Hello ScreenCrave readers! We are back with more cheap movies for your purchasing pleasure. This week we have a few older movies, a popular TV show, and a few newer movies to choose from. For those of you who need to catch up on Lost before the new season begins, you can buy Season 5 for a bargain price of only $35 dollars. Bruce Willis‘ recent movie, Surrogates, and the classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, are both on sale. It seems like an obvious pick for me, one is definitely more of a classic than the other, but I’ll leave the choice up to you! Finally, the breakout hit of last year, Paranormal Activity, is available on Blu-Ray and it is on sale! Apparently this film is cheap to make and cheap to buy!

Ready for some fun sci-fi action with a good ol’ fashioned moral at the end? Check out Bruce Willis‘ new action-thriller by Jonathan Mostow, Surrogates. You’ve seen the sexy/creepy posters of the perfect beings taking off their clothing to reveal their inner robots, now it’s time to see what’s behind all the mystery.

The Players:

Director: Jonathan Mostow
Screenplay: Michael Ferris and John D. Brancato
Graphic Novel: Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele
Cast: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Boris Kodjoe, Ving Rhames

The Plot:

Set in present day, people have found a new way to live their lives to the fullest — with surrogate robots. The robots are a sexy, physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. Basically you’re you, only hotter and better at everything that you do. With everyone safe in their homes, free of pain, fear and consequences, the world is a utopia, that is until the first murder occurs and FBI agent Greer (Willis) will have to leave his surrogate behind and risk his life to unravel the mystery.

The Good:

The Idea Behind the Action: If people really had surrogates it would change the world as we know it, and the movie did attempt to take that all on board in an interesting way. Violence would change, health would change (although I only saw it going the one way- more on this later), war, infidelity (it wasn’t ME!) and more. For an action film, they took a number of these ideas to heart and did a decent job at presenting them in a fun way.
Old Fashioned Effects: A number of extras doing one thing in unison is more effective than someone flying through thin air. In a world where everything is CGI it’s nice to see a couple simple shots that still blow your hair back. Although there are a few scenes which were definitely shot on a green screen and a tennis ball, they used them spraingly and had enough story to keep you entertained and interested between action sequences.

The Bad:

The Sub-Plot: Without spoiling anything, Bruce Willis’ character is given a “dramatic sub-plot” which is completely unnecessary to the story and far to heavy handed to be enjoyed or believed. Which is made worse by…
The Score: Talk about trying to ham up the little stuff. Every time there’s an emotional plot point that they’re trying to hit you over the head with you’re bombarded with violins and over the top sympathetic music. A good score should but heard but not noticed, this was not that.
Their Health: Back to what I was saying before… Yes, by having a surrogate you would be less likely to catch a cold from someone sitting next to you, STDs wouldn’t be a problem, and day to day injuries would drop, but if all you did all day long was sit in a chair, your body would atrophy, depression would run rampant, and I’m sure our life lines would go down. Going to the gym, hiking, swimming is not just about being sexy, it’s also about well being and piece of mind. Pharmaceutical companies would have a field day if this were to ever happen and I would have loved to have seen them touch on that.
Wealth: How can everyone afford amazing apartments with nice cars and a surrogate system that I imagine is extremely expensive? Just because you have a pretty person running around as you doesn’t mean you have more money. Where was the wealth coming from?
The Surrogates Movement: They can fly through the air, jump from bus to bus, and crush you if necessary, but for some reason they don’t know how to dance. Well at least not all of them. Is the message supposed to be that dancing can only be done by a real human? If so, that’s fine, but I needed a line and someone to tell all the extras in the shot what the deal was, because half of them were dancing like robots and the other half like people.

Overall:

Although this is an action film, it does have a bit more to it. Is it a great film? No. Is it great for what it is? Yes. It’s got a touch of a cool idea mixed in with a bunch of pretty people running around while getting blown up. In fact, I think they could have dropped the whole sub-plot and just dealt a little bit more with the main plot, which was quite rich. And to wrap it all up, it does have a important albeit sappy moral at the end to boot.

New Surrogates Theatrical Trailer

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming sci-fi thriller Surrogates. The film is directed by Jonathan Mostow and stars Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell. In comparison to the previous trailer this one definitely kicks it up a notch. There’s a different intro and a lot more action paired with a suspenseful build up. You learn how Willis is connected to certain characters, human or otherwise, and it ends on what I call an old school Yippee Ki-yay moment.

When I first heard about this film I wasn’t particularly interested, but this trailer has changed my mind. It reminds me of vintage Bruce Willis circa the late eighties and early nineties. In one of the clips from the video, it shows him shooting his gun through the roof of his car. If that doesn’t scream Die Hard, I don’t know what does.

Surrogates hits theaters this fall on September 25th.

New Surrogates Photos and Video

The live action adaptation of the graphic novel Surrogates won’t hit theaters until September 25th, but a few new photos have been released. The latest music video from recording artists Breaking Benjamin features new footage from the film, that include stars Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell. The song is entitled “I Will Not Bow,” and due to the subject matter, expect to see plenty of lifeless bodies and questionable faces. View the photos and the video below.

I love the fact that Bruce Willis wears various toupee’s in his films with no shame. He and Samuel L. Jackson are my hair idols. The story focuses on a man as he investigates several mysterious deaths that he believes are connected to a government program, which is extremely high tech and allows people to buy flawless robot versions of themselves. What will people do with that type of power?

Surrogates Behind the Scenes Featurette

The upcoming live action adaptation of Surrogates won’t hit theaters until next month, but before then you can get a good look at some behind the scenes footage. A video has been released that features interviews with stars Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamond Pike, and more. It focuses on the origin of the story and how the concept of a surrogate body can have deadly consequences. You can view the video below.

The story focuses on a man as he investigates several mysterious deaths that he believes are connected to a government program, which is extremely high tech and allows people to buy flawless surrogate (robot) versions of themselves. They vicariously live through them and have the ability to live out any and all their outlandish fantasies. This all sounds like a great idea until someone ends up dead, and you can’t tell who’s who when trying to catch the culprit!

As you can also see, this will be another feature where we get to see Bruce Willis’ amazing hair artist at work. This will give him an excuse to wear an array of wigs, while playing the various versions of himself. I swear, him and Samuel L. Jackson can get away with anything on their scalp!

Several new posters have been released for the promotion of the upcoming sci-fi flick, Surrogates. The film stars Bruce Willis and centers on a man as he investigates several mysterious deaths that he believes are connected to a government program. It is extremely high tech and allows people to buy perfect robot versions of themselves. They vicariously live through them and have the ability to live out any and all their wildest fantasies. In my opinion the posters look exactly like the ones from the now defunct Fox series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but you be the judge.

Creepy concept, but not as creepy as Ving Rhames and Bruce Willis’ wigs. Those things were very distracting. The film kind of reminds me of a sleeker Total Recall mixed with Demolition Man. The idea of having another version of yourself and living in a controlled, futuristic environment without crime. Surrogates will hit theaters this fall on September 25.

McG gave fan’s hope at his panel when he vaguely insinuated that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 may be making an appearance in Terminator: Salvation after all. The director stated, “The T-800s as we know them look like Arnold. The T-800 plays a big role in this movie. I can’t quite tell you how we express that. Let me just hint at this: I don’t want today’s Arnold Schwarzenegger.” [First Showing]

Disney previewed the Bruce Willis graphic novel adaptation, Surrogates. This was the first trailer promoting the film, whose tag line is “see what they see, feel what they feel and become anyone you want to.” [Superherohype]
Check out a reaction to the upcoming Nicolas Cage disaster flick, Knowing. “The movie is directed by Alex Proyas, probably most known for doing I, Robot and Dark City, and Knowing looks to be just as dark as those two films.” [CinemaBlend]

Over at ComingSoon.net, they’ve released the first photo from the upcoming Bruce Willis film Surrogates. The film is based off of the graphic novel of the same name, and co-stars Radha Mitchell and Ving Rhames.

In the film, FBI agents (Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell) investigate the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves—fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles—enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes. The murder spawns a quest for answers: in a world of masks, who’s real and who can you trust?
