New DVD Releases: Inception, Shrek Forever After, 30 for 30

There’s not a whole lot of variety on DVD this week, but what is there is really big. Like $200 Million-plus big. Yes, two of the biggest movies of the summer hit shelves this week, and they couldn’t be more different. We have the mind-bending action film Inception for sci-fi fans and film geeks and Shrek Forever After for their kids. Or maybe you just love both!

There’s also some great documentaries leaping from TV to DVD and the worst DVD release of the week!

Feature Films

Inception

Before I begin: SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT – I’ll be mentioning the end of the movie! SPOILER ALERT.

There, now that the two of you who would go to a movie news website and haven’t seen Inception are out of the way, let’s discuss that ending. That spinning top, those kids who finally turn around. Leo standing in his old house. Was it a dream? Was it real? It was the debate of cinephiles and pseudo-intellectuals alike in the latter half of the summer, but I have my own answer.

I don’t care.

In fact, as soon as it the top started spinning, I immediately thought to myself, “Oh brother, they’re going to ruin this movie with some ambiguous ‘ending’ that doesn’t relate to the rest of the film in any way whatsoever.” ( I also apparently morphed into Charlie Brown temporarily.)

I thought this because I never found Inception to be a pretty straightforward action/heist pic that reached a new strata due to an incredibly innovative premise. A premise that didn’t serve as anything more than a hook and a way to heighten the action – not a psychological analysis of its lead, not a meditation on the filmmaking process, and not deep in any way. Just a damn fine action film that was a lot of fun too watch.

And that’s something that wouldn’t change whether or not DiCaprio was still dreaming.

But if you’re still confused, you can buy Inception on DVD.

Shrek Forever After

Awash in the many disappointing sequels, the TV specials, and the overall omnipresence of its main character, it’s easy to forget that once upon a time Shrek was an absolute miracle revolution of a movie.

Yes, you can say that some early Pixar releases and other films of their ilk went for the adult-as-kid’s-movie path for laughs, but it took Shrek to become so wildly subversive, so absolutely unconcerned with how it appealed to children. A monumental achievement, but a mixed blessing in my opinion.

Why mixed? Because of this scene I witnessed during a screening of Shrek 2:

It was the scene with the “Cops” parody “Knights”. Specifically, the moment where a Knight pulls a bag of catnip away from Puss. The audience exploded in laughter – the type of laughter that causes people who aren’t even paying attention to laugh as well, as though not to look moronic.

There was, however, one person who wasn’t laughing. Not at all. A little six-year-old boy sitting in front of me who said to his dad, “Daddy, why is that funny?”

And this is where the mixed blessing comes in. This father was taking his child to an innocuous PG-rated film and was now left to explain to him what drugs were if he didn’t want to lie to him. While this joke was certainly sly enough that censors shouldn’t have booted it, it still shows that maybe these films shouldn’t push the envelope too far lest they corrupt their target audience.

I’m not sure if there’s anything like that in Shrek Forever After, so buy the DVD to find out.

ESPN Films “30 for 30″ Gift Set Collection, Volume 1

In case you’ve missed it (or maybe just don’t believe it) ESPN has spent the last year or so delivering some of the most interesting documentaries anywhere. Not just about sports, not just on television, anywhere.

Now, you can get the first fifteen of their “30 for 30″ series in one boxed set. While the quality is a bit of a mixed bag, each is very compelling, detailing sports stories that don’t often get much coverage or discussion.

Weekend Box Office: Shrek 4 Reigns For a Third Week!

Four new movies out this weekend and no new box office champion. Shrek Forever After isn’t going down without a fight! When the fourth installment in the series opened at number one, no one really noticed because it only made a reasonable amount of money and the studios were hope for more from the $165 million grand finale.

What is impressive about the film is how long it’s stayed at number one and how it’s been beating down blockbuster after blockbuster with huge names in them. Take that Bruckheimer and you Prince of Wherever! And you Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott coming together again, back off! And don’t think I’ve forgotten the Sex and the City gang who LEFT the city (how does that work)! And lets not even talk about Marmaduke!

Shrek Glass Recall From McDonald’s

Shrek Forever After may be bad for your health thanks to the latest marketing campaign the film has with McDonald’s. According to several sources the fast food chain has recalled 12 million Shrek themed collector’s glasses because the paint used on the outside design may contain a toxic chemical!

According to the Associated Press, the toxic chemical cadmium has been discovered on several Shrek glasses causing the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to enforce a recall. They ask that consumers stop using the glasses immediately and McDonald’s themselves will post info on their website regarding refunds.

“The 16-ounce glasses, being sold for about $2 each as part of a promotional campaign for the movie Shrek Forever After, were available in four designs depicting the characters Shrek, Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and Donkey.”

Exposure to cadmium can cause long term health problems like bone softening and kidney damage. For the love of God, if you have a glass get rid of it ASAP! The words “bone softening” scares the crap out of me. Even though McDonald’s is fully cooperating with the Safety Commission, they released a statement that somehow claims the glasses might not be as dangerous as they sound.

“We believe the Shrek glassware is safe for consumer use,” Whitman said. “However, again to ensure that our customers receive safe products from us, we made the decision to stop selling them and voluntarily recall these products effective immediately.”

It seems like they’re trying to save face, while keeping their image clean. Too bad it’s not working.

Once again if you have Shrek glass GET RID OF IT!

Weekend Box Office: Fourth Shrek Film’s a Charm

Apparently the only thing that can beat out a sequel is a quad-rel! The fourth and final installment in the Shrek series has made a resurgence in popularity with it’s viewers and a ton of money. Sadly, Iron Man 2 in its third week has lost its lead by a long shot. Although! It has made $250 million domestically and $506 million worldwide so there’s not really much to complain about. In fact, I think about the same amount of people have seen the second film as the first, this time they all just saw it a lot faster.

As for the rest of the new-comers, despite the surprising positive reaction to MacGruber it still didn’t have a great opening. Then again, the positive word-of-mouth may be what keeps it around for a while. We’ll have to wait and see! And Kites, one of the most original films I’ve heard of in a long time, an American, Mexican Bollywood has made it on to the list. Hopefully with it’s mass appeal it can stick around.

Big success and major bomb of the week:

Bomb: Robin Hood - It cost $200 million to make and in only it’s second week has dropped to #3 (after never seeing the #1 spot) and has only grossed $66 million Domestically – OUCH. This is somewhat reminiscent of The Wolfman for Universal
Success: How to Train Your Dragon has now stayed in the Top 10 for nine whole weeks! If that doesn’t attest to its likability I don’t know what does.

Shrek 4: Movie Review

Another Shrek, another chance to see your favorite animated characters and another chance to be reminded of the genius that was the first film, without this being the first film. The problem with this entire series is that it started with a bang, fell to a whimper, and with it’s grand finale is simply enough to make up for how much it’s lost without really ever wow-ing us. Shrek Forever After is a good movie, they were creative in finding a way to make the characters fresh again, and there were definitely enough laughs in it to leave me satisfied, BUT it wasn’t without a few problems. But lets starts at the top…

The Synopsis:

As Shrek settles into his perfect life, he begins to get bored and wishes he could have just one day to himself. He makes a pact with deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin to get back to feeling like a real ogre again, but of course he forgets to read the fine print and is damned to a twisted version of Far Far Away — where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona have never met — he sets out to restore his world and get a kiss from his true love in order to set everything right again — oh what a kiss can do in Far Far Away!

The Good:

Bit of a Comeback: This is definitely no where near as good as the first film, but it’s definitely a revival from the third and on a slight improvement from the second.
Donkey: Whichever main characters you liked in the first film, you’ll like in this film, mainly because they went back to the beginning, came up with a way to make it fresh and then capitalized on what you loved. For me The Donkey is still the saving grace and the minor characters are really where the belly laughs come in.
Kids/Adult Film: This is definitely a good kids/adult film, meaning that there were definitely a lot of opportunities for both parties to enjoy the film. I would bring my little brother, despite the little girl next to me who pointed to the screen and said “I don’t like that movie.”
Music: The music and the throw backs to famous songs is so important for this film and as always the music was well placed and well used to really make those laughs hit home.
Solid Ending: It’s as predictable and cheesy as it comes, but a nice twist on the original story and if there was ever a moment to go a little over the top, this was it.
Fun Cameos: As always, it’s the smaller characters that pop up in each film that make this series so fun. There were a lot of good cameos but…

The Bad:

Not Enough in the Cameos: There were lots of different characters and cameos, but they were never fully utilized. Craig Robinson has about 3 lines, 3 good lines, but that’s all. Same goes for John Hamm and Jane Lynch. They were solid and fun, but just not as potent as say the gingerbread man in the first film.
No Surprises: Overall, the film is very predictable. Which might have worked for the ending, but you need some suspense in the middle to keep you going. The thing that the first film had going for it was that it was an original idea, with brand new animation and a something different for us to be blown away by. This film tried to revive itself by creating a new world and did so in part, but it was very predictable and may have been an improvement for the Shrek series, but doesn’t really compare to some of the other animations out there today.
3D: For me, the 3-D in this film felt like a gimmick. It was fun and well added but not needed. It felt like they were trying to make a little extra money on their last hoora!

Rating: 7.5/10

Shrek Forever After made it’s premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival on April 21st and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 21st.

Overall:

It’s no work of genius but the last 30 minutes have the best jokes which will definitely leave you walking out of the theater smiling and it’s worth seeing.

Pick of the Week: The Blind Side

The film that finally got Sandra Bullock her Oscar and all the horrible media attention that folllowed. The Blind Side director, John Lee Hancock tells the story of a homeless boy, Michael Oher, who is a great football player. With the help of a loving family he ends up a first round NFL draft pick. Quintin Aaron stars as Michael. It’s nice to see Bullock get the recognition that she deserves.

Funny, sexual, and full of good looking people. Forgetting Sarah Marshall, directed by Nicholas Stoller, is not the best movie in the world when it comes to plot but it sure is entertaining. The romantic comedy stars funnyman Jason Segel, Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis.

Final Shrek Forever After Trailer

Get ready for the last time you’ll be seeing Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and a fat version of Puss in Boots on the big screen! The film is being marketed as the “final chapter” in the series. As much as I hate trilogies and this trailer by no means blows me away, I love all of the Shrek films and hate to think that they will stop and yet Twilight will continue. They take their time with these film. There’s always a lot of great writing, perfectly cast voices, and fun rides to go on.

The film once again stars your favorite leads with voices by Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas, John Cleese, Julie Andrews and new additions Jon Hamm, Craig Robinson (the chimichanga stand owner featured in the trailer and in the photo above), Walt Dohrn, Jane Lynch and many more. The film is directed by Mike Mitchell, a newcomer to the series, who hopefully knows how to handle an ogre war!

Four New Shrek Forever After Posters

After nearly a decade since Shrek won over our hearts with his unapologetic disgusting behavior, the final chapter is almost here. And due to the business of film, this means more advertising — but don’t worry it’s not bad at all. We have four new posters featuring most of the Shrek Forever After cast.

My favorite, hands down, is the ginger-bread man poster. He is so adorable. He’s up in mid-air slaying animal cookies dressed in tribal attire with a face that says, “Don’t mess with me!” Puss flaunts his big belly (with no shame), Fiona leads an army, and donkey, well he’s just ‘donkey.’ Each poster has a slogan which makes them the very more hilarious and entertaining. Puss’ reads “Feed Me! If you dare!” Which, if you’ve seen the teaser poster and trailer, you have to find hilarious.

The last chapter is about a tired Shrek who makes a deal with the Devil (Rumpelstiltskin). He wants the chance to experience his life as a single, wild ogre again. But of course, things go awry and everything changes for the worse.

Shrek Forever After hits theaters May 21, 2010.

Two New Shrek Forever After Posters

Two new posters have been released for the final installment of the Shrek franchise, Shrek Forever After. The film features regulars Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, and Eddie Murphy, with the addition of Jon Hamm, Kathy Griffin, Larry King, Regis Philbin, and Jane Lynch. One poster shows our favorite green ogre in a compromising position, while the other has Rumpelstiltskin surrounded by bitches, well sort of. See for yourself…

Normally, posters for films like this don’t get a rise out of me, but these have really struck a chord. Does the fact that the marketing team use taglines that rhyme with swear words seem a little wrong to you? This is a kids movie, and even though Shrek is known for treading the fine line of innuendo these posters may have gone too far.

“Where my Witches At?” is the one that really gets under my skin. I am by no means a prude, in fact I swear like a sailor, but I don’t think this is the right message to send to children. When you read that your mind automatically thinks of the word ‘Bitches.’ It’s in our corrupt DNA. This isn’t a cry for DreamWorks to scrap the posters and start anew but instead a side note asking them to remember who their demographic is.

Over at Yahoo, they’ve debuted the new theatrical trailer for DreamWorks’ Shrek Forever After. It’s the fourth and final installment in the long running animated series that will bring some closure to the ogre, Donkey, Fiona, and of course, Puss in Boots. The film is directed by Mike Mitchell and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 21st. Check it out…

Shrek Forever After is slated to premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival on April 21st, and it will once again feature the voice talents of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas. We’re also hearing that the following trailer will debut in theaters in front of the animated feature, How to Train Your Dragon when it’s released on March 26th. The film is being marketed as the “final chapter” in the series, and is said to bring all the characters “full circle.”

In the latest installment, Shrek has grown tired of his domesticated lifestyle and makes a deal with the Devil or in this case, Rumpelstiltskin. He wants the chance to experience his life as a single, wild ogre again and he gets his wish but pays a heavy price. Everything’s changed for the worse and none of his friends or even his darling Fiona remember who he is.

Shrek Forever After Opening At Tribeca Film Festival

This year we’ll see another sequel in DreamWorks’ highly successful Shrek franchise entitled, Shrek Forever After. The studio is gearing up for the release of the fourth film in the series, which has been a steady cash-cow at the box office. This time around, it will make its debut in a big way when it opens at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Shrek Forever After’s premiere is slated for April 21st, and it will once again feature the voice talents of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas. The film is being marketed as the “final chapter” in the series, and is said to bring all the characters “full circle.” Like most tentpole films these days, it will be released in 3D but it won’t be available for general audiences until May 21st.

The Tribeca Film Festival runs through May 2nd and the feature film slate will be announced on March 10 and 15. DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg had plenty of positive things to say about the studio’s joint venture with Tribeca.

“DreamWorks Animation is honored to bring the world premiere of Shrek Forever After to New York City for the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival. It is a great privilege and tribute to our entire cast and crew to have been chosen as this year’s opening night selection.”

I’m happy to hear that the film is going out with a bang but hopefully this is the final chapter like they said. After part 2 it lost some of its luster and became a bit diluted. Are you still interested in Shrek’s story?

Shrek Forever After Poster and Teaser Trailer

It’s truly the season of giving because all the movie studios are releasing trailers and posters for next year’s biggest films. First Iron Man 2, then Clash of the Titans, and now we have the newest Shrek sequel, Shrek Forever After. It’s the fourth and final film in the DreamWorks animated franchise, which will debut during the 2010 summer block buster season.

The first poster for Shrek Forever After shows that the main characters have gone through some serious changes since the last time we saw them. The most drastic change comes from the once svelte Puss in Boots. What happened to him? All the usual suspects have returned to lend their vocal talents such as, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderes. The tagline on the one sheet states that this will be “The Final Chapter,” but we’ll see if that sticks after the movie debuts and makes a boatload of money.

As for the trailer, it’s barely over a minute long and shows Shrek stuck in the middle of an alternate universe. This explains Puss in Boots weight gain, and Fiona’s “Xena the Warrior Princess” poster look. The film will be available in 3-D and will debut in conventional and IMAX theaters on May 21, 2010.
