The live action adaptation of the DC Comics property Shazam! has been on and off the movie radar for the past year, with no steady sign of life. Over at CineFools, they’ve discovered some interesting news from the film’s co-writer Bill Birch and he discussed the casting for the superhero, which may or may not include Dwayne Johnson or Ryan Reynolds.

At the moment, Peter Segal is attached to direct Shazam from a screenplay by Birch and Geoff Johns. The comic centered on a teenage boy by the name of Billy Batson, who becomes a superhero named Captain Marvel when he shouts the magic word, “Shazam.” The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

When Birch spoke about the movie he stated that he and Geoff are in the process of writing the script and are trying to balance the character’s story while modernizing it for today’s audience.

He went on to say that the story won’t be as dark as The Dark Knight, but will be PG-13. He also addressed the rumors that Dwayne Johnson was in the running to play the lead character or Black Adam.

As far as him being committed? I’m sure it’ll all depend on the script. That being the case I don’t write with anyone in mind. If the characters are solid it will attract good talent and then there will always be a rewrite to address the talent’s concerns. Usually at that point in the process is when you start writing for that specific actor. More than likely the role of Billy Batson will be an unknown but the role of Cpt Marvel? I always thought Ryan Reynolds would have been interesting but now that he’s Green Lantern that’s not an option.

When did Ryan Reynolds become the poster child for all comic based movies? He’s really riding on thin ice with this whole Deadpool/Green Lantern thing, and now Birch is throwing around Shazam speculation? Thanks, but no thanks.

Who do you think should play the lead in Shazam?

Will the Shazam aka Captain Marvel talk ever end? The live action adaptation of DC Comic’s Shazam movie has been in development for a very, very long time. It has hit a couple of snags in the past year, but it manages to keep coming back for more. Back in January, Superherohype reported that the film wasn’t happening. Fast forward seven months later, and not only is it back on, but with a new writer. Find out more below.

According to THR, Warner Bros has hired a writer to adapt the script for the feature film based on the popular comic book character. Actor-turned-writer Billy Birch has been brought on to bring the story to life. He’ll be helped by Geoff Johns, one of the three DC Comics heavyweights hired by the studio to act as consultants on DC projects.

The comic is centered on a teenage boy by the name of Billy Batson, who becomes a superhero named Captain Marvel when he shouts the magic word, “Shazam.” “The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.”

The trade is reporting that Peter Segal is still attached to direct the film, with Michael Ewing producing. How are we going to make this work? Who wants to see Captain Marvel on the big screen? I believe his character was created to capitalize off of the popularity of Superman back in the day. The last film we had that centered on the Man of Steel didn’t fare too well, so maybe they should let this go.

Do you think they should continue developing a film based on Captain Marvel?

There has been a complete 360 degree turn around regarding the Warner Brother’s DC comic adaptation of Shazam! As I reported earlier Get Smart director, Peter Segal was attach to helm the film, based on a script by John August. Also, Get Smart co-star Dwayne Johnson had the role of the film’s bad guy Black Adam locked up. However, according to Superherohype, this project is, for lack of a better term “dunzo.”

When taking to his official blog, screenwriter John August had this to say about a Captain Marvel movie…

By the time I got back, the project was dead. By “dead,” I mean that it won’t be happening. I don’t think it’s on the studio’s radar at all. It may come back in another incarnation, with another writer, but I can say with considerable certainty that it won’t be the version I developed.

Maybe Warner Bros. is putting all their energy into trying to get the Watchmen out on time?
