Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are movie stars in a world that no longer respects stardom. Studios are more interested these days in titles that have name brand recognition (it requires less work) and so the two appearing together in a film in 2011 means that it’s met with a curious indifference. Shouldn’t Larry Crowne be a bigger deal? Well, like the film itself, the appeal is mellow and surprisingly unassuming, and it’s pleasures are more in what it’s not (loud and dumb) than what it is (a formulaic romantic comedy). Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson has landed a new gig and it has her making history. She’ll play the first woman to coach a Division One men’s team in the NCAA. Doesn’t that sound interesting? The groundbreaking role is for a film called From the Rough and her character will be inspired by Dr. Catana Starks, the woman who really did break a gender barrier in coaching.

Tyler Perry‘s latest moral fest I Can Do Bad All by Myself hits theaters next weekend, and for some odd reason I think may go see it. The film stars Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson as the lead, with Perry in a supporting role as resident grandmother from hell, Madea. Based off the 1999 play written by Perry, the film adaptation of the story adds an interesting twist, not found in the stage production.
Get a peek at Henson and all of her self destruction in the trailer below…

Some people believe that films doomed by a bad script or concept can be saved by a stellar actor. In this case I’m referring to the remake/reimagining of the 1984 classic, The Karate Kid. Will Smith will be producing the flick, which will feature his son Jaden in the lead as a troubled youth named Dre. He encounters severe bullying when he is forced to move overseas to China due to his mother’s job. According to /Film, Oscar nominated actress Taraji P. Henson has just been cast in the maternal role of Sherry.
