The first thing you’ll notice when you look at this list of nominees is that there are many glaring omissions.  Most notably, current Best Original Screenplay front-runner Inglorious Basterds.  Not to worry, Tarantino fans, Basterds failed to qualify under WGA rules, which require scripts to be written for productions that are signatories to the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement, or the agreement of affiliated international guilds.

Other big-time Oscar contenders for screenplay awards that didn’t meet these requirements include District 9, An Education, In The Loop, Fantastic Mr. Fox, A Single Man and Up.

Producers Guild of America Nominees

Following the suit of Oscar, the Producers Guild has expanded their nominee list to ten films this year, and that move has yielded a few surprises.

Sci-Fi crowd favorites Star Trek and District 9 found their way onto the Guild’s shortlist along with the requisite cadre of prestige pictures and critical darlings to round out the rest of the top ten.  Notably absent from the list is Nine, whose Oscar hopes are fading fast.

Will Oscar follow the PGA’s lead and use its ten slots to throw in a few movies that audiences liked as well as critics?  We’ll have to wait and see.

This past summer, Leonard Nimoy appeared in JJ AbramsStar Trek reboot as his iconic character Mr. Spock alongside his replacement Zachary Quinto. A lot of us thought that William Shatner would do the same and reprise his role as Captain Kirk, but were disappointed when it didn’t happen. It turns out that the actor was written into the original screenplay, and a scene featuring Shatner has been dug up for all to see.

The 13th annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood awards have announced that Director Kathryn Bigelow will be honored with the “Hollywood Director Award”, Screenwriter Nora Ephron will be presented with the “Hollywood Screenwriter Award”, Disney/Pixar’s UP will get the “Hollywood Animation Award” and Scott Farrar, visual effects supervisor for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will receive the “Hollywood Visual Effects Award” at the festivals Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony.
