, and everything about the story simply so likable that when it came to an end it was a bit of a disappointment.

It was almost like a party that you didn’t want to end. It was just such a letdown, because you wanted to spend more time with these characters, and instantly began to count down the seconds until the fictive sequel I Still Love You Man.

It’s exactly that dismay that makes DVD’s such a wonderful thing. This DVD includes Extended Scenes, Deleted Scenes and other Extra Scenes. Now we can finally whet our full I Love You Man appetite.

17 Again

Starring: Zac Efron

How many different ways can this movie really be made? It seems like every four years either the mind of a 50-year-old is in a fifteen-year-old’s body or a teenager suddenly looks like an adult.

So what’s the next movie? Can we predict that already?

Is it time for a Haley Joel Osment comeback where he plays a Harvard professor who’s an expert on anthropological behavior in children who must become a child to complete his greatest work?

Or the girl from “Gary Unmarried” who’s fascinated by the world of high finance suddenly breaks up board meetings with her childish antics inside the body of Diane Lane?

Whatever it is, we all know it’s coming. For now, this DVD will have to tide us over until the next cross-generational body switch.

Of course, this means we’ll have to see more of this soon. The “Melrose Place” remake is already on the list for next season and soon we’ll probably see stuff like “Cheers” with a bunch of twenty-somethings and “The Fugitive” starring the guy from “Wings”. (Wait, that already happened?)

No matter what it is, it’s almost certain that one successful remake will bring about more. Especially when the evidence is neatly packaged on a 6-Disc DVD.

And we don’t just get the horrible third movie and an excuse to indulge in our secret Vanilla Ice fandom with this set. It also includes the new animated movie to make it the ultimate Turtle fan box set.

Included are a bevy of special features including things like collector’s cards and a comic. How can you go wrong with this four DVD set?

The Case to Vote for It: This is a sequel to the bomb Wesley Snipes film of about a decade ago. Actually it’s not. It’s a sequel to the sequel to that movie. A sequel that nobody knows even existed, yet here we are with another sequel. How does this happen?

I Do, I Did

The Case to Vote for It: Somehow in this movie a man is married to two women. But it isn’t a sort of polygamous relationship: The two women don’t know about each other, but he’s married to them both all the same. When they find out, a battle ensues to see which woman will hang on to her man. Raising the question – How sexist is this movie when they portray women who find out that there husband is married to somebody else yet still want to stay married to him? How low of an opinion of women does the writer of this movie possess?

Road Trip: Beer Pong

The Case to Vote for It: So it’s come to this. It wasn’t bad enough that American Pie became a franchise, now Tom Green’s breakout film is rolling out the unrated Straight-to-DVD releases. We start, of course, with the sport of Beer Pong, something played by lame-o frat boys and even lamer 28-year-olds who simply can’t let go. Sounds like a real winner.

Ninja Turtles Reboot Finds a Writer

Here’s a progress report for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. According to Variety, a writer has been hired to pen the screenplay. John Fusco has been brought on to guide Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, and Master Splinter into the 21st century. Fusco was hired by Mirage Studio producers, Scott Mednick and Galen Walker. The writer is no stranger to martial arts or martial arts centered films.

John Fusco has been studying Shaolin kung fu since he was 12 years old. His real life connection to martial arts may have been the catalyst that helped him pen such films as The Forbidden Kingdom and the remake of Seven Samurai for the Weinstein Company. He’s also had a hand in the screenplay’s for Hidalgo and Young Guns. Fusco recently opened up about his new gig within the Ninja Turtle universe and stated, “It is always exciting when you can come aboard a project that bridges the worlds of what you do with what you love.”

A director has not been found to helm the film as of yet, but they’ve still got time. Moves have been made in the right direction to bring the Ninja Turtles back to the big screen. They have a writer, they’ve begun a search for martial artists to star as members of The Foot Clan, and they’re holding a panel at this year’s San Dan Diego Comic-Con. Their panel will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ninja Turtles which will include a screening of the original film, and discussions with it’s creators and producers.

The Foot Clan Will Return for Ninja Turtles Reboot!

I loved the Foot! When I was a kid watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, and later on the live action films, I thought they were so amazing. I’m excited to announce that Mirage Studio’s developing TMNT remake will include the infamous ninja clan. As we’ve previously reported the new film will focus on the origin of the four main characters. That means the original villain Master Shredder and his Foot crew won’t be far behind. According to /Film, an open casting call has gone out for professional martial artists to audition to be a member of underground organization for the upcoming film.

If you want to be a part of the Foot Clan in the new live action Ninja Turtles movie, you’re going to have to strut your stuff in front of some martial arts icons. The audition judges will include Ernie Reyes, Jr., who actually starred in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, Jason Morgan from the American Taekwondo Association, and 2011 TMNT movie producers Scott Mednick and Galen Walker. Here is a description of what they’re looking for as well as the audition location.

If you’ve got some hidden ninja skills this might be a great opportunity for you to show your stuff. If I was any good at martial arts I’d go. I love Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael but who wouldn’t want to be a member of the Foot for one day? I would love the opportunity to say the words “ninja vanish” and disappear without a trace. Wouldn’t you?
