With The Adventures of Tintin, Steven Spielberg has finally decided to play with some of the newest toys of cinema, and in his first motion capture film, he revolutionizes the format. Moreso than Avatar, here Spielberg is let loose to play with the camera as he sees fit, and you can see an invigorated director who’s able to stage sequences in ways that would be unimaginable in live action. And that’s enough to make it a must-see.

The Players:

Director: Steven Spielberg

Writers: Steven Moffatt, Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish

Cast: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost

Music: John Williams

The Plot:

After purchasing a antique minature ship, Tintin (Bell) is targeted by Ivanovich Sakharine (Craig) and his minions. The ship holds a secret and Tintin uncovers it with just enough time to be kidnapped and put to sea. There he meets Captain Haddock (Serkis) a drunk with a connection to that mystery. It seems if three pieces of a puzzle are put together, a treasure will be revealed. And it turns out that Ivanovich and Haddock’s family have a long standing grudge.

The Good:

Spielberg’s Camera: Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest working directors, and the man has always been one of the most technically proficient filmmakers in the history of cinema. Here, unmoored from having a practical camera, he’s able to do things that just aren’t humanly possible in live action. From a spectacular one-shot action sequence, to how he moves a camera on a boat, it’s like watching a maestro given everything he’s ever wanted. But even the introduction of Tintin via his famous hair is a delight. The man is just that good.

Andy Serkis: Though Jamie Bell’s Tintin is more avatar than action star, Serkis’s Captain Haddock is a delightful character who goes from fall down drunk to avenger of a family legacy. It’s a fun role, and he makes the best impression of the cast, though Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are charming as the bumbling Thompson twins (yes, the band was named after them).

That One Shot: Seriously, there is no better action sequence this or any other year than the one shot of Tintin and Haddock trying to get a scrap of paper as a broken dam sends water flooding down on them, and bad guys are chasing them. Spielberg’s sense of action in films like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom has never left the master, and it’s one of those shots that left me cackling in delight.

Sense of Adventure: It’s easy to say that this is better than the last Indiana Jones film. But it’s also fair to say that it’s better than the last two Indiana Jones films.

The Bad:

Tintin, Kinda Boring: If there’s a problem with the film it’s that as an adult this doesn’t have the sort of lead that’s exceptional. Tintin is a young reporter who’s not a total blank, but is meant to be an audience surrogate for the children in the audience. The script does what they can with the character, and it’s a fun movie and story regardless, but if the film has one drawback, it’s that the main character is a bit of a blank.

Sequels: The film treats a follow-up like a an afterthought, and though the film works on its own merits, it’s still the shortest theatrical film Spielberg has ever made. It’s nice that the film’s reasonably tight, but the ending undercuts some goodwill by insisting there will be more.

Overall:

Robert Zemeckis blanched at the idea that Motion-Capture movies are animated films, but if they are, then Tintin is easily the best animated film of the year. It’s a ridiculously entertaining film that never outstays its welcome.

Rating: 8.8/10

The Adventures of Tintin hits theaters December 21.

Curious as to what, exactly, Daniel Day Lewis will look like as our nation’s 16th president in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Abraham Lincoln biopic (the cleverly-titled Lincoln)? The first picture from the set has been released and, well, perhaps unsurprisingly, the famously method actor looks a lot like Lincoln.

There is currently no set release date for Lincoln, but we do know that it is set for a “late 2012” release, which will place it squarely in solid Oscar-bait season. And while the film will certainly revolve around Daniel Day Lewis’ performance, Spielberg has assembled quite a cast of luminaries for the flick (via /Film): Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, John Hawkes, Hal Holbrook, James Spader, Tim Blake Nelson, Bruce McGill, Joseph Cross, David Strathairn, Walton Goggins, Lee Pace, Jackie Earle Haley and David Oyelowo.

One can only hope that Lewis isn’t being so method that he’s demanding that he be addressed as “Abe Lincoln” backstage, which would be a little weird, but probably not nearly as weird as constantly demanding that people open fire at him inside of Spielberg’s theater where they watch the daily footage. That’s just inappropriate.

What do you think of Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln?

Just a week ago, we told you that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were once again collaborating to defile our collective childhood dreams by making yet another Indiana Jones film, after already seriously tarnishing the franchise with Indiana Jones and This One Ridiculous Crystal Skull and Some Aliens. We reported that Spielberg is just waiting for Lucas to come up with a plot to fit around their agreed upon MacGuffin (the item that drives the plot, like the Ark of the Covenent or the Holy Grail in previous films). Well, according to Lucas, Spielberg was wrong and had the news backwards.

According to Lucas, the story has been worked out, and now just needs a MacGuffin to be inserted. “I told him about the story, but I really haven’t found the MacGuffin yet,” Lucas said, as he thoughtfully mused about what other franchises he could destroy. “I mean, I know what it’s about, but I just have to find a MacGuffin that fits into the arena we’re working in.”

So there you have it: George Lucas and The Search For the MacGuffin in the Unnecessary Sequel. Sounds like a hell of a film. Spielberg can play the wise-cracking sidekick.

What do you think of the Indy 5 news?

Seeing as how Steven Spielberg and George Lucas simply did not learn their lessons with Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull-Thing That Tarnished a Beloved Franchise, Indiana Jones 5 is definitely happening, because they haven’t quite finished ruining the beloved collective dreams of our childhoods.

The first sliver of detail about the upcoming sequel slipped out when Spielberg, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, noted that the film is “up to George. We have already agreed on the genre of the fifth movie, we already have a concept in mind. I don’t know where George is with the story. There is no Indy 5 until George says there is.”

This comment created a flurry of fanboy friction on the internet, as the phrase, “agreed on the genre” seemed to imply that Indy would be entering a new genre. Did this mean that Indy 5 would be a romantic comedy? Pure sci-fi? Erotic thriller? Slasher film? Transformers tie-in?

Turns out, none of the above. Sensing that the heads of nerds worldwide were exploding with the possibility that Indy might be tampered with any more that he already has been, Spielberg clarified his statement, explaining that “it’s not a new genre at all.” Rather, instead of “genre,” he meant to say “MacGuffin”:

“It’s all the same genre. It’s just the MacGuffin that changes. The MacGuffin was the Ark of the Covenent in Raiders, the Holy Grail in The Last Crusade, and the skull in The Crystal Skull. That’s what always changes, and that’s what we always look for…

“It’s up to George. We have already agreed on the [MacGuffin] of the fifth movie, we already have a concept in mind. I don’t know where George is with the story. There is no Indy 5 until George says there is.”

So there you have it—Indy will stay the same. Hopefully he’ll even go back to normal, and our long national nightmare that began with the last film can finally end.

What do you think of the Indy 5 news?

Last night the AFI festival hosted the first public screening of director Steven Spielberg‘s The Adventures of Tintin. Or, that is to say, the first public screening in America – the film has been open outside of the U.S. for more than a month, and has already made over $100 Million internationally. Spielberg’s first animated/motion-captured film, it stars Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in an adventure story where Tintin comes across clues to pirate treasure. We’ll have a longer review when the film is released, but check out our quick thoughts…

Though much lighter and much more kid-centric than the Indiana Jones films, Tintin was approached by Spielberg from a child’s perspective, and so Tintin (played by Jamie Bell) is much gentler and far less quotable than Indy. That’s not a knock on the film, merely an acknowledgement that those looking for Raiders redux will be disappointed. That said, it’s also a better action movie than the last Indy adventure, and maybe a little better than Last Crusade. Untethered from cranes or having to worry about where the camera is, Spielberg’s visual panache is unmatched, and there is an extended one shot action set piece that validates his decision to do this animated. If W.C. Fields complained about working with children and animals (Tintin has a charming dog named Snowy), Spielberg’s found the best workaround.

And when Spielberg removed guns from E.T. for the special edition, there was a worry that he had gotten a little soft. So when Tintin goes for a gun early on there’s a slight transgressive thrill – and Tintin uses that gun from time to time (that said, never at people). Though it takes a while to get going, once the adventure starts, the film becomes nearly non-stop action as Tintin is kidnapped and sent to the Middle East where the evil Sakharine (Daniel Craig) has both Tintin and Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) held hostage in the hopes of uncovering pirate treasure. Tintin escapes with Haddock and they must figure out the secret of his lineage.

Though the script by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish is solid, the real delight here is watching Spielberg play, and though there were definite sequences in his Jurassic Park films that had Spielberg firing on all cylinders, this movie is more consistently entertaining, and Spielberg’s classic cleverness stamps the film repeatedly. A great sequence tends to make me cackle and there are a number here that are awe inspiring in his staging. Seeing Spielberg – one of the greatest living directors – have this much fun is infectious. The Adventures of Tintin opens December 21 stateside and it’s well worth checking out.

Are you excited for Tintin?

With a passing as monumental as Steve Jobs, word is coming from many famous people their thoughts on the man and his work. Steven Spielberg said “Steve Jobs was the greatest inventor since Thomas Edison. He put the world at our fingertips.” And with Twitter it’s been easy for celebrities to share their reactions.

Arnold Schwarzenegger tweeted “Steve lived the California Dream every day of his life and he changed the world and inspired all of us.” while Paris Hilton said “So sad to hear about Steve Jobs. He was a genius and one of the most innovative people on earth. He changed the world in so many ways.” The event prompted a record-breaking amount of tweets, at the rate of 10,000 per second, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kevin Smith wrote “Steve Jobs! Thanks for never settling for the way things were during a life you spent showing us how things could be. O Captain! My captain!” While Ashton Kutcher added “I never thought I could be so busted up about the loss of someone I never met” Roger Ebert noted a sentiment many expressed: “I’m reading about the loss of Steve Jobs on the 17th Macintosh I’ve owned.” Albert Brooks added “Had the pleasure of working for him and knowing him. He was our Edison. R.I.P. Steve Jobs.”

Bono, reached for comment by MTV due to U2′s help in selling the iPod, said “Steve told me as proud as he was of Apple and Pixar, his real pride was his family. He was a thoughtful and tender father, and loved nothing more than hanging out in the house with his belle Laurene and the kids. I already miss him … one of a very small group of anarchic Americans who through technology literally invented the 21st century. We will all miss the hardware software Elvis.”

Did you tweet about Steve Jobs?

Steven Spielberg‘s latest film War Horse is already considered an Oscar contender even though no one (outside of its makers) have seen it. Once you see the trailer, you’ll know why. Set in World War I, it tells the story of a boy (Jeremy Irvine) and his horse, with the horse shipped off to war, only for the boy to chase after it. Some have called it Saving Mr. Ed, but with Spielberg’s touch it looks to be a powerhouse. Check out the trailer…

What’s interesting here is that Tom Hiddleston shows up, and post-Thor it’s hard to know if he’s playing the good guy he appears to be on screen. Playing an arch villain can do that. The trailer also highlights that Spielberg has one of the greatest eyes in cinema history, so what could be cloying about the film may be kept at bay.

The film is set to be released December 25, so it’s definitely going to be in the Oscar race. We’re still at least a month out for long-lead reviews that could cement the film’s place as the front-runner. That said, let’s just hope for a good movie. But considering Spielberg’s track record, the worst thing that could happen is that it’s another Amistad. That though seems doubtful.

What’s your favorite (and least favorite) Steven Spielberg film?

Wants Steven Spielberg To Direct Moses Biopic" width="570" height="390" />

Hey, ever wish there was an epic film that told the life story of Moses, following his tale from birth to the moment when he parted the Red Sea with the powers of the Big Guy spurring him on? Gosh, wouldn’t that be a cool film? Maybe you could give it a biblical name, like, The Ten Commandments, or something like that, you know? Well, since a classic movie like that has never, ever been made, Warner Bros. has decided to make Gods and Kings, an epic film about the life of Moses, to be possibly directed by Steven Spielberg.

According to Deadline:

“Getting Spielberg is a long shot on any film because his deal is complex, his dance card is always full, and Warner Bros would have to be willing to share the picture with DreamWorks. Still, I’ve heard there will be a discussion. Gods and Kings covers the life of Moses from birth to death. In between, there is his awakening to the plight of the Hebrew slaves that led Moses’ struggle against the Pharaoh for their freedom out of Egypt; the Ten Plagues; the Burning Bush; the daring escape across the Red Sea; receiving the Ten Commandments, and delivery to Israel. The film is not a remake of the 1956 Cecile B. DeMille-directed The Ten Commandments, which covered similar ground.”

Didja hear that, you guys? It’s totally not a remake of The Ten Commandments, even though it will tell the same story, and feature the same characters, and take place in the same time period. Oh, and this has nothing to do with the fact that The Ten Commandments “was one of the most profitable films of its era, grossing $65 million in the 1950s, which is close to $1 billion if adjusted for inflation.” Nope, nothing at all. This is just because Moses was a great guy, you guys. Really. This isn’t a wholly unnecessary remake of The Ten Commandments. Really.

What do you think of the Moses movie news?

The nice thing about being Steven Spielberg is that if you’ve got a film scheduled for release in December, you’re already considered one of – if not the – front runner for the Oscars. Such is his War Horse, which stars relative newcomer Jeremy Irvine along with Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Watson and David Thewlis. This buzz is also based on the trailer, and now there’s a poster. Check it out…

This appears to be Spielberg in John Ford territory – sweeping vistas, war torn countries, a painter’s eye. It’s the story of Jeremy Irvine’s Albert, whose horse ends up in World War I. Too young to fight, Albert decides to go off to save his horse. This “boy and his horse” angle seems a bit cute for Spielberg of recent – this might have been a bit saccharine had he directed it in the late 80′s, but post-Munich, it’s hard to say that this won’t have some bite.

War Horse is set to be released December 28, where it will be going up against Tintin, which is also directed by Steven Spielberg. Though not specified, likely there will be a New York/ Los Angeles roll-out, and then a nation-wide release (possibly a week or two later). As for its Oscar chances it’s hard to say at this early date, but I wouldn’t bet against Spielberg.

Who do you think is the front runner currently for the Best Picture Oscar?

Here we are at the press conference for The Adventures of Tintin with the big man himself Steven Spielberg and his surprise guest Peter Jackson out at Comic-Con. The duo just finished premiering their new footage for the film at their panel in Hall H which seemed to be very well received. Now we’re here, front and center getting video of the magical duo talking about their latest film. Check out our quick update directly after the press conference with highlights followed by our videos of the press conference (coming soon!) below. And until then, you can check out a newly released photo from Paramount of Tintin below…

(Note: this is a live transcript, there are some areas that have yet to be expanded on and possible typos. Please stand by for completion.)

Talk about using motion-capture on this film, and why you decided to use it?

PJ: The thing that we wanted to do… motion capture is not a genre, It’s a tool it’s a technique, we really tried to use motion capture and traditional animation. Steven or I, who are more adept to live action, we wanted to be able to walk into this work with the characters and location, pick up the camera and shoot a live action movie inside this photo real world — it’s the way that we can shoot a movie inside of that world, which is pretty interesting to me.

SS: The medium is not the message but the character and the plot is. You’re going to forget if it’s 3D or 1.85… if any movie is working, how it was made will be the least of your concern you’ll only have a good time.

Most actors love having their costumes and set to help them work, what challenges did you face with your actors not having that?

SS: I’ve always found that that the costumes, and wigs in, lets say a live action drama, even though it gives them a sense of ambiance and evironment… it all comes down to the actors looking each other in the eye, that’s where the story is told. Actors need actors to act together. So after looking at each other in the suits with motion capture things on their faces and laughing at each other for 10 minutes and getting that out of their system, they’re performing characters, and looking each other in the eyes which is the secret to great acting. That’s great acting. They’re skills see them through, not what they where or who they are.

Is Prof Calculus in this movie?

PJ: No he’s not. He doesn’t yet make his appearance, but if we’re lucky enough to do more movies there’s opportunities for more stories,.

SS I’m just really glad you know who he is!

Is it easier to make movies now in the digital era or do you miss your youth?

SS: It may be a digital era in terms of certain kinds of movies, it’s still an analog era in terms of telling the story. There’s nothing more important to either of us than the story.

Obviously you’re a fan of the series, but what can you bring to fans of the series and fans of you?

SS: I hope Peter is scheduled to direct the next film which does include Prof Calculus and I look forward to working with him how he just worked with me, as he supported me in every creative decision I made, everything from [the details] in the start and to sitting here with you.

How do you avoid the “Dead Eye” problem that can come with the territory?

PJ: When you’re casting and shooting, that’s the most important thing, any great actor knows how to use their eyes and as a filmmaker I love those huge close ups. When I was doing “LOTR,” in New Zealand, we built the eyes that we used in a scientific way, we studied them (goes into detail)… with “King Kong” his eyes told you everything. And “Avatar” the eyes were critical there. I agree with you, with Tintin, our cast had to be as expressive as in any live action film.

What is it that touched you about Tintin?

SS: He’s an intrepid reporter who does more and gets into trouble (he expands).

PJ You never give up once you start, which is what you got through when making a movie too!

In the story, there’s a lot of him falling into a hole, how did you avoid that, or make it cinematic?

SS: Tintin does fall in a hole! But he gets up quick enough to allow the story to continue. There’s a lot of plot, look at the books, there’s a lot of narrative. In the middle of all that forward motion we take the time to let the characters have a relationship with one another. And time to why Captain Haddock drinks and is the man he is today (go back to that). It was important to take rest stops to get to know the people involved.

What do you do when you’re on a project and you realize that you’ve made a mistake? No one can always be right!

SS: I have a lot of those. I’ve never had that when the film is half-shot. When I have realized that, I have embarked on that project and made those movies. (He expands)

PJ: When you start a film, I shut my eyes and imagine the movie finished, even the music, but then the process you’re constantly discovering new things all the time. Production designers, DPs, it’s always evolving. With Tintin the process was even more stimulating because it starts with a simple animation and you’re slowly layering and layering it.

What did you learn from working with one another?

PJ: The things that surprised me, thinking about his huge body of work that’s effected all of us, I thought that he would have a kind of a process… but what I discovered, which was delightful, is that he walks onto the set and it’s like his first time to walk on a film set. There’s a childlike excitement that he brings onto every film…

SS: He doesn’t let anything rattle him, to where he becomes locked into indecision. He’s a problem solver, he looks at things from several different angle and then picks the best solution to the problem,… if I was more like him, I’d save myself a lot of footage! He has a great sense of seeing the big picture and achieving that emotional moment. We were like to code-breakers trying to figure this code out together, and once we realized that, there was no competition, just two Tintin fanboys trying to bring this movie to you!

What do you see as the 3D future, since people are so used to it? Or does it really enhance?

SS: I’m hoping that 3d gets to the point where people stop noticing, so that people see that. And then ticket prices will drop to the level of 2D. To show a 3D next to a 2D move, hopefully the price will come down which will be fair to the consumer. Not all films should be shot in 3D, I wouldn’t shoot a romantic type film with it. The last great one that I saw, which I’ll mention even though I was a part of (laughs), was “Transformers 3″ which was the most amazing experience I’ve had since “Avatar”. People who do it just to commercialize, they should care how to do it better, and bring collaborators and other directors who know how to use it, to help teach them, because it’s not a fire and forget tool (he goes on and expands), it takes a lot of very careful consideration.

PJ: Obviously after “Avatar” it survived for a while, but audiences have realized that their are bad movies that can be in 3D which is more expensive then the one in 2D. There’s a natural human response, which has to do with the increased ticket prices (he expands). With the right movie it can enhance the experience. It can make a great film really amazing to see! Something has to be done about the experience.

And now we’re beginning to get ready to start. Sadly we won’t be able to bring you video directly as Paramount has given it the boot BUT we will bring you photos from them soon!

It’s still a bit shocking that there isn’t a steady drumbeat of geek excitement for a project that unites Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson and Edgar Wright together, but such is the case with The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. Perhaps it’s a general disappointment with non-James Cameron motion capture. Regardless, there’s a new trailer for Tintin, which stars Jamie Bell as the titular Tintin, and Daniel Craig as Red Haddock. Take a look…

Perhaps this project should have had a year long roll-out, but we’ve yet to see the marketing plans on this one. Since Tintin is a more beloved international character, there’s the question of selling it to Americans. Do you have to introduce the character to them, or do you let the film do the work? We’ve seen what a long gestation period did for Tron Legacy, and the answer was: not much.

But with this dream team of talent, the natural parallel would be to Raiders of the Lost Ark, which put Spielberg together with George Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan and Phillip Kaufman. The other fascinating thing is that Spielberg will have two films opening up against each other. Tintin is due December 23, while War Horse is scheduled for December 28 (likely the latter is a limited engagement). Spielberg has had two film years, in 1989 both Always and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade came out, in 1993 it was Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List, in 1997 there was The Lost World and Amistad. In all previous cases those films were separated by months – not days. We shall see.

Did you ever read Tintin?

Just in time for a Christmas 2011 release, the trailer for a film about a young man and his beloved best friend, a horse. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film is Mr. Ed: The Motion Picture and it will drop this holiday season.

OK, that’s not true, it’s a Spielberg-directed tale called War Horse about a young man named Anthony who is split from his beloved best friend, a horse named Joey, because of World War I, and who longs to be reunited with his equine pal. You decide which films sounds more silly after checking out the trailer below.

Cheesy sentimentality? Check. Syrupy and sweeping John Williams string section? Check. Kind of an odd and obsessive relationship between a horse and the boy who pines for him by repeatedly sketching the horse’s image? Check, and ew.

But hey, if Spielberg can make the relationship between a small boy and a wrinkled potato-giraffe thing in E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial insanely heartwarming (OK, so maybe I cry my eyes out every time it’s on TV, what of it?), he can probably pull this off, too. I mean, it’s got the syrupy strings, you guys. The syrupy strings!

What do you think of the trailer for War Horse?
