Liam Neeson‘s back at it in Taken 2, which follows his character from Taken,who now must defend his family from an organization wanting revenge for the hyperviolent stuff that happened in the first film. Tower Heist is no longer going to have a limited release VOD launch three weeks after release. Universal first floated the idea, as we reported, and then Cinemark and many independent exhibitors balked at the idea, and told Universal that they would refuse to show the movie. But if the studios want to go in this direction, it’s possible they will work out some title to try this with in the near future. When Taken came out in January of 2009, it was not expected to be a runaway success. In fact, it was an action movie going up against the Super Bowl. But the film became an honest-to-goodness word-of-mouth hit. Liam Neeson was reborn as an action star – leading to The A-Team and Unknown – and the film made $145 Million at the box office. A sequel was assured and spoken of repeatedly. Earlier today Deadline Hollywood wanted to throw some cold water on that fire, reporting that either the film would go forward without Neeson, or shoot in another year. Now it appears that those contract disputes have been resolved, and shooting is to begin either at the end of the year or the start of 2012
Liam Neeson has been all about action films ever since Taken debuted in theaters early last year. It was a sleeper hit, and became somewhat of a cult phenomenon. He followed that performance with Zeus from Clash of the Titans and Hannibal in The A-Team, now he’s returning to his vengeful roots in the sequel Taken 2. Yes, it is happening.
