New DVD Releases: Shutter Island, From Paris With Love, Curb Your Enthusiasm

If you like TV on DVD then this just might be your dream week. We have all sorts of huge shows hitting us with season-long box sets this week. We’re talking super huge. Like Urkel huge. Plus the entire series of a show that may or may not have a movie coming out based on it. I can’t be to sure, I don’t watch TV, or go to the movies, or go on websites, or look at billboards.

Plus, there’s a little movie by somebody named Martin Scorsese. Never heard of him, but I think the kid’s got promise.

Shutter Island

It’s time for a public service announcement. More a plea for my own sanity. Please, dear Movie Studio Marketing People, when you delay a movie’s release date. Please, for the love of all things good and just, make a new trailer!

Seriously, from basically August 2009 through February 2010, you couldn’t go to a movie without seeing the same Shutter Island preview. We got the same three lines, “For the criminally insane”, “Going somewhere?” and “You’re a rat in a maze,” on an endless loop for almost six months. This on the heels of The Soloist debacle.

What does this incessant playing of the same trailer do? Makes us NOT want to see the movie. By the time it comes out, we’ve already seen the movie for a full 90 minutes so actually seeing how the plot develops seems redundant.

So, seriously, next movie that gets pushed back from the fall to the next spring, please come back with a new trailer. (I’m looking at you, The Adjustment Bureau).

Of course, if you still want to watch this film, you can check it out on DVD. Though I imagine you won’t be watching the trailer on the special features.

“Curb Your Enthusiasm”: Complete Seventh Season

Is it just me, or was this last season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” just the tiniest bit underwhelming.

Firstly, the whole season was hyped as a “Seinfeld” reunion, and that only figured into about 25% of the season. Secondly, that 25% was the weakest part of that season.

It just seems like a strange strategy. Take your series extremely far out of its element to give us something we all want (the return of “Seinfeld”) and then not really deliver with any sort of gusto.

The strange thing – the rest of the season was great, as good as any the show has ever produced. Yet the whole season seemed weighed down by precisely what we thought would make it transcendent.

It’s a funny thing about expectations. They tend to ruin something that might be better than you’re ever allowed to realize.

So when you buy this DVD, do so with tempered “Seinfeld” expectations.

Weekend Box Office: Scorsese Does it Again

Yet again, despite everyone’s gripes about Shutter Island not being “Scorsese enough” for them, it managed to lead the box office pack by over $4 million. The only two newbies on the list this week, Cop Out and The Crazies, both odd medium sized films, managed to rake in about half of what they cost to make. Although Bruce Willis didn’t manage to come in at #1 he did prove to us yet again that he could get a mindless comedy about very little to make nearly $20 million. Not bad my friend…

Weekend Box Office: Scorsese and Leo for the Win

No surprises here, Scorsese and DiCaprio pair up and people will pay to see it. They’d pay $12 to see the two eat dinner. Although Shutter Island was not as “Scorsese” as some people may have expected, it didn’t disappoint and showed that the director still has some new tricks up his sleeve. Sadly, The Ghost Writer, which was almost the same movie, just with Polanksi and Ewan McGregor (another great duo) was only released into four theaters and therefore only made about $200k. Hopefully it will become more available in the coming weeks. Aside from that, Wolfman seems to be flying down the charts faster than an Olympic snowboarder flying down a mountain. Poor Wolfy…

There are a number of films that I’m guessing didn’t do as well as studios had hoped for, From Paris with Love and Edge of Darkness still have a ways to go domestically before they make back there money and Tooth Fairy has only recouped in it’s fifth week.

Luckily Crazy Heart has been perusing the charts for ten weeks now! It’s great to see quality hanging around.

The Dramatic Faces of Leonardo DiCaprio

If there is one thing for certain, it’s that Leonardo DiCaprio gives one hell of a dramatic performance in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island. Although when looking at some of the photos of DiCapri’s reactiion from the film out of context, it’s hard not to snicker. So, we’ve decided to create a collection of some of our favorite photos highlighting Leo’s most unusual yet hilarious “face performances”

The film’s subject matter is a recipe for schizophrenic behavior and Leonardo DiCaprio gives it to us in spades. Shutter Island is a period piece that focuses on two U.S. marshals who think they’re investigating a legitimate psych institution but discover all these horrific secrets brewing beneath the surface. The film takes place in 1954 during the peak of the Cold War era at a time when paranoia was high, and anyone could be confined or criticized for awkward behavior.

During the film, DiCaprio’s character slowly falls into madness and makes the most unusual faces to show his pain. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great actor but I dare you not find at least one of these photos funny!

Movie Releases: Shutter Island, The Ghost Writer, The Good Guy

If there is one thing all the movies coming out this week have in common it’s psychological thrillers with large amounts of talent in each one. What’s bigger than a Martin Scorsese movie starring his muse, one of the hottest actors to play in a film, Leonardo DiCaprio? Shutter Island also boosts a supporting cast of big names like Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley and Michelle Williams, all proven talents in their own right. Then, there’s the other thriller, Ghost Writer by Roman Polanski starring, Ewan McGregor, in a story about (you guessed it) a ghost writer hired to complete the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister. This film co-stars Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson and James Belushi.

Although there are some other options, if you’re looking for a chick flick then check out Alexis Bledel stuck in a love triangle in The Good Guy. And if you are in the mood for a feel good family movie, then go see Demi Moore in Happy Tears. Any film you choose, you will get two hours of good entertainment.

After his long awaited Oscar win 3 years ago, Martin Scorsese is back behind the camera in his fourth collaboration with his muse Leonardo DiCaprio with Shutter Island. The film was moved back from its original October 2009 release date, due to various marketing strategies and Leo not being able to do any press tours as he was filming Christopher Nolan’s new film Inception. Is this latest collaboration between the two going to match up to Gangs Of New York, The Aviator and the Oscar-Winning The Departed?

The Plot:

Shutter Island is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

The Good:

Leonardo DiCaprio: Leo always produces his best performances when work with Martin Scorsese, and this film in no exception. This might even be his best performance to date. His character, Teddy Daniels is very complex character, he has just lost his wife and he plagued by nightmares from WW2. Mr. DiCaprio gives absolutely everything and it pays off, he is wounded, he is fighting against everything, suffering from horrific nightmares but its his character’s utter conviction in finding out the truth is absolutely terrifying.
Martin Scorsese’s direction: It is such a joy watching a master at work. After the first 5 minutes of Scorsese embracing his Hitchcockian side, complete with a moody tone and a masterful score, we are unnerved and he keeps us enthralled until the credits role. The artistry in creating these flashback scenes are truly remarkable, showing that the master has clearly not lost his touch. The way that he orchestrates each character in the film is brilliant, no one is quite who they seam. This is certainly the closest thing that we are ever going to get to a Scorsese horror movie (along with his remake if Cape Fear), the horror is embedded the psychosis of each character and it is absolutely thrilling to watch.
Supporting Cast: The supporting cast do have a great hand in racking up the tension during the course of the film. Emile Mortimer is effective as the prison escapee, Michelle Williams is haunting as Daniels’s wife, and the very reliable Max Von Sydow is stallar as a the suspicious German doctor. But the best performance from the cast Sir Ben Kingsley, in which our assumption of the character changes multiple times during the course of the film. Although his story could have been drawn into cliche territory, Kingsley brings much need humanity to the character, which in turn makes his decisions creditable as the head doctor of the mental hospital.
Involving Jigsaw Puzzle/Murder Mystery: This is a very complex murder mystery, with twists and turns and it is riveting to watch on screen. There are so many layers to the film that it is impossible to catch on first viewing. There are moments in the film where you think it is going one way, but it does a complete 360-degree turn, and you are completely baffled. This is certainly an ambiguous film, which you can take whatever mean you want out of it, in turn makes it a fantastic viewing pleasure, without giving any easy solutions.
Marketing Campaign: Just a quick mention to the marketing people at Paramount, to say good job. They really have kept things under wraps, including the content for the trailer by just laying down the basics of the plot. By doing this, the film’s overall impact is even more effective.

The Bad:

Climax: This really is the only downside to the film, but the build up to the film is a lot better than the climax. You get a clear sense of Déjà vu at the end of the film. I keep think back to it, knowing that it was the only way that they could have ended the film, and there is certainly some emotional impact in knowing what happens to them. But there is a certain air of preposterous about the end, that slight distracted and annoying me about the film.

Overall:

With the climax providing the only disappointment of the film. There is no slowing down with Team DiCaprio/Scorsese by creating one of the most intriguing and engrossing films of the year.

Rating: 8/10

Interview: Martin Scorsese The Modest Icon Talks Shutter Island

“I do the best I can with every movie I make”, was the answer given by Mr Scorsese after being called the “Greatest Living Director” at the Shutter Island Press Conference in London — pretty modest I would say. Martin Scorsese is and always will be the one of the greatest directors to ever hit the film industry. With his career spanning nearly 50 years, he has made some of the most beloved cinematic masterpieces ever created, this includes Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, finally winning his overdue Best Director Academy Award in 2007 with The Departed, and now he takes on the psychological thriller, Shutter Island.

Some people questioned the film due to the move of it’s release date. Often people say that his best is in his past but they are wrong. Scorsese’s new film, shows that he is still a force to be reckoned with, and there are no signs of conventionality or flabbiness to be seen anywhere in this film. He chose this material because it was…

…the vocabulary of cinemas past and the nature of Gothic literature that opened the door. It was enticing, I didn’t know how to tell the story without utilizing that vocabulary.

The references are noticeable, the site of Gothic mansions, abandoned churches and graveyards, foreboding trees and forests, deep dark caves and cliffs, the twists and turns of a very complex thriller, the use of brooding music to emphasize the overall tone of the film and dealing with psychological fears of the leading character.

The mood and tone of the picture and the atmosphere was in my head, it’s in my blood in a way. Once I decided to make the film, I have to find my way into that mood to choose, select, emphasize moments and sound and ultimately thats when I call in my collaborators.

This is one of the very few films that Scorsese has very used an original score, as most of his scores consist of Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” or music from a particular period. Scorsese brought in composer Robbie Robertson to help create the moody score, which most consists of modern symphonic music he still did it in his own way. The score for this film “turned into an experiment and [Robertson] would send me Cd’s of different sounds” and then Scorsese was able to sync in the music to the film.

As much as I admired film scores, you know how much I have collected each film score, Bernard Herrmann who I was lucky to work with, I was extremely lucky to work with Elmer Bernstein and Howard Shore. But I always imagined films with my own score because I didn’t come from that world or period of film making.

Much like Jimmy Stewart in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Leonardo DiCaprio’s takes on the role of a tortured detective who will do anything to solve a murder. There are many echoes back to Hitchcock’s classic, both films show their leading character’s battling their own demons and haunted past, in order to solve a mystery. Both films embrace the psychological horror and violence, which makes his characters so compelling to watch. Vertigo has a special place in the director’s heart, as “it’s a film that I am obsessed with, it was a film I didn’t understand when I was 15, but it was one I kept revisiting“. He even has his own 35mm technicolor print of the film, which he screens regularly and is involved in its restoration.

Stewart’s performance in that film is an ultimate performance, as he realizes in the last 15 minutes of the picture, that gesture of his, as he loses her for the second time. You know, it is just an extraordinary thing.

Any cinephiles, film geek or critic will tell you when you’re watching a Martin Scorsese film, his films are always filmed with various references from the Golden Age of Hollywood. There are a number of influences on this film, Shock Corridor, Crossfire, Laura, I Walked With A Zombie, Out Of The Past, Let There Be Light and The Battle. but Scorsese never lets his influences take over the film.

Sam Fuller’s Shock Corridor can only be conjured as a mantra because Shock Corridor is a classic work of art. It comes for the unique experience of Sam Fuller. There is always an element of Shock Corridor hovering over the picture, but never specifically because it’s in me, so it’s a part of me.

Shutter Island is a film that is so full of life, it’s truly like watching masters at work. The use of the steadicam, tracking shots, close-ups etc are used to full effect, to enhance the overall visual impact of the film. His boyish enthusiasm directing this film is so infectious and we are swept along for a very complex ride, giving no easy solutions, and introducing complex characters that do not give way to general conventions. He is the gatekeeper to mature and intelligent film making.

If you have not seen any of Martin Scorsese’s films, then shame on you. But if you want to start, Shutter Island, is a great introduction to the immense Scorsese back catalogue and will show you want it takes to make a film great.

Interview: Leonardo DiCaprio for Shutter Island

There are celebrities and then there are movie stars — actors that take you back to the days when names like Carey Grant and Ingrid Bergman ran Hollywood leaving no room for the “little guy.” A time before all the paparazzi killed the mystery and turned Hollywood into a reality channel. Certain actors harkens back memories of the movie star, Leonardo DiCaprio is lucky enough to still carry some of that old Hollywood charm and did so at the Shutter Island press conference with Martin Scorsese in London.

He started as, “Leo” a teen heartthrob with dreamy blue eyes but with a number of accomplished dramatic roles over the past decade alongside some of the best directors of the past millennium, he has well established himself more as “Leonardo DiCaprio,” a true actor that takes us back to the good ol’ days and can sell a ticket reading a phonebook.

Despite the tabloids exploiting the few pictures of Leo drinking a Latte, we have a pieces from the press conference with DiCaprio where he talks about his true passion, acting. He walks about taking on the most difficult role of his life, why he’s attracted to such dark roles and what drives him…

You put yourself through hell in this film, it took you obviously into some very dark places, what drives you to work on such dark and dramatic roles?

DiCaprio: Self-imposed suffering (laughs). It was the nature of the material. At first glace, when I first read the book and the script, it was obviously a very complex jigsaw puzzle, and the line in which reality starts and dreams begin in Teddy’s past is blurred. But throughout the movie, you start to learn about different facets of Teddy Daniels’s mind on Shutter Island and it’s a truth about his past, dramatic truth. It’s a very ultra complex character study. In order to tell the story, we had to push the emotional story-lines, to have one set of circumstances what we believed and what we needed to push to the emotional extremes. I think that both of us (Martin Scorsese and I) kept Teddy going into dark and dark places in the film and I think it was surprising for the both of us, because only reading a screenplay there is only so much you can do. When you need to extract what is written on the page to being there and having to do these sequences in this movie and it really shocked us I think.

As it has been said it is a very demanding role you’ve tackled, and you’re also tackling Virgina Wolf at the moment. How do you keep your sanity while doing all of these intense characters?

DiCaprio: Well by sheer necessity to survive the film-making process you have to switch off when you go home. I do say that with all sincerity because it was a very demanding role. Look, ultimately I am challenged by these types of characters that challenge me and this is maybe the most challenging one to date. Physically yes, emotionally more so. But it gives me great excitement you know this character, as Marty mentioned earlier, it is very difficult one to talk about as with the narrative in detail, for people to have that virgin experience.

So we are very conscience, Marty, Sir Ben and myself, on a film that has a different interpretation, with different meanings and a certain ambiguity at the ending of this film and through out the entire movie that could give the audience a different experiences on further viewings. So that also challenges me as an actor in the way I portray Teddy, there will often times were we will, “how do I say this, pushing him into different extremes .” So yes, it was the most challenging [film I've done] and I relished those experiences.

We are used to seeing you in very complex characters, are we likely to see up lighten up in a comedy or a romance?

DiCaprio: You mean lighten up in general (laughs). I don’t know really, I just respond to what I read. But what I read in these roles are characters that have moved me emotionally in some respect and it is very much a throwback to what moved me in the cinema at a very early age. These are the types of characters that I felt emotionally connected. And I think that you really feel that you arrived there or done that role that satisfies that. I am driven to be able to someday in my mind or try to get close to the great performers that I have seen in cinema from the years past. I don’t know whether that hunger or thirst will ever been quenched. I would like to try other genres and I look forward to it, but it just depends on what moves me emotionally.

What was it like working with such long time actor and icon Max Von Sydow?

DiCaprio: It was incredible working with Max. The sequence where I interrogate him and he interrogates me, it depends which way you work at it. It was only the back of his head you had to see and his voice bellowing through that armchair, just felt a chill going down your spine. He just got such a comfort level in the way that he performs that can only come from years of unbelieveable work. And has such a belielf in what he does, it was chilling to work with him. He is apart of cinema’s history, he should revired as that and respected as that. He’s a genius.

In the dark tone of making the film, did your own personality change? Did you ever worry about going too far?

DiCaprio: For one reason or another I have to say particually for this film, there was a somber mood, going home everyday, there were quite emotionally extremes and it is the nature of the character going through those emotional trauma, his history. And it is hard for those types of thins to rub off, but for the most part, I do like to lock myself away from most people during filming at the time. And so I wouldn’t necessarily get much of a reaction, as I was mostly alone.

There were moments of moments towards the end of filming that we had sequences where there was a certain lapse, understanding were I was because we kept pushing this guy further and further during the day we were acting out a traumatic scene, that was either a dream or reality for this guy. I remember saying to Marty “where am I? What am I doing right now? Whats going on right now?” [He would say] “Just don’t worry, we will do the scene again, take it one more time, and keep pushing it.” And you know it is great to have a guide or a mentor, somebody that you do trust in situations like that, because you are make yourself vulunerable and you need to have somebody there that will ultimately guide you as an actor and your character and to not push you to extremes that might be overly sentimental, might be too schmaltzy as we say. So through the years we worked together, that trust level was there and I am glad to do this character and this film quite specifically with Marty as the filmmaker.

Shutter Island Super Bowl TV Spot

This weekend, the biggest television event of the year will take place, and that means plenty of commercials will be fighting for your attention. As usual several major films have managed to grab a spot during this year’s Super Bowl telecast and Martin Scorsese‘s Shutter Island is one of them. Lucky for us we don’t have to wait until the big game to see what it’s all about, we have the latest trailer right here…

Shutter Island is a period piece that takes place in 1954 during the peak of the Cold War era, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo as U.S. marshals sent to an exclusive mental hospital to investigate a woman’s disappearance. Once they arrive, they’re treated more like patients than members of the government, and slowly but surely they discover the inmates on the island might not be so crazy after all.

The latest promo is a lot more graphic than what we’ve seen in the previous trailers. This one concentrates more on showing all the craziness that’s going on within the institution. There’s even a shot of someone’s slit wrist on a table bleeding out, and I always thought the Super Bowl folks were concerned about graphic visuals during its broadcast (sarcasm)?

A boatload of high quality photos have been released in promotion of Martin Scorsese‘s latest film, Shutter Island. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, and is scheduled to hit theaters on February 19th. Paramount Pictures have released several images from the film that feature both its stars and director in front of and behind the camera. Take a look…

The film stars DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo as U.S. marshals sent to an exclusive mental hospital to investigate a woman’s disappearance. Once they arrive, they’re treated more like patients than members of the government, and slowly but surely they discover the inmates on the island might not be so crazy after all. If that’s not the set up for some creepy stuff to go down, I don’t know what is.

Shutter Island is a period piece that takes place in 1954 during the peak of the Cold War era. This is a time when paranoia was high, and anyone could be confined or criticized for any awkward behavior. You just didn’t know who to trust, and that’s the main theme of this film. The marshals go in thinking that they’re visiting a legitimate psych institution but discover all these horrific secrets that are brewing beneath the surface.

Iron Man 2, Shutter Island Get Superbowl XLIV Spots!

The most watched television event of the year is the Superbowl, and just as many people tune in for the commercials as the actual game. This year the ad revenue for the program will be through the roof as some major companies have bought some ad time including a few film studios. We’ve discovered several high profile movies that will run trailers during the annual football game, thanks to the folks over at Advertising Age.

Universal Pictures, Paramount, and Walt Disney have all thrown their hats in the ring for some Superbowl spots. A few of the films that will pop up during the broadcast include Iron Man 2, Shutter Island, and M. Night. Shyamalan‘s latest, The Last Airbender. Those are all Paramount films, so the gaps for Disney and Universal are anyone’s guess.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the House of Mouse threw in a spot for Alice in Wonderland, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, or even Tron Legacy. Universal isn’t so cut and dry since they don’t have an abundance of tentpole projects in their arsenal, but we’ll see. Iron Man 2 will hit theaters on May 7th, Shutter Island drops on February 19th, and The Last Airbender debuts on July 2nd. The Superbowl itself will air on CBS on February 7th.

How many new trailers can premiere in one day? Let’s find out! Last night on Spike TV they debut a new trailer for Martin Scorsese‘s Shutter Island. Oddly enough it’s a shorter take on the previous trailer we’ve seen. Either way, it does manage to sneak in a few flashes of never before seen footage, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and his crazy eyes.

I told you it was filled with DiCaprio’s crazy eyes and gun toting paranoia. In the film, two U.S. marshals are sent to an exclusive mental hospital to investigate a woman’s disappearance. Once they arrive, they’re treated more like patients than members of the government, and slowly but surely they discover the inmates on the island might not be so crazy after all.

The film was originally scheduled to drop this month, but got pushed back to February 19, 2010. I can’t wait that long!
