Taylor Lautner is a Teeney-bopper Bourne in Abduction Trailer

Post-Twilight: New Moon, Taylor Lautner became viable as a leading man. He was mentioned for everything, he was the default setting for casting “wants.” Well, the John Singleton film Abduction is going to be his make or break outside of the Twilight franchise. Lautner stars as a teen who feels disconnected from his peers when a ladyfriend suggests he may be a kidnap victim. But then a greater conspiracy is revealed. The film comes out September 23. Check out the trailer…

The one thing this movie’s going to have to show is if Lautner can act. He looks convincing leaping over things and the action elements, but in the trailer he has all the resolve and charisma of a Tickle Me Elmo. Being good looking only gets you so far on the big screen. To help out the cast is loaded with ringers, including Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, and Maria Bello, which should help some. Lily Collins is the female lead, it’s unknown what she can bring to this table.

John Singleton went from Oscar nominee to schlock auteur, and the change fits him. He can do dumb action well enough. The September release date seems to suggest the film is a pile. We’ll know soon enough.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite on the big screen this weekend for their new comedy Paul. Like they’re previous works, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, which poked fun at the horror and action genre, Paul places the focus on science fiction. It’s a comedic take on what would happen if you mixed the movie Alien with Fanboys. Check out our review…

The Plot:

Clive and Graeme are two sci-fi enthusiasts who travel from the U.K. to the U.S. to attend San Diego Comic-Con. After the convention wraps they take a road trip across the Southwest, where they visit several famous UFO landmarks including Area 51. During one of their stops they meet Paul, an alien who’s on the run from the government. He enlists the help of Clive and Graeme, who dodge FBI agents, red necks, and Bible thumpers to get him where he needs to be.

The Good:

Simon Pegg/Nick Frost: The chemistry between these two is undeniable. They’re naturally funny apart, so when they’re together comedy ensues. If you’re a fan of their previous collaborations, you won’t be disappointed with their performances in Paul.
Paul: Paul is a pleasant surprise. At first glance, he comes across as a rude, slimy, untrustworthy creature but he’s actually a heartwarming character that you learn to love as the movie progresses.
The Big Guy: Sigourney Weaver plays the main villain, who’s affectionately called The Big Guy. Her casting in this role is pure genius considering her longstanding battle with aliens for the majority of her career. There’s only a choice few actresses who can pull off masculine characters believably and she’s one of them!

The Bad:

Throwaway Characters: There are more than a few oddballs who interfere with Paul, Clive, and Graeme’s journey including a couple of agents in training, some hillbillies, and a religious zealot. All of them are one dimensional characters who serve no purpose to the story. They could have scrapped them and given more screen time to those who mattered.
Agent Zoil: I love Jason Bateman, therefore it hurts me to say this: Agent Zoil dropped the ball. The majority of the film, Zoil is the straight man against all the other goofball characters, a role that Bateman is used to pulling off (Arrested Development anyone?) but his character wasn’t fun, witty, or interesting. Anyone could have played Zoil. It didn’t have to be Bateman. His talent was wasted here.

Overall:

Paul is a road trip movie that pokes fun at the sci-fi genre and the fan boy culture. It’s campy and comedic fun.

Rating: 7.5/10

Paul opens in theaters everywhere on March 11th.

You Again: Movie Review

Celebrating 10 years of collaboration, director Andy Fickman and actress Kristen Bell team up for this weekend’s Touchstone Pictures release, You Again. The family comedy sports a fabulous cast including Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, Betty White, and Kristen Chenoweth plus a handful of cameos – and they’re all here to help you revisit the demons of your adolescence. The film hits cinemas nationwide this Friday.

The Plot:

Upon returning home to NorCal for her brother’s wedding, Marni (Bell) learns that his fiance is her high school arch nemesis, Joanna (Yustman). She’s horrified/heartbroken and fully intends on not only destroying their engagement to save her brother from marrying the devil – but on getting her long overdue revenge. The juice gets thicker when we learn that Marni’s mom, Gail (Curtis) and Joanna’s aunt, Ramona (Weaver) also have a rocky high school history – and the wounds are still deep.

The Good:

Ensemble: Fickman hit the jackpot with this seasoned group of female comedians. The roles were obviously exaggerated for the sake of comedy, but they each possessed strong character specificity and arc – comedic timing was critical here, and because it’s an ensemble based film one bad performance could’ve but a huge damper on the overall quality of the project. Everyone brought their A-game – woo hoo!
Universal Appeal: You’ll find that the story itself is pretty outrageous and the wave of chaos these characters are swept under is clearly heightened – it’s Disney, let’s be real. But this idea that everyone in some capacity grapples with “demons” from their adolescence really strikes a chord. The teenage years are generally perceived as the toughest, and whether you’re 4 years out or 40 years out, it’s hard to forget the people who gave you a hard time (or made you feel more awkward than you already did).
Not Destroyed By Disney: The film is perfectly Disney-proof, if you will. But it still has an entertaining edge that can appeal to people who are looking for a little more than what can amuse their 11 year-olds. This is absolutely a family comedy – there’s something in it for everyone. Even your grandparents.

The Good/Bad:

Heads up: The film is precisely what the trailer makes it out to be. If you’re down for something you can take your little sister or parents to and get a few laughs, You Again is perfect. It’s light hearted and shouldn’t be taken for more than it is: a family comedy. Keep your expectations in that ball park and you won’t be disappointed.

Interview: Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver For You Again

“Frenemies?” No, sir. Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver sharpen their claws for Andy Fickman’s upcoming comedy, You Again, where they play childhood rivals – but off screen these two can’t get enough of each other and co-stars Betty White, Kristen Bell, and Odette Yustman. It’s an estrogen party!

We recently had an opportunity to sit down with Curtis and Weaver to hear their two cents on the picture, so check out the interview below…

Before any questions are posed, Jamie Lee struts directly to the beverage table and dives into an opening statement of sorts…

Jamie Lee Curtis: Here’s what you need to know about me. I’ve never met Sigourney Weaver. I’ve heard about her. She went to Yale, she’s very tall. We’ve been up for a lot of movies together – she’s always gotten them. I don’t hold any grudge. She speaks French. She was in the number one movie of all time, I was in the worst piece of shit I’ve ever seen called “Virus” – and yet, my action figure is still bigger than hers. Her action figure was 50% off, mine was a premium cost on Ebay. That’s all I’m saying. The rest of this is irrelevant.

What drew you both to the project?

Jamie Lee Curtis: It was shot in L.A., it was a comedy for Disney, and it was shot during the summer. When they first came to me I said “when’s it going?” They said September. I said, “can’t it be August?” – Because if it was August, I could do it. September is too far into the school year.

Sigourney Weaver: I felt there was a universal story here about people trying to move on as if high school didn’t happen, and you can’t do that. There were a lot of things that really touched me – I thought the script was really funny, I loved the idea of this cast, but also felt that it was really about something important.

Were your high school years turbulent? If so, were you able to pull from the experiences?

SW: I wasn’t worth being tormented, I was lucky in that sense. But there were a couple of girls who were mean to me. Most people were nice to me because they felt sorry for me! I was always homesick, I was at boarding school.

JLC: I think high school is difficult, mostly because people get betrayed. From my experiences it was about betrayal. Giving somebody some information that they don’t know what to do with, so they give it to somebody else…like, “I like him, he’s really cute” Next thing you know, you come up and say, “Jamie likes him!” I didn’t have a “Joanna” (note: The film’s villain).

Andy compiled an ensemble cast of seasoned female comedians to portray this group of crazy women…

SW: It’s so amazing – We had such a great time and it was just an ensemble made in heaven that Andy put together. I think what was so nice was that we didn’t have anything going on that was like movie. We all just loved each other. Jamie Lee and I had such a great time constantly worshiping Betty White. I sat next to Betty and every day she’d be in make up and she’d say “We need to hurry up because I don’t want to be late on set…” We would’ve waited for hours for her. It was like it was her first day of work, she was so humble, so professional.

How was it working with Jamie Lee specifically?

SW: She’s such an amazing woman. She’s so herself. And so unlike anyone I’ve ever met. She comes into the trailer in the morning and takes charge, fixes your hair, brings you a book. She is just a force of nature.

And with Sigourney?

JLC: She is a fantastic woman – I don’t throw my 5 million copies sold number at her at all! She has many more things than I ever will have! I wish her only well and fun.

Sigourney, people are obviously anxious to hear details on a potential Avatar 2. Can you disclose anything?

SW: There definitely will be an Avatar 2. Jim is already at work on it. I’m grateful to Jim for reinventing the 3D as something that has real emotional power. 3D sort of continues to be used in a not very intelligent way, as if it’s a novelty, as if that’s what the audience wants. But what the audience wants is for it to be immersed in an experience that’s really compelling.

So what are your general thoughts on this “3D movement” that’s occurring in Hollywood?

SW: I don’t follow all the stories but I think it should be up to the filmmakers and not dictated by the studio. Each story must invite a certain technology. I think Jim’s technology was so different – so actor oriented. On the DVD you see 40 minutes of us doing performance capture in our little black suits. You’re going to see Zoe Saldana pick up this HUGE kick ass bow and arrow and shoot it. And you’re going to see that the performance capture in Avatar is so inspired and off every nuance of the actors’ performance. Jim is so committed to actors – that’s why he calls it performance capture instead of motion capture.

Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster Reunite with Oren Moverman for Rampart

The Messenger trio is at it again with Oren Moverman’s latest feature Rampart. The director of the post-war drama that earned both Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson critical acclaim has once again enlisted their talents. According to Variety, they’ll join the cast of his new film that also features Anne Heche, Sigourney Weaver, Robin Wright, Steve Buscemi, and Cynthia Nixon. Everyone wants to work with this guy.

The trade states that Rampart is “set against the backdrop of the scandal within the L.A.P.D. Rampart Division in the late 1990s and is the fictional account of a veteran police officer (Harrelson) caught up in the scandal, and his search for redemption.” As someone who lives in Los Angeles, I can tell you from personal experience that the Rampart area looks shady, but who knew it was shady enough to spawn a movie?

Rampart is fully financed and scheduled to begin production on October 25th in (of course) Los Angeles. It will be interesting to see the interaction between all these actors considering the caliber of talent. I don’t know about you but I’m ready to see Sigourney Weaver tackle some material good enough to finally get her an Oscar. Maybe this will be it?

Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver Join Cold Light of Day

What if someone told you that Ellen Ripley and John McClane were teaming up for a kidnapping thriller? If you’re like me you’d click your heels together and start howling at the moon. According to THR, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver will star in a film called The Cold Light of Day, which will feature “The Tudors” star Henry Cavill in the lead role. That’s right, Charles Brandon’s getting some more big screen action!

Mabrouk El Mechri, who directed the well-received Jean-Claude Van Damme faux-documentary JCVD will helm The Cold Light of Day, which centers on “a cocky young Wall Street trader who reluctantly vacations with his family in Spain. When his family is kidnapped, he is thrust into a government conspiracy and must unravel his father’s darkest secret in order to save his loved ones.”

From that tidbit of info, it’s fair to say that Willis and Weaver could be playing the parents of Cavill, which means he’s a super-spawn. Let’s be realistic, McClane and Ripley don’t produce weak offspring. It’s just not genetically possible. Even Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s character kicked ass at some point in Live Free or Die Hard.

The Cold Light of Day is scheduled to start filming on September 6th in Spain.

Comic-Con 2010 Video: Cast of Paul Favorite Comic-Con Moment

Paul director Greg Mottola was joined by his cast including Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Bill Hader, Jeffrey Tambor, Joe Lo Truglio, Seth Rogen and Sigourney Weaver at the film’s official Comic-Con panel. They gave an exclusive sneak peek at the film, and revealed to the audience their favorite Comic-Con moment. Lucky for you we recorded it! Watch their answers below…

The reason this moment is so epic is because Paul takes place at Comic-Con (the majority of it anyway). The characters played by Pegg and Frost are certified geeks and they take a cross country trip to the annual event, which leads them to finding their new alien friend. Unfortunately, we found out a lot of the footage filmed for the movie was recreated at another location because the Comic-Con folks wouldn’t let them film during the actual event. Boo!!!

Anyway, one of the fans who was in attendance at the Paul panel asked the cast what they’re favorite Comic-Con moment has been so far and this is how they answered.

Sigourney Weaver Joins Taylor Lautner in Abduction

How is it that actors we love and respect continue to sign on for Abduction? The film will be directed by John Singleton and will feature Taylor Lautner in the lead. It’s a star vehicle in every sense of the word, which means that the ridiculously talented cast will have to play second fiddle to the youngster and his abs. The latest victim to sign on is Alien and Avatar favorite Sigourney Weaver.

Abduction centers on a young man who discovers that the parents who raised him aren’t his real folks, a revelation that triggers events and leaves him running for his life. Lautner plays the man in question, while Alfred Molina portrays a C.I.A. agent hot on his trail. The Blind Side’s Lily Collins also makes an appearance as Lautner’s girlfriend.

Weaver will play a psychiatrist who tries to help Lautner’s character. Apparently his journey into the past starts when he discovers his own baby picture on a missing persons website. Cue the suspenseful music! Abduction was written by Shawn Christensen and production is scheduled to begin next month in Pittsburgh [July].

You Again Trailer – High School Never Ends

Normally I see a film like this and I immediately cast it off as mundane and pointless, but there is something about running into your old high school nemesis’ and having them be Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver that catches my attention.

You Again is all about how none of us ever, EVER get over high school even if we’ve always wanted to… if you were the nerd who go picked on or the popular kid who everyone thought would go somewhere, there’s something about that time of your life that makes you always try to leave behind but can never escape. And later in life, no matter how successful you are, the second you are faced with someone from that time of your life, you will regress and be left wondering where all your maturity went. Ladies and gentlemen. Let the subtle, under-handed, manipulative cat fights begin…

In our first match of the day we have the lovely (yet perceived as nerdy) Kristen Bell in one corner taking on the luscious locks and hair flips of Odette Yustman. This is no doubt the main line of the movie, but by far and away not the reason to go and see it. You’re going to want to stick around for the main event where we have two screen legends battling it out Sigourney Weaver and Jamie Lee Curtis with Betty White as the Ref of course! I’ll shut up and let you get to what you’re here for…

This could be another payday for the cast, but there is something about it that strikes a chord and I’m giving it a chance to do something more than just waste peoples time! Here’s to hoping!

You Again hits theaters on September 24th, 2010

Sigourney Weaver Says James Cameron Should Have Won Oscar

Surprise, surprise, someone’s calling the Academy out on their questionable voting and it’s veteran actress Sigourney Weaver. According to a report in the New York Post, Weaver recently voiced her opinion over Avatar director James Cameron’s Oscar snub in favor of Kathryn Bigelow and The Hurt Locker.

This year Bigelow became the first woman to win a Best Director Oscar at the Academy Awards. It was a history making moment set up perfectly with the right music and an introduction from Barbra Streisand. We knew as soon as Babs hit the stage Bigelow was going to take home the gold and Cameron wouldn’t earn a companion piece for his 1997 Titanic trophy.

Over the weekend, Weaver spoke to a Brazilian news site and pulled no punches when she attacked Oscar voters on their methods and Cameron’s non-win.

“Jim didn’t have breasts, and I think that was the reason,” Weaver told Brazilian news site Folha Online over the weekend. “He should have taken home that Oscar. In the past, Avatar would have won because they [Oscar voters] loved to hand out awards to big productions, like Ben-Hur. Today it’s fashionable to give the Oscar to a small movie that nobody saw.”

Regarding Bigelow, Weaver is completely right. It was more about the overall idea of the glass ceiling being broken and the ratings that the event would bring. In the end, the Oscars is still a TV program and they want good numbers so they do crazy stuff like invite the cast of Twilight when they have absolutely no business being there. Also, whether they want to admit it or not people think James Cameron is cocky and they hate they fact that he has the top two grossing films of all time. There was no way in hell they were going to let him have all of that and the Oscar.

As for the comment about the Academy screwing over big budget films, once again she’s right. If your movie makes more than a 100 million dollars at the box office your coming to the Oscar plate with two strikes already against you. That’s why when Lord of the Rings: Return of the King won Best Picture and Director a few years ago it was such a big deal. And that’s also why so many people were pissed when The Dark Knight didn’t get a best picture nod despite its great screenplay, polished production design, and amazing direction.

The day the Academy starts awarding performers, films, and directors who actually deserve it, will be the day we see a unicorn fly through a rainbow and eat a bowl of cereal with a leprechaun.

Sigourney Weaver Returning for Avatar 2?

For the over 2 billion people who’ve seen Avatar here’s some interesting news regarding the highly anticipated sequel. The update comes from co-star Siguorney Weaver (Dr. Grace Augustine in the film), who revealed some casting info in a recent interview when she appeared on the French program “Le Grand Journal.”

Spoiler Alert

If you haven’t seen the film, which I doubt at this point, I’m about to give away some of the final act. Dr. Augustine unfortunately doesn’t make it through to the end of the movie due to a fatal gunshot wound. Even when the Na’vi attempt to save her life she still doesn’t pull through, so imagine my surprise when I read that she might be present in Avatar 2. According to her Parisian interview, she was asked if she would be back for the next film and she said that she’s already talked to James Cameron, and would surely be a part of it.

How is that going to happen exactly? Are we going to go into the past or is Grace’s body going to magically regenerate itself? There have been plenty of rumors regarding the plot for Avatar 2 and none of them would make sense with the return of Grace. I love Sigourney Weaver, but don’t stay on board with a film just because it’s the hottest thing smoking.
