The Official Trailer For ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Has Been Released

As we noted on Monday, we were able to attend a sneak preview of new Amazing Spider-Man footage, along with the official trailer… and now, the trailer has been released for everyone to see. Curious as to what The Lizard looks like? Do the shots of Spidey web-slinging across New York look less CGI-y than the Sam Raimi films? Can Andrew Garfield pull off playing a high school student? Check out the trailer after the jump for answers.

While this trailer seemed much more epic on the big screen and in 3-D, it’s still not bad, even in a compressed YouTube fashion:

So what did you think? Yes, it’s retelling the origin story of Spider-Man and yes, it features another scientist gone mad after an experiment goes awry, but in all, we think the trailer looks great. In it, we get a look at the dynamic between Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, and her dad (and it’s complicated), we see the cocky, sarcastic humor of Parker as Spider-Man, and we catch glimpses of the creature known as The Lizard. More importantly, something that was on ever more of a display at Monday’s screening can be witnessed—while this may be a special effects-laden comic book film, it’s one that seems deeply focused on characters. Unlike the last few Marvel films, The Amazing Spider-Man seems less interested in franchise building, or setting up other films, and is more about telling a new and exciting story about characters that fans cherish.

First Look: 10 Minutes Of New ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Footage Reviewed!

Warning! Some spoilers!!

OK, Spider-Man fans, have I got some news for you: after having just left a screening of the new Amazing Spider-Man trailer (check it out) as well as about 10 minutes of new footage, I can say this: any doubts or fears about this reboot not living up to the potential, heart and scope of the first two Sam Raimi Spidey-ficks can now be dispelled. Amazing, indeed.

Given, the special screening (held worldwide in various theaters, from here in L.A. to New York, London, Rio, Tokyo and more) wasn’t of the whole film, and so a complete and total opinion cannot yet be formed. That said, we were given several extended glimpses into the lives of Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, Dr. Connors/Lizard, and more, and despite all the flashy special effects (some of which were not completed, some of which were breathtaking), what really caught hold were the performances and moments between characters. The upcoming film seems to be—again, judging by the footage seen today—not just a Marvel cash-in on a popular name brand, but also a genuine attempt to translate the Spider-Man franchise into a more “realistic” and human series of films than the previous three.

Complaints? If there were any, it was that once again we seem to be watching Spider-Man fighting a good scientist whose experiments have driven him mad. Beyond that, nada. Spoilers? Well, it seems that Peter Parker’s father, and possibly his untimely death, are tied into the early history of Doc Connors; Gwen Stacy’s dead unmasks Spider-Man in front of an armed police squad in the middle of a busy city street; and we get to see Pete construct his web-slingers, as featured in the comics.

In all, it seemed as if director Mark Webb has attempted to wed the epic and dramatic heft of the wonderfully grandiose and operatic first two Spider-Man films with gritty realism of a certain Christopher Nolan franchise that has now become the yardstick for “realistic” comic book films, making The Amazing Spider-Man shoot up from a film I was mildly curious about and into a movie I cannot wait to see.

PS: The Lizard in 3-D? Gotta admit, it was the coolest thing I’ve seen on the big screen in quite awhile.

Latest Avengers Pictures and Superhero Cameo Rumors

With less than four months to go until the launch of the The Avengers, we’re getting all sorts of stories, pictures and rumors about the film, which has a May 4 release date. Of late, Empire Magazine has had four character-specific covers, there’s hints at what the film’s Hulk might look like, and a completely baseless rumor about a possible Marvel franchise cross-over. Take a look….

Empire has four covers for the movie with Robert Downey Jr., Scarlet Johansson, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth, and you can view those on their site, or right here:

Empire also has a sculpture for the upcoming Hulk Toy, and here’s some artwork from the likely film-approved comic-book tie-in.

But the most iffy news to come out is that Jenny Agutter (best known for her work in such films as Walkabout and An American Werewolf in London) was interviewed by The Radios Times, and talked about her role in the film where she mentioned how much secrecy was involved in making the movie. Though Agutter is not directly quoted, she supposedly shared Winnebagos with Iron Man and – more interestingly Spider-Man. Spider-Man is currently owned cinematically by Sony, and though it’s possible that the companies could work out some sort of cross-over for promotion, it seems more likely that the journalist or Miss Agutter are not all that comic-book savvy and thought the web-slinger was in the film. But what is the internet for if not baseless speculation?

First Look: The Lizard Design From ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Has Leaked! [Spoilers]

See The Lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man after the jump!

Curious as to what The Lizard looks like in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man film starring Andrew Garfield as Spidey and Rhys Ifans as The Lizard? Well, Sony and Columbia Pictures have been keeping things pretty close to their collective vests as far as The Lizard goes, keeping the make-up and CGI of the Lizard secret for months. And then, thanks to the fact that the companies have licensed away just about everything connected to the movie, the Lizard’s look has leaked—on a freaking Pez dispenser. Check it out below.

So, what do you think? Seems like a fairly realistic, humanoid version of the beast from the Spider-Man comics, although I don’t know if I want to eat pill-shaped candies that shoot out of its neck/torso areas. Still, it’s a pretty cool look, steering away from what could have been an extremely cartoonish design that would have undermined the whole film.

That said—it seems like maybe Sony and Columbia Pictures could have worked a little harder to keep things under wraps. You know, “Dear Pez: Please don’t undermine our entire marketing campaign by releasing a candy holder that utilizes our secret villain design eight months before our movie comes out. Thanks!”

James Vanderbilt Already On Deck to Write Sequel to New Spider-Man

Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man may be in the middle of shooting, but that hasn’t stopped the studios from hiring James Vanderbilt to write the sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Vanderbilt has successfully pitched his continuation of the narrative, and will commence writing shortly. The current film stars Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, along with Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Rhys Ifans, and Sally Field.

There are two ways to read this development. One is that the execs are very happy with the footage that Webb has shot, and are looking to get ahead of the game. There were three year gaps between the previous sequels, and if Vanderbilt can start writing now then they could be ready to go with the next one at a much quicker clip. The latest Spider-Man film is due July 3, 2012, and if they’ve got a good working script by then and are geared for pre-production, the next could be ready for Christmas 2013 or Summer 2014. And since studios stake out franchise tentpoles years in advance, this isn’t that surprising.

The other way to read this is that – regardless of how it’s turning out – the studio would rather have the script in development now than wait to see if it works because when it comes to these sorts of films the script is the cheapest part. Likely the next picture won’t get green-lit until they’ve seen it, and surely they’ll wait for opening weekend to see if audiences are okay with switching directors, stars and narrative. But also the studio wants to hold on to the rights for Spider-Man as a character, and to do so they have to keep films in production. It’s possible they will churn out more – whether audiences like it or not – because there will always be something of an audience.

Though the idea of the reboot came across as a terrible idea, the premise of different people running with the franchise ball doesn’t seem too far from the numerous writers over the years giving Spider-Man different story arcs. There are multiple iterations of Spidey already in comic book form, why not on the big screen?

Over the past year, we’ve been referring to Marc Webb’s upcoming Spider-Man flick as just that…Spider-Man, but the name has always been tentative. Sony Pictures has finally released the official title in a press announcement, as well as a new image from the film. Say goodbye to Spider-Man and say hello to The Amazing Spider-Man. Dun! Dun! Dun! Dun!!

If you didn’t think that Spidey wore mechanical web shooters in this film, this photo should clear up any confusion. They’re right there in plain sight. As for the movie, not only does it have a new title but it also has an official website that is now online. Check out the details below.

CULVER CITY, Calif., February 14, 2011 – Columbia Pictures announced today that the title of the next Spider-Man film will be The Amazing Spider-Man. The studio simultaneously released a photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, the first shot of Garfield in the famous full mask and suit.

The film, which is now in production and is being shot entirely in 3D, will be released on July 3, 2012. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the Marvel Entertainment production for Columbia Pictures. The executive producers are Stan Lee, Kevin Feige, and Michael Grillo. New Spider-Man Set Photos – He’s on the Run

Poor Andrew Garfield may have gotten the shaft this morning, when the 2011 Oscar nominations were revealed but he’s still got Spider-Man to lean on. He’s the star of the upcoming reboot from Sony Pictures, and we’ve discovered some new set photos that feature Spidey hopping around downtown Los Angeles in his new, sleek suit. Take a look…

Every time a new set of paparazzi photos appear with him in the suit, the old Spider-Man theme plays in our heads. He’s so lanky and svelte. This version looks nothing like Tobey Maguire’s bulky incarnation of the hero, and we’re not saying one is better than the other — just different.

This new group of photos come from Marie Claire, as in Marie Claire, the women’s fashion and lifestyle magazine. Even they want to know what the new Spidey has been up to! This is the second set of photos where we’ve seen the character chasing after this same pick up truck. What’s in there that has him so riled up? We’ll have to wait until the movie is released to find out.

Spider-Man is scheduled to hit theaters on July 3, 2012.

Spider-Man has been very busy lately. Between jumping on trucks and sulking in the rain, the webbed superhero has had his hands full. Earlier this week we saw some photos and footage of a stunt performer on the film set, but we couldn’t get any details regarding his suit. He was too far away. But now a larger photo has appeared online and it highlights everything, including mechanical web shooters! Take a look…

Can we examine this suit for a minute? This is the first time we see the mask because in the official photo with Andrew Garfield he’s not wearing it. It doesn’t appear to be anything special. The biggest thing to take note of are the mechanical web shooters. In the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy Peter Parker’s web was organic, and there was nothing mechanical about them.

Overall, the suit is streamlined and the stunt performer is lean and mean. The look definitely takes a few notes from the Ultimate Spider-Man comic as opposed to the traditional one. Once the movie goes into post production we’re sure Spidey’s ensemble will get hit with a lot of airbrushing and extra gloss for a super photogenic effect. They’ll make it work.

Spider-Man On Set Footage, J. Jonah Jameson Won’t Be in The Film?

Over the past week, several behind the scenes photos and videos have appeared online from Sony’s Spider-Man reboot. The film is currently being shot in Los Angeles, and the latest footage comes from a high pursuit chase scene that takes place in the downtown area. You can check out the video and the photos below…

For those of you with bad eyes, we can clarify what’s going on in this scene. Spider-Man (obviously a stunt double) is being followed by a black truck that has a camera rig on it. He runs, turns the corner, spots a pick up truck and does a frontwards flip into the trunk.

In other news, we’ve learned that the editor and chief of the Daily Bugle won’t appear in this Spider-Man adventure. According to IGN, “J. Jonah Jameson won’t be in the movie. That’s right, Spidey fans. We’ve confirmed that no one will be growling “Parker!” in this 3D reboot. So much for those rumors about John Slattery or Sam Elliott playing him.”

Spider-Man won’t be the same without his over the top mustache and loud voice!

Photos: Denis Leary on Spider-Man Set

More behind the scenes set photos have been released from Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot. This time we get our first look at Denis Leary’s character Captain George Stacy, who’s the father of Emma Stone’s character Gwen. Over the past month the film has been shooting in Los Angeles and we’ve seen our fair share of paparazzi shots of Stone and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker. Now it’s time to see what Leary’s been up to…

As you can see they made Leary cut his trademark shaggy hair for something a little more close to the scalp. It will be interesting to see how different his portrayal of this character is from his role on the TV series “Rescue Me.”

The role of George Stacy was previously played by James Cromwell in Spider-Man 3, and those two look absolutely nothing alike. In the Spider-Man comic, Senior Stacy dies in a confrontation between the webslinger and Doctor Octopus, which causes Gwen to hate the superhero. We wonder if he’ll meet a similar fate in this film? Stone was spotted shooting some funeral scenes last month.

Spider-Man will open in theaters nationwide on July 3, 2012.

It’s what we’ve all been waiting for. Columbia Pictures has finally released the first photo of Andrew Garfield dressed as Spider-Man. Many of you have been wondering if he has what it takes to pull off the suit, and now you can find out. Check out Garfield in full Spidey gear below…

Prior to trying on the coveted suit, Garfield admitted that he got a little emotional.

“I won’t lie. I shed a tear when I first wore the spandex. I didn’t think that the spandex would make me so emotional, but it did. I have to kind of not look at my face because it doesn’t make sense to me,” he said. “I have to imagine that it’s a much better actor’s face in that suit.”

To be honest, he’s a lot skinnier than what we’re used to. When Tobey Maguire played the part, they made him bulk up. Perhaps all those rumors about the film being based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comic are true. This look fits that version of the hero much more than the traditional one.

Spider-Man is scheduled to hit theaters on July 3, 2012.

Andrew Garfield on Playing Spider-Man and Wearing the Suit

Andrew Garfield has come a long way from his early days of acting across the pond. The U.K. native has landed several high profile gigs over the past year that have placed him in Hollywood’s forefront. He has a Golden Globe nomination under his belt, he’s being considered for BAFTA’s Rising Star Award, and did we forget to mention that he’s Spider-Man? Garfield recently revealed that his predecessor Tobey Maguire had given him his stamp of approval to take over as the webslinger, and we all know that with great power comes great responsibility.

Garfield knows that playing a Marvel superhero is a huge deal. The original Spider-Man trilogy broke records and catapulted the careers of its stars. The actor feels the pressure and wants people to know that he understands the seriousness of his task.

“I see it as a massive challenge in many ways. To make it authentic. To make the character live and breathe in a new way. The audience already has a relationship with many different incarnations of the character. I do, as well. I’m probably going to be the guy in the movie theater shouting abuse at myself. But I have to let that go. No turning back. And I wouldn’t want to.”

That was taken from Garfield’s interview in the latest issue of Details, which he appears on the cover of. When speaking to London’s Capital FM, the actor revealed that when he put on the Spider-Man suit for the first time he got a little misty eyed.
