Wading through the deluge of movie reviews, Twitter-hypes, and blog denunciations can always be an eye-reddening slog, so allow us to break down the best of SXSW for you thus far:

Top Flicks:

Leading off the SXSW buzz is the Edgar Wright-produced, Joe Cornish-directed Attack of the Block. A wild-eyed mishmash of elements from The Warriors, Gremlins, Critters, and Predator (yeah, you read that right), the film lays out an alien invasion of London. Or, as Ain’t It Cool News puts it:

“When Cornish took the stage to introduce the film he described it as Super 8 Mile and shockingly that’s a very apt description. It’s about pissed off aliens that land in gang-ridden South London and the teen thugs that stand up to them… While that dynamic is running, we also have a fun kids-defending-their-home action-horror flick. Thanks to the great guys at Spectral Motion and Cornish’s obvious nostalgia for movie monsters of my heyday the threat is very real.”

The Hollywood Reporter documented the madness of the Kill List screening at the Alamo Drafthouse, where, “amid plentiful trash-talking and audience jeering, a beer-slamming no-breaks relay race ensued that devolved into quite a spitting mess. Eventually, the movie itself played, which one attendee, who related this story to me, described as ‘fucking warped but amazing.’” The film documents the decline into paranoia and madness of an ex-soldier turned contract killer. Subtlety ahoy!

Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop is (in addition to being a very apt title) a “thoroughly entertaining doc about the ‘Legally Prohibited’ tour” that “shows O’Brien funnier than ever, even when wounded,” that should, according to The Hollywood Reporter, assuage some of Coco’s lingering regrets about his Tonight Show debacle with “the thought that Jay Leno will never earn as much laughter in half an hour as he and his crew does in the first third of Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop.”

Cinematical tapped Girl Walks Into a Bar as “half an anthology piece, of sorts, and half an “all in one night” neo-noir dark comedy, ‘Girl Walks Into a Bar’ is about as “experimental” a flick you’ll find outside the festival circuit — it actually debuted on YouTube following its SXSW world premiere — but it’s also unexpectedly breezy, quick-witted, and rather fun.”

Finally, Ain’t It Cool News pegs Ti West’s The Innkeepers as “low budget, it’s a slow burn, but to me this film succeeds in all the ways Insidious failed… The Innkeepers takes place in an old hotel that is notoriously haunted, but not in a hidden Stephen King kinda way, but in the way that most medium-sized towns have that old hotel with a history.”

SXSW FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2011 CONFERENCE LINEUP
TODD PHILLIPS & PAUL REUBENS AMONG KEY PANELISTS

Schedule of Screening and Panel Dates & Times Now Live

Austin, Texas – February 15, 2011 – The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival is thrilled to announce over 100 Film Conference sessions for the 2011 event, which will take place Friday, March 11 – Saturday, March 19, 2011 in Austin, Texas. These panels, largely selected from proposals submitted via the SXSW PanelPicker™ interface, offer fresh perspectives on the topics facing today’s filmmakers and industry. The schedule, complete with both screening and panel dates and times, is now available at http://www.sxsw.com/film. Visit often for more information and updates.

The SXSW Film Conference starts on Friday, March 11 and runs through Tuesday, March 15, 2011. Major panelists added include Todd Phillips (filmmaker, The Hangover, Old School), Paul Reubens (filmmaker, The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway), Duncan Jones (filmmaker, Source Code, Moon), Jake Gyllenhaal (actor, Source Code, Love & Other Drugs), James Gunn (filmmaker, Super, Slither), Ellen Page (actor, Super, Inception) and Rainn Wilson (actor, Super, The Office), among others. Other upgrades to the 2011 Conference include more workshop sessions, more mentor sessions, and over 20 Crossover Panels (open to both Film and Interactive registrants).

The SXSW PanelPicker™ is an innovative online tool that allows the SXSW community to have a significant voice in programming Music, Film, and Interactive conference activities (panels, presentations, discussions, etc.) through an open proposal and voting process. SXSW Film accepted proposals from June 14 – July 11, 2010, and the community was invited to browse and vote on the ideas from August 9 – August 29, 2010. Votes from the community, along with feedback from SXSW Advisory Boards and the SXSW staff, helped determine Conference programming for the 2011 event. For more information on the SXSW PanelPicker™, visit http://panelpicker.sxsw.com.

“Many of my favorite moments at SXSW have included those great connections made in the halls of the Film Conference, where film professionals of every stripe gather to teach, learn, and compare notes,” says Film Conference and Producer Janet Pierson. “Through Conversations, panels, workshops and one-on-one mentor sessions, tremendous access and information are available to our registrants. Not to mention a taste of all that SXSW Interactive has to offer via the Crossover panels, and the SXSW Trade Show – this year featuring original content and entertainment via the Next Stage.”

The SXSW Film Festival will open on Friday, March 11, 2011 with Duncan Jones’ Source Code. In addition to five days of panels and workshops in the Film Conference, SXSW Film Festival offers nine full days of screenings featuring nearly 300 films.
* A Conversation with Todd Phillips

Director Todd Phillips has forever left his mark on comedy entertainment with his own brand of films exploring, in often-outrageous ways, the nature of male relationships. With films like Old School, Starsky & Hutch, School For Scoundrels, Due Date and The Hangover, the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time, he has worked with some of today’s most innovative and acclaimed comic actors. He is currently in post-production on The Hangover Part II, which moves the action to Thailand. Phillips began his career as a documentary filmmaker, inspired by humor taken from everyday reality and the belief that the truth is often stranger than fiction. Join what promises to be a fascinating discussion with Phillips as he discusses his work, his career and what makes life so funny, with Elvis Mitchell.

* A Conversation with Paul Reubens

Paul Reubens is best known for his character, Pee-wee Herman, which he created while a member of the famed Los Angeles improv group, The Groundlings. From its premiere in 1981, the stage production of The Pee-wee Herman Show quickly gained a national audience when it was broadcast by HBO. In 1985, Reubens co-wrote the hit film, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. He went on to create, co-write and co-direct Pee-wee’s Playhouse on CBS. The series earned 22 Emmy Awards over its five seasons. Recently, The Pee-wee Herman Show completed an acclaimed run on Broadway and was filmed, once again, for HBO. Join us as Paul discusses his remarkable body of work and the upcoming HBO special “The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway.” We can’t wait, and hope you can’t either!

* Straight From the Source (Code)

Join visionary director Duncan Jones and the cast of the SXSW opening night film as they navigate parallel universes, alternate realities and mind-bending explosions. Jones will be joined by cast members Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan as they answer all of your questions about the making of Source Code, his highly anticipated follow up to Moon.

* SUPER-Talented: A Conversation with James Gunn, Ellen Page and Rainn Wilson

SUPER-size the U.S. premiere of this highly-anticipated new film with an explosive conversation featuring director James Gunn (Slither), Rainn Wilson (The Office) and Ellen Page (Inception). Learn about how a short-order cook can take justice into his own hands with little more than a wrench and a sign from above. Don’t steal, don’t deal drugs, and don’t miss your chance to hear all the inside stories of how this singular dark-comedy made it to the big screen.

If you follow the festival or convention circuit, here’s some news you might enjoy. The South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival has announced its opening feature and it’s none other than Source Code. The sophomore film from director Duncan Jones will headline this year’s event and debut during its opening night.

Jones is a SXSW alum so it’s pretty sweet that he has the opportunity to premiere his film there.

“We are delighted to welcome Duncan Jones back to SXSW. His debut ‘Moon’ showed an intelligence, skill, and exceptional use of limited resources that’s exactly the kind of filmmaking we love to support,” said Film Conference and Festival Producer Janet Pierson

Source Code centers on a decorated soldier Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. In an assignment unlike any he’s ever known, he learns he’s part of a government experiment called the “Source Code,” a program that enables him to cross over into another man’s identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. With a second, much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.

The film also stars Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright, and Michelle Monaghan. It will open in theaters on April 1, 2011.

An official teaser poster has been released for the Nimrod Antal reboot, Predators. The film is produced by Robert Rodriguez and has a cast led by Academy Award winner, Adrien Brody. While at SXSW, an exclusive 2 minute preview debuted of the film, and I have to admit, this movie looks a lot better than I thought it would. Check it out…

The plot of Predators centers on a reluctant mercenary named Royce, who leads a group of elite warriors who have been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators. Doesn’t that sound awful?

The video preview is introduced by Rodriguez who explains that his vision is for Predators to be a stand alone entity. He doesn’t want it to feel like the fifth or sixth installment of a well established franchise. The creatures featured in the actual video look a lot more intimating than the one highlighted in the teaser poster. The only reason I’m not giving it too much flack is because it’s not the official theatrical version.

Here’s the poster and the video…

It’s here. The 2010 SXSW Film Festival has finally begun and it’s opened with a bang. Last night marked the world premiere of Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, the R-rated comic book movie that went from being the little engine that could to the talk of the town. The film centers on a group of unlikely heroes led by an awkward teenager who dresses up, fights crime, and takes down the bad guys. They can’t fly, they can’t see through walls, and they’re not invisible, but one thing is for sure…they can kick your ass.

Check out some early reactions to the very first screening of the film…

The Premise:

The premise of this movie, and comic on which it’s based, is a frighteningly simple one: what if someone really tried to be a superhero? What would the consequences be? The answer, over a frenetic running time of approximately two hours, is that it’s a horribly dangerous path that will probably get you killed in relatively short order. If that seems a somewhat thin platform, then let me assure you Kick-Ass takes that and every other comic book convention and plants them firmly wrong-side up. And I don’t mean in a moronic Meet The Spartans type way. The referential humor and genre twisting in this are clever and mature, and, for the most part, not remotely infantile. [Den of Geek]

The Performances:

Johnson, true to his character, lets himself be upstaged by his costars — especially Moretz, who with Kick-Ass has gone from voicing Winnie the Pooh cartoons to slicing up drug dealers with a samurai bloodlust Quentin Tarantino would appreciate. Though the movie initially wants to stay rooted in the real world, it stops trying when her “Hit Girl” is onscreen — the tween character is straight out of The Matrix, and it’s only Moretz’s likeably ludicrous tough-girl act that holds things together. (As her dad, Nic Cage bolsters his portfolio of quirky performances and might make viewers wish he had been allowed to play Superman for Tim Burton way back when.) [THR]

Also surprisingly good in Kick-Ass is Mark Strong. I say surprisingly because although I know he has his fans I have yet to see him anything where he has impressed me; I was particularly underwhelmed by his performance in Sherlock Holmes. In Kick-Ass Strong plays Chris’ father and crime boss Frank and he is pretty funny in the role and plays the exaggerated cartoon crime boss bad guy with great panache.[Hey U Guys]

The Action:

The action sequences are brutal yet balletic, and wonderfully underpinned with the oddest assortment of soundtrack choices I’ve ever heard. I can only salute a man who’s prepared to put wholesale slaughter to the theme from The Banana Splits. Vaughn is up for that, and also adds in many other wonderful signature moments. [Den of Geek]

The Direction:

Matthew Vaughn is an assured director; takes his time, gets things right. Despite the OTT brawling, he disciplines himself in terms of dialogue, shots, sound and production design in a way that guvnor Quentin Tarantino, for all his filmmaking genius, simply does not. Kick-Ass is loud and ludicrous, but not in your face. [Clothes on Film]

Overall:

Even having seen only the Comic-Con footage from last summer and largely skipped the interstitial clips and promotional materials, I hoped I hadn’t seen everything it had to offer, but was disappointed to discover there was little more to explore in the finished film. Once the novelty wears off of watching a 12-year-old girl impale adversaries while calling them “*ssholes” or worse, there’s nothing deeper or more meaningful within Vaughn’s vision to sustain subsequent viewings. The closest analogy I can think of with Kick-Ass is that it’s a visceral (as opposed to logical) companion piece to a film like Memento or The Usual Suspects, where the style and energy is spectacular and striking the first go ’round, but it’s not only the concept, the “hook,” but the execution, and finally, the cumulative effect that prompts you to return to the material again and mine what deeper intricacies may exist. [Cinematical]

Kick-Ass is going to put a giant boot in the face of that mentality. It is a pitch-perfect send-up of everything that is characteristic of superhero films. It is versed enough to cite convention, but clever enough to find the humor in the genre’s absurdity. And the biggest advantage Kick-Ass has in the parody department is that it is unrelentingly entertaining. It seems that in the last few years, terrible parodies have made undeserved fortunes at the box office while better-crafted entries have gone largely unseen. Kick-Ass, on the other hand, has all the necessary components to clean up at the box office and be well deserving of its success. [Hollywood.com]

Check out The “Socalled” Movie where a real artist who follows his dream is able to take the internet and YouTube and become a massive success (apparently that really does work! Keep trying all your indie film-makers with crappy cameras and good ideas!). Thanks to the National Film Board of Canada and YouTube the feature-length documentary film titled The “Socalled” Movie will be premiered at the SXSW Film Festival on March 16.

The film is about Canadian musician, Socalled, whose debut music video garnered over 2M views on YouTube, is the subjects of the film and will also be performing at the festival on the 16th.

Official Synopsis:

Meet Socalled. He’s unstoppable. A pianist, singer, arranger, rapper, producer and composer (and also a magician, filmmaker, and visual artist), he’s blasting through the boundaries that separate music from different cultures, eras, and generations.

Socalled is a musical alchemist, always looking for the next old thing to make new again. The “socalled” Movie shows him introducing funk trombone legend Fred Wesley (of James Brown fame) to klezmer music, while wowing Wesley with his knowledge of funk. When Dolgin comes across LP’s from the 1950′s by lounge pianist Irving Fields, he looks up 94-year-old Fields and inspires him to pen a new hit song.

Shot in Socalled’s Montreal neighbourhood where Hasidic Jews and hipsters crowd the sidewalks, and in New York, France and the Ukraine, The “Socalled” Movie is a cinematic multi-faceted depiction of inspiration, collaboration and transformation.

Socalled defies category and refuses limitations. The “Socalled” Movie examines his energy from all angles and transmits the urgent creative spark to everyone watching: now’s your chance – go out there and make something!

The SXSW Festival is almost here and the final preparations are being made for one of its biggest debuts, Kick-Ass. The Matthew Vaughn feature will premiere on opening day and over at MTV, they’ve unveiled a new promotional poster for the movie and announced the latest actors who’ll be attending the film’s panel.

According to the site, Kick-Ass stars Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse along with comic creators Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. will be in attendance at SXSW to accompany the film’s premiere. Not only that, but MTV has debuted one of three new limited edition posters that will only be available during signings at the show. The first one is of the title character and it states, “I want you to Kick Ass. Become a Superhero Today.” It’s very old school, in an Uncle Sam kind of way.

Kick-Ass is based on the edgy comic that begs the question, what would happen if superheroes really did exist? The film centers on a group of crime fighting vigilantes who don’t have any super powers, but overcompensate with weapons and attitude. It’s a prime example of fantasy meeting reality, with a bit of comedy thrown in.

Check out the first limited edition poster…

The Argentinian Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla is hitting the town of Austin this spring to lead a conversation with SXSW goers. SXSW is a huge event that combines film and music, so bringing Santaolalla in for a chat seems like a treat to anyone who plans to be there from March 12 through the 21st.

Santaolalla first came into the music industry in the 70s with his Latino folk/rock band Arco Iris. Then he went solo; and in 2000 he did what any talented musician should do at some time in their life — he scored a film. So at this event, Santaolalla will focus on his career as a film composer and record producer. Anyone looking to do this in the future should definitely attend.

The event is hosted by BMI, which will also be hosting another panel discussion with a various amount of artists who have one foot in film and another in music. “Sound Decisions: A reality Check on Using Music in Film” will bring together the likes of rock singer Michael Des Barres, Runaway‘s producer Kim Fowley, and Kick Ass’ composer Ilan Eshkeri. These experts will discuss the tactics of “finding a film’s sound” and other similar subjects.

Consider this your musical education for two days. “Sound Decisions” will take place on Sunday, March 14 at 11 a.m. and “Conversations with Gustavo Santaolalla” on Tuesday, March 16 at 2 p.m. Both will take place in the Austin Convention Center, so be there or be square.

Do you plan to go? Let us know!
